"Food web dynamics in open and closed systems." Doctoral thesis, Umeå University, Ecology and Environmental Science, 2004. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-269.
Full textThis thesis is a summary of enclosure and microcosm experiments that aimed to study the impact of allochtonous subsidies on food web dynamics in a heterogeneous food web. In the enclosure studies, a three trophic level littoral food web was used. The food web consisted of two growth forms of primary producers: phytoplankton and periphyton and their associated herbivores: scraping and filtering herbivores. The predator used, YOY perch, affects both pathways in the food web. Manipulation of the openness for the different trophic levels showed that the inflow of phytoplankton and cross-habitat foraging by the herbivore level reinforced the compensatory response between the two growth forms of primary producers
In the microcosm experiment, the response of an herbivore food web and a microbial community to inflow of resources and food web configuration was studied, using a model food web. The model food web consisted of two forms of primary producers, i.e. phytoplankton and periphyton, and two herbivores, i.e. Daphnia pulex feeding on phytoplankton, and Chydorus sphaericus feeding on both periphyton and phytoplankton. Three different food web configurations, all having the phytoplankton and periphyton, but either one of the herbivores, or both, were set up. The flow regimes consisted of an open treatment receiving a constant supply of phytoplankton, and a closed treatment with an initial resource pool. The effect of the inflow of phytoplankton was affected by the food web configuration. In the presence of D. pulex, the inflow of phytoplankton was made accessible to periphyton, and indirectly to C. sphaericus, which increased to such high densities that D. pulex was negatively affected. The inflow of phytoplankton had an indirect negative effect on the microbial community, since the biomass of herbivores increased, which imposed a higher grazing pressure on all parts of the microbial community.

Full textIn the early 2000s, Quebec regions had a surge in uranium exploration after the substantial increase of the uranium prices in the markets. These uranium exploration projects were confronted with growing citizens and politics mobilizations who questioned the industry expertise and the government capacity to protect the public interests and the environment. Based on the advocacy coalition framework, this thesis seeks to explain the Quebec government’s decision to suspend the certificates of authorization (in other words, to impose an administrative moratorium) in the uranium industry even though the most advanced project, the Matoush Project, received all the administrative authorization. By studying and comparing the mobilized coalitions on this issue and their influence on the successive governments, this research should bring a new light on neglected elements of analysis from the advocacy coalition framework.

Full textSalt-bearing passive margin with large clastic sediment supply are characterized by gravity-driven tectonics that deforms the sedimentary overburden and the underlying salt. These deformations are controlled along the continental rise by the differential loading generated by the deposition of turbidite fan (gravity spreading). Locally, along mature margin, extrusion of evaporites form allochthonous salt nappes (tens kilometres long) that are remobilized and deformed by the deposition of turbiditic lobes. Two end-members are recognized: the stepped counterregional structural style, which is dominated by subsidence of the sedimentary cover and distal salt extrusion. The roho structural style, which is dominated by lateral translation accommodated by several extensional structures. We designed a completely new kind of experimental apparatus for studying the interaction between sedimentation and salt tectonics along passive margin. Our device combines two approaches that are traditionally distinct: (1) the stratigraphic approach aiming to simulate sediment transport and deposition, and (2) the tectonic approach focusing on the deformation of the salt and its sedimentary cover. Thus, the tectono-stratigraphic basin built during this PhD work allows the modelling of turbiditic transport and deposition processes, as well as, salt-related deformations induced by differential loading of a mobile salt substratum at regional (gravity spreading) or local (allochthonous salt bodies remobilization)

Full textMontpellier Botanical Garden, which is the oldest one in France, played an important part in the introduction of exotic plants during the XVlII th and XIXth centuries. Antoine Gouan (1733-1821), Auguste Broussonet ( 1761-1807), Augustin-Pyrarnus de Candolle ( 1778-1841), Alire Raffeneau-Delile ( 1773-1850) and Charles Martins ( 1806-1889), ran the Garden in turn during this period and ail attempted to introduce new plants. Their practice of plants transplantation went hand in hand with theoretical questionings about the concepts of acclimatization and naturalization. Each director held his own scientific views on these matters, that is why we need to detail the evolution of practices and views about acclimatization and naturalization in Montpellier Botanical Garden, from the middle of the XVllI th until the end of the XIX th century. Each of these botanists' vision and practice were under the influence of four causes: the economic interests at stake, the part played by scientific theories, each director's style and personality, as well as the principles of the institution, in this case the essential function of the botanical garden. When they introduced plants, the Garden directors' practice certainly showed a remarkable continuity during the period which stretches from 1771 to 1880, yet their theories on classification, botanical geography, heredity of acquired characters and the transformation of species were entirely different

Full textIn the last decades of the twentieth century, the Americas experienced an undeniable resurgence of indigenous peoples. At the political level, that revival brought to the forefront the demands for autonomy through which Indigenous peoples sought to establish a fairer framework of relationships with the state. This dissertation examines how two federations – polities that, according to some scholars, embody the principles of federalism as combination of shared and autonomous government – respond to the demands of indigenous autonomy. Thus, based on the observation that institutional adaptation of Canadian and Mexican federations has been insufficient to meet the autonomic aspirations of Indigenous peoples, the dissertation addresses a normative exploration on the restoration of Indigenous self-government and reconciliation of Indigenous and state sovereignty through federalism.

Full textThis master thesis is constructed around the notion of territory and what the latter represents for the Kanak of New-Caledonia. As the Indigenous people of the archipelago, the Kanak are intimately linked to the land they occupy which thus becomes the primary underpinning of the group’s identity and history. The social organization, the rhythm of life as well as the indigenous representations are mostly derived from the manifold relationship they maintained with the territory. In such configuration, one cannot dissociate a human being from his mound. As a result of colonization and the historical evolution of the archipelago, Kanak society has undergone major transformations at the social, cultural, political and religious levels. However, one has to admit that many of the specific features of their tradition and custom have been preserved, valued and even revised in the course of time. Faced with the current developmental context, the Kanak appropriate for themselves the tools of modernity and try to make their voices heard at the local and national levels, while asserting their identity, their culture and their willingness to deal with the actors of development. The thesis analyzes the relationships and interactions between Indigenous and non- Indigenous people around the management of territory and its resources in the commune of Yaté in southern New-Caledonia. It focuses on the practices and expectations of the Kanak people in relation with the issues raised by the presence of the other groups of actors and interests in the region and by the difficulty to conciliate the conservation and the development of the territory.

Full textThis thesis proposes to investigate the linguistic appropriations and the conceptualizations of language of secondary school students in the town of Bozen-Bolzano in South Tyrol / Alto Adige, as a sociolinguistic and didactic reflection. In this officially multilingual Italian province, which enjoys a status of protection of the German-speaking minority, living together is strongly marked by the separation of schools on an ethnolinguistic basis. The relatively recent presence of transnational migrants calls for a renewed look at the dynamics of identification between "indigenous" and "non-indigeneous" and, more particularly, its implications for education. By giving disposable cameras to secondary school students in the town of Bozen-Bolzano, a city that seems to embody a certain hybridism, with the mission of photographing "the languages of the neighborhood" to create an exhibition, the goal is to investigate the ways young people interpret the plurality that surrounds them

Full textThis research-creation master’s thesis proposes a theoretical and artistic study of collaborative approaches in documentary film. Contemporary issues of the representation of the Other push documentary artists to develop innovative methodologies where power relations between filmmaker—filming equipment—filmed are reconceptualized. The theoretical and creative components of this thesis consider these issues from the perspective of indigenous—non-indigenous dynamics in Mexico and Canada. The first chapter examines the colonial relationships of powers rooted in our contemporary societies and perpetuated in the documentary exercise. The collaborative approach is presented as an option borrowed by several artists, including Roberto Olivares Ruiz and Iphigénie Marcoux-Fortier. Chapter two is devoted to analyzing their work. The ethical and practical considerations studied served the development of the short film Segunda Piel; therefore, chapter three outlines the characteristics of the collaboration and the creative process that have been carried out. Finally, the thesis concludes by measuring the limits and successes of the collaborative documentary approach in regard to the creative process and inherent power relations.

Full textAboriginal peoples are highly resilient to many physical and psychosocial health issues. Intergenerational trauma from past and current colonization is seen as one of the explanations for these difficulties, coupled with a lack of services to address the determinants of well-being involved. To address these challenges, community-based approaches that promote empowerment and self-governance are recommended. Non-Aboriginal stakeholders are involved in supporting community mobilization and their contribution can be substantial. Nevertheless, it seems essential to decolonize interventions, particularly by carrying out an introspection on one's own presence and impact in an indigenous context. In the first part, an ethnographic analysis of my process as a young student-researcher will be carried out and will allow an analysis of the feelings, tensions, questions and reflections that shaped this thesis. Then, the results of phenomenological qualitative analysis of five interviews conducted with non-Inuit stakeholders working in Nunavik or Nunavut will be presented. The analysis of these verbatim will have made it possible to highlight the speaker's considerations in relation to themselves and in relation to the communities, from a decolonial perspective. The inductive qualitative analysis of a focus group conducted with Inuit stakeholders will then be presented, validating some considerations. This study will have supported the importance of self-knowledge and the recognition of invisible privileges of non-aboriginal people in relation to past and current history of colonization, in order to meet the needs of communities as a priority through the establishment of meaningful and lasting trust-based relationships.

Full textCan cultural adaptation of postsecondary programs and services contribute to the cultural empowerment of First Nations students? Can cultural identity act as an academic anchor for aboriginal students within the postsecondary system? Through cultural security and identity rooting concepts, I will demonstrate that the consecration of physical and ideological spaces within the postsecondary education system can contribute to the retention and success of First Nations students. This study draws on the findings of a field study conducted between 2013 and 2015 to which have participated more than 100 Aboriginal students and 15 professionals of various educational bodies, including Projet SEUR’s volet Jeunes autochtones (Université de Montréal), Kiuna Institution, the First Nations Education Council (FNEC), the Aboriginal Resource Center (John Abbott College), the First Peoples' House and the Indigenous Student Alliance (McGill University), the Aboriginal Student Resource Center (Concordia University) and the Wendake’s Centre de développement de la formation et de la main-d'oeuvre (CDFM) huron-wendat. Two distinct formulas will be therefore analyzed: 1. Cultural adaptation of academic services within the post-secondary institution and 2. Cultural adaption of academic programs and services within First Nations' postsecondary institution. This second strategy will be examined through a case study of the collegial Kiuna Institute, conducted among the French cohort of the First Nations Social Program. Results will be presented under the light of those collected in regard to La Macaza’s Manitou College (1973-1976) and American Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCU).
