[Truncated abstract] The last few decades have witnessed an increase in the prevalence, morbidity and economic burden associated with asthma and allergic disease. This rising incidence cannot be completely explained by changes in genetic factors or by improvements in diagnostic procedures. Environmental factors, particularly those associated with a westernised lifestyle, are considered to be involved in this increase. In the late 1980’s Strachan was the first to link environmental factors with allergic disease, this theory became to be known as the ‘hygiene hypothesis’. This hypothesis links

This thesis is designed to explore the hypothesis that settled dust in a domestic environment can contain significant levels of allergens and that common cleaning methods employed to remove dust can result in sufficient airborne exposure to potentially trigger an allergic reaction. Qualitative feedback from respondents in studies of furniture dusting habits indicated that household furniture dusting could elicit an allergic response. Abstract:
Increased disturbance from agriculture and the changing climate in the Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) of North Dakota may cause shifts in vegetation on wetland systems as well as increases in spider mite populations on soybeans. Part of this study focuses on wetlands functioning at the highest ecological state, or reference condition. Wetland plants serve as a good indicator for assessing wetland condition. The past and present Floristic Quality Index scores at each wetland site were significantly different (p < 0.05), indicating that vegetation at reference wetlands have declined in condition.

The prevalence of asthma has increased over the last generation, in parallel with a warm indoor microclimate. Central heating, fitted carpets and tight building construction have improved standards of heating and energy efficiency in homes, at the expense of ventilation.
