This paper explores the issue of strategic alignment and enterprise systems (ES) implementation from the point of view of one organization involved in deploying an enterprise resource planning system globally. Two questions motivated this research. First, given that strategic information systems (IS) alignment is viewed as essential to organizational success in deriving value from information technology (IT) investments, what is the experience of organizations in practice in aligning their IT strategies with their business strategies? Second, what is the impact of global ES deployments on stra

AbstractThe AVENUE sustainability assessment integrates the environmental, economic and social assessment of the pilot trials of AVENUE. A step further, it adopts an interdisciplinary approach to conduct the analysis and to better understand the complexity of deploying a new form of mobility in urban areas and as part of the transportation system. The goal is to implement new mobility solutions that benefit the city and complement public transport. The findings from the social, environmental and economic impact assessments are embedded in a multidimensional set of indicators for the sustainability assessment of the automated minibuses. As a result, mobility radars are built to illustrate the assessment of the AVENUE demonstrator sites. The results reveal the state of the art of the current deployment of the automated minibuses in the AVENUE test sites. In addition, this study highlights other crucial elements for a sustainable deployment that rely on the mode of deployment of the automated minibuses, the level of integration to urban public transport or within MaaS perspective and the alignment with the city’s goals, planning and strategies for sustainable mobility. Ultimately, the automated minibuses are an innovative piece within the mobility ecosystem that could support intermodality, MaaS, mobility hubs and the use of soft modes of transport.

Abstract:
AbstractCities are actively deploying modern digital technologies to foster digitalization due to the emergence of data-driven innovations. Through modern digital technologies, municipalities aim to enhance services performance. Despite prior studies that focused on digital transformation in smart cities, there have been few studies aimed at managing service transformation and complexities needed to support cities in getting smarter. Also, as the deployment of information technology (IT) continues to grow within urban environment, there has been little research conducted that develops data-driven approach for digital services within urban environment. Additionally, cities are exploring methods of providing seamless mobility services based on collaboration among several enterprises and stakeholders in urban environment while achieving seamless data-driven services. Therefore, this study explores the adoption of Enterprise Architecture (EA) for digital transformations to achieve seamless urban mobility services. Qualitative data was collected using case study by interview from an organization that employs distributed ledger technology (DLT) to deploy digital services in smart cities. Findings from the interview sessions were modelled in ArchiMate language to illustrate the application of digital payment solution via DLT toward digitization of urban mobility services. The findings reveal that EA supports digital transformation of cities and manages data integration and alignment. Besides, findings from this study propose an EA approach to support urban planners and developers in understanding the actions required to implement digital transformation of their city services in becoming smarter.

IT Business Value (ITBV) research generally proposes that various “good” IT governance and management practices influence positively IT performance. Yet, this claim has proved hard to verify with empirical data. In this study we first identified and analyzed factors that are seen to influence IT deployment success, then hypothesized about the relationships among and between these factors and finally integrated the hypotheses into a research model. We then empirically evaluated the hypotheses and the entire research model. The consistency of IT investments as the response to the cyclical behavior of the economy is a novel factor introduced in this study to the ITBV research. Special attention was also placed on the perceived importance of IT to business, business-IT alignment and IT management. We used survey data of 212 responses collected from CxOs during an economic recession to test the hypotheses and the model for path coefficients and indirect effects. Empirical results confirmed that all research model factors influenced positively IT deployment success. Moreover, high values in the perceived importance of IT, business-IT alignment and the quality of IT management were discovered to be antecedents to the consistency of IT investments, and when that was achieved, the impact was positive on IT deployment success.

Abstract:
Value alignment, ensuring that artificial intelligence acts in ways aligned with humans, is a key challenge in the deployment of AI systems and an important aspect in the development of hybrid intelligence. A notable issue in value alignment is the lack of precision around what value alignment actually is and how to evaluate its success. Another issue is the fact that multiple agents are involved in value alignment, but these agents’ values may not be easily understood or expressed. In order for autonomous agents to readily adapt to these agents’ needs, and to promote interpretability of the system, an evidence-based means to assess the value priorities of agents is required. In my PhD, I am proposing a precise definition of value alignment through a qualitative concept analysis, synthesising themes from across the literature to produce a cohesive description. In addition, I am developing a novel mechanism for inter-agent value inference to enable agents to assess other agents’ values in an interpretable way. My PhD will generate a cohesive description of the value alignment problem, identifying sub-problems for further research, and build a means for autonomous agents to perform value inference in pursuit of achieving value alignment.

Abstract The previous chapter has already described the pharmaceutical industry as characterized more than ever by alliances, mergers, and acquisitions, followed by costcutting exercises and externalization of different activities at an increasing pace. The big pharmaceutical companies are struggling to increase their size in certain functions, by seeking economies of scale. Moreover, they are seeking further economies by combining traditional pharmaceutical R & D, production, and distribution with the acquisition of complementary technologies such as diagnostics and new R & D biotechnology firms. The deployment of IT and process infrastructures takes place in such turbulent industrial and organizational contexts that it cannot be considered in isolation from them. In general, the strategic intent of the major industry players is to further enhance globalization, recombination, and consolidation of activities.

The purpose of this study is to understand how a Locally Developed Enterprise System (LDES) in a developing country can be deployed and used for local requirements. Research on Enterprise System (ES) has focused more on developed countries and less on developing countries. Within the limited developing country literature, the dominant focus has been on imported ES rather than locally developed ES. An interpretive case study using semi-structured interviews was applied as the methodological stance and affordance theory as an analytical lens of the research. The research highlights that to meet local requirement, the strategic alignment of ES with local regulatory frameworks and operational needs, compliance and operational continuity, customizability and adaptability are critical. However, network dependency and infrastructure compatibility, tension between maintaining data integrity and providing flexible access to users were constraints. The study provide recommendations for research, policy and practice.
