Abstract:
Three philosophical questions guide this chapter: what is mind, what is language, and what is reference (or meaning)? Emphasis centres upon Origen’s episteme of ‘ultimate presuppositions’, first principles, philosophy of mind and language, theory of intentionality, aesthetics of scriptural exegesis, and prayer. His approach to self-knowledge and subjectivity is key to his claims concerning the limits of thought and language, the intentionality of mental acts, and distinctions made between ordinary and ideal languages. As a focusing mechanism, contemplative prayer is examined as an intentionally aesthetic episteme-noesis that gives a logos access to Logos. Here prayer maps ideal types of thought and speech that non-propositionally, discursively, and non-discursively allow for a noesis and praxis of the logikoi, epinoiai, and theoremata of the Logos-Christ. Such mapping denotes Origen’s epistemology of theology as a ‘sigetic-discursive’ model of negative theology.

Wilson, Robin. Number Theory: A Very Short Introduction. Oxford University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/actrade/9780198798095.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Number Theory: A Very Short Introduction explains the branch of mathematics primarily concerned with the counting numbers, 1, 2, 3, …. Long considered one of the most ‘beautiful’ areas of mathematics, number theory dates back over two millennia to the Ancient Greeks, but has seen some startling new developments in recent years. Trailblazers in the field include mathematicians Euclid of Alexandria, Pierre de Fermat, Leonhard Euler, and Carl Friedrich Gauss. Number theory has intrigued and attracted amateurs and professionals alike for thousands of years, appearing in both recreational contexts (puzzles) and practical concerns (cryptography). Some problems in number theory are easy, whereas others are notorious with no known solutions to date.

Abstract:
This article outlines a unified information processing framework whose goal is to explain how the nervous system represents space, time, and objects. It explains the concept of the emulation theory of representation and describes an extension of the emulation framework for temporal representation. It discusses Alexandre Pouget's basis function model of spatial representation and describes how to combine the basis function model of spatial representation with the trajectory emulation model of temporal representation to yield an information processing framework that genuinely represents behavioral spatiotemporal trajectories of behavioral objects.

Abraham, William J. Bearing with the Divine Wisdom of the Ages. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198786511.003.0003.

Full text
Abstract:
One significant divine action borne out in the pages of the New Testament is the divine inspiration of Scripture, attested most clearly in 2 Timothy 3:16. The author asks what set of divine actions best describe the production of Scripture, and investigates what the early Christians thought about the divine production of Scripture. The author then interrogates the work of Irenaeus of Lyons and Origen of Alexandria, and concludes that their concerns with Scripture were not with developing a theory of inspiration. Then the author argues that modern debates about the divine authorship of Scripture confuse the action of speaking and the action of inspiration, when the two realities are distinct. He thus concludes that the divine inspiration of Scripture should be distinguished from divine authorship.

Marks II, Robert J. Handbook of Fourier Analysis & Its Applications. Oxford University Press, 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780195335927.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Fourier analysis has many scientific applications - in physics, number theory, combinatorics, signal processing, probability theory, statistics, option pricing, cryptography, acoustics, oceanography, optics and diffraction, geometry, and other areas. In signal processing and related fields, Fourier analysis is typically thought of as decomposing a signal into its component frequencies and their amplitudes. This practical, applications-based professional handbook comprehensively covers the theory and applications of Fourier Analysis, spanning topics from engineering mathematics, signal processing and related multidimensional transform theory, and quantum physics to elementary deterministic finance and even the foundations of western music theory. As a definitive text on Fourier Analysis, Handbook of Fourier Analysis and Its Applications is meant to replace several less comprehensive volumes on the subject, such as Processing of Multifimensional Signals by Alexandre Smirnov, Modern Sampling Theory by John J. Benedetto and Paulo J.S.G. Ferreira, Vector Space Projections by Henry Stark and Yongyi Yang and Fourier Analysis and Imaging by Ronald N. Bracewell. In addition to being primarily used as a professional handbook, it includes sample problems and their solutions at the end of each section and thus serves as a textbook for advanced undergraduate students and beginning graduate students in courses such as: Multidimensional Signals and Systems, Signal Analysis, Introduction to Shannon Sampling and Interpolation Theory, Random Variables and Stochastic Processes, and Signals and Linear Systems.

Juhasz, Alexandra, and Theodore Kerr. We Are Having This Conversation Now. Duke University Press, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.1215/9781478023081.

Full text
Abstract:
We Are Having This Conversation Now offers a history, present, and future of AIDS through thirteen short conversations between Alexandra Juhasz and Theodore Kerr, scholars deeply embedded in HIV responses. They establish multiple timelines of the epidemic, offering six foundational periodizations of AIDS culture, tracing how attention to the crisis has waxed and waned from the 1980s to the present. They begin the book with a 1990 educational video produced by a Black health collective, using it to consider organizing intersectionally, theories of videotape, empowerment movements, and memorialization. This video is one of many powerful yet overlooked objects that the pair focus on through conversation to understand HIV across time. Along the way, they share their own artwork, activism, and stories of the epidemic. Their conversations illuminate the vital role personal experience, community, cultural production, and connection play in the creation of AIDS-related knowledge, archives, and social change. Throughout, Juhasz and Kerr invite readers to reflect and find ways to engage in their own AIDS-related culture and conversation.

Sheedy, Matt, ed. Identity, Politics and the Study of Islam: Current Dilemmas in the Study of Religions. Equinox Publishing, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1558/isbn.9781781797136.

Full text
Abstract:
Based partly on a series of posts coming out of the Bulletin for the Study of Religion blog, this volume includes greatly expanded essays by Ruth Mas, Sarah Imhoff and James Crossley as well as new pieces by Devin Stewart, Carlos Segovia, Alexandre Caeiro and Emmanuelle Stefanidis, Russell McCutcheon and Salman Sayyid. This volume, thus, brings together a variety of scholars both inside and outside of Islamic Studies in order to grapple with such questions as: what, if anything, is unique about Islamic Studies? How should Islamic studies as religious studies engage with postcolonial critique? What is the role of identity politics in such endeavors? What are the lines between descriptive (hermeneutic) work and theoretical explanations of Islamic texts? What can scholars in related areas, such as the study of Judaism and early Christianity, offer to this conversation by way of analogy? Can ethical, political, or theological concerns function critically to help theorize Islam? The volume is divided into four sections: Theory and Identity Politics in the Study of Islam, which looks at the role of identity, knowledge production, and political commitments among scholars of Islam; Critique and Identity in Qur’anic Studies, which deals with challenges in applying critical-historical methods to the study of the Qur’an and how these methods relate to some of the issues raised Omid Safi and Aaron Hughes; Comparative Views from Outside Islamic Studies, which provides a comparative view of how scholars have dealt with similar concerns in the study of Judaism and Christianity; and A Critical Appraisal, which offers a direct challenge to Safi and Hughes.

Abstract:
Terrorism is first and foremost viewed as a matter of security policy; however, its emergence, perception, effects, prevention and mitigation actually involve a multitude of societal sectors as well as academic fields, which also means that numerous academics, practitioners and decision-makers are in a position to contribute to analysing and countering terrorism. This handbook serves as the first German-language reference work on terrorism studies, capturing the complexity of this subject in its entirety. By using theories and perspectives from various academic disciplines, the handbook encourages scholars and students to apply their expertise to the field of terrorism studies and to emphasise interdisciplinary work. With contributions by Sebastian Baden, Stefanie Ballscheidt, Constanze Beierlein, Brahim Ben Slama, Christina Binder, Yannick Birlinger, Dana Bönisch, Raphael Bossong, Damaris Braun, Donald E.
