Abstract:
In Italy's bank-oriented financial system, bank credit is the most important source of external finance for firms. The allocative efficiency of banks is therefore a critical element underlying the overall performance of the economy. This chapter focuses on credit allocation across industrial sectors with different growth opportunities, as revealed by stock market data. We constructed a unique database which includes annual data on bank credit to different sectors and data on listed firms from 1948 to 2009. We assume that average sectoral price/earnings ratios are a proxy for growth opportuniti

A dynamic production environment can be characterized as one where current production decisions impact future production possibilities. Consequently, th

Abstract:
This article summarizes leading critiques of law and economics. These critiques are grouped into three categories. The article first addresses concerns about the normative value of economic efficiency as a leading goal for law. It then addresses methodological criticisms, which often call into question the coherence of the allocative efficiency concept. Finally, it discusses the interpretive criticisms of law and microeconomics, which view law and economics as a rhetorical form and raises questions based on that view. Scholars have questioned the normative value of economic efficiency as a cen

Abstract:
The success or failure of economic assistance programs is a shared responsibility of recipient countries and donors. The negative attitude about aid prevalent today underscores a perception the aid has failed. Critics often blame corrupt regimes, weak governments, or poor economic policies. However, the poor track record of aid is also due to donors' inability to allocate limited funds effectively and poor coordination of their aid efforts. Declining aid budgets have led to fundamental questioning of foreign aid's allocation and utility, while the apparent ineffectiveness of aid has shrunk aid
