Cooksey, Sybil Newton. "Revenant Motion." liquid blackness 6, no. 2 (2022): 88–117. http://dx.doi.org/10.1215/26923874-9930303.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Through sensitive engagement with the experimental films of Arthur Jafa, the flex choreography of Storyboard P, and performance of #BlackLivesMatter protests, this essay submits revenant motion as a concept through which to think about black being and phenomenology in this era. The entwined reflections on black life, death, and aesthetics offered up by Jafa, Claudia Rankine, Hortense Spillers, Elizabeth Alexander, and Sylvia Wynter shape these speculations toward a black creative, curatorial, and cultural practice attentive to the other(wise) worlds opened by uncanny reanimation. The suggestion here is that revenant motion might name a genre (à la Wynter) of the perennial danse macabre, which often figures Death dancing among the living as a reminder to too-worldly humans of its ever-presence and equalizing power. The creative and critical practices considered here also persistently foreground the melancholy possibilities and pleasures that our collective entanglements with black after/other/lives affords. This study of the macabre aesthetic as it manifests in latter-day memento mori sharpens our awareness of the proximity of horror and romance. In doing so it provides us with an occasion to think about how the gothic character of black life emerges in the sensual and sensorial performance of mourning and artful response to grief.

Abstract:
Cyril of Alexandria did not treat the problem of God’s transcendence and immanence as extensively and profoundly as did John Chrysostom, due to the fact that the question was not as relevant in Cyril’s time as is was in the time of Chrysostom. However, the ideas of the latter are present in the writings of Cyril, who draws a distinction between the inner being of God and His work. This similarity can be traced in two main points. First, God in His essential nature surpasses everything. This inner life of God is above and beyond any knowledge and reach, any concept and reasoning. All that we know about the nature of God is that He acts in the world and this action is performed by the Father through the Son in the Spirit. Second, in order to outline God’s action, Cyril uses the terms „power” and „energy” indistinguishably. For both authors the method of antinomy is a primary system of coordinates in which they combine the two fundamentally opposite poles of God’s being: the transcendent and the immanent. So, in this point the Oriental Theological Schools of Alexandria and Antioch are internally consonant.

Abstract:
The aims of this study were to investigate hearing aid satisfaction for a group of older Australians fitted with government-funded hearing aids using the Satisfaction with Amplification in Daily Life (SADL) questionnaire; to compare the Australian data gathered with the provisional normative data reported by Cox and Alexander (1999); and to investigate the relationship between SADL satisfaction and several participant variables, hearing aid variables, and other outcome measures. The SADL questionnaire and a Client Satisfaction Survey (CSS) were distributed by mail to 1284 adults fitted with government-funded hearing aids three to six months previously. 1014 surveys were returned. The mean age of participants was 75.32 years; 54.4% of participants were male, and 54.8% were fitted binaurally. Participants were fitted primarily with digitally programmable hearing aids of various styles (22.5% BTEs, 34.8% ITEs, 41.8% ITCs, 0.9% nonstandard [NS] devices).Overall, participants reported a considerable level of satisfaction with their devices. SADL Global and subscale scores were significantly higher for the Australian sample than the U.S. norms described by Cox and Alexander (1999).

Abstract:
Terrorism is first and foremost viewed as a matter of security policy; however, its emergence, perception, effects, prevention and mitigation actually involve a multitude of societal sectors as well as academic fields, which also means that numerous academics, practitioners and decision-makers are in a position to contribute to analysing and countering terrorism. This handbook serves as the first German-language reference work on terrorism studies, capturing the complexity of this subject in its entirety. By using theories and perspectives from various academic disciplines, the handbook encourages scholars and students to apply their expertise to the field of terrorism studies and to emphasise interdisciplinary work. With contributions by Sebastian Baden, Stefanie Ballscheidt, Constanze Beierlein, Brahim Ben Slama, Christina Binder, Yannick Birlinger, Dana Bönisch, Raphael Bossong, Damaris Braun, Donald E. Abstract:
Abstract:
