Full textThis study deals with microstructural, structural, chemical and mechanical properties of two predominantly based dental alloys (Co-Cr, Colado CC® and Ni-Cr, Colado NC®). Cast alloys are characterized to analyze microstructure, structure, composition stability, hardness and elastic modulus. Solidification path was determined and microsegregation has been characterized. Influence of recasting has next been studied. Five times recasted alloys in different amounts were processed (0, 25, 50 and 75% of new alloy). It was demonstrated that the examined alloys are characterized by a dendritic microstructure with a large grain size, typical of the cast materials. No notable degenerative changes in microstructure were observed. Al2O3 particles were characterized on Ni-Cr alloy. Occurrence of porosities significantly increase in recast samples but remains clinically acceptable. Alloys demonstrated great compositional stability after 5 recasts. A significant decrease in Vickers hardness values appeared in the fourth recast in both alloys. Alloys showed no significant variation in term of modulus of elasticity, although a slight tendency decrease was observed. The main phase encountered is a face centered cubic solid solution. Secondary phases were identified. Number of recasting demonstrated to have negligible effect on phase identification and on solidification path

Full textMetallic coatings (composition: Ni-23Cr-7A1 and Ni-22Co-23Cr-7Al, weight %, thickness = micrometers) containing Y, Hf or Zr (content: 0 to 2 %) have been deposited by two-target triod sputtering on substrates having similar compositions but without these elements. Oxidation tests at 1100°C (duration: 100 h for isothermal and up to 1000 one-hour cycles for cyclic tests) have shown that: - the addition of Y, Hf or Zr increases the oxidation kinetics of these alloys;- yttrium is more efficient for improving the adhesion of the alumina scales in thermal cyclic conditions, than hafnium or zirconium. According to the observations and analyses (by SEM, XRD, EDS, EPMA) Y, Hf and Zr are present as YAl03, Y3Al5 O12, HfO2 or ZrO2 in the Al2 O3 scale. The microstructure (pores, grain sizes, precipitates) of NiCoCrAl alloys, containing or not Y, has been determined by TEM. Residual stresses in the alumina scale and the alloy have been measured by XRD. The results obtained suggest that the addition of Y, Hf or Zr changes the growth mechanisms in the alumina scale: these elements contained in the alumina increase the oxygen diffusion rate towards the alloy, and new oxides form the scale/alloy interface with less important growth stresses

Full textThe aim of this work is to determine some enthalpies of formation, and phase equilibria in prospective Sn and Bi based lead-free solders alloyed with transition metals (Ni, Co) often used as substrates in the electronics. Numerous calorimetric experiments were done, using Setaram–Calvet 800C and Gachon apparatus. Other techniques as DSC, DTA, EMPA, and X-ray diffraction were largely applied. The CALPHAD method was used for the optimization of the Co-Sn phase diagram. Co-Sn. Direct reaction calorimetry was used to determine of the compounds Co3Sn2, CoSn, CoSn2 and CoSn3 at 1287, 1033, 629 and 605 K, and of the liquid phase at 1010 and 1303 K. Drop solution calorimetry was used for measuring of the liquid phase at 991 and 1020 K. The existence of a temperature dependence of the Co–Sn enthalpy of mixing was confirmed. The willingness of the system Co-Sn to form metastable phases is confirmed. The transition temperatures between the respective low and high-temperature forms of Co3Sn2 and CoSn3 were verified by DTA. Ni–Sn. Of Ni–Sn compounds (Ni3Sn_HT, Ni3Sn_LT, Ni3Sn2_HT, Ni3Sn2_LT and Ni3Sn4) were measured by direct reaction calorimetry at 1332, 943, 1288, 728 and 846 K. No thermochemical information is available in the literature for the latter two compounds. The transition temperature and enthalpy between low and high-temperature forms of Ni3Sn2 were verified by DTA. Ni–Sn–Bi. Phase equilibria in Ni–Sn–Bi were studied at 733, 773, 903 and 1273 K and isothermal sections were constructed. A formerly unknown ternary compound with approximate formula Ni6Sn2Bi was found. Measurements of were done at 733 and 1273 K (solid phases); at 833, 873 and 933 K (liquid phases)

Full textNi-Co alloys are used in shielding of leading edge of helicopter blades, due to their good corrosion and wear resistance, mechanical strength and magnetic properties. These binary alloys form a solid solution with a face-centered cubic structure when the cobalt content is less than about 70 %. The study materials Ni, Ni-20Co and Ni-50Co were produced by fusion, before undergoing cold rolling deformation, and annealing at 850 °C. They are characterized by a microstructure with a grain size between 5 and 14 µm, a high fraction of Σ3 boundaries, a low stress state and an absence of texture. The observation of the microstructural evolution during annealing made it possible to determine the kinetics of recrystallization and to identify the Cube texture as a limiting factor. The electroformed, nanocrystalline industrial alloy Ni-20Co was also examined, and its grain size was increased to resemble the model material. Corrosion properties were studied in two electrolytes (30 g/L NaCl and 0.5 M H2SO4) to determine the impact of composition and microstructural parameters on corrosion resistance and passivation mechanisms. Potentiodynamic polarization curves showed the passive character of nickel rich samples, and revealed the detrimental influence of cobalt. However, a composition similar to that of the industrial alloy does not significantly degrade the corrosion performance. A high density of grain boundaries, a large fraction of twin boundaries, or a (111) orientation, are identified as beneficial microstructural parameters for corrosion resistance. A higher susceptibility to pitting, due to Cl- ions, is observed for the industrial alloy, certainly related to the electroforming process. Finally, the model materials exhibit an active-passive behaviour, typical of nickel alloys in an acidic medium. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and Mott-Schottky tests enable to characterize the electrochemical and semiconductor properties of the passive layers. The different results seem to converge towards a less efficient passivity linked to an increasing fraction of cobalt in solid solution
