Abstract:
AbstractThis article reflects on the significance of genealogy for Sayyids and other Muslim elites in British North India by exploring some literary productions and political endeavours of the Aligarh movement. At the end of the nineteenth century, poems recalling the extra-Indian origins of Muslim elites became increasingly popular, as Altaf Husain Hali's Musaddas best exemplified. Translating an anxiety of seeing their power and influence reduced in the colonial world, such nostalgic discourse, intertwining representations of lineage and authority, promptly entered the political realm. The genealogy rhetoric deployed in Urdu poetry played a significant role in sustaining the claims of the leaders of the Aligarh movement as they strove to bolster a cohesive sharīf community identity and secure political leadership during the anti-Congress propaganda of 1888 as well as to obtain advantages from British officials according to their so-called political importance. In this context, this article emphasises that in Aligarh's nostalgic poetry, the greatest political weight was put on belonging to the ashrāf category rather than to the Sayyids, who only occasionally feature in the sources.

Abstract:
Surveys of major rice growing districts in the state of Uttar Pradesh in Northern India were conducted for 3 consecutive years during 2013 to 2015 under a government-funded major research project to determine the frequency of occurrence and disease incidence of the rice root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne graminicola, in rice paddy fields. More than 800 paddy fields from 88 Tehsils (divisions within a district) in 18 major rice growing districts in Uttar Pradesh were surveyed, where M. graminicola was associated with root-knot disease in rice paddy fields based on morphological and molecular characterization of juveniles and adults. The highest frequency of disease in rice fields was observed in Aligarh (44.6%), followed by Muzaffarnagar, Shahjahanpur, and Kheri Lakhimpur (29.3, 28.0, and 27.4%, respectively). Maximum disease incidence was also recorded in Aligarh (44.6%), followed by Sultanpur, Mainpuri, and Muzaffarnagar (5.7, 5.2, and 4.5, respectively). Gall index and egg mass index values (on a 0 to 10 scale) were highest in Aligarh (3.5 and 2.1, respectively), followed by Muzaffarnagar (2.6 and 2.0) and Mainpuri (2.3 and 1.8). The average soil population of M. graminicola was highest in Aligarh (3,851 ± 297 second-stage juveniles [J2]/kg of soil), followed by Muzaffarnagar (2,855 ± 602 J2/kg of soil), whereas the lowest population was recorded in Barabanki (695 ± 400 J2/kg of soil) at the time of harvesting. Relative yield losses were also determined, and the highest yield loss attributed to M. graminicola infestation was recorded in Aligarh (47%). The yield loss was linearly correlated with the soil population density of M. graminicola and disease incidence.

Abstract:
Except for a few initial centuries of Islamic history ,ijmā‘ has been considered the third basic source of the Sharī‘ah after the Qur’ān and Sunnah. It is often contended that a sort of consensus (ijmā‘) occurred amongst the jurists of medieval period which almost closed the door of independent reasoning (ijtihād). Though there were few exceptions, like Ibn Taymiyyah and others, who did not accept this position, these voices were few and far between and could not impact much. However, in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, there were many scholars who challenged this consensus. Among them were those who were associated with Aligaṛh movement. This article discusses the position of Aligarh school on ijmā‘ with special focus on the writings of Nawāb Muḥsin al-Mulk.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a comparative study of the educational reforms initiated by the Aligarh and Muhammadiyah movements in India and Indonesia respectively. It covers three main points: Ahmad Khan's and Ahmad Dahlan's educational philosophy; the educational system of the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College (MAOC) and Muhammadiyah schools; and the impact of the educational reforms of the two movements to Muslim education in general in the two countries. As will be explained in this thesis, Ahmad Khan and Ahmad Dahlan were deeply concerned with economic and social problems faced by the Muslims due to colonial policies. Both scholars came to the conviction that education was one of the most important ways to solve those problems. The two scholars, therefore, each contrived to design a new system of education for Muslims, which would produce graduates capable of meeting the new demands of the changing socio-political context while retaining their faith. Their ideas were eventually realized in the establishment of the MAOC and the Muhammadiyah schools, respectively. Even though these two institutions were unable to satisfy all Muslim aspirations, they succeeded in making Muslims in India and Indonesia aware of the need for pragmatic education, which was to contribute to the empowerment of Muslims in the colonial era.

"Comparison of surface matching and target matching for image-guided pelvic radiation therapy for both supine and prone patient positions." MULTIMED INC, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/617402.

Full text
Abstract:
We investigate the difference between surface matching and target matching for pelvic radiation image guidance. The uniqueness of our study is that all patients have multiple CT-on-rails (CTOR) scans to compare to corresponding AlignRT images. Ten patients receiving pelvic radiation were enrolled in this study. Two simulation CT scans were performed in supine and prone positions for each patient. Body surface contours were generated in treatment planning system and exported to AlignRT to serve as reference images. During treatment day, the patient was aligned to treatment isocenter with room lasers, and then scanned with both CTOR and AlignRT. Image-guidance shifts were calculated for both modalities by comparison to the simulation CT and the differences between them were analyzed for both supine and prone positions, respectively. These procedures were performed for each patient once per week for five weeks. The difference of patient displacement between AlignRT and CTOR was analyzed. For supine position, five patients had an average difference of displacement between AlignRT and CTOR along any direction (vertical, longitudinal, and lateral) greater than 0.5 cm, and one patient greater than 1 cm. Four patients had a maximum difference greater than 1 cm. For prone position, seven patients had an average difference greater than 0.5 cm, and three patients greater than 1 cm. Nine patients had a maximum difference greater than 1 cm. The difference of displacement between AlignRT and CTOR was greater for the prone position than for the supine position. For the patients studied here, surface matching does not appear to be an advisable image-guidance approach for pelvic radiation therapy for patients with either supine or prone position. There appears to be a potential for large alignment discrepancies (up to 2.25 cm) between surface matching and target matching.

Abbas, Amber Heather. "Narratives of belonging : Aligarh Muslim University and the partitioning of South Asia." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/25922.

Full text
Abstract:
The partition of India that accompanied that nation's independence in 1947 created the additional state of Pakistan; by 1971, this Pakistan had fractured into the two independent states of Pakistan and Bangladesh. This dissertation seeks to expand our temporal and spatial understanding of the sub-continent's partitioning by examining the experiences of a group of South Asian Muslims across time and space. As this dissertation will show, South Asia's partitioning includes more than the official history of boundary creation and division of assets, and more than the people's history of unbridled violence. I have oriented my investigation around a single institution, the Aligarh Muslim University, and spoken to former students of the 1940s and 1950s, whose young lives were shaped by the independence and partition of India. The memories of these former students of Aligarh University offer a lens for examining the "multiple realities" of partition and the decolonized experiences of South Asian Muslims. The educational institution at Aligarh, founded in 1875, had long been concerned with cultivating a sporting, activist, masculine identity among its students; Muslim League leaders further empowered that identity as they recruited students for election work in support of Pakistan. The students embraced the values of the demand for Pakistan that appeared to be consistent with the values engendered at Aligarh. This dissertation uncovers the history of these students throughout the 1947 partition and beyond. It explores unexpected histories of trauma among communities who "chose to stay" but later experienced a powerful discontinuity in independent India. It exposes contradictions evident in remembered histories from Pakistanis who express triumph and grief at the prospect of Pakistani independence. Finally, this dissertation assesses the position of Muslims after partition and how the "disturbances" that began in the late 1940s continue to affect them today in both lived and remembered experience. As a site for examining the "disturbances" of partition, Aligarh University proves to be a hub of a community that was and remains deeply disturbed by the changes partition wrought.
