Abstract:
This article explores the metaphor of the scapegoat by offering a case study taken from the history of France at the turn of the 20th-century. The case is presented of a French army officer, Captain Alfred Dreyfus, whose wrongful conviction for treason created an international sensation and tore French society apart. The author outlines the general features of the scapegoating dynamic and applies them to the Dreyfus case. He sets out the flow of events from Dreyfus’s first trial through to the official declaration of his innocence a century after his conviction, illustrating the tenacity of the scapegoating dynamic when an entire nation is caught up in the process. The view is put forward that it was the dramatic intervention by the novelist Emile Zola in the Dreyfus case which arrested the scapegoating process. The author asks what the implications of this might be for group analysis. At the centre of the Dreyfus case was the fact of his Jewishness. The author depicts anti-Semitism as a deeply rooted set of assumptions based on myths about the Jews. He touches on the origins of these myths in early monotheistic theology and in the political ideology of the Far Left and the Far Right. An explanation is offered for the persistence of these myths in our culture, which may extend to our understanding of myths surrounding other peoples and societies. The author concludes with some reflections on the recurring nature of the scapegoat phenomenon.

Abstract:
AbstractThe poet, traveller, Arabist and campaigning anti-imperialist Wilfrid Blunt, who visited Gobineau in 1871, described him in his diary as follows: “Gobineau is a man of about 55, with grey hair and moustache, dark rather prominent eyes, sallow complexion, and tall figure with brisk almost jerky gait. In temperament he is nervous, energetic in manner, observant, but distrait, passing rapidly from thought to thought, a good talker but a bad listener. He is a savant, novelist, poet, sculptor, archaeologist, a man of taste, a man of the world”.1On December 16 1904, Marcel Proust wrote to an old friend from schooldays, “Me voici gobinien. Je ne pense qu’à lui”.2That old friend was Robert Dreyfus, the brother of the Jewish officer Alfred Dreyfus, and, together with Proust, one of the leading campaigners for Alfred's release from Devil's Island. (Alfred was only fully exonerated in 1906.) Proust, of course, skilfully worked the scandals and passions of the Dreyfus Affair into his great sequence of novels,À la recherche du temps perdu. As for Robert, he was to publish his Souvenirs sur Marcel Proust in 1926. But he had also published an admiring monograph entitledLa vie et prophéties du Comte de Gobineauin 1909. All this may suggest that, though Count Joseph-Arthur de Gobineau (1816-82) was a racist, he may not have been a conventional one.

Abstract:
Artykuł dotyczy filmu Romana Polańskiego Oficer i szpieg, którego akcja została oparta na historii jednego z najsłynniejszych procesów sądowych, tzw. afery Dreyfusa.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The Dreyfus Affair has been dealt with by innumerable historical works; the public opinion about the events has often been studied; but, in the sources usually exploited, the concerns of "ordinary" Frenchmen with the Case has remained uneasy to identify. Beyond the commitment of Dreyfusard Intellectuals, against the overt hostility of the fiercest Antidreyfusards in the streets, faced with the indifference of most French or with their trust in the verdict of the court martial, was there any Dreyfusard opinion ? How did it grow and express itself ? What part did they intended to play ? By studying the petitions and correspondence received by Dreyfus, his family and his defenders, this work aims at drawing a description of these unknown French who sided with the Dreyfusards, understanding their interpretation of the events, far out from the most involved circles. It tries to describe the way they apprehend the events, their motives for siding with those who were calling for the review of the 1894 trial that sentenced Dreyfus, and their reflexive understanding of their own role within the Dreyfusard mobilization

Abstract: The initial goal of this research was to investigate if Dreyfus affair's history - in which the jewish officer Alfred Dreyfus was unfaithfully accused of home betrayal - would have stimulated brazilian writers. Although, unlikely in France, where writers such as Anatole France, Marcel Proust and Zola himself put some affair's events inside their novels, here nothing was found on the same level, despite the affair's strong presence in brazilian media. Then, we start to analyse some chronicles, magazine articles and other sources aiming to elaborate the reception based on a common writing style. This style has as the main theoric source the melodramatic imagination by Peter Brooks (1995), based on which we analyse some of the documents found in our archive research (Casa de Rui Barbosa, Arquivo Edgar Leuenroth e Arquivo Histórico Judaico Brasileiro). After this first approach, we tried to integrate another idea, specifically attached to the brazilian scenario: an "bacharelesco" style (derived from the law rhetoric) that seemed to appear in the majority of the analysed texts. Finally, we tried to compose the caracteristics of this hybrid, here called "melodrama bacharelesco", in an attempt to achieve a large and possible understanding of of Dreyfus affair's reception in Brazil.
