Saving Alicia is a creative thesis written to explore the possibility of
incorporating some non-fictional concepts of neurophysiology into a work of
fiction. The initial component presents the historical and contemporary
context in which such a work is written along with an analysis of the writing
techniques employed by other writers in the field. It sets out the aim of the
subsequent creative composition.
The second, and major, component of this thesis is a work of fiction. A story
is developed in which the protagonist, a young woman, revives her deceased
mother's neurophysiological research work in the hope that it will help her
brain-damaged niece, Alicia, recover. For this she is dependent on two men
who were her mother's colleagues. As they compete for her attention, while
pursuing their own conflicting goals, the protagonist maintains her
determination to keep her mother's work going. She has no prior knowledge
of neurophysiology and, so that she can understand the research, she is keen
to learn some of its basic concepts.
Woven through the story of Saving Alicia are descriptions of neurons and their
physiology. This is presented to the protagonist through the mouths of the
two researchers. In this way, the non-fiction is interspersed with the fiction.

Thin-film silicon photovoltaics are seen as a good possibility for reducing the cost of solar electricity. The focus of this thesis is the ALICIA cell, a thin-film polycrystalline silicon solar cell made on a glass superstrate. The name ALICIA comes from the fabrication steps - ALuminium Induced Crystallisation, Ion Assisted deposition. The concept is to form a high-quality crystalline silicon layer on glass by Aluminium Induced Crystallisation (AIC). This is then the template from which to epitaxially grow the solar cell structure by Ion Assisted Deposition (IAD). IAD allows high-rate silicon epitaxy at low temperatures compatible with glass. In thin-film solar cells, light trapping is critical to increase the absorption of the solar spectrum. ALICIA cells have been fabricated on textured glass sheets, increasing light absorption due to their anti-reflection nature and light trapping properties. A 1.8 μm thick textured ALICIA cell absorbs 55% of the AM1.5G spectrum without a back-surface reflector, or 76% with an optimal reflector. Experimentally, Pigmented Diffuse Reflectors (PDRs) have been shown to be the best reflector. These highly reflective and optically diffuse materials increase the light-trapping potential and hence the short-circuit currents of ALICIA cells. In textured cells, the current increased by almost 30% compared to using a simple aluminium reflector. Current densities up to 13.7 mA/cm2 were achieved by application of a PDR to the best ALICIA cells. The electronic quality of the absorber layer of ALICIA cells is strongly determined by the epitaxy process. Very high-rate epitaxial growth decreases the crystalline quality of the epitaxial layer, but nevertheless increases the short-circuit current density of the solar cells. This indicates that the diffusion length in the absorber layer of the ALICIA cell is primarily limited by contamination, not crystal quality. Further gains in current density can therefore be achieved by increasing the deposition rate of the absorber layer, or by improving the vacuum quality. Large-area ALICIA cells were then fabricated, and series resistance reduced by using an interdigitated metallisation scheme. The best measured efficiency was 2.65%, with considerable efficiency gains still possible from optimisation of the epitaxial growth and metallisation processes.

This study explored psychological strengths within an African context. Individuals in the
North West province of South Africa are confronted with various stressors such as HIV,
crime and unemployment, and yet they are found to be functioning successfully in spite
of these stressors. The aim of the study was to identify the strengths that help individuals
cope in the face of the stressors confronting them. Particular strengths coinciding with
Western strengths were investigated, as well as those that appear to be specific to the
Setswana culture. The study comprised two phases. Phase 1 involved two focus groups
in an attempt to identify broad categories of strengths. Phase 2 involved individual
interviews aimed at an in-depth investigation of the said strengths. Participants were
mother-tongue speakers of the Setswana language, aged between 20 and 29 years, and
exposed to poor socia-economic conditions.
Whereas spirituality and a religious orientation amongst participants could be likened to
features of Western culture, its manifestation in an African context may differ. In a
similar way, the participants' hope and awareness of the future are regarded as strengths
within Western culture. Also the sense of humour that prevailed is seen as a strength by
Western communities. Wisdom, however, in spite of its positive status in Western terms,
has a different meaning in an African context.
Strengths that seem to be specific to the Setswana group include social support and a
community spirit, which can be regarded as their prime strength. Human skills directed
at the well-being of the group also belong to these unique strengths, and so do traditional
practices creating a feeling of belonging and participation. While these strengths appear
to be unique in Setswana culture, it is not implied that they are totally lacking in Western
society, but that they do not enjoy the same priority. Further research is recommended to

A pesquisa consiste no estudo dos projetos de habitação coletiva de Alison e Peter Smithson, compreendido entre os anos 1950 e 1972. São dois os projetos analisados, o projeto para Golden Lane, desenvolvido para um concurso, em 1951, e o conjunto Robin Hood Gardens, cuja construção foi finalizada no ano de 1972. Os procedimentos adotados para elaborar esta investigação foram o estudo da produção escrita dos arquitetos, bastante ampla e significativa para o entendimento global dos seus projetos, o redesenho das obras, incluindo a produção de desenhos e maquetes eletrônicas dos edifícios, o que possibilitou uma análise sistemática de cada um destes dois projetos, permitindo o entendimento da obra dos Smithsons e sua relação com o contexto do pós-guerra.This research consists of the study of council housing projects made by Alison and Peter Smithson, from1950 to 1972. Two projects were analysed: the project for Golden Lane, developed for a competition in 1951,and Robin Hood Gardens, whose construction was finished in 1972.The procedures adopted to elaborate this investigation were: the study of the architects' written production, extensive and significant to the overall understanding of their projects and the re-design of the projects, including the building of computer-generated scale models of the buildings, which allowed a systematic analysis of each of these two projects, thus bringing a good perception of the Smithson's work and their relation to the post-war context.

In study group of 8 children, the link between Plastic Arts and Psychomotor Education was obtained through different processes - gaming, emotional sharing and motor activity- inducing higher verbal and motor skills, and moments of discovery of how they perceived the world.
Observation and analysis of the children’s graphic expressions and motor skills, leads to enter and understand their intimate world and emotions related.
The way they used their bodies to attain/ develop such rich “graphic expressions”, shows that children interact creatively with the materials in a way that enhances their cognitive and emotional capabilities.
This “alliance” between Plastic Arts and Psychomotor Education represents a vast potential for enhancement of relational capabilities – motor, emotional and expression skills – towards a children’s healthy development.

[EN] Exhibitions are a cornerstone of Alison and Peter Smithsons' multifaceted approach to their work. A powerful medium for conveying and materialising their ideas which provided them, throughout their career, with the opportunity to freely create experimental constructions to relay their thoughts.
The exhibitions they staged in the 1950s and 60s, such as 'Parallel of Life and Art', 'House of the Future', and 'Patio & Pavilion' were, and still are, at least as important to architectural critics as their few built works or many writings. However, from the 1970s onwards little is known about their prolific work in the realm of exhibitions.
In his lecture 'The Masque and the Exhibition: Stages Towards the Real' in 1980, Peter Smithson mentioned the importance of exhibitions in shaping the Smithsons' architecture as places of opportunity in which to experiment with reality. This comment makes it logical to think that if the exhibitions held before then had always been a powerful tool - a tool used, furthermore, by the Smithsons to create some of their most intense productions - then those staged after said lecture, which acknowledged and highlighted this aspect of their work might, despite being little known, be at least as intense as the previous exhibitions with greater media visibility. This idea, together with the expectations raised by the 'Christmas-Hogmanay' exhibition - not only because it was staged whilst said lecture was being drafted but also because of the ideas that sprang from the analysis of a related collage mentioned in the prelude to this doctoral thesis - channelled the research towards this final period of the Smithsons' exhibition architecture. The research herein focuses specifically on two groups of exhibitions that stand out amongst the Smithsons' wide range of documented exhibitions on account of their inherent intellectual cohesion enabling the concepts staged by Alison and Peter Smithson to be seen more clearly.
This doctoral thesis consists of four chapters. It begins with an introductory chapter which firstly analyses and contextualises architecture in the shape of exhibitions; then outlines the importance of exhibitions in Alison and Peter Smithson's work; and finally puts the specific period under study into context in terms of both their career and the discourse of architecture in general.
The two main chapters in this thesis are entitled 'Christmas Exhibitions' and 'Tecta Exhibitions', each organised in a similar fashion: a short introduction to the group of exhibitions followed by an in-depth analysis of each exhibition in the group based mainly on the unpublished documentation to which the author had access in the three main archives devoted to Alison and Peter Smithson: The Alison and Peter Smithson Archive in the Special Collections Department of the Frances Loeb Library at Harvard Design School (USA); the Alison and Peter Smithson Archive / Tecta Archive at Lauenförde (Germany); and the Smithson Family Archive in Stamford (United Kingdom). Finally, each chapter ends with an essay which analyses and links up the different concepts conveyed by each individual exhibition and the exhibitions in the group as a whole.
The last chapter is a short epilogue that gathers up all the concepts set out previously in relation to the Christmas and Tecta exhibitions, and shows how they all tie in together in the Smithsons' most experimental work: the Hexenhaus at Bad Karlshafen.[ES] Dentro del enfoque polifácetico del trabajo de Alison and Peter Smithson, las exposiciones son pieza fundamental. Un medio poderoso para comunicar y materializar sus ideas que les brindó a lo largo de toda su trayectoria la oportunidad de abordar con libertad la construcción experimental de su pensamiento. Sus propuestas expositivas de la década de los cincuenta y sesenta, como Parallel of Life and Art, House of the Future, o Patio & Pavilion, han sido y son tanto o más relevantes para la crítica arquitectónica como sus escasas obras construidas o sus abundantes escritos. Sin embargo, a partir de la década de los setenta, poco se conoce de su prolífica producción expositiva. Esta consideración, unida a las expectativas generadas en torno a la exposición Christmas-Hogmanay, tanto por ser simultánea a la elaboración de dicha conferencia, como por las ideas que se desprenden del análisis de un collage vinculado a la misma que aparece como preludio de esta tesis doctoral, ha dirigido la investigación hacia este último periodo de su arquitectura expositiva. En concreto, el estudio se centra en dos grupos que, dentro del amplio abanico de montajes expositivos realizados, destacan por poseer una cohesión intelectual propia que permitirá descubrir con mayor claridad las reflexiones que Alison y Peter Smithson ponen en escena. La tesis doctoral se estructura en cuatro grandes apartados. Arranca con un capítulo de introducción dedicado a enmarcar el tema de estudio en el que primero se analiza y contextualiza la arquitectura hecha exposición; después, se presenta la relevancia que tiene la obra expositiva en el trabajo de Alison y Peter Smithson; y finalmente se contextualiza el periodo concreto en el que se centra el estudio atendiendo tanto a su propia trayectoria como al discurso arquitectónico general. Los dos grandes apartados de la disertación son las exposiciones de Navidad y las realizadas junto a TECTA, estructurándose ambos de manera similar. A partir d'aquesta reflexió, sembla lògic pensar que, si fins a eixe moment les dites instal·lacions sempre van ser una eina amb la qual els Smithson han ofert alguns dels seus moments més intensos, les que van realitzar a partir d'aquest moment de reconeixement conscient i posada en valor d'aquesta faceta del seu treball, tot i la poca difusió, podrien contenir una intensitat com a mínim similar a la d'aquelles que ja han destacat fins al moment en els mitjans. Aquesta consideració, unida a les expectatives generades entorn a l'exposició Christmas-Hogmanay, tant per ser simultània a l'elaboració de la dita conferència, com per les idees que es desprenen de l'anàlisi d'un collage vinculat a la mateixa que apareix com a preludi d'aquesta tesi doctoral, ha dirigit la investigació cap a aquest últim període de la seua arquitectura expositiva. En concret, l'estudi se centra en dos grups que, dins de l'ampli ventall de muntatges expositius realitzats, destaquen per posseir una cohesió intel·lectual pròpia que permetrà descobrir amb una major claredat les reflexions que Alison i Peter Smithson posen en escena. La tesi doctoral s'estructura en quatre grans capítols. Arrenca amb un apartat d'introducció dedicat a emmarcar el tema d'estudi, en què primer s'analitza i contextualitza l'arquitectura feta exposició; després, es presenta la rellevància que té l'obra expositiva en el treball d'Alison i Peter Smithson; i finalment es contextualitza el període concret en què se centra l'estudi, atenent tant a la seua pròpia trajectòria com al discurs arquitectònic general. Els dos grans capítols de la dissertació són les exposicions de Nadal i les realitzades junt amb TECTA, i s'estructuren tots dos de manera similar. Després d'una breu introducció al grup d'exposicions que s'analitzarà, apareixen amplament documentades cadascuna de les exposicions que conforma el grup, a partir principalment de la documentació inèdita a la qual s'ha tingut accés en els tres principals arxius dedicats a Alison i Peter Smithson: The Alison and Peter Smithson Archive a l'Special Collections Department de la Frances Loeb Library de la Harvard Design School (Estats Units d'Amèrica); The Alison and Peter Smithson Archiv / TECTA Archiv a Lauenförde (Alemanya); i The Smithson Family Archive a Stamford (Anglaterra). Finalment, cada capítol es tanca amb un assaig en què s'analitzen i relacionen les diferents reflexions que les exposicions ofereixen, de manera individual i en conjunt. L'últim capítol és un breu epíleg que reuneix i entrellaça tot allò exposat anteriorment, a través de les exposicions de Nadal i TECTA, en la seua obra més experimental, la Hexenhausen Bad Karlshafen.

The thesis looks in detail at three inter-related aspects of Alison's life. It examines, firstly, his role in the development of Edinburgh's rudimentary 'health' network, achieved through the expansion of the existing medical charity structure and the introduction of a more interventionist and coordinated approach to the city's health problems. It traces, secondly, the development of Alison's social thought - in 1820 he believed that medical and practical relief for the poor could and should be supplied through the voluntary charities and only when that proved unsatisfactory through the poor law, whereas by 1840 he argued that public health should be the responsibility of government and that the excessive increase in poverty and disease in Scotland, which he believed had occurred, was proof that the charitable and legal relief provided was inadequate. Finally, Alison's influence on the passage of Scottish poor law and public health legislation in the 1840s and 1850s is examined - the latter involving an assessment of how far he was responsible for the legislative delay. The poor law debate, 1840-1845, which reveals the forces shaping the reform and the prevailing attitudes to poverty, highlights the challenge which Alison's opinions represented and the resulting turmoil in Scottish social thinking, while his reasons for opposing health legislation, which established London control are of great importance. They reveal differences in the rationale behind, and way in which, the concept of public health was developed in Scotland and England. Unlike Chadwick and his supporters, Alison emphasised poverty amelioration and sanitary reform. Part of the explanation for the differing opinions lay in their respective miasmatic and contagionist theories for fever generation, but it also reflects, perhaps more significantly, the impact of European medical police ideas on Scottish medical opinion - Alison's view of public health closely resembled that of the French hygienists.

Resumo: Este trabalho tem como objetivo a análise da obra autobiográfica da cartunista estadunidense Alison Bechdel publicada no formato livro, composta, até o momento, por duas histórias em quadrinhos: Fun Home ¿ A Family Tragicomic (2006) e Are you my mother? ¿ A Comic Drama (2012). Além do estudo de obras autobiográficas em quadrinhos e as implicações desta combinação de meio e gênero, visamos observar a maneira como Bechdel estrutura suas narrativas através da intertextualidade com outras produções, sejam elas literárias, psicanalíticas, ou imagéticas. Abstract: The aim of this work is the analysis of the autobiographical work of American cartoonist Alison Bechdel, published in book form, composed, so far, of two comics: Fun Home ¿ A Family Tragicomic (2006) and Are you my mother? ¿ A Comic Drama (2012). Apart from the study of autobiographical works in comics and the implications of this specific media and genre combination, we aim to observe how Bechdel structures her narratives through intertextuality with other productions, such as literary, psychoanalytic, or imagery. Our attention will be focused on the use that Bechdel makes of such works and what is the connection between the building of parallels with the author's autobiographical production in which she articulates the works and biographies (of the characters related to her history and life experience) at various levels, as well as the way the author critically thinks, while constructing her autobiographies, of the act of autobiography itself

Work zones are an essential part of roads maintenance. Despite all the efforts addressed to reduce work zone’s negative impacts on the road traffic performance and improve the road safety, there still exist work zone related congestions and traffic problems. This thesis aims to study and analyze highway reconstruction/maintenance activities, their impacts and existing ways of reducing these negative effects and investigating the role of Intelligent Transport Systems in improvement of the difficulties caused by work zones. The research of the factors influencing capacity resulted in three factors presented in each considered study. The factors are heavy vehicle percentage, weather conditions and police presence. An unusual approach presented by Weng & Meng (2011) distinguishes among the examined analytical models. Their Decision-Tree model, based on training a large data set, showed significantly lower values of errors of prediction of level-of-service. Three different dynamic late merge systems (DLMS) have been simulated and analyzed using the AIMSUN micro-simulation software. The simulation outcome shows promising results favoring the use of DLMS. Among the simulated systems is extra focus put on the ALINEA algorithm that shows potential to improve traffic flow in work zones. Conducted sensitivity analysis shows different behaving of the ALINEA algorithm due to change of regulator parameter and critical occupancy. In order to investigate performance of the ALINEA algorithm, an extensive research has to be conducted. The research should include various work zone configurations as well as different values of heavy vehicle percentage and the parameters within the algorithms code should be subjects to optimization.

The remarks on this subject stem from the conditions spatial works engender in the encounter with the viewer. The aim has been to provide the reader with a framework within which to place individual experiences of the works. The exhibition Spatial Works, to which this research paper is connected, exemplifies variations within spatial work. By organizing an exhibition around this context, the variations presented is fleshed out. The research preceding the exhibition has resulted in the development of a specific terminology; an articulation of different practices in installation art. Psychodramatic, Thespian, Temporal and Permutation are here seen as mannerisms of spatial works of art. The expanded significance presented in this paper is a feature of composition, as the dramatic condition characterizes the encounter between object and subject. The polyphony of information encountered by the viewer is not only created by the art work itself, but also by its signifying composition, so to say `al fresco´ of the work, of which the observer gains certainty of the pieces spatiality as well as understands of the work of art.WIRE, Critical Writing and Curatorial Practice

Världens energianvändning är en central del i rådande klimatförändringar och smarta tekniklösningar tillsammans med nya beteendemönster är våra bästa verktyg för att minimera vår påverkan på planeten, däribland mest omtalat användningen av fossila bränslen. Detta arbete har utförts i samarbete med Caverion på beställning av Alimak group AB i Skellefteå, med syfte att undersöka gångbarheten i ett byte av värmekälla på en av Alimaks fastigheter, ifrån oljeeldning till fjärrvärme. Målet för arbetet har varit att ta fram ett konkret åtgärdsförslag, med tillhörande ekonomisk analys av lönsamheten i framlagt förslag. Genom undersökningar i form av litteraturstudier, beräkningar och platsbesök fastslogs fastighetens huvudsakliga effektbehov och ett helt nytt värmesystem dimensionerades. Energianvändningen beräknades varpå de teoretiska driftkostnaderna kunde tas fram och jämföras mellan dagslägets värmesystem samt med det förslagna åtgärdspaketet och dess kostnader. Resultatet blev ett komplett åtgärdsförslag där en investering på ungefär 555 Tkr innebär att fjärrvärme installeras på fastigheten och ett helt nytt värmedistributionssystem etableras. Tanken är att använda moderna fläktluftvärmare för att cirkulera rumsluften och värma upp den så att effektbehovet tillgodogörs med godtycklig marginal mot de osäkerheter som finns beräkningarna inbördes. Det föreslagna värmesystemet utmynnar i väsentligt minskade driftkostnader som betyder en årlig besparing på 380 Tkr med det nya värmesystemet och 480 Tkr om även ventilationen byggs om enligt Caverions förslag samtidigt. Vidare erhålls även en minskad klimatpåverkan av cirka 244 ton koldioxid per år. Utöver dessa huvudsakliga fördelar med förslaget så erhålls också en helt ny nivå av driftsäkerhet, reglerbarhet och översikt av anläggningen som i dagsläget inte finns. Med modern teknik kan hela värmesystemet styras centralt och automatiskt, samt kopplas ihop med förslaget ventilationssystem för en helt automatiserad drift av anläggningen.The current energy usage worldwide is playing a central part in polluting the atmosphere and accelerating climate change. Intelligent technical solutions coupled with new behavioral patterns are our best tools to battle climate change and minimize our impact on the planet. Amongst these innovations and changes to our lifestyle, a central part is our usage of fossil fuels, of which usage is being restricted by governments worldwide, commonly via taxes. This forces us to reinvent ourselves and search for other options where we can, to minimize both our costs and our emissions of greenhouse gases. Alimak in Skellefteå is currently finding themselves in a similar situation, and therefore requested a proposal for a new heating system on one of their properties to be delivered by Caverion via this report. The task at hand was to investigate the viability of changing out their current heating sources, three oil-furnaces to a new district heating powered system, and come up with a concrete proposal for a solution, and evaluate the economical profitability. Through a broad study of literature on the subject and several trips to the property to examine it, the heating power required to maintain an arbitrary indoor climate was calculated, with respect to the buildings shell, ventilation and infiltration. With this accomplished an entirely new heating system could be dimensioned to fit the property based on the given conditions. With this all done, the buildings annual energy consumption could be calculated and from that the theoretical operational costs emerged, to be compared with the oil-furnaces of today. The results of it all, is a proposal for a complete new heating package including fan-heaters, piping, control system and district heating substation. Amounting to an investment of 555 000 SEK, the system is deemed adequate to maintain a comfortable climate and circulate the warm air throughout the entirety of the rooms wherein the heaters are placed, and provide a sufficient margin of power given the uncertainties within the calculations. The investment turns out to lower the operational costs significantly, and an estimated 380-480 000 SEK will be saved annually depending on which of the options are chosen. Furthermore since this means that none of the oil-furnaces will remain, all the carbon dioxide emissions associated with heating the building are eliminated, previously amounting to a rough 244 tons annually in previous years. Needless to say this is a phenomenal gain for the environment. In addition to these main advantages of the proposal, there is also the completely enhanced level of operational reliability, controllability and overview of the plant that has previously not been available. With modern technology, the entire heating system can be controlled centrally and automatically and together with the proposed ventilation system the entire operation of building can be run fully automatically.

Resumo: O uso da região de espalhamento na espectrometria de raios-X (XRS, do inglês, X-Ray Spectrometry) aliada à quimiometria é uma aplicação recente que tem mostrado bons resultados na discriminação de amostras orgânicas. Nesse trabalho, a proposta de se utilizar XRS para solucionar um problema de classificação taxonômica de Lantana sp, utilizando-se folhas desse vegetal não foi alcançada devido à reconhecida evolução contínua desta espécie. No entanto, o estudo de espécies do gênero Musa e das famílias Polemoniaceae, Asteraceae e Portulacaceae, utilizando-se pseudofrutos e sementes, respectivamente foi bem sucedido. A análise de componentes principais (PCA) realizada com os espectros obtidos da irradiação dos pseudofrutos e das sementes mostrou boa correlação entre a disposição das amostras e a classificação nos níveis gênero, espécies e variedades. Variáveis que poderiam justificar a discriminação obtida desses vegetais foram estudadas como exemplo o estudo envolvendo a utilização de carboidratos. Foram realizadas: a regressão de sacarose, frutose e glicose em solução aquosa e frutose e glicose em suco, com bons coeficientes de linearidade (0,998; 0,995; 0,998; 0,994 e 0,991, respectivamente); a discriminação de carboidratos; a regressão do índice de doçura e a rotação específica da luz polarizada de carboidratos; e a regressão da inversão da sacarose. Além da discriminação dos vegetais e do estudo de carboidratos, esse trabalho também apresenta a fundamentação teórica para explicar o surgimento desta técnica e um provável potencial que ela poderá apresenta para o futuro
Abstract: The use of scattering on X-ray Spectrometry (XRS) allied to chemometrics is a new application that is showing good results in discrimination of organics. In the present work the proposal of applying XRS to solve the taxonomic classification of Lantana sp species, using leafs of these plants was not reached due to the evolution process this plant is still undergoing. Nevertheless, this motivated a discrimination study of species of Musa genus (banana) and species of Polemoniaceae, Portulacaceae and Asteraceae families, using fruits and seeds, respectively. Principal component analysis of spectra of fruits and seeds show good correlation between sample arrangement and taxonomic classification in genus, species and varieties. Looking for variables that could justify the discriminations obtained, studies were developed involving carbohydrates. It was realized: sucrose, fructose and glucose regression in aqueous solutions and fructose and glucose calibration in juice solutions with good linear coefficients (0.998; 0.995; 0.998; 0.994 e 0.991, respectively); carbohydrates discrimination; X-ray spectra correlation with sweetness degrees and specific rotation of polarized light of carbohydrates; and regression of kinetics of sucrose inversion. Besides the vegetable classifications and the carbohydrate studies, this work presents a theorical basis to explain the XRS characteristics, the history before the arising of this method and its potentialities for the future

O estudo da literatura e de objetos artísticos, por um viés da teoria Semiótica greimasiana, prevê que todo sentido é gerado a partir de articulações semióticas que arquitetam um discurso presente em todo e qualquer texto. Desse modo, o presente trabalho propõe uma análise semiótica da autobiografia em quadrinhos de Alison Bechdel, Fun Home:Uma tragicomédia em família. Por meio da metodologia da Semiótica francesa, a presente análise descreve os artifícios discursivos de persuasão do gênero autobiográfico utilizados pela quadrinista norte-americana para convencer o leitor de que está diante de uma história real. Tais artifícios apontam para uma aproximação da realidade por meio de efeitos de sentido predominantemente referenciais. No entanto, Bechdel (2007b) complexifica tal aproximação, ficcionalizando seus personagens por meio da literatura, não só pela própria natureza do enunciado, mas também como artifício discursivo no interior do texto. Além do gênero autobiográfico, analisa-se a estrutura dos quadrinhos e os efeitos de sentido produzidos pelo sincretismo inerente ao gênero, isto é, a relação entre texto verbal e texto visual. Também é analisada a temática lésbica que permeia todo o enunciado e a rede discursiva polêmica que problematiza. Na obra de Bechdel encontram-se, portanto, as relações entre o gênero autobiográfico, a sua textualização por meio do sistema dos quadrinhos e a pertinência entre eles para a literatura que abrange a temática lésbica.The study of literature and art objects from the standpoint of the Greimasian Semiotic Theory indicates that all meaning is generated from semiotic articulations that construct a discourse in any given text. Thus, this study proposes a semiotic analysis of Alison Bechdels graphic autobiography Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic. Through the methodology of French semiotics, this analysis describes the discursive devices of persuasion of the autobiographical genre used by the North American cartoonist to convince the reader that they are faced with a real story. Such devices point to an approximation of reality through predominantly referential meaning effects. However, Bechdel (2007b) complicates such an approximation, fictionalizing her characters through literature, not only due to the nature of the utterance, but also as a discursive device within the text. Besides the autobiographical genre, we analyze the structure of comics and the meaning effects produced by the syncretism inherent in the genre, that is, the relationship between verbal text and visual text. Also analyzed are the lesbian issues that permeate the whole utterance and the controversial discursive network that it examine. The proposal is to open a dialogue between language studies, sexuality studies and gender studies. In Bechdel\'s work there is, therefore, the relationship between the autobiographical genre, its textualization through the system of comics and their relevance for a literature encompassing lesbian issues.

As specific objectives firstly will be presents the philosophical concepts of alienation and reification, secondly will be analyzed and traced the differences between the mass communication, cultural industry and internet. Thirdly will be presented the Kantian concept of enlightenment as antonym of alienation and reification studied here, after that, this investigation progresses to specific alienation strategies and democratization of the mass communication. Finally, will be realized the reflection regarding three scopes that bring us different ways to evaluate whether cultural industry and internet are clarifying or alienating the masses. Evidently this is a thematic dissertation that passes by several authors and texts, mainly on the internet are cited several extreme contemporary authors, but as a fundamental core have the following books: Dialectic of Enlightenment by Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer published in 1947, What is cultural industry by Teixeira Coelho published in 1980 and Critical Theory Cultural Industry by Rodrigo Duarte published in 2003.

En dépit d'une formulation simple et concise, l'article 1134, alinéa 3 du Code civil a fait l'objet, au cours de ces dernières années, de vibrantes controverses. De confusions en déformations, la bonne foi avait acquis une portée distendue, déstabilisatrice de la force obligatoire de l'engagement. Son épuration s'est donc imposée, laissant transparaître une notion contenue, rivée à une fonction déterminée, le contrôle du comportement contractuel. Garante de la prévisibilité, la bonne foi intervient pour sécuriser le cadre relationnel de la convention. En transmutant la défiance en confiance, cette disposition exprime la reconnaissance renouvelée de J'acte d'adhésion à une loi que les parties ont librement créée. Cela a justifié de repenser le socle de la puissance obligatoire de l'engagement, à travers un nouveau principe fondateur, l'alliance. Il en résulte que la méconnaissance de la bonne foi est appréciée objectivement au regard de la confiance légitime induite chez les partenaires contractuels. Redéfinie, la bonne foi découvre un contenu juridique déterminé, et des manifestations catégorisables, là où la casuistique semblait triompher. L'analyse de son régime a par ailleurs permis d'en découvrir les variations. Parce que toutes les conventions n'ont pas la même vigueur, les fluctuations de l'article 1134, alinéa 3 ont été mesurées à l'aune de son seul critère d'appréciation, la confiance légitime. Une autre clé a tenu à la théorisation des sanctions applicables à la bonne foi, achevant ainsi son retour dans le contrat. Restituée dans son essence profonde, cette nonne juridique retrouve sa voie, celle de la juste mesureDespite having a simple and concise formulation, Article 1134, paragraph 3, of the Civil Code has been the subject of great controversy in recent years. Via confusion and distortion, good faith gained a distended scope, destabilizing the binding commitment. A refinement of the concept was therefore required. It reveals a contained notion, bound to a specific function : the control of contractual behavior. In reality, good faith acts to secure the relational/interpersonal frame of the contract. Transforming mistrust into trust, this provision reflects the renewed recognition of the bond to a law that the parties have freely created. This justified the reconsideration of the basis of the mandatory power of commitment by virtue of a new founding principle : the alliance. The breach of good faith is then objectively assessed in the light of legitimate expectations generated by the alliance. Invigorated, good faith uncovers a specific legal content, and its events are categorized where before casuistry seemed to triumph. The analysis of the good faith regime has likewise helped to discover its variations. Owing to the fact that not all conventions share the same strength, the fluctuations of article 1134, paragraph 3, are measured according to their sole evaluation criterion, that being legitimate expectations. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)In the present study, two medicinal plants were investigated for their organic constituents. Plant samples were extracted and purified by chromatographic separation using a combination of methods. Each compound isolated was characterized by spectroscopic and physical data. A number of new chemical structures were found.
The investigation has led to the isolation and structural elucidation of fourteen pure compounds from an ethanol extract prepared from the dried rhizomes of Alisa orientale, including three types of skeletons: protostane triterpene, guaiane sesquiterpene and phytosterol. They were identified to be beta-sitosterol (1), (17S)-3, 11-dioxo-23-nor protost-12-en-23 (17)-olide (2), alisol B 23-acetate (3), alismol ( 4), alismoxide (5), alisol B (6), alisol A (7), 25-O-methylalisol A (8), 25-anhydroalisol A 24-acetate (9), 25-anhydroalisol A (10), alisol E 23-acetate (11), daucosterol 6'-stearate (12), (20R, 23S, 24R)-23, 24, 25-trihydroxy-2, 3-seco protost-13 (17)-en-3-oic acid 2, 11beta-lactone (13), and 13beta, 17beta-epoxyalisol A (14). Among them, compound 2 was a new naturally occurring skeleton of 23-nor protostane triterpene, and compound 13 a new 2, 3-seco-protostane triterpene.
