Abstract:
The estimation of integrals by Monte Carlo sampling is introduced through a simple example. The chapter then explains importance sampling, and the use of the Metropolis and Barker forms of the transition matrix defined in terms of the underlying matrix of the Markov chain. The creation of an appropriately weighted set of states in the canonical ensemble is described in detail and the method is extended to the isothermal–isobaric, grand canonical and semi-grand ensembles. The Monte Carlo simulation of molecular fluids and fluids containing flexible molecules using a reptation algorithm is discussed. The parallel tempering or replica exchange method for more efficient exploration of the phase space is introduced, and recent advances including solute tempering and convective replica exchange algorithms are described.

Abstract:
The book provides a comprehensive and authoritative analysis on the regulation of financial markets and market infrastructure. It focuses on stock markets and exchanges, associated trading, clearing, and settlement, and on payment systems, set in their historical and current contexts. This new edition addresses a number of major developments that have impacted the UK, wider European and international financial markets, such as within the UK, the PRA, the FCA and the Bank of England have become established financial regulators, each with its distinguishing responsibilities; MiFID has been substantially revised and strengthened through new directly applicable EU regulation; MiFID 2 also addresses the challenges posed by the use of fast-technology such as high frequency and algorithmic trading; and new technology is beginning to make an impact on the infrastructure of financial markets. This new edition includes updated content on the growing importance of financial technology with two new chapters on the emerging impact of financial technology on markets and on the regulation of markets. There is also a new chapter on MiFID 2 and MiFIR – the new securities trading architecture that will see the introduction of a new trading venue as well as significant changes to and the pre- and post-trade transparency and reporting regime. The introduction of mandatory trading of derivatives on trading venues is addressed together with the related post-EMIR regime for the mandatory clearing of certain classes of derivatives. Chapters on the role of the European Commission and ESMA have been updated, and consideration is given to the possible implications of Brexit for market location and access

Abstract:
The lungs exchange gases and also provide for some metabolic functions. Respiratory failure can be grouped into types I-IV. Type I (hypoxemic) and type II (hypercapnic) are the most prominent; type III is perioperative and often considered a subset of type I, while type IV is due to shock. Pulmonary urgencies and emergencies require rapid diagnosis and treatment in order to avoid morbidity and mortality. Identification of risk factors for desaturation and the application of an appropriate management algorithm can facilitate diagnosis and management. The ABCD-A SWIFT CHECK algorithm and its subalgorithms represent a logical approach to rapid diagnosis and management.

Bao, Yun, Carl Chiarella, and Boda Kang. Particle Filters for Markov-Switching Stochastic Volatility Models. Edited by Shu-Heng Chen, Mak Kaboudan, and Ye-Rong Du. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199844371.013.9.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter proposes an auxiliary particle filter algorithm for inference in regime switching stochastic volatility models in which the regime state is governed by a first-order Markov chain. It proposes an ongoing updated Dirichlet distribution to estimate the transition probabilities of the Markov chain in the auxiliary particle filter. A simulation-based algorithm is presented for the method that demonstrates the ability to estimate a class of models in which the probability that the system state transits from one regime to a different regime is relatively high. The methodology is implemented in order to analyze a real-time series, namely, the foreign exchange rate between the Australian dollar and the South Korean won.

Makatjane, Katleho, and Roscoe van Wyk. Identifying structural changes in the exchange rates of South Africa as a regime-switching process. UNU-WIDER, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.35188/unu-wider/2020/919-8.

Full text
Abstract:
Exchange rate volatility is said to exemplify the economic health of a country. Exchange rate break points (known as structural breaks) have a momentous impact on the macroeconomy of a country. Nonetheless, this country study makes use of both unsupervised and supervised machine learning algorithms to classify structural changes as regime shifts in real exchange rates in South Africa. Weekly data for the period January 2003–June 2020 are used. To these data we apply both non-linear principal component analysis and Markov-switching generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity. The former approach is used to reduce the dimensionality of the data using an orthogonal linear transformation by preserving the statistical variance of the data, with the proviso that a new trait is non-linearly independent, and it identifies the number of regime switches that are to be used in the Markov-switching model. The latter is used to partition the variance in each regime by allowing an estimation of multiple break transitions. The transition breakpoints estimates derived from this machine learning approach produce results that are comparable to other methods on similar system sizes. Application of these methods shows that the machine learning approach can also be employed to identify structural changes as a regime-switching process. During times of financial crisis, the growing concern over exchange rate volatility, including its adverse effects on employment and growth, broadens the debates on exchange rate policies. Our results should help the South African monetary policy committee to anticipate when exchange rates will pick up and be prepared for the effects of periods of high exchange rates.

Abstract:
The difficult airway chapter focuses on preparing the clinician for a challenging airway. Management of both the expected, as well as the unexpected, difficult airway is critical to the care of the perioperative patient. Proper patient evaluation, organization, and preparation with a variety of airway tools are imperative to successfully securing the airway. The chapter reviews the difficult airway algorithm and discusses advanced airway techniques such as the use of awake intubation, airway exchange catheters, supraglottic airway devices, and surgical airway. Gaining familiarity with and using these advanced airway techniques in non-urgent situations will help ensure success when they are needed in emergencies.

Abstract:
This publication contains studies conducted by authors from several European countries that have cooperated with each other for many years in the field of human rights. The fruit of this cooperation are numerous conferences and publications in various languages. What is most important, however, is the exchange of experiences and opinions on understanding and application of individual human rights from the perspective of the experiences of societies living in the European cultural circle, and at the same time functioning in different historical and geographical conditions. This publication is an attempt to look at human rights from the perspective of the dynamic progress that is connected with the development of ICT tools. It is not only about digitization or automation of human work, but above all about creating a virtual society, in which artificial intelligence plays an important role. A significant part of human activity, especially interpersonal communication, takes place with the use of social media. Moreover, individual contact with public authorities are being gradually replaced by intelligent computer programs. In the United States, there is already an IT system, which adjudicates in minor misdemeanor cases. Modern researches in IT sector aim to build programs that allow to support human thinking through recommendation algorithms or suggesting automatically learned solutions, and even aim at autonomous decision-making. This last level of shifting responsibility for decisions to artificial intelligence is assessed extremely positive by many people, but also brings many fears. A virtual society built with the use of artificial intelligence changes the perception of many human rights, such as the right to good name, the right to freely express one’s opinion, the right to property, the right to state or national identity. Hence this publication contains various opinions on the artificial intelligence and its role in the functioning of society and importance for the life of an individual. The added value of this publication is the fact that it contains balanced views and assessments of authors from various European countries and academic societies conducting research on digital reality. This publication will certainly allow the reader to form his or her own opinion on human rights in the context of artificial intelligence.
