Abstract:
AbstractWith polling and municipal level data, we analyse the determinants of Salvador Allende's presidential election victory in 1970 and the change in political and electoral support for his government (1970–3). Support for Allende is explained by ideology more than by social class, socio-demographic variables or the economic performance of the country. Allende won in 1970 as an opposition candidate when the outgoing Frei administration enjoyed high approval and the country was experiencing favourable economic conditions. In 1973, when Allende had 49.7% approval, ideology remained the strongest determinant of presidential approval. Economic variables and social class are less important in explaining electoral support for Allende and for his Popular Unity coalition.

Abstract:
The article is dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the death of Salvador Allende, the President of Chile, who was the first in the world to attempt to move towards socialism by peaceful means, within the framework of a representative democracy. The article explains the reasons of the failure of Chilean "socialist project". The reader will learn how Salvador Allende's last message to the Chilean people was putting on a journalist's tape recorder on “Radio Magallanes” from La Moneda Palace, besieged by the putschists on the day of the military coup on September 11, 1973. The author managed to keep this tape recording during those dramatic days in Santiago. That last Allende’s call to the nation became his political testament.

The oral sources collected among the persons who were inside La Moneda Palace during the coup against Salvador Allende's government, on 11th September 1973, facilitate the study of historiographical problems such as the resistance from inside the palace, with the participation of the president himself, and the question of the armed defence of the popular government, in the circumstances of Allende's death. The thesis of the homicide is dismissed, and two different versions of the suicide proposed, that open the way to a series of considerations about how the Concertación reconstructed the figure of Allende.

Abstract:
In Chile, how citizens and political leaders have understood, incorporated, and contested the relationship between the familial and the political has been central to the development of their society. The author examines the ideological influence that familial beliefs had on the process of delegitimizing the presidency of Salvador Allende and legitimizing the military coup through an analysis of political rhetoric surrounding the mobilization of women in the March of the Empty Pots and Pans. The author argues that the march was a pivotal moment in which generalized beliefs about the state’s responsibility for familial welfare, including protecting men’s and women’s familial roles, were transformed into a powerful critique against Allende and his government. The author shows how the arguments put forward by Allende’s opponents drew on embedded beliefs about the relationship between families and politics to frame the emerging debate about the political legitimacy of President Allende.

Abstract:
Isabel Allende’s novel The House of the Spirits stands as a significant work within feminist literature, offering a profound exploration of gender, power dynamics, and societal norms within the context of Chilean society. Through the intertwining stories of Clara, Blanca, and Alba, Allende navigates themes of female agency, resilience, and resistance against patriarchal constraints. This paper examines the feminist interpretations of The House of the Spirits, delving into the portrayal of female characters, the narrative structure, and the novel’s engagement with feminist discourse. By analyzing the historical and cultural context, character dynamics, and thematic richness of the novel, we uncover the ways in which Allende challenges traditional gender roles and amplifies the voices of women within the literary landscape.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract The chemical composition of an unusual xenolith (All-AF) from the Allende meteorite was determined by neutron activation and x-ray fluorescence analyses. The xenolith is similar in bulk composition to Allende, but has large excesses in some moderately volatile trace elements, such as Na, K, Au, Sb etc. Some of these elements show considerable variations in other components of Allende, suggesting inhomogeneous distribution in Allende. However, elements of higher volatility, such as Zn and Se have concentrations typical of bulk Allende and other type 3 carbonaceous chondrites. Therefore, All-AF must have formed from the same reservoir as bulk Allende.All-AF has uniform grain size and does not, and did never, contain chondrules. The low content of volatile elements, therefore cannot be ascribed to loss of volatiles during the chondrule forming process. It is a characteristic of the Allende reservoir. The chemical composition of related dark inclusions (DIs) in Allende is different from All-AF. Dark inclusions may have formed by separation of fine grained material in the early solar nebula while All-AF resembles bulk Allende material that was never subject to chondrule formation. Both, dark inclusions and All-AF have oxygen isotopic compositions which plot at the upper end of the δ18O vs. δ17O correlation, suggesting extensive oxygen exchange with ambient gas.

Abstract:
Abstract Ru, Os, and Ir in Allende whole rock and coarse grained CAIs are present in amounts up to 80% in phases other than inert Pt-metal alloys. Selective chemical dissolution was used to dissolve sulfides by ascorbic acid-H2O2 and metal (NiFe)-silicate-oxides by HF/HCl. Carbon-rich, spinel-chromite residues were left from the demineralization procedures and scavenged inert material such as Pt-metal alloy particles. The Pt-metal contents in sulfide phases from the Allende whole rock sample and the total Pt-metal contents of the CAI samples give near-cosmic to cosmic interelement ratios. Pt-metal ratios in all the other separated phases are fractionated. The Fe/Co ratio in the carbon-rich residue from the CAI and in the sulfide fractions from Allende whole rock and CAI-bulk samples is 230, the same as is reported for sulfides in the Zelda fremdlinge. A scheme for mixing aggregates from different regions of “Allende-space” in the solar nebula is proposed to account for the Pt-metal and Fe-Co distributions observed here.Chemical alteration processes in condensed material may have required moderate to high temperatures in the nebula to have caused the interelement relationships observed. We determined the final equilibration temperatures to which components of Allende were subjected. Temperatures are based on the distribution of Hg between labile (low T) and retentive (high T) sites in silicate rocks. Compositionally and texturally different CAI clasts and the matrix associated with one of the clasts were equilibrated at 778-975 °C. The averaged thermal equilibration temperature for seven bulk (matrix) Allende samples reported previously was 670 °C. The final thermal equilibrations of the clasts probably occurred before Allende was assembled.

Abstract:
Abstract In the history of Latin American social medicine, numerous works have presented a harmonious link between Rudolf Virchow, Max Westenhöfer, and Salvador Allende, which establishes the origin of ideas of Latin American social medicine in a prestigious European source, represented by Virchow. A key to that story is that Allende was a student of Westenhöfer, a disciple of Virchow who lived in Chile three times (1908-1911, 1929-1932, and 1948-1957). Based on primary sources and contextual data, this article problematizes the relationship between Allende and Westenhöfer, and questions the influence of Virchow in Chilean social medicine.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Both authors employ magical realism to delve into social and political issues, albeit in distinct ways. García Márquez’s intricate narratives critique power structures and societal decay, while Allende’s intimate stories focus on personal relationships and resilience. Despite their differences, both writers share a commitment to using literature as a tool for social critique and cultural exploration.

Abstract:
This article presents a history of ‘Project Cybersyn’, an early computer network developed in Chile during the socialist presidency of Salvador Allende (1970–1973) to regulate the growing social property area and manage the transition of Chile's economy from capitalism to socialism. Under the guidance of British cybernetician Stafford Beer, often lauded as the ‘father of management cybernetics’, an interdisciplinary Chilean team designed cybernetic models of factories within the nationalised sector and created a network for the rapid transmission of economic data between the government and the factory floor. The article describes the construction of this unorthodox system, examines how its structure reflected the socialist ideology of the Allende government, and documents the contributions of this technology to the Allende administration.

Abstract:
