Abstract:

Fonda, Nick. "The fantastic worlds of Alistair Macleod and Michel Tremblay." Mémoire, Université de Sherbrooke, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/11143/10913.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston University.
The Custom of the Country: Alistair Cooke and Race in America is a selected, annotated edition of 142 installments of Alistair Cooke's BBC broadcast, Letter from America, on race and the struggle for civil rights in the United States. Alistair Cooke (1908-2004), English-born American journalist, produced a variety of works over a seventy-year career, almost all about American politics, society, and culture. Besides writing numerous books, he was for 25 years American correspondent for the Manchester Guardian newspaper (later The Guardian). From 1946 to 2004 he wrote and recorded a weekly 2,100-word commentary, Letter from America, broadcast to the United Kingdom and British Commonwealth - a total of 2,869 broadcasts. Over the decades, the relation of white and black was a frequent concern of Letter from America. The Custom of the Country records events from Harry Truman's efforts to advance civil rights, through the Brown v. Board of Education decision, battles over segregation and passage of civil rights laws, the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., the riots of the 1960s, school busing and Affirmative Action, up to and beyond the O.J. Simpson case. The letters include profiles of such figures as Joe Louis, George Wallace, Lyndon Johnson, Duke Ellington, Marian Anderson, J. William Fulbright, and Jesse Jackson. They explore changes in the language of race and in black and white society. The texts also reveal the process of change (and lack of change) in the views of one immigrant over more than half a century. The Custom of the Country is an accurate edition of scripts as near as possible to the words as Cooke wrote and spoke them. The edition, spanning the years 1946-2003, was compiled from manuscripts and transcripts in the Alistair Cooke collection at the Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center at Boston University, and at the BBC Written Archives Centre in Reading, England. Available versions were consulted and compared in the preparation of the text. In addition to the introduction, which contains specific references to the texts, footnotes report key variant readings, along with historical and biographical background, as well as extensive cross-referencing of topics and events.

Selby, Sharon Dawn. "Myth, memory, and narrative : (re)inventing the self in Canadian fiction." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/6318.

Abstract:
In this dissertation, I examine how the themes of memory, storytelling, and the construction of narrative identity develop in the works of Canadian authors Alistair MacLeod, Michael Ondaatje, and Jane Urquhart. As a means of delving more deeply into these themes, I focus on the specific narrative strategies that all three writers employ in the expression of the relationship between the individual and his/her community, as well as between physical and psychological realities. For the narrative voices in these authors’ works—given the different ways they envision and encode communal identity as constitutive of subjectivity—the past is inextricably embedded in the present. As they construct and record unfolding experience, a wider cultural history is written over with personal connections and significance. In the works of each of these authors, the act of telling stories (re)shapes people and events for the audience: speakers reform and reconstitute their experiences, allowing them both to rewrite the past and be haunted by it. Storytelling becomes an existential act in which personal landscapes are invested with structures of feeling that transcend local significance yet are manifested in everyday connections between ordinary people, and in daily (often unrecognized) struggles and acts of heroism. This includes a study of the means through which psychological evolution and trauma can be depicted. I also discuss how stylistic techniques such as fragmentation, repetition, self-reflexivity, and literary allusion function within these narratives. This aspect of my investigation provides the opportunity to engage more fully with the body of literary research that has already been produced on these authors.

Russell, Edward J. N. "The role of secular discourse in theological anthropology and the doctrine of sin : a comparative study of Alistair McFadyen and Karl Barth." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/13541.

Full text
Abstract:
Contemporary theology increasingly is concerned with 'inter-disciplinary dialogue'. There has, however, been little work done on the under-girding structures of such a dialogue. The central concern of this thesis is to explore the methodological foundations for the relation between 'theology' and 'secular discourse'. Although there are many possibilities for testing the relation between theology and secular discourse, theological anthropology and the doctrine of sin are used as the primary testing grounds because they are central to the concerns of much contemporary systematic theology as well as being areas to which the secular world has much to contribute. Alistair McFadyen's and Karl Barth's work in these areas is adopted as the particular focus of the thesis. Together their work offers a rich environment for analysing the methodological issues at stake in the relationship between theology and secular discourse. The primary aim of the thesis is to offer an approach to interdisciplinary dialogue which maintains 'the priority of God' in theological method whilst recognising that engagement with secular discourse enables theology 'to do its job better'. Drawing from McFadyen's and Barth's work in theological anthropology and the doctrine of sin, some methodological foundations for structuring the relation between theology and secular discourse are laid out and stated in a more widely applicable form.

Rowe, Peter Anthony. "The roles of the cathedral in the modern English Church." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/1859.

Full text
Abstract:
A cathedral of the Church of England is the seat of the bishop and a centre of worship and mission. The history of this institution is followed from the English Reformation, which it survived, through to the Commonwealth, which it did not. Restored on the return of the monarchy, it then survived with little further trouble until the nineteenth century, when a lot of its income was diverted to the provision of churches and ministers for the populous urban and industrialised areas, which the Church could not fund in any other way. It was the subject of investigation by two Royal Commissions in the nineteenth century and three church-inspired commissions in the twentieth. These commissions stressed the links that should exist between cathedral, bishop and diocese, which the nineteenth century diocesan revival also encouraged, and suggested changes in instruments of governance to achieve this. Some proposals came to nothing, but others were brought into law. Unlike the Roman Catholic cathedral, the Anglican one never lost its autonomy. The religious situation in Britain today is considered in the light of some contemporary sociology and psychology, and it is recognised that the continued decline in the fortunes of the Church is tied up with the massive subjective turn which characterises contemporary culture. The cathedral has not shared the mistrust which faces the Church, and its various roles are discussed in the light of its continued hold on public affection. The conclusions reached are that, although the cathedral now has strong links with bishop and diocese, it should retain its independence within relationships of interdependence with them, to enable it to harness the popularity which it enjoys to remain a centre of worship, but primarily to concentrate on being a centre of mission. Appropriate ways of achieving that are discussed.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to explore how the concept of sin, guilt and responsibility can be used in the contemporary discourse of the climate catastrophe. In a comparative textual study on Sallie McFague’s A New Climate for Theology and Richard Bauckham’s Bible and Ecology these concepts are analyzed. The conclusion is that McFague and Bauckham both uses “responsibility” frequently, but neither “sin” or “guilt” are well used in there works. Yet, when they reflect on “sin”, both of them abandons the (in the western theology classical) Augustine theology on sin. McFague when she argues that “evil” is a perversion of good rather than a consequence of an external reality, Bauckham when he claims that the fall of sin is an ongoing process rather than a momentary event.   Hannah Arendt and Alistair McFadyen are used as an interpretative and theoretical background to the conclusions of McFague and Bauckham in the discussion that follows the comparative textual study. Arendt and McFadyen reflects on sin, guilt and responsibility with the Holocaust as context. In the discussion, their thoughts on the Holocaust are essayed to apply on the contemporary climate catastrophe. Hannah Arendt talks about “collective responsibility” and “personal guilt”, concepts that in the discussion part, when applied on the climate catastrophe and in a better way fits the contemporary situation, inverts to “collective guilt” and “personal responsibility”. The talk of collective guilt tangent the Augustine teaching of original sin where sin is a common heritage from the fall of sin. McFadyen uses original sin to explain the mechanism of the German people during the Holocaust which in many ways are similar to the processes of the climate catastrophe of today.    In the discussion of this study, original sin is used as a model to better understand the fact that people cannot escape guilt in the contemporary situation and to comprehend why people act as they do. The study intends accordingly to in a constructive way contribute with new perspectives on sin, guild and responsibility to the ecological theology of today.

Abstract:
Western Europe Functionalism ideas are born of the need for scientific and technological progress in producing new materials and building technologies.  Today energy efficiency has become one of the most important characteristics of any project, where functionalism reflects well-designed building components. Reducing energy consumption, improving energy efficiency and minimizing greenhouse emission in the building is vital for the planet's survival. This study intends to provide expertise in design and construction disciplines to use the idea concept of Fallingwater and Villa Savoye, functionalist-style buildings, from the golden era of functionalism. This evaluation can help a new generation of designers and architects to improve the passive energy efficiency and daylight of studied concepts, pragmatic and organic. As a case study, the authors simulated and evaluated the energy efficiency of two conventional architecture designs stated above. Energy efficiency and daylight simulation of these functionalist-style buildings were executed using the BIM-based Building Energy Simulation (BES) tool. The indoor temperature variation and the amount of illuminance for each zone were assessed. The result indicates that the main temperature variation (mean air and operative temperature) in both buildings is not suitable for living and some parts of the regularly occupied floor receive too much direct sunlight. Based on the results, some passive energy-saving measures such as improving building orientation, material and shape, window wall ratio (WWR), adding external shading device, window position, and size are suggested to help researchers in the AEC industry in the future reforming process.

Goard, Brian Lee. "THEOLOGY AND REALITY: CRITICAL REALISM IN THE THOUGHT OF ALISTER E. MCGRATH." Diss., 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10392/3727.

Full text
Abstract:
Brian Lee Goard, Ph.D. The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2011 Chairperson: Dr. Gregg R. Allison This dissertation examines the role of critical realism in the theological method of Alister E. McGrath. The thesis of the dissertation is that Alister McGrath uses critical realism in a way that strengthens his theological method and that serves a number of good theological ends, yet McGrath's methodology is in need of revision in some areas, and clarification in others, if it is going to be theologically acceptable. Chapter 1 introduces (1) the philosophy of critical realism, (2) Alister McGrath's work in theological method, and (3) the thesis and methodology of the dissertation. Chapter 2 examines the history and development of critical realism, beginning with the work of Roy Wood Sellars in the early twentieth century and concluding with a description of critical realism as developed by Roy Bhaskar. Chapter 2 argues that historically, critical realism has been a versatile method that can be applied to a variety of projects and disciplines. Chapter 3 delineates the main themes of McGrath's methodology and how critical realism affects those areas. Specific points addressed in this chapter include McGrath's prolonged engagement with other theological methodologies (chief among them being postliberalism), the concept of nature, natural theology, and the science-theology dialogue. Chapter 4 provides a critical evaluation of McGrath's use of critical realism. A number of positive conclusions about McGrath's use of critical realism are drawn, yet where McGrath has made problematic or underdeveloped applications of critical realism, both correction and suggestions for further development are offered. Finally, chapter 5 reviews the thesis of the dissertation and considers the method that has been taken in defense of that thesis. Specifically, it demonstrates how each of the previous chapters serve as evidence for the dissertation's thesis.

Alistair, Phillips. "A method for replacing serrated tussock (Nassella trichotoma) with kangaroo grass (Themeda triandra) in lowland native grassland remnants." 1999. http://eprints.vu.edu.au/218/1/Alistair%2C_Phillips.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
A 'spray and hay' method was developed which replaces the noxious weed serrated tussock (Nassella trichotoma (Nees) Arech.) with indigenous kangaroo grass (Themeda triandra Forrsk.) in partly disturbed remnants of western (basalt) plains indigenous grassland, a community listed as vulnerable to extinction. Investigations were carried out on Melbourne's north-west urban fringe. Refinements of the 'spray and hay' method resulted in low densities of other weeds amongst the newly established T. triandra swards. First steps in the method involved removal of weeds by slashing and follow-up treatment with either of the herbicides, glyphosate (as Monsanto Roundup®) or atrazine (as Nufarm Nutrazine®). These steps resulted in close to 100% kill of mature N. trichotoma plants. Greater than 98% replacement of N. trichotoma with T. triandra was achieved by thatching over herbicide-treated plots with seed-bearing T. triandra hay harvested from remnant grasslands and then removal of the hay several months later by either burning or physical removal. The type and timing of herbicide application, thatching and removal of thatch were found to be central for successfully establishing competitive densities of T. triandra seedlings and minimizing re-establishment of N. trichotoma and other weed seedlings. A treatment set involving: slashing weed biomass in summer (January), herbicide application in autumn (April) followed by thatching with seed-bearing T. triandra hay in winter (July) and removal of thatch in spring (October) produced the best results. Assessing the seed content of hay and germinability of seed prior to revegetation were also important for calculating the amount of hay laid and subsequent seedling densities established. The seed content and germinability of seed-bearing hay was found to vary markedly in samples harvested in three different years, across discrete remnant grassland sites and even within undisturbed grassland sites. Reasons for the success of the method, and why other variations are less successful are discussed, as is the wider application of the method for weed control and replacement with indigenous grasses in lowland grassland remnants.

Holman, Alistair Milton. "Benefits of improved performance monitoring of mine cooling systems / Alistair Milton Holman." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/11038.

Full text
Abstract:
Mine cooling system components are an integral part of a mine‟s ventilation system. A mine‟s reliance on these capital intensive components are set to increase as mines deepen. Mine cooling systems consume up to a quarter of the electricity used on mines. Component efficiency should be monitored to ensure optimum utilisation. Downtime should be minimised so that production is not negatively influenced. Replacing expensive components in an age of severe economic pressure should be avoided altogether. In this study, the performance of mine cooling system components was monitored. The effects of various operational and maintenance interventions on component performance have been quantified. Quantifying the effects of management decisions led to the refining of operational procedures, the optimisation of future maintenance, and the subsequent identification of electrical energy savings potential without the need for expensive modifications. Investigations show that a mine could realise a saving of up to nine hundred thousand rand annually by optimising the maintenance schedule of chillers. Extrapolated results estimate an electrical energy saving of 52 127 MWh per year if the strategy were implemented on twenty of South Africa‟s biggest mines. In addition, a monetary saving in excess of five hundred thousand rand could be saved through refining operational procedures. These strategies will be possible without the need for expensive installations or complicated modifications. Monitoring cooling system performance allows management to identify trends in performance, to understand component inter-dependence, and to allow for informed decision-making. In addition, performance monitoring allows for the identification of component and instrumentation faults. Statistical control charts and simulation modelling are some of the tools that have been employed in this study. These tools assist management formulate strategies and decisions with a higher degree of confidence.

Abstract:
This thesis maintains that different forms of media influence the social epistemologies of the two main protagonists of Alistair Macleod's No Great Mischief and Margaret Laurence's The Diviners. Macleod's Alexander MacDonald and Laurence's Morag Gunn seek an historical context in which to locate themselves, and their ancestral stories help to form the underpinnings of their individual identities, but also challenge each protagonist to re-mediate these experiences through the lens of the more advanced modes of communication that are available in the late twentieth century. The transition from orality to literacy and beyond also has a profound effect on the protagonists' conceptualization of home and nation. The work of a number of media theorists, including Benedict Anderson, Roland Barthes, Walter Benjamin, Stanley Cavell, Ronald Deibert, and Walter Ong, provide the basis for an analytical framework in which to locate these works. David Williams' criticism of media influences in a number of Canadian works opens a space for the discussion of how these theorists address the ontological complexities of the interweaving of media and narrative. This reading of the two novels contends that, although Diviners (1974) is earlier than Mischief (1999) in terms of publication, it is actually Laurence's novel that takes the more postmodern approach in its hybridity of form, as well as its social content. while Alexander, wittingly or not, is implicated in "museumizing" his oral Gaelic culture by committing it to print, Morag moves through oral tales to photography and into a far more fluid "past-present" that is well served by her innovative "Memorybank Movies." Moreover, the multimedia techniques that characterize Morag's narrative anticipate hypertext and create an epistemology of a plural, hybrid nation that leaves a living legacy for Morag's Metis daughter Pique and affirms a plural, overlapping collage of identities that is truly representative of Canada's multicultural nature.

The present study, carried out by the teacher-researcher in 2010/2011 in one of her 7th grade English classes, aimed at the promotion of negotiation and self-directed language education, in opposition to a reproductive pedagogy. In order to respond to the students‟ needs and interests and harmonise the requirements of the system with the promotion of self-direction, a hybrid pedagogical approach was used. The “normal” lessons, directed by the teacher to accomplish the syllabus, were interspersed with self-directed lessons based on the negotiation of objectives, contents and ways of learning the language. The aims of the study were (1) to know the representations and perceptions of the students about the English learning experience; (2) to understand the teacher‟s and students‟ role in pedagogical negotiation in a self-directed environment; (3) to identify potentialities and constraints associated to pedagogical negotiation in a self-directed environment. It was a (self)supervision study within a naturalistic research paradigm. The research techniques were mainly qualitative and had both pedagogical and research purposes: questionnaires, students‟ Learning Route, pedagogical interaction analysis (videotaped and transcribed) and the teacherresearcher‟ s notebook. As an action-research methodology, its purpose was the understanding and transformation of action in a particular context. The experiment results show that the negotiation of meaning and decisions fostered students‟ awareness about their actual state of knowledge and developed their capacity of learning how to learn. By having an active role in their learning process, students became co-constructors of the curriculumin- action in a collective process which changed significantly the way of learning and teaching a foreign language. The hybrid approach was validated by the participants and turned out to be a re(ide)alistic alternative to more traditional approaches, closer to our ideal: a pedagogy for autonomy in school education, in this case in foreign language education.

Herbert, Alistair Ian. "Utilization of heat from a nuclear high temperature cooled modulator reactor in a crude oil refinery : techno-economic feasibility analysis / Alistair Ian Herbert." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/13335.

Abstract:
This research project will investigate the potential business case and technical feasibility of using nuclear generated heat in a crude oil refinery located some distance away. The key design element is an energy transportation mechanism that doesn’t compromise the safety, licensing or operability of the nuclear plant. In a crude oil refinery processing heat is generated by combusting fuels that are generally sellable products. The inherent safety features and high output temperature of a HTGR make it an appropriate replacement heat source for such a processing plant. An opportunity thus exists to replace the refinery hydrocarbon fuel usage with nuclear energy thereby improving refinery profitability. Three alternate proposed were generated. Alt 1: Generation of steam at HTGR, piped to the refinery to replace current supply. Alt 2: Closed loop reversible methanation reaction delivering potential chemical energy to the refinery which is released to the process in heat exchangers. Alt 3: Hydrogen production from water splitting at the HTGR, piped to the refinery and combusted in boilers or used for hydrotreating diesel. Utilizing data from refinery plant historian and journals, a basic engineering study assessed technical feasibility thereof. An economic model for the 2 most promising alternates was set up using quotations and factored data and evaluated against the existing refinery situation. A consistently increasing crude price was assumed. Alternates 1, 2 and 3 proved technically feasible and delivered 86 MW, 59 MW and 48MW to the refinery respectively. Generating steam at the HTGR (Alt 1) demonstrated an attractive business case, strengthened by co-locating the nuclear plant at the refinery. It is therefore concluded that using a HTGR for process heat in a petrochemical plant such as a refinery is techno-economically practical and demands further consideration. If future carbon emission legislation is promulgated this proposal will be key component of the solution.
