Resumo: Este trabalho é fruto de uma pesquisa de resgate, em andamento, sobre a escritora sergipana Alina Paim, iniciada há dois anos, que apresenta um panorama da vida e obra dessa escritora que, embora tenha produzido cerca de dez romances, encontra-se à margem dos estudos literários, sendo desconhecida quase que totalmente tanto pelo público acadêmico quanto pelo público em geral. Seus romances abordam temáticas diversas, e priorizam as personagens femininas à procura de uma utopia do respeito e da participação harmoniosa da mulher na produção cultural, em meio a uma sociedade falocêntrica.Palavra s-chave: Alina Paim, romancista, vida.Abstract: This paper is part of a search in progress that tries to rescue the literary works by the Brazilian wiriter Alina Paim. Given the importance of this skill and the seriousness of its place in the framework of language teaching on the one hand, and poor care in the reality of teaching Arabic language, especially Indonesia, on the other hand, this little research seeks to introduce the idea in facilitating the teaching of speech skill and its introductory attempts, which include theoretical and practical aspects to achieve this goal, By evaluating the reality of speech skill in the methods of language teaching and the attention it receives from all these methods and bring the steps of teaching this skill in an appropriate manner taking into account the communicative applications in its education and address the weakness of learners.</p>

Com o objetivo de contribuir para a compreensão da história da formação de professores e para a história da literatura infantil brasileira, analisou-se a configuração textual do Guia dos pais na escolha de livros para crianças, de Nancy Larrick, especialista nos assuntos relacionados à leitura para crianças, publicado pelo Centro de Bibliotecnia para o Desenvolvimento do Instituto “Roberto Simonsen” (SP), em 1969. Esse livro é a tradução do original norte-americano A parent’s guide to childreen´s reading, publicado pelo Franklin Book Programs, em 1958. A tradução em língua portuguesa foi feita pela professora Alcina Jorge de Almeida e a adaptação pelo jornalista Leonardo Arroyo, com a supervisão do professor e psicólogo Manoel Lourenço Bergström Filho. Os resultados obtidos por meio da análise do Guia dos pais ... têm contribuído para a compreensão da necessidade apontada por especialistas em literatura infantil, leitura e bibliotecas para a infância, em meados do século XX, dentre eles Leonardo Arroyo e Lenyra Fraccaroli, quanto à orientação de pais e professores na escolha de bons livros para crianças e jovens. Nesse contexto educacional brasileiro, destaca-se também a elaboração de catálogos de livros para crianças, uma prática iniciada pelos pioneiros Lenyra Fraccaroli e Leonardo Arroyo.

The pledge is an item right based on which its official holder – the pledgee may seek the payment of his/her claims from the item if those aren’t paid within certain time limit. The right of pledge in the Republic of Kosovo constitutes a complex occurrence which has various relations on which at one side is the pledgee creditor, and in the other side are debtor pledgor and other third persons. The role of pledge and its affirmation is related to most qualitative changes of claims. The right of pledge as item right in foreign item (iura in re aliena) makes a history only to a certain degree of economic and social development. In this degree of development there was a need and necessity to secure the other’s claims even de facto, by the hand item, by ”pledging” of an item. The creditor requires that his claims to the debtor be secured by obtaining of a pledge of debtor item. The debtor’s conjunction of creditor by obtaining debtor’s item is safer for the creditor to realize its claims, rather than when the debtor secured these claims by his/her personality, bail, personal insurance. In the Kosovo legal system there is possessory pledge, non-possessory pledge and the pledge over the rights.

This publication continues to acquaint the readers with letters written by the historian and professor of the St. Sergius Theological Institute in Paris, Anton V. Kartashev, to his friend George I. Novitskii, who lived in New York. At the beginning of the year, A. V. Kartashev was still thinking about the second edition of his book “The Restoration of Holy Russia”, supplemented by a polemic with its critics. However, the main event in the life of the historian this year was the preparation of “Essays on the History of the Russian Church”. Despite his illness, he managed to prepare a manuscript of the book. A. V. Kartashev paid special attention to assessments of the Synodal period, which, unlike the pre-revolutionary tradition, he characterized positively. A significant place in the letters was occupied by the description of intrigues in the diocesan administration of the West European exarchate of the Russian parishes of the Patriarchate of Constantinople in connection with the anniversary of Metropolitan Vladimir (Tikhonitsky). A. V. Kartashev consistently upheld the principle of collegiality in church administration, and also sought to maintain the high authority of the St. Sergius Orthodox Theological Institute and its rector Bishop Cassian (Bezobrazov). The text of letters is aline with current spelling standards with preservation of some features of author's spelling of separate words and punctuation.

Background:Netakimab (NTK) is an anti-interleukin-17A monoclonal antibody approved for psoriasis, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriatic arthritis (PsA) in Russia and Belarus. PATERA is an ongoing phase 3 international double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study of NTK in PsA (NCT03598751).Objectives:A subanalysis was performed to assess the effect of NTK on domains of the 5-level EuroQol 5 Dimensions questionnaire (EQ-5D-5L) in patients with inflammatory back pain (IBP) (IBP(+)) and without (IBP(-)) at baseline according to self-reported ASAS IBP criteria, 2009.Methods:194 adult patients with PsA (CASPAR criteria, 2006) with inadequate response to csDMARD or one TNFi, were randomly assigned to receive NTK 120mg or placebo at weeks 0,1,2,4,6,8,10,14,18,22. The proportion of patients reported >1 problem in each domain was evaluated. Patients with missing values were considered as non-responders in the analysis.Results:97 PsA patients (N=54 IBP(+), N=43 IBP(-)) received NTK. The subpopulations didn’t differ significantly in gender, age, and PsA activity at baseline. Comparable percentage of patients reported any problems for each domain at baseline (p≥0.05) (data not shown). IBP(-) subpopulation had a greater improvement for all domains except of anxiety/depression. The absolute declines for IBP(+) vs IBP(-) patients were as followed: 24.1% vs 41.9% (mobility), 18.5 vs 41.9% (self-care), 24.0% vs 51.1% (usual activities), 24.1% vs 37.2% (pain/discomfort), 33.3% vs 9.3% (anxiety/depression). However, the only significant difference between IBP(+) and IBP(-) was observed in usual activity (Figure 1).Conclusion:NTK resulted in the growing improvement of each EQ-5D-5L domain through 24 weeks irrespectively of the presence of IBP. Abstract Background Recent outbreaks of Ebola virus disease in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) reinforce the desperate need to establish definitively the comparative safety and efficacy of different medical countermeasures (MCM). Methods Through a multipartner governance framework under WHO coordination, the Institut National de Recherche Biomédicale and NIAID collaborated with clinical partners (the MOH, ALIMA, MSF) to launch a randomized controlled trial in 2018 in the North Kivu/Ituri provinces of DRC. PCR+ participants receiving enhanced supportive care are being randomized 1:1:1:1 to receive either ZMapp™ (control arm), remdesivir, mAb114, or REG-EB3 according to standard treatment regimens. Stratification is by site, country, and baseline nucleoprotein (NP) PCR cycle threshold (CT) ≤ 22 or > 22. The primary objective is a comparison of 28-day mortality relative to the control arm. The planned accrual is for 125 patients per arm. Secondary objectives include an evaluation of the comparative safety and tolerability of the 4 investigational MCMs, relative changes in viral load over time, comparisons of treatment efficacy according to baseline risk categories, 58-day mortality, RNA clearance from semen, and an assessment of the validity of drug-class comparisons, including efficacy. The study is monitored by an independent data and safety monitoring committee (DSMB). Results Enrollment commenced in the Ebola Treatment Unit in Beni in November, 2018, with sites in Butembo and Katwa added in early 2019. Time from study concept initiation to study start was only 3.5 months. Ongoing hurdles encountered to date include maintenance of cold chain requirements for the MCMs and marked volatility in the security situation surrounding sites affecting staff and patient safety. Despite these challenges, data quality and completed follow-up have been remarkably high and by mid-April, 2019, accrual to date (see table) had already surpassed the predefined threshold triggering an interim DSMB review. Conclusion Scientifically rigorous and ethically sound clinical research can take place during disease outbreaks even within a conflict zone. Results about the relative efficacy of the evaluated investigational MCMs are pending the completion of the trial. Disclosures All Authors: No reported Disclosures.

This paper aims to present a mythic-symbolic reading on the novels A sombra do patriarca (1950) and A correnteza (1979) by Alina Paim, considering one of the oldest myths that is registered: the myth of the weaver, which remains present in memory of modern humans across cultures, different social, religious and artistic aspects. This study analyzes how the aforementioned myth and some mythic images relating to it are presented in Alina Paim´poetic in order to highlight its importance for the social and psychological developments of men nowadays. Therefore, is based on the studies of the the imaginary defended by Gilbert Durand, and some of theorists of myth such as E. Mielietinski, Northrop Frye, Mircea Eliade, Joseph Campbell, among others. Also dialogues with the analytical psychology by Carl G. Jung.<br>Este trabalho apresenta uma leitura mítico-simbólica das obras A sombra do patriarca (1950) e A correnteza (1979), de Alina Paim, a partir de um dos mitos mais antigos de que se tem registro: o mito da tecelã, que continua presente na memória do homem moderno através das culturas, diferentes segmentos sociais, religiosos e artísticos. Para esta pesquisa, buscou-se analisar como o referido mito e as imagens míticas relativas a ele se apresentam na poética paimiana, de modo a destacar a sua importância na formação do sujeito social e psicológico na contemporaneidade. Para tanto, pauta-se nos estudos do imaginário de Gilbert Durand, além de renomados teóricos do mito tais como E. Mielietinski, Northrop Frye, Mircea Eliade, Joseph Campbell, entre outros. To do so, it is grounded in literary criticism toward the children‟s and youth‟s literature held by Regina Zilberman (2005) and Tzvetan Todorov (2010), in order to show the importance of this type of literature on ethical education of the child, as well as the anthropology of the imaginary defended by Gilbert Durand (1989) and the myth criticism of Elieser Mielietinski (2002), aiming at emphasizing the presence of some archetypal images in the process of the child´s imagination created by the author, considering the account of myths and symbols that are taken during the human being´s quest for identity and Knowledge.<br>Este estudo faz uma leitura mítico-simbólica das narrativas infantis O lenço encantado (1962), A casa da coruja verde (1962) e Luzbela vestida de cigana (1963), de Alina Paim, a partir do mito e do maravilhoso. Para tanto, está embasado na crítica literária voltada para a literatura infanto-juvenil defendida por Regina Zilberman (2005) e Tzvetan Todorov (2010), a fim de mostrar a importância desse tipo de literatura na formação ética da criança, bem como pela antropologia do imaginário de Gilbert Durand (1989) e pela mitocrítica de Elieser Mielietinski (2002), visando a ressaltar as imagens arquetípicas que compõem o imaginário infantil criado pela autora, considerando a importância do mito e dos símbolos que configuram a incansável busca do Ser humano por conhecer a si mesmo. Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior<br>This paper has two integrated objectives: the first one concerns the presentation and dissemination of the academic work of Alina Paim, particularly her first novel The Freedom
Road (1944), and the second one refers to analysis of the imagery of female education through the Bildungsroman theory in the work of the writer in question. The work is
addressed in two dimensions: the formation of the image of woman / teacher and its social context, which brings us to the theme of struggle of gender and proletarian class exposed by Paim in her work. This analysis, that goes from the history of female education to the construction of the ideals of the teacher in society, seeks to draw a perspective of how women
have achieved their independence in social and personal contexts, moving from private to public areas, without losing the essence. A second dimension of the study is the analysis of traces of female education and transformation (the Bildung), through education, within the literary work. In the novel The Freedom Road, the trajectory of Marina is a fine example of how education and female instruction, even with the strong social stereotypes present at the time, change the position of women to others and to herself. In order to accomplish these goals, The material used was the theoretical support from the studies of history and women's education by Mary Del Priore, Guaraci Lopes Louro, Jane Adams, Elodia Xavier, among others, regarding the history of the process of educational and professional formation of women in Brazil; Cristina Ferreira Pinto, Wilma Patricia Maas, Eduardo Assis Duarte, among others, regarding the Bildungsroman theory, or novel of formation and learning, which fits our work perfectly. This research aims to lead to a reflection that focuses on women's position in society which was already discussed by Paim in the 40's, being inserted into the literary tradition, and giving proof to the changing role of education and the novel female formation.<br>O presente trabalho possui dois objetivos integrados: o primeiro diz respeito à apresentação e divulgação no meio acadêmico da obra de Alina Paim, em especial seu primeiro romance Estrada da Liberdade (1944); e o segundo, refere-se à análise do imaginário da educação feminina, através da teoria do Bildungsroman, na obra da escritora sergipana em questão. A obra é abordada em duas dimensões: a formação da imagem da mulher/professora e sua atuação social, que nos remete a temática proletária e de luta de classe e gênero exposta por Paim em sua obra. Essa análise, que parte da história da educação feminina até a construção do ideário da professora na sociedade, busca traçar uma perspectiva de como a mulher conquistou sua autonomia no âmbito social e pessoal, passando do espaço privado ao público, sem perder sua essência. Uma segunda dimensão do estudo é a análise dos traços de formação e transformação feminina (o Bildung), através da educação, dentro da obra literária. No romance Estrada da Liberdade, a trajetória de Marina é o exemplo de como a educação e a instrução feminina, mesmo com os fortes estereótipos sociais, mudam a posição da mulher
perante os outros e diante de si mesma. Para que esses objetivos fossem alcançados, foram utilizados como suporte teórico os estudos de História e Educação feminina de Mary Del Priore, Guaracira Lopes Louro, Jane Almeida, Elódia Xavier, entre outros, no tocante à história do processo educacional e profissional femininos no Brasil; Cristina Ferreira Pinto, Wilma Patrícia Maas, Eduardo Assis Duarte, entre outros, no que diz respeito ao Bildungsroman, ou seja, romance de formação e aprendizagem, que se enquadra perfeitamente em nosso trabalho. Essa investigação pretende conduzir à reflexão que focalize a posição da mulher na sociedade, que já era discutido por Paim na década de 40, o que a insere na tradição literária, além de provar o papel transformador da educação e do romance de formação feminino.

This study focuses on the heroine's mythical-psychological trajectory in the romance A correnteza, by Alina Paim, based on the hero's and heroine's mythical trajectories proposed by Joseph Campbell and Annis Pratt, as well as on the psychological implications of it as collective unconcious archetypes presented by Carl G. Jung and Erich Neumann. As the main character lives its individuation process, a tourtuous path that implies introspection, self analysis, symbolic death and rebirth, we could notice other myths that sustein the plot. Between them, we highlight, Medea's myth, based on Olga Rinne's view of the topic. We concluded that after going down her memories and estimate wins and loses, the heroine illuminated by the real Self becames an Old Wise.<br>Este estudo interpreta a trajetória mítico-psicológica da heroína no romance A correnteza, escrito por Alina Paim. Para tanto, estaremos embasados nas trajetórias mítica do herói e da heroína propostos, respectivamente, por Joseph Campbell e Annis Pratt, bem como nas implicações psicológicas do herói enquanto arquétipo do inconsciente coletivo apresentadas por Carl G. Jung e Erich Neumann. À medida que a protagonista vivencia seu processo de individuação, caminho tortuoso que implica introspecção, auto-análise, morte simbólica e renascimento, nos deparamos com outros motivos míticos que sustentam a narrativa. Dentre eles, destacamos, principalmente, o mito de Medéia, à luz das reflexões de Olga Rinne. This paper proposes a literary analysis of the novel A Hora Próxima, by Alina Paim, it´s try to recognize the marks of socialist realism, a cultural project led by the Communist Political Party of Brazil (PCB) in the years 1940 and 1950. In addition to the partisan press, literature played an important role in this project and the novel can be considered paradigmatic of the proposal. The fictional reconstruction of the railway strike was made through a real research by Alina Paim , that had troubles to this author and revealed the context of the Cold War in Brazil with the persecution of communist intellectuals. The streams of memory, we seek to reveal the relationship between memory, history and literature, discussing the limits and possibilities between history and fiction through the characters of Paim´s romance, which summarize the certainties and illusions of the cultural project of socialist realism in Brazilian literature.<br>Este trabalho propõe uma análise literária do romance A hora próxima, de Alina Paim, buscando reconhecer as marcas do realismo socialista, projeto cultural capitaneado pelo Partido Comunista do Brasil (PCB) nos anos 1940 e 1950. Além da imprensa partidária, a literatura desempenhou papel relevante neste projeto e o romance pode ser considerado paradigmático da proposta. A reconstrução ficcional da greve dos ferroviários foi feita por meio de pesquisa de campo, que trouxe dissabores à autora e revelaram o contexto da Guerra Fria no Brasil com a perseguição aos intelectuais comunistas. Pelos trilhos da memória, buscamos revelar as relações entre memória, história e literatura, discutindo os limites e possibilidades entre história e ficção através dos personagens do romance paimiano, que sintetizam as certezas e ilusões do projeto cultural do realismo socialista na literatura brasileira.

To remind, from French ´´se souvenir´´, give to us the idea, taken from its etymology, to surface what was submerged. And were pulling by the memory distant origins from childhood and juvenile times that the character Teodoro, in Alina Paim.s book ``A Sétima Vez´´ [``The Seventh Time´´], has surface his reminiscences. In his overture, at sixty-seven years old, in a period when the country was faced by a strong political repression that try to vedate any inquirer discurse about the history of the nation, this character begin to invalidate the prejudice still in course that restrincts the old age to the absence of desire, to the rigidity of actions and ideas, to the improductivity and to the lonely wait of the death, and decided to speak. This dissertational work proposes the hypothesis that the report written by Teodoro is a testemony about what it was to live under the age of repression in the brazilian militar dictatorship. By this reason, it is registered in the list of the Trauma Literature (SELLIGMANN-SILVA, 2003). Searching in the past the posible explanations to a phenomenon that happens with him, Teodoro makes use of the colective memory because he pursuits in his relationship with the family, friends and people of his childhood.s city the constitution of his identity and the explanation about what is happen un the actual days, precisely in the first part of the book, ``Eu, Teodoro´´ [``I, Teodoro´´]. In this dissertation, we intent to analyze this novel from the mobile memory (ARRIGUCCI JR., 1987), as traced by Ecléa Bosi (1994) in her work about memories of the old people [``Memória e Sociedade: Lembranças dos Velhos´´] and by Renato Franco and Márcio Selingmann-Silva (2003) and the disaster literature adopted in the book ``História, Memória e Literatura O Testemunho na Era das Catástrofes´´ [``Históry, Memory and Literature The testimony in the Age of catastrophes´´].<br>Lembrar-se, do francês se souvenir, passa-nos a ideia, por conta de sua etimologia, de vir à tona o que estava submerso. E foi puxando pela memória origens longínquas, da infância e de tempos da juventude, que o personagem Teodoro, do livro A sétima vez, da escritora Alina Paim, trouxe à tona suas reminiscências. Ao se abrir, aos sessenta e sete anos de idade, num período em que o país atravessava uma pesada repressão política, que tentava vedar com a censura qualquer discurso indagador sobre a história do país, este personagem começou por invalidar o preconceito, em curso até os dias atuais, que restringe a velhice à ausência de desejo, à rigidez de atos e ideias, à improdutividade e à espera solitária da morte quando decidiu falar. O presente trabalho dissertativo propõe a hipótese de que o relato escrito por Teodoro é um testemunho do que era viver a época da repressão da ditadura militar brasileira e, por esse motivo, está inscrito no rol da literatura do trauma (SELLIGMANN-SILVA, 2003). Ao buscar no passado as possíveis explicações para um fenômeno que lhe acontece, Teodoro faz uso da memória coletiva já que busca em suas relações com a família, com os amigos e pessoas da cidade de sua meninice constituir sua identidade e explicação para o que lhe acontece na atualidade, na primeira parte do livro intitulada Eu, Teodoro . Na presente dissertação, intentamos uma análise do romance a partir do móbile da memória (ARRIGUCCI JR., 1987) como traçado em Ecléa Bosi (1994) em sua obra sobre memórias de velhos Memória e Sociedade: lembranças dos velhos e da literatura de catástrofe trabalhada por Renato Franco e Márcio Seligmann-Silva (2003) no livro História, memória e literatura o testemunho na era das catástrofes.

Cette thèse vise à analyser, dans le roman L'Ombre du patriarche (1950), d’Alina Paim, les points d’adéquation et d’enlèvement du mythe traditionnel de la jeune fille-guerrier à fin de, ensuite, dessiner et illustrer la saga héroïque de la caractère Rachel, protagoniste de l'oeuvre. La sélection de ce roman était due à plusieurs similitudes entre la protagoniste et l'archétype de la jeune fille-guerrier, même en tenant compte du fait qu'elles sont placés dans des différents contextes socio-historiques. Cette recherche examinera comment la jeune fille-guerrier se présente dans le travail de Paim, en se détectant jusqu’à quelle mésure le récit peut contempler les marques de ce mythe. Comme support théorique, nous avons utilisé en plus, bien sûr, de la jeune fille-guerrier traditionnelle, presentée par Walnice Nogueira Galvão, le travail de Fabiana Ribeiro Batista sur la figuration de la jeune fille-guerrier à partir de l'approche hybride et d’un nouveau sens. Cette recherche est également soutenue par les contributions théoriques et méthodologiques de Joseph Campbell et Mircea Eliade ainsi que dans la théorie féministe et la critique littéraire. Après l'analyse du travail, nous avons confirmé l'hypothèse initiale qui a guidé le travail, à savoir, Alina Paim reprend le mythe de la figure féminine de jeune fille-guerrier dont les origines se perdent au fil du temps, en la revitalisant dans l'époque contemporaine.<br>Esta dissertação tem como objetivo analisar no romance A sombra do patriarca (1950), de Alina Paim, os pontos de adequação e afastamento do mito tradicional da donzela-guerreira a fim de, a seguir, traçar e ilustrar a saga heroica da personagem Raquel, protagonista da obra em foco. A seleção do referido romance deveu-se às várias semelhanças entre a protagonista e o arquétipo da donzela-guerreira, mesmo levando em consideração o fato de estarem inseridas em contextos sócio-históricos distintos. A presente pesquisa verificará como a donzela-guerreira se apresenta na obra de Paim, detectando-se até que ponto a narrativa consegue contemplar as marcas do referido mito. Como suporte teórico recorreu-se, além, logicamente, da donzela-guerreira tradicional apresentada por Walnice Nogueira Galvão, a Edilene Ribeiro Batista sobre a figuração da donzela-guerreira a partir da abordagem híbrida e ressignificada. Esta pesquisa encontra-se apoiada também nos aportes teórico-metodológicos Joseph Campbell e Mircea Eliade, bem como na teoria e crítica literária feminista. Após a análise da obra, confirmou-se a hipótese inicial que norteou o trabalho, ou seja, Alina Paim retoma o mito da donzela-guerreira, figura feminina cujas origens se perderam ao longo do tempo, revitalizando-a na contemporaneidade.

Previous issue date: 1998<br>Resumo: Os anos 50 no PCB são os de maior coesão das iniciativas culturais rumo a uma política cultural strictu sensu (RUBIM, 1986). Após o auge da imprensa comunista da década anterior - a segunda maior rede do país, funcionando na capital da república - e do breve período de legalidade obtido pelo partido, a literatura desponta como um mecanismo de educação política: é o auge do realismo socialista, "estética" do marxismo-leninismo, representada por Zdhanov. Um ensaio do crítico literário Astrojildo Pereira sobre o cânone literário e a função dos intelectuais na literatura, publicado em Idéias (Revista do IFCH-UNICAMP, ano 2, v.1), e o romance de Alina Paim, A Hora Próxima, podem demonstrar a amplitude deste debate na esquerda, então stalinista, da aclimatação do realismo socialista no Brasil. EnquantoAstrojildo tenta reescrever o cânone, rastreando nele uma tradição literária "insurrecional", a
romancista parte para a pesquisa de campo, narrando a greve de ferroviários em Cruzeiro de 1950, numa obra que a uma só edição, esgotou dez mil exemplares. O objetivo deste trabalho é a análise literária dessas produções, que podem iluminar não só um momento específico do trato da literatura - no âmbito da crítica e da produção ficcional - no PCB (em sua instrumentalização pedagógica ou articuladora), como também uma vertente inteira em luta pela hegemonia cultural no plano literário. Considerando a história das produções culturais do PCB, tento recuperar o sentido de se formular um novo cânone nessa época conturbada da história política do partido, bem como as funções que a literatura parece exercer neste contexto para esse grupo específico<br>Abstract: The 50's were for the PCS, the Srazilian communíst party, one of the most important moments in its history of cultural production. The communist press had seen its clímax as the second biggest Srazilian press agency in the republican capital. The party had grown in the legacy period after 1945. The repression in the fifties, however, seemed to put an end to its political life, but besides ali this, the literature was to be a part of its role: Zhdanov's socialist realism was the way this party would be fighting for the hegemony. Two literary production can show how this worked in the Brazilian context. In a crítical essay, Astrojildo Pereira tries to re-write the history of Brazilian literature, taking into consíderation the role of Brazilian intelligentsia and trying to track ín the canon the marks of a revolutionary tradition. On the other hand, the novelist Alina Paim goes ahead and tries an experimental novel about a real strike of railroad workers of Rede Mineira de Viação in 1950 ín the Vale do Paraíba area, crossed by the states of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais. Astrojildo Pereira's essay is probably part of a major discussion about cultural polítics for Brazilian literature in communísts meetings. Alina Paim's novel is the result of these discussions: this author was sent as a communist jounalist to interview people in order to . write a novef, telling about the strike experience and the PC's influence on it. There are more than 15 million people over age 65 currently living in the Arab world, yet little attention has been paid to the cultural significance of growing old. The book recognizes the widespread silence by countering the critical corpus that reads the modern Arabic novel as a political discourse with an emphasis on youth achievement. By offering close readings of 16 fictional works from different parts of the Arab world such as novels by Alia Mamdouh, Sahar Khalifah, Iman Kachachi, Rashid al-Daif and Alaa al-Aswany, the study utilizes biological and cultural theories of ageing- particularly from the perspective of gender and feminism- that shed light on the representation of ageing in the Arabic novel. The study makes use of feminist theories of ageing and gerontology that focus on sexism and ageism, including works by Simone de Beauvoir and Margaret Marganroth Gullette to present aging as a relational formation between men and women, and their idiosyncratic experiences of the process of ageing, revealing that there is no prototype of oldness in the Arabic novel and that older men and women manifest a multiplicity of identities, concerns and experiences. The study challenges the ungendered image generally attributed to older persons and examines how they navigate old age and subvert it. As they grow older men and women manifest a multiplicity of identities, concerns, and experiences revealing that the ageing process is an ongoing inherently unstable project.

AbstractThe existing scale of violations of the rule of law by some Member States, including capturing judicial independence by their governments, is a relatively new phenomenon for the EU; the one for which the EU based on the EU common values (Article 2 TEU) originally was not prepared to effectively deal with. The EU reacts to current rule of law crisis by using different legal methods and instruments: it inter alia applies existing procedures (Article 7 TEU procedure and with more success general infringement procedure under Articles 258-260 TFEU) and struggles to develop new ones. This contribution is focused on the new EU legislative initiative of connecting in the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) 2021–2027 transfers of EU funds to Member States with their observance of the rule of law. Or to put it differently, this legislative initiatives would authorize the EU institutions to suspend regular transfers of EU funds to Member States that systematically breach the rule of law.

Chapter 9 offers a detailed analysis of Philebus 42c–47d. Here, after first discussing a neutral state between pleasure and pain, Socrates introduces some ‘stroppy’ characters (duschereis) who are said to bear witness to the fact that there are some states that only seem to be pleasures, but aren’t so in reality, and others that have the appearance of enormous size, but which in truth are commingled with pain. This chapter (inter alia) sketches Socrates’ argument concerning the neutral state, explores the view that he wishes to attribute to the ‘Stroppies,’ explains how he employs their arguments and methodology, provides a reconstruction of an important missing part of their argument concerning the view that pleasure doesn’t really exist, explains how Socrates’ own account contrasts with that of the Stroppies, and explores the notions of false pleasure/pain in play in this part of the Philebus.

The effects of long-distance maritime trade on the economic and political development of the hinterlands of port-cities are as evident on either side of the Red Sea as in South-East Asia. Both great powers of the west profited from the India trade in the fifth century, but with the deterioration in their relations after the 502-5 war, the Persians imposed an embargo on Roman trade with India, which Justinian tried and failed to break. Hence it was mainly through Persia that the products of the south and the east, including garnets from south India and Sri Lanka, reached Europe. The gold received in tribute from the Romans was probably destined for India. Close attention should be paid to references to trade in contemporary writings by members of elites which were largely indifferent to economic matters. They reveal inter alia the existence of a powerful business lobby in the Sasanian Empire.
