Abstract:
Authorized by a convention of all Sikh parties, Master Tara Singh, with four other Sikh leaders, met Jawaharlal Nehru on 24 October 1955. Maulana Azad and G.B. Pant were also present. The talks were ‘friendly but rather vague’. On 8 February 1956, a plan, generally known as the Regional Formula, was discussed by the Sikh leaders. In his address to the All-India Akali Conference on 11 February, Master Tara Singh dwelt on Punjabi Suba as the real solution for the Punjab problem. But the Akali Dal accepted the Regional Formula in March 1956. Furthermore, the Akali Dal Working Committee resolved in September 1956 to implement the Formula. The constitution of the Akali Dal was suitably amended and the Akali legislators joined the Congress party.

Abstract:
Malaya achieved independence on 31 August 1957 with a minimalist bill of rights. The main local pressure for the bill of rights came from the Malayan Indian Congress, which was supported in its demand by the majority Malay and Chinese political parties under the umbrella of the Alliance Party. The decision to include a bill of rights in the Malayan independence constitution was made by the Reid commission. The influences on the Malayan bill of rights were primarily Asian; the rights in the constitutions of India, Pakistan, Ceylon, and Burma all figured prominently. The Reid commission conceived the bill of rights as the central feature of a fundamentally non-communal constitution. However, as the majority Malays favoured special rights for Malays in a communal state, they opposed the commission's scheme to safeguard the minority Chinese and Indian communities.

Grewal, J. S. At the Simla Conference and in the General Elections. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199467099.003.0012.

Abstract:
On Lord Wavell’s initiative, the Simla Conference was held to discuss the proposal of a new executive council and a new constitution for India after the war. Master Tara Singh represented the Sikh community at the Simla Conference. The Conference failed due to Jinnah’s insistence that the Muslim League alone had the right to nominate Muslim representatives on the Executive Council. The failure of the Conference made the general elections of 1945–6 all the more important. The general elections resulted in a large degree of polarization between the Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs. The Muslim League got Muslim mandate in favour of Pakistan. The Congress got a mandate of Hindus and a considerable proportion of the Sikhs for independence without partition. The Akalis got support of the large majority of the Sikhs for an independent political entity of the Sikhs. This polarization was of crucial importance for the future.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the current nationalist thought in Assam and discourse on Bangladeshi migrants in the state. Assam which is known as a miniature of India, due to its ethnic diversity, has ongoing conflicts between the Bengali Muslims and various other ethnic groups. The formation of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), the Bengali Muslims’ party in Assam has increased the tension between Bengali Muslims, ethnic communities, and the Hindu nationalists in Assam. This chapter examines the consequences of these recent developments. The interviews with the AIUDF senior leader, representative from the Bengali Muslim community and Assam’s separatist group ULFA, the Hindu and ethnic nationalists, Congress MLA and the civil society members reveal the complex nature of migration from Bangladesh into Assam.

Abstract:
In the 1940s, the issues of immigration, land, and identity gained an urgency that had never been witnessed before. Under the different ministries led by Syed Muhammad Saadulla, immigration of Muslim peasants from East Bengal received a new impetus from the 1930s onwards, and the issue of land became a contentious one. Following the All India Muslim League’s Lahore Resolution of 1940, the issue of immigration acquired grave political overtones and became inextricably linked with the question of land and the identity of the indigenous Assamese and tribal populations. The details from the Assam Legislative Assembly debates reveal the diametrically opposite positions held by the Indian National Congress and the Muslim League on immigration, land, and identity. During this time the question of identity came to occupy a central place, and an attempt to do away with administrative measures such as the Line System created a highly explosive situation in the state.
