Abstract:
In this conversation, Kevin K. Kumashiro shares his reflections on challenges to publishing anti-oppressive research in educational journals. He then invites eight current and former editors of leading educational research journals—William F. Pinar, Elizabeth Graue, Carl A. Grant, Maenette K. P. Benham, Ronald H. Heck, James Joseph Scheurich, Allan Luke, and Carmen Luke — to critique and expand on his analysis. Kumashiro begins the conversation by describing his own experiences submitting manuscripts to educational research journals and receiving comments by anonymous reviewers and journal editors. He suggests three ways to rethink the collaborative potential of the peer-review process: as constructive, as multilensed, and as situated. The eight current and former editors of leading educational research journals then critique and expand Kumashiro's analysis. Kumashiro concludes the conversation with additional reflections on barriers and contradictions involved in advancing anti-oppressive educational research in educational journals.

Recently, “natural” disasters have dominated the airwaves; mega-catastrophes that claim more than 1,000 lives have become an almost yearly occurrence. In 2010, the Haiti and Chile earthquakes killed more than 200,000 people between them and felt all too familiar to many observers in the West. Before them were Cyclone Nargis in Burma, which took 130,000 lives in 2008; Hurricane Katrina, which killed more than 1,500 New Orleans residents and left 80% of the city flooded in 2005; and the Indian Ocean tsunami, which claimed roughly a quarter of a million lives in India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Thailand in 2004.

Andrews, Robert. "‘Master in the Art of Holy Living’: The Sanctity of William Stevens." Studies in Church History 47 (2011): 307–17. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/s0424208400001042.

Full text
Abstract:
The following paper explores the sanctity of the late eighteenth-century High Church Anglican layman, William Stevens (1732—1807), as seen through the eyes of his biographer, Sir James Allan Park (1763–1838). A largely unstudied figure, Stevens, a prosperous London hosier who dedicated most of his adult life to philanthropic, theological and ecclesiastical concerns, arguably represents one of the most important figures within pre-Tractarian High Churchmanship. Park was a close friend of Stevens. A judge of the Common Pleas and a founding member of Stevens’s ‘Club of Nobody’s Friends’, Park shared Stevens’s interest in theology and church-related concerns, even publishing in 1804 a short discourse directed towards young people, on the need for a frequent reception of Holy Communion. In focus here is a facet of Stevens’s life that came to be closely associated with his many achievements as a lay divine and activist within the pre-Tractarian Church of England, namely, his personal sanctity; this was marked by a close connection between faith and works, a strict dedication and devotion to the Church of England’s services and sacraments, and a rejection of’enthusiasm’ in its pejorative sense — all of which he held while maintaining a strong sense of cheerfulness and zeal. A portrait of sanctity that conforms to what is known about pre-Tractarian spirituality, the Memoirs may additionally be viewed as offering a representative understanding of what constituted holiness for this Anglican tradition.

Abstract:
On June 9, 1860, the publishing firm of Irving P. Beadle and Company announced in the New York Daily Tribune the publication of their first dime novel, Ann S. Stephens's Malaeska: The Indian Wife of the White Hunter. The narrative was advertised as “the best story of the day,” and its writer as “the star of American authors.” Stephens, whose name is familiar today only to scholars of the dime novel, was indeed well known to the reading public around the mid-19th Century. She was on the editorial board of several magazines, including the illustrious Graham's Magazine. She had published her own journal, Mrs. Stephens Illustrated New Monthly. And she wrote for a plethora of popular magazines, among others the Columbian Lady's and Gentleman's Magazine, the Ladies' Wreath, Frank Leslie's Ladies' Gazette of Fashion, and Peterson's Magazine. Her 1854 urban melodrama Fashion and Famine had to be printed three times during the first month of publication to satisfy the demand of the public, and eventlually sold a record eighty thousand copies. Her historical novels, generally of European setting, were so successful that they were systematically printed in book form by the Philadelphia publisher T. B. Peterson after they had appeared serially in Charles J. Peterson's literary monthly. And Stephens had the sanction of the critics as well as the public: already in 1848 the American Literary Magazine had eulogized her by stating that “of the numerous female writers of our country, Mrs. Stephens is deservedly classed among the first.” Charles J. Peterson had declared in the pages of Graham's Magazine that “no writer, since Sir Walter Scott, had excelled her in … power of description.” And even Edgar Allan Poe had acknowledged that Stephens could “seize adroitly on salient incidents and present them with vividness to the eye,” was “not unskillful in delineation of character,” and could, in conclusion, be granted “the effervescence of high talent, if not exactly of genius.”

Abstract:
The history of chemical sensitivity in America is reviewed from the first description published by Edgar Allan Poe in 1839, to its first medical definition as a symptom of neurasthenia in 1869, its rediscovery as allergic toxemia in 1945, its redefinition in 1987 as multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS), and its overlap in the 1990s with chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia syndrome, and Gulf War syndrome (GWS). More than half of the over 500 peer-reviewed articles on MCS support an organic basis for MCS, whereas less than one-quarter support a psychiatric basis. The same 2:1 difference is seen in the numbers of MCS researchers writing these articles and the number of journals publishing them. A psychogenic interpretation of MCS also is specifically rejected in the latest formal position statement on the subject, a 1994 consensus of the American Lung Association, American Medical Association (AMA), U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA), and U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (US CPSC) (U.S. Government Printing Office 1994–523–217/81322). This and other government recognition of MCS in policy, research, and scientific conferences are summarized. Dozens of federal, state, and local authorities accept MCS as a legitimate disease and/or disability that deserves reasonable accommodation in housing, employment, and public facilities. Official recognition is expected later in 1999 when the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announces a formal definition of MCS and the federal Interagency Workgroup on MCS releases its long-awaited final report, 4 years in the making. Given that epidemiological data from three states puts the prevalence of chemical sensitivity at 16 to 33% of the general population, 2 to 6% of whom have already been diagnosed with MCS, this truly is a hidden epidemic that deserves the priority attention of public health researchers and policy makers. Industrial toxicologists are encouraged to work on reducing and eliminating the use of synthetic fragrances, chemical sensitizers, and other irritants in consumer products and occupational settings.
