This article addresses the issue of low targeting efficiency of the Russian child allowance programme. We look at non-take-up of eligible households and inclusion of the non-eligible, and show that household characteristics are significant determinants of the programme take-up, as they affect households' earning potential and expected level of benefit. We believe that the results of the research give useful suggestions on how targeting of child allowances can be improved in Russia.

AbstractAny system of pig production affects the welfare of the pig. Most systems meet some of the requirements of the pig. For example, well managed intensive systems provide shelter, regulated temperature and ventilation, clean lying areas and adequate nutrition. However other aspects of the pig's requirements may be neglected such as provision of space to explore and for play behaviour, the desire to be in family social groups, and material to forage or root in. Pig production cannot exist if it is not economically viable hence commercial reality means pigs cannot be offered everything cons

AbstractOver the past two decades, most Latin American countries have developed cash transfer programmes for poor and low income families not covered by the social security system. These programmes now benefit about 127 million people throughout Latin America and in some countries they include more children than the family allowances of the social insurance system. How have these innovations changed the structure of child benefits in Latin America? This article discusses this issue by looking at the experiences of Argentina, Brazil, and Chile.
