Abstract:
To many systems of thinking, pharmacology is, by definition, not alternative medicine. However, many alternative treatments, such as the use of herbal compounds or illicit drugs to help PTSD, are outside the scope of standard medicine yet rely on pharmacological mechanisms to support their use. In this chapter, concepts for non-traditional uses of chemical compounds are reviewed. Alternative uses of specific compounds are described. This includes: atypical uses of allopathic compounds, the use of synthetically imitated or isolated natural compounds, the pharmacology of plant-based and herbal medications, and the use of illicit substances which are normally banned in the United States.

Abstract:
An integrative approach to the understanding and treatment of mood, anxiety, and sexual disorders is different from a conventional allopathic approach. Rather than merely identifying and treating symptoms, integrative psychiatry looks at the whole person and provides a unique treatment plan for each person, which might also include psychotropic medications when appropriate. Integrative psychiatry addresses the root causes of the problem, considers all factors that influence an individual’s physical and mental health, and, whenever possible, uses less toxic interventions. Many individuals seek integrative care because the conventional approaches have failed to help them. This chapter provides a road map for treating depression and anxiety from an evidenced-based integrative perspective: micronutrients, fish oil, herbs, amino acids, other treatments such as light therapy, and of course lifestyle changes. The integrative approach to mental health treatment has the added benefit of doing less to disrupt sexual function and more to heal it.

Abstract:
Modern medicine is one of humankind’s greatest achievements. Yet medical errors and irreproducibility in biomedical research suggest something is amiss. Concerns have driven considerable and thoughtful critical analyses, but the apparent intransigence of these problems suggests a different perspective is needed. The perspective pursued in this book begins with the idea that the need for certainty in medical decision-making has been and remains the primary driving force in medical reasoning. Faced with the unique challenges of having to treat the individual patient, the great variety of manifestations across patients is daunting. Either there are as many different “diseases” as there are patients, or there is some economical set of principles and facts that can be combined to explain each patient’s disease. Modern allopathic medicine follows from the presumption that economical sets of principles and facts exist. The challenge is to discover those principles and facts and develop means to reason from them to the individual patient in a way that provides certainty. Medical reasoning implicitly evolved from variations of logical deduction and induction reflected in the hypothetico-deductive, pattern recognition, and intuitive approaches used in medicine today. However, these require the judicious use of logical fallacies that increase utility but at the cost of certainty. Similarly, medical research necessarily requires the judicious use of a variation on syllogistic deduction. Their necessary use creates risks for errors. Many problems in medical reasoning and research are the consequence of injudicious uses. This book is a critical and historical analysis of medical reasoning from this perspective.

Abstract:
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is the most common inflammatory complication and affects approximately 1 % of the global population. It affects three times more women than men. RA is an autoimmune disorder elicited by exposure of genetic factors from the host to unknown antigens causing arthritogenic complaints. It also includes the activation of lymphocytes as well as CD4+ helper T cells along with local release of chronic inflammatory mediators and cytokines like tumor necrosis factor (TNF α) and various cytokines like interleukins (IL) that enormously affect the joints. The available allopathic therapies for RA are not a cure for the complications, and antibody therapy and surgical procedures are expensive. However, in the present era, researchers and healthcare professionals have moved toward natural medicines obtained from plants and other natural sources. Research based on developments in phytomedicine has progressed steadily. Evidence has been collected to show the massive therapeutic potential of medicinal plants used in various traditional systems against many pathological complications. Researchers have focused on the therapeutic potential of natural products used for treatment and counteracting various disorders along with their complications having negligible adverse effects. Natural Products for the Management of Arthritic Disorders compiles current knowledge about the bioactive compounds and herbal formulations useful in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. 11 chapters explain the role of natural products in the management of rheumatoid arthritis. Topics have been contributed by experts in medicinal chemistry and rheumatology. The book first introduces the reader to rheumatoid arthritis before delving into conventional and alternative therapies for the disease. The editors have also included special topics such as the biomarkers for RA, cytokines and anti-inflammatory mediators, preclinical and clinical studies. The range of topics should provide a comprehensive overview of natural remedies for arthritis and the role of natural products in anti-arthritic drug development. The information will be useful for many readers including medical and pharmacology students, multidisciplinary research scholars, scientists, pharma / herbal / food industrialists, and policy makers.
