Abstract:
The essay presents a reconstruction and critical interpretation of four theories of authoritarian personality related to analysis of fascism. The first theory origins from a book The "Mass Psychology of Fascism" by Wilhelm Reich, published already before the Second World War, the second theory comes from a famous "The Authoritarian Personality" by Theodor W. Adorno. The third was presented by Alice Miller in "For Your Own Good", and the fourth – by Klaus Theweleit in groundbreaking "Male Fantasies". Only one of them, by Miller, refers directly to pedagogy. Nevertheless, the essay presents all four publications in relation to upbringing. The essay raises following questions: what is authoritarian personality? Which elements of education support its development and which prevent it? The theories are presented in relation to each other. Some of their conclusions are consistent, but other present conflicting positions. The dialectical method applied by the author enables to see, among others, how Adorno’s theories are put upside down by Miller, as well as Theweleit, who develops Reich’s ideas. The reconstruction of the dialogue between presented theories enables to put new questions related to the role of authoritarian personality in contemporary times.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In the following article Benjamin Lloyd uses the work of the noted Swiss psychologist Alice Miller to propose a new archetype – ‘the wounded actor’, a person in the throes of a narcissistic disorder, as defined by Miller in her book The Drama of the Gifted Child. He suggests that conventional actor training will not help the wounded actor, but that the re-introduction of spirituality into the acting-class curriculum may do so. In this light he looks at Stanislavsky's writings about spirituality, focusing on the chapter in An Actor Prepares called ‘Communion’. Linking Stanislavsky's spirituality to the writings and thought of Leo Tolstoy, he explores the reasons why the spiritual nature of Stanislavsky's work has not been generally explored in the West, and suggests some ways in which acting teachers may introduce spiritual concerns into their curricula. Benjamin Lloyd teaches at Villanova University. His The Actor's Way: a Journal of Self-Discovery in Letters is due for publication later this year by Allworth Press, New York, and he is currently facilitating a workshop on possible intersections between Quaker spiritual practice and theatre-making called ‘Revival: Meetings for Theatre’.

Abstract:
This study focusses on the role of the wounded child in the writing process of authors who write children's and youth literature. The psychoanalytic theories of Alice Miller will be discussed with reference to a selection of her publications. Miller's theories are used to determine if the experiences and repressed emotions of an author's childhood play a role in their contextual and practical choices when writing children's literature. Miller's arguments and research about child abuse, the reliving process and the body's memory will be used as a theoretical framework. A contextual sample analysis on fairy tales will first be done, because it is considered an established form of children's literature. Hans Christian Andersen is used as a case study, due to the direct authorship of his fairy tales. In his case the theories of Melanie Klein will be used to complement those of Miller. This will be done in order to examine the role of Andersen's mother and grandmother within his fairy tales. The use of Klein's work is due to Miller's rejection of Freud. Klein incorporates Freud, whereas Miller rejects his concepts. Klein's theory will support Miller's as well as provide an additional perspective on child psychoanalysis. Selected characterisations and narratives within fairy tales will be singled out to demonstrate arguments from Miller's theories. The children's and youth literature of Fanie Viljoen, François Bloemhof and Verna Vels will be considered in order to determine if Miller's theories could deliver similar results as in the fairy tale sample analysis. Aspects which will be examined are the writing process, motivation for the creation of texts, prominent themes as well as practical choices surrounding narrative. Miller's concept of a "wounded" child will be examined in relation to the author and the writing process. The function of the wounded child and why Miller is the most appropriate reading strategy for children's and youth literature will be argued. To conclude, the actual goal of children's and youth literature and the most appropriate approach to it will be discussed. The practice of bibliotherapy will be presented as a practical example of the use of children's and youth literature. The point of this study is that the reliving process, to which Miller refers, results in the author returning to specific traumatic, embarrassing or extremely happy moments in his or her childhood. This process makes it possible to refer to a "wounded" child, where the profound nature of an experience points towards an ideal reader for which the writer creates the text.

Abstract:
Different prerequisites for war exists and varies due to the terrain. Cities, mountains and covered terrain all creates their special conditions for the battle. The biggest difference in methods is found between the urban warfare and all the other ways of fighting in war. Combined arms constitutes the fundamentals of fighting a war, and organizing armed forces. But if the environment of the war is changing, the different prerequisites of combined arms need to change. The purpose of this study is to survey the distinguishing differences and prerequisites between the two kinds of environments, described in the invasion and fight in Rumaila oil field (2003) and Operation Phantom Fury (2004). By analyzing these cases, the purpose of this theory consuming case study is to explore and examine the use of combined arms in different environments during the Iraqi war in between 2003 and 2004. The analytical results reveal that the prerequisites before Operation Phantom Fury that made the operation successful was premonition to all the civilians in the city of Fallujah, the aggressive and massive use of indirect fire support, the reorganization of the divisions backbone, infantry, and finally the knowledge from earlier operations in Fallujah.

Abstract:
In ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions, the QCD matter is under extreme conditions of energy density, forming a quark-gluon plasma (QGP), in which quarks and gluons are deconfined. At RHIC and LHC energies, a large baryon-to-meson ratio, like Λ/K0S, was observed within the transverse momentum range 2 < pT < 6 GeV/c for central heavy-ion collisions. The goal of this dissertation is to verify if the baryon-to-meson enhancement is only due to collective effects of the bulk of matter, and if there is also a contribution related to in-medium modifications of parton fragmentation. With two-hadron angular correlations, the K0S and Λ produced in association to an energetic hadron (hard processes) are separated from those originated from the thermalised medium (soft processes). The differential Λ/K0S ratios related to the soft or hard production processes are extracted. The results are obtained for the Pb-Pb collisions at √sNN = 2.76 TeV recorded in 2011 with the ALICE experiment

Abstract:
This chapter details Anna Botsford Comstock's early days in the nature study education movement. She joined several key figures—Alice McCloskey, Julia Rogers, and Mary Rogers Miller—who were already involved in nature education initiatives at Cornell University with Liberty Hyde Bailey. During the years 1891 to 1893 there was general agricultural depression in the East, and New York City found itself called upon, for the first time in history, to help people who flocked in from the rural districts in search of work. Mr. George T. Powell, who was director of Farmers' Institutes, was called in as an expert in a conference to consider the situation. He maintained that poor farming was one of the reasons for agricultural depression, and that the only permanent remedy would be to interest the children of the rural districts in farming. He also declared that nature study was the means to use to interest the child in the farm.

Abstract:
This study addresses air-water, two-phase flows in micro-channels fabricated on poly-methyl-methacrylate (PMMA) with walls that are partially non-wetting (typical static contact angle 65° in stock form) and not molecularly smooth. Two different types of chips were prepared: Micro-milled micro-channels of aspect ratios 1, 2 and 3 with fixed hydraulic diameter on PMMA and micro-channels of unity aspect ratio replicated using hot embossing of PMMA with a micro-milled brass mold insert. Flow-maps obtained using the same gas-liquid injection geometry and method for the three aspect ratio micro-channels are presented, and regime boundaries are compared with those found by other investigations. The results indicate that the bubbly flow regime boundary is shifted to higher liquid and/or lower gas superficial velocities for the higher aspect ratio channels, while transition to the Annular and Annular-Dry regimes remains the same to within experimental uncertainty. The emphasis of what is presented is on the Segmented flow regime. Regular and irregular Segmented flow regimes of three types are assessed on the basis of the statistical variation in the associated phase length scales from flow observations over a substantial channel length. Comparison between results of the two different injection geometries and micro-channel manufacturing techniques indicate that feedback effects are a significant but not the only cause of segmented flow irregularity. The variability in the size of the liquid plug separating gas bubbles in Segmented flow is found to be substantially higher than that of the bubbles even when the flow is regular (low variability of bubble size). The average bubble length associated with a part of Segmented flows, regular and irregular alike is shown to scale approximately with the capillary number to the 2/3 power (liquid volumetric flow ratio to the −2/3). Irregular Segmented flow is favored by higher liquid superficial velocities, lower liquid volumetric flow ratios and lower channel aspect ratios. Of the three aspect ratios examined, the microchannel with aspect-ratio 3 displayed the broadest window of regular Segmented flow. Two-phase flow pressure drop was measured for test channels of unity aspect ratio. Each flow regime identified on the basis of topological observations is associated with different trends of the pressure drop variation with respect to volumetric flow ratio.

Abstract:
Natural gas as a transportation fuel is a practical and viable replacement for petroleum based fuels. To implement natural gas fuel technologies, strategic plans must be put in place by city, state, and national agencies to not only fund the technology with monetary investments but also fund the social change to encourage long term technology growth. With the discovery and exploration of the Marcellus Shale the potential for natural gas infiltration as a fuel into the transportation market has grown exponentially. The region of interest for this specific plan focuses on a 150 mile radius around the Pittsburgh metropolis as the initial test bed region of interest. This region lies upon the Marcellus Shale and therefore there is a positive push towards the use of natural gas fueled by local interest. This region has the intellectual knowhow from universities and government agencies alike to develop technologies from theoretical design to product deployment. To ensure an effective and successful strategy the methodology of this investigation was one which looked to the past, present and the future. Past strategies were studied to determine what key features lead to success, the present was explored to define what laws and regulations are in place which affects the new technologies, and the future benefits of a successful implementation were hypothesized based on economic theory. The proposed strategy is a closed loop operation; meaning one industrious customer is temporarily both the supply and the demand chain of the technology. Public and private investments are vital to a successful implementation in the region by steering social awareness and subsidizing the market.

Abstract:
It is not uncommon nowadays to have a new floating production facility installed with steel catenary risers (SCRs) as the main method for receiving and exporting fluids. The use of steel catenary in deeper and shallower waters alike where it was challenging and even unthinkable some years back is now feasible. Advancements in the SCR technology cover not only design and software, but also manufacturing, installation methods and capabilities. Since the first author’s OMAE 2001 paper “New Frontiers in the Design of Steel Catenary Risers for Floating Production Systems” [1] was published, a number of significant advances have been made in the design, manufacture and installation of steel catenary risers. In design aspects for example, the soil structure interaction and modeling of soil stiffness and trench formation has been the topic of many publications and research. The manufacturing capabilities of the pipe mills to produce and machine SCR pipe joints with upset ends has been advanced and implemented in recent projects. Advancement in the capability of Automated Ultrasonic Testing (AUT) systems to detect very small flaws in thick carbon steel and clad pipe welds is expanding the manufacturing envelop of SCRs while meeting design requirements. In addition, there is improvement in the capabilities of installation vessels; and more comprehensive material and fatigue test data have been accumulated providing data better basis to design and perform fracture mechanics analysis of SCRs. Lazy wave SCR configurations are being used to significantly expand the application of SCR technology to high motion vessels and more severe environments. This paper contains a review of the current state of the art with a description of some of the important advancements that have extended the range of applicability of SCR technology. The SCR technology advancements presented and discussed in this paper include a better understanding of the soil behavior and trench formation with some analytical results, the use of upset ends and their manufacturing options, improvement in the AUT systems and flaw detection capabilities, CRA clad SCRs and Lazy Wave SCRs.
