Abstract:
Working from an analysis of illustrated almanacs and other publications by nationalist organizations established in Austria between 1880 and 1918, this study attempts to outline the political culture of the German-national milieu in Austria. It focuses first on the significant landmarks of historical memory which nationalist intellectuals and leaders called attention to and which were highlighted in the political commemorations and the grand historical narratives which they upheld. Our work shows that depending on their degree of radicalization, activists did not regard these landmarks in the same way, and they didn't establish the same hierarchy between them. It also reveals that activists observed rival [czech, solvene or italian] organizations very closely, and that they appropriated their signi cant "realms of memory", albeit with radically different interpretations. This study then attempts to explore how organization leaders sought to make the sentiment of local belonging serve the feeling of national belonging. With this aim in view, the new discipline known as Volkskunde [nationalist ethnology] was perceived as an adequate tool, because it provided a theoretical frame inserting individuals into a series of concentric circles [family, genealogical line, linguistic community, etc.]. This work looks at the collections of small local museums created by local branches of organizations, and at their library catalogues, whose mission was always to make visitors aware of the specificities of their immediate geographical surroundings and to show them how these surroundings were a part of the overall harmony of the great German nation

Abstract:
If popular almanacs are the most sold and read, other kinds are also published in the 18th century, initially and chiefly in Paris. It is a form of publication distinguished by a calendar, the annual term, new year's sales and a very little size. Each one deals with one subject, essentially frivolous poetry, history or science ; but their popular relationship is a discredit for this kind of books. They are often compiled, by rather youg and generally anonymous writers, to earn some money. Many booksellers published one, but only fitty or so are really active ; often, they have joined the trade-company recently and are without family support. Some lasting and profitable almanacs are published by rich printers and handed down from father to son ; but most of them, more precarious, are produced by rather poor booksellers. Most of them have only a yearly tacit permission, and the royal privileges, which assure periodicty and monopole, are eagerly fought for. Almanacs are produced at a low cost, printed in large numbers, sold cheap and rather quickly. The profit is allways interesting, because quickly gained, and can be important for the largest printings. To promote the sale, booksellers make active advertisings and take advantage of new year's gifts, especially with the bookbinding. Other sellers are involved, like "merciers", peddlers, stationers, engravers and bookbinders, who sometimes are themseves publishers. These almanacs are meant for, and sometimes read by, people of middle and upper classes. Some, like directories, diaries and handbooks, are interesting for children and useful for professionnal and practical information. The others assist and reffect spare time activities, especially games and theatre. They follow cultural fashions, and amuse with parody of popular titles. The almanac's production grows fast, its success based on following cultural actuality, including politics after 1789

Legacy, Jessica Lee. "Bodies in the almanac : metaphysical principles in the medieval medical folded almanac." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/31439.

Abstract:
Folded almanacs are fascinating manuscripts that display astrological content relevant to the practice of medicine. However, due to the lack of primary evidence demonstrating the almanac in practice, it is difficult to ascertain their actual use. Medieval Scholars have therefore concentrated on the almanac's sources, materiality and contextual evidence of apparent medical purpose. My thesis examines the metaphysical principles within the folded almanac, which exemplify the micro/macrocosm inherent in medieval astro-medicine. I argue that the folded almanac, as a material object and compilation of medical knowledge, situates the physician, patient and constellations within metaphysical ideas of body, time and space. Using the yet unstudied folded almanac from the National Library of Scotland, Acc 12059.3 (the Borthwick almanac) as a primary model, I demonstrate how this physical object, in dealing with the corporeal body, exhibits the unity of body, time and space. This approach reveals that the folded almanac (1) is a performative object that establishes medical authority, (2) tracks the progress of health and illness using Aristotelian and Thomist concepts of time, (3) maps the intersection of celestial and human bodies onto practical textual spaces. The culmination of these findings illustrates that the folded almanac engaged with a very technical but abstract branch of medieval medicine which sought to explain how, why, when and where illness was manifested, and also operated as an interventional tool for aiding in the restoration of health.

Abstract:
This thesis discusses performative identity in Djuna Barnes' The Ladies Almanack and Nightwood. Barnes' characters create and perform their identities as an attempt to escape or subvert patriarchal norms and societal prejudices. In analyzing the marginalized performative identity categories (race, class, gender, sexuality), one can glean an understanding of the complex social tensions present during Barnes' era, and understand the socially constructed, confining nature of identity itself.

The studies related to the written culture and everyday printed matter have been assuming, systematically, a significant space historiographical production. This research focuses on the Almanack da Parnahyba and the interpretation one can do in its pages in order to identify and understand the speeches and/or representations produced about education in a continuous period of editing from 1924 to 1982, in a total of 58 issues. The theme education was analyzed from two perspectives: education as a civilizing process, and formal and schooling education. The research is based on assumptions of Cultural History, based mainly on the concepts of Chartier, Brotel, Le Goff. Almanack was localized in public and private archives; the immersion in its pages made it possible to build certain aspects of education in Piauí and Parnaíba, unique or common to the rest of the country. One can notice, from the analysis of the periodical, the characteristics of its materiality and circulation, which have enabled to identify its constitution and the spaces in which circulated. It was noted that, during the period studied, this Almanac served, directly or indirectly, as a civilizing manual anchored in a process of urbanist and hygienist modernization. Also, representations were identified, on the part of its collaborators, with regard to formal and instructional education, which provided an analysis of the interrelation of various authors with the current political and educational system. Finally, it is believed that it have been reached the objective of this research when ingraining in the speeches of the collaborators of the Almanack, if not completely, at least to the representations concerning the construction of a civility process and/or systematization on instructional education in Parnaíba and Piauí.

Ridder-Patrick, Janet Harkness. "Astrology in Early Modern Scotland ca. 1560-1726." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/7981.

Abstract:
Over the last generation scholars have demonstrated the fundamental importance of astrology in the early modern European worldview. While detailed studies have been undertaken of England and many areas of continental Europe, the Scottish experience has been almost completely overlooked. This thesis seeks to address that gap in the literature and recover a lost dimension of early modern Scottish intellectual life, one that was central and influential for a considerable period of time. The thesis examines the place of, and perceptions about, astrology in Scotland ca. 1560-1726. It demonstrates that despite well-worn arguments against it on theological, theoretical, moral-psychological and effectiveness grounds, astrology was largely accepted throughout all sectors of Scottish society until at least the final quarter of the seventeenth century. Opportunities to learn about it were widespread after the Reformation. As evidenced by student notebooks, it was taught in all of the universities, whose library contents reflect the subject's importance, and it was readily available to a large proportion of the populace through almanacs and other popular literature. Its uses, too, were widespread and various. Medical practitioners, both qualified and non-qualified, drew on it as a diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic guide and natural philosophers used it to ponder the phenomena and cycles of nature and human chronology. For those involved in negotiating the environment it was an aid to the timing of activities, while individuals interested in predicting future events and conditions could attempt to do so using the rather more suspect judicial astrology. By the last two decades of the seventeenth century, however, astrology was losing credibility among the educated, and the thesis examines and evaluates the factors that contributed to this, which include the ousting of scholasticism from academia by new approaches to understanding the natural world, the increasingly tainted image of the astrologer and the difficulty, if not impossibility, of subjecting astrology to the new experimental methods of the virtuosi.

Abstract:
This dissertation challenges the hegemonic way of visioning old age, and then suggests a creative object, a book, that should enable a new perspective on the theme. Through a theoretical analysis of the concept of old age, as well as other related concepts such as death, time, memory and body, it is understood how the Self is subjectivized under the shadow of God, as viewed in hegemonic thought, and how the opening up to a new configuration of Self stems from the death of God, announced by Nietzsche. Considering the epistemological change observed in the theoretical analysis, and hijacking the perspective of a lesser literature, as suggested by Deleuze and Guattarri in their essay Kafka – For a lesser literature – the book Precariousness Almanac was created. Its intention is to create a buzz in the narrative scene, in order to reveal the deterritorialization of the subjects in it represented, in such a way as not to appease the discomfort of the theme, but to propose escape lines, a method of resistance. The format that was chosen to reach this goal was that of working with a collection of text fragments, the latter of which flirt with the author s death in Barthes, in a tessitura of cut and paste elaborated by the author, at her own risk. An attempt to include the plurality of approaches that the subject suffers in the process of ageing, often paradoxical ones.

Abstract:
The present research is an autobiographical and experimental one made up of narratives in the form of almanack ephemera when I took the adventurous plunge of moving myself among fragmented, disconnected and various experiences in order to nd out which experiences could be seminal for teaching management. Within this perspective, I chose sensitive perspective as the main thread of this doctoral trajectory. Therefore, the thesis is that everyday sensitive experiences, crisscrossed by the imaginary and aesthetics, are elements that should be taken into account when dealing with developing teaching management at a teacher's management course and throughout teachers' professional lives. In order to narrate my personal life history as a teacher, I took as main references the theory of the social imaginary by Cornelius Castoriadis, aesthetics in teaching by Nadja Hermann and life history by Gaston Pineu and Jean-Louis Le Grand. Through these perspectives and within the context of varied experiences, I noticed creation as a narrative under development that needs imagination and spontaneity in order to produce singular experiences and pieces of knowledge. Also, these singularities, which were perceived through the crisscrossings of the imaginary and aesthetics, allowed me to look at research and teaching management under a new perspective, as a place where sensitive creations, autonomous experimenting of reection and re-signing of experimental processes and learning crisscrossed. Finally, within this perspective, the importance of knowledge produced from the crisscrossings of the imaginary, expressed through an asser tive and groundbreaking autobiographical narrative, aesthetics and sensibility becomes explicit not only for Design but for teaching as well since they can generate, among other aspects, the singular perception of subjects and the discovery of new and authentic pieces of knowledge which can become ways of adventure to develop new or different teaching / learning approaches and researches concerning teaching management.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is a comparative study of Djuna Barnes' 1928 book Ladies Almanack and turn of the century sexological texts focusing on Havelock Ellis' studies of 'sexual inversion in women'. The study is based on queer theory concepts from Judith Butler and Fanny Ambjörnson as well as Michel Foucault's studies of the history of sexuality. After a presentation of the theoretical concepts and a short introduction of earlier research on Barnes' works my reading and conclusions are presented in five chapters focusing on different theoretical and thematic aspects of the studied texts. A recapitulation and discussion ends the thesis. In short, my conclusions are that Ladies Almanack contrary to earlier research can be read as a queer text, and a form of counter-discourse to the general one regarding lesbianism in the early 1900's. The text also reveals itself as a pointed critique and a satire of Havelock Ellis' writings on 'sexual inversion in women'. As well, when read against Radclyffe Hall's The Well of Loneliness, perhaps the archetypal 'lesbian novel', Hall's book reveals itself as an echo of the same discourse Barnes opposes.

Abstract:
Hong Kong is searching for an environmental ethic that asks us to live not as mere exploiters and consumers of natural resources, but responsibly and as if we saw the nature, supporting all of our activities and needs, as our home. In the years throughout its history, Hong Kong has struggled to understand the city and the people's relationship with the local environment, hindering efforts to move the city towards a more environmentally viable future. Without a systematic and holistic investigation into the traits, roots, and potentials of this relationship, efforts to salvage the city's worsening environmental conditions will remain scattered and in vain. In Hong Kong, the concept of environmental responsibility is largely absent among the people. The culture, economically driven and characterized primarily by materialistic values, together with a top-down and centralized management of local environmental issues, paves way for individuals to self-sanction their avoidance or disengagement from their responsibilities as moral agents. An exploration of the worldviews -- that is, the beliefs about interactions between the self, the society and the universe -- that predominated in Hong Kong's culture throughout different stages of its environmental history, reveals the root of our predicament as resting on the continuation of societal norms that ignore the necessity of individuals taking responsibility for their environmental attitudes and behaviours. Greater effort should hence be invested in restoring the feeling of personal responsibility for environmental wellbeing as the societal norm. I advocate two courses of action for invigorating a sense of environmental responsibility in Hongkongers. In the short run, drawing on existing research concerning normative social influence and the construction of personal and societal norms, techniques in marketing and advertising, and to some extent propaganda, can encourage behaviour that is more environmentally conscious. In the long run, I suggest we change the way our youth are being educated, about the environment and about ways to value. The local education system and content must be reoriented so that the teaching of environmental knowledge, and the creating of values that support environmental responsibility, are brought to the center stage. The progress toward an environmentally responsible ethic in Hong Kong has remained stagnant for far too long. If there is a time to take action and make a change, that time is now.
published_or_final_version
Philosophy
Master
Master of Philosophy

Abstract:
The aim of my dissertation is a group of scientific Arabic manuscripts. The relationship between them is that they contain the Arabic translations of the Zacut’s Almanach Perpetuum. The fifteenth-century astronomer and astrologer Abraham Zacut composed in Hebrew an almanac entitled Ha-Ḥibbur ha-gadol (The Great Compilation) in Salamanca in 1478, using 1473 as date radix. Jose Vizinho made two eminently practical summaries of this work, which he called the Almanach Perpetuum which first appeared in two different printed editions, both at Leiria (Portugal) in 1496, and each version contains canons, in Latin or Spanish respectively that are followed by a set of Latin astronomical tables. Zacut’s work was soon translated into Arabic, and until now several manuscripts of the Arabic translations as well as of various Arabic commentaries on this work could be identified. The first Arabic version from the Zacut’s almanac was made in the East by Mūsā Jālīnūs in 1505-06 and de the second, in the Maghreb by al-Ḥajarī. Mūsā Jālīnūs’s version is preserved in a single manuscript (nº 966 in the Library of El Escorial) containing two sets of canons. The second translation into Arabic is by Aḥmad ben Qasim al-Ḥajarī al-Andalusī (made around 1630) and it is preserved in five manuscripts. His translation reached a wide readership from the 17th until 19th centuries. The main objective of my research has been, based on selected manuscripts, to produce an edition of the Arabic translation of Zacut’s Almanach Perpetuum. This involved a) to produce a critical edition of the canons in the Arabic version of the Almanach; b) to edit the headings of the astronomical tables, in their Latin and Arabic forms, and to subject them to a comparative study; c) to analyze the numerous marginal notes in the Arabic manuscripts, as the provide important evidence for establishing a stemma of the manuscripts. This would then serve as the starting point for d) a detailed linguistic comparison of the manuscripts and an analysis of the differing astronomical parameters and procedures used in the different copies. Finally, based on the above finds, e) diffusion of the Almanach Perpetuum in the Muslim world from the 16th century onwards, where the text had acquired noticeable popularity among astronomers and astrologers alike, could be traced.

The Industrial Revolution brought about a significant evolution in machinery and it also created a new working class. Not only men could be seen in the workplace, but also women took an important role working outside their homes. That insertion of women in workforce had a great influence in women’s clothing, considering that they needed to promote freedom of movement in the work activities. Industrial Revolution also led to an exceptional change in fashion and people’s way of life beginning in England and in France and was spread all over the world. The ‘Almanach de Pelotas’ was an almanac circulating in the city of Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in the beginning of the 20th century and it was chosen as demonstration of the changes in fashion and also in Pelotas’ society lifestyle. It was chosen among some options because of its considerable circulation in the city which allowed us to observe more the evolution of those changes in the city. The purpose of this study is to observe people’s everyday social practices, in other words, Pelotas citizens’ lifestyle represented in the ‘Almanach de Pelotas’ through some selected advertisements pertinent to the research topics. We used a qualitative method of study directed to the most publicized products, the graphic styles or movements which influenced their constitution as an almanac specially related to the advertisements and the way those ads portrayed the way of life and the development of the society and its lifestyle. The ‘Almanach de Pelotas’ using its claims (from commercial establishments, banks, factories and industries), its articles, its photographs and images - showing the changes that took place in the city (in bridges, streets, squares, educational institutes , theaters) - was intended to show the progress of Pelotas, a city that worked well in its construction and that knew how to project. The most popular products were fastacting remedies that could cure any kind of disease and were used in many claims as a way of consumer manipulation through testimonials from patients who were cured with their efficacy.

Abstract:
Eskinita and Other Poems Eskinita and Other Poems is a collection of poems and sequences with Manila as its context and the city walker as its key figure. An eskinita - a Tagalog diminution of the Spanish word esquina, which means "corner" - is a term used to refer to sidestreet so narrow that even a car would find it hard to maneuver there; an eskinita that leads to a dead end, moreover, is called an interior. Grounded in, yet taking flight from, the language and imagery of Manila, the manuscript draws on the city's history and its present moment as it juxtaposes personal experiences and scholarly sources to portray a city whose development - considered in works like Nick Joaquin's Manila, My Manila, Manuel Caoili's The Origins of Metropolitan Manila, and Robert Reed's Colonial Manila - is bound up with political, social, economic, and postcolonial structures. Through this space goes the city walker, a figure considered in literary and theoretical texts like Walter Benjamin's study on the flâneur, Michel de Certeau's analysis of walking, and psychogeographic writings of the Situationists. The poems are concerned with formal strategies that take their cues from Anglo-American Modernism - collages of texts in lyric and prose, serial structures, and line splicings - and aim to express the complex experience of walking in Manila, of writing Manila: juxtapositions and interpenetrations between interior and exterior, scholarly and demotic language, past and present. The long poem Eskinita extends the use of these devices: apart from prose and verse combinations, it incorporates quotation, parataxis, and photography. Although the overt aim is to offer, using the aesthetic resources of poetry, multiple and refracted views of Manila, Eskinita nevertheless endeavours to express - by constraining words, lines, and page layout - a sense of containment and limit. By counterpointing multiple textual and visual modes - and including various sources and formal devices - Eskinita and Other Poems explores and sometimes rejoices in the tensions between polyphonic and disjunctive elements, and the way their structures generate resonance and dialogue between unlikely familiars. Form, Historiography, and Nation in Nick Joaquin's Almanac for Manileños This thesis argues that the Almanac - when contextualised within the long-standing tradition of the almanac genre, and examined using the theoretical underpinnings of Mikhail Bakhtin's notion of heteroglossia, Walter Benjamin's views of fragmentary historiography, and intertwining aspects of literary form and nation formation - expresses the multiple, not singular, temporalities that constitute and complicate the Filipino nation. Produced in 1979, during Martial Law in the Philippines, the Almanac's formal strategy - demonstrated by the accommodation of discrepant genres, compression and correspondence in the calendars, and fragmentation in the essays - is a kind of non-linear historical emplotment. Such an aesthetic - derived in part from Modernism - is distinct from, and critically interrogates, fixed and linear articulations of national history. The focus of the analysis is a reading of the Almanac's calendars and essays. The distinctions and interactions between these subgenres result in a text that is both cohesive and stratified: calendrical entries which are comprised of national and religious elements and have past and future orientations inhabit the same space as temporally disjunctive essays. Despite fragmentation, the Almanac is nevertheless held together by correspondences and associations. The Almanac's oblique and tangential strategy of representing Philippine history - when seen in the light of the obsolescence of a now-moribund but then-vital genre - critiques linear historiography. By accommodating accounts of missed chances and foregrounding seemingly irrelevant details, Joaquin's Almanac interrogates historical narratives which, in the name of progress, fail to incorporate materials that are aberrant and inconsequential.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is twofold. Firstly, we propose a definition of the Contes lyonnais and we give the reason why its authors were interested in the regional dialect of Lyon. Thus, the Contes lyonnais were stories composed by the literate class originating from Lyon’s political and cultural circle, following their precursor Nizier du Puitspelu. They were published mainly by the Société des Amis de Guignol during the first half of the 20th century in the Almanachs des Amis de Guignol and were written in the regional French of Lyon. They tell facetious stories of the Lyon silk workers life and they were intended to those who heartily care about Lyon's culture. The authors of the Contes lyonnais were born in their great majority in Lyon’s region. Their parents had worked in Lyon’s silk industries and some of them even tasted its flavour themselves. Their involvement in the building of the “lyonnitude” and their stubbornness demonstrates that their interest in the regional dialect of Lyon was lead by their love for Lyon. Secondly, we give a phonetic, morphosyntaxtic and lexical analysis of the Contes lyonnais. It demonstrates that two mains traits characterize their grammar : a popular aspect and a regional one. As much as the phonetics are rich in popular archaisms, the morphosyntax abounds in regional archaisms. Nonetheless, we notice a very slight proportion of regional traits that are uniquely Lyonnais. To the opposite, the vocabulary is mainly made up of regional words that are found only in the francoprovencal domain or in Lyon

The research is about the almanac in collection. The almanac is a popular information and communi-cation document written for many years as a source of information in the cities and rural areas of the country. In the specific case of this study, it is an object of collection, where it presents itself as an infocommunicational device of social, historical and cultural value. The collection of the almanacs studied belongs to the Carneiro Rezende`s family and, it was inaugurated by the collector José Carneiro de Rezende in the first decades of the 20th century. The research aims to represent the alma-nac within a particular collection that covers the period between 1906 through 2014. Through on dif-ferent appropriations and uses, all the collectors, users, readers and keepers made from the collection, giving to the almanac a documentary character of information and a popular written communication. Nowadays, the collection is under custody of Hamilton Carneiro. He is an advertiser and propagator of popular culture in Goias state. To realize the study that was made a descriptive and exploratory re-search that involved the use of quantitative and qualitative data collection techniques – descriptive analysis and interviews. To support the ideas of the research, it was necessary increase knowledge about the following concepts: almanac; popular written communication; popular culture; reading; col-lection and document. The descriptive analysis took 55 titles and 241 copies of almanacs that form the collection from 1906 to 2014. A bibliographic typology of the almanacs were developed from the analysis, taking into account the period, language, illustrative material, present authors and publishers. A thematic classification of the almanacs created with the most relevant themes in the context’s col-lection, and were identified reading vestigial and uses around it. Also the family network of readers was presented. The study allowed the representation of the almanac as an informational document of the popular culture written in the context from a particular collection. Through the descriptive analysis and interviews, it was possible to verify the formation interests of the collection and the uses attributed to the almanacs, demonstrating the documentary-informational relevance, especially in the field during the first half of the 20th century. When the almanac has just represented one of the only sources of information printed to reach readers in the rural area. The use from the almanacs by the collector, readers, users and guardians was made by the study and was verified an important documental-informational paper of the written popular culture, and presents as displays like a device of approach and dialogue between different forms of languages, writings and knowledges. For that reason, it was concluded that the appropriations and uses of the family network`s readers of the almanacs collection were characterized as an informational document of the popular written communication. Also, it was presented besides the infocommunicational, the social, historical and cultural values, registered in this document, their relevance approach to the education and pragmatic instruction that come from the popular life.

As a source and object of resource, the Almanac connects to the history of books and reading in Brazil, contributing to knowledge about the distribution of printed, forming circles of readings and networks of readers, making even the stimulus for writing for different paths. Combining format, content and language of greater access, these forms have contributed to the formation and expansion of the readership, promoting cultural exchanges in different areas of the provinces, between points in Brazil, Portugal and other countries. Like editorial spaces of experimentation, the Almanacs gradually incorporated the changes promoted by technical innovations, new content and tested ways of telling, keeping always linked to social and cultural needs of timekeeping. The Almanac is also seen reading, prescribing, promoting the book, linking the printed circuits.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the almanac Der Familienfreund - katholische haus kalender und wegweiser (The Family Friend - Catholic Almanac and Guide), which was produced and published in Rio Grande do Sul between 1912 and 1956. With almost all its editions in German, this almanac was published by Tipografia do Centro and was designed by Hugo Metzler. Its idealization involved the Catholic Church, more specifically the Jesuits. The study adopts the theoretical assumptions of Cultural History and History of Written Culture, assuming Roger Chartier’s studies. Thirty eight almanac editions and other relevant material were analyzed. To help the analysis, interviews with two readers of the almanac and with people who had contact with it or with other printed material in German were carried out. From that, oral documents were produced. The empirical corpus analysis aimed to understand the almanac’s contexts of production and circulation, as well as its uses. With this objective, the analysis attempted to comprehend the utilization of this material, the textual and typographical devices, the reading protocols, and especially the images and editorial choices. It was noticed that editorial marks of this genre strongly characterized this almanac. Religious and various other themes were present in this material. The importance of the almanac to its community of readers could be noticed in the interviews, as well as in its circulation in the countryside, especially around Arroio do Meio, Rio Grande do Sul. The acquisition of the almanac through a payroll loan in trading houses or at schools could be claimed, as well as the circulation among religious authorities. The religious influence and its similarity to almanacs published in Germany could be noticed. The reading protocols in the cover of some editions were reinforced in the interviews, emphasizing the reading was shared among all the family. In this sense, the idea of being an almanac to the whole family prevailed, since there was no inappropriate content for children. It was observed that there was a relation between the almanac and what the members of the Catholic community considered "bad" and "good" reading. In addition to the religious feature, the almanac Der Familienfreund fulfilled its function of offering instructive readings and it was an ethnocultural cohesion instrument in the German-Catholics communities, also spreading information. This thesis highlights the importance of the studied genre and the value of Der Familienfreund almanac in its circulation area: the almanac was a mean of information and entertainment, with a moralizing feature and the intention to unite and inform the German-Catholic community, since it was one of the few reading options at that time.

Abstract:
This paper presents a description of the history of German immigration to the central region of Rio Grande do Sul. This is the initial study that has the sequence showing the development of German-language printed and its attempt to preserve the history of this nation. To illustrate this attempt to preserve, it are analyzed in this work, the five stories of Hilda Siri, published in the almanac Serra Post Kalender between the years 1952 and 1956. This almanac was chosen because it marks the time when circulated (1922 1960) and the author presents relevant texts in the years when she published in this almanac, focusing in large part on remembering. This work is divided into four chapters, respectively, the history of immigration, of the theories on memory and history, the press in German journalism in Southern Brazil and literary analysis of the stories by Hilda Siri. In this analysis the points are seen as historic and that are relevant to the development of these texts.
Abstract:
The dissertation investigates narrative strategies employed by the contemporary American novel to criticize and counteract the dynamics of domination. The study focuses primarily on Charles Johnson's Middle Passage (1990), Richard Powers's The Time of Our Singing (2003), and Leslie Marmon Silko's Almanac of the Dead (1991). These three novels address problems of sociopolitical repression and racial discrimination arising from the preconditions and heritage of colonial rule and the enslavement of Native Americans and African-Americans. While Johnson, Powers, and Silko refer to concrete historical moments, the critique implicit in their novels does not primarily arise from narrated historical facts or fictional experience, but from the narrative configurations they construct, and in which they embed these facts and experiences. They juxtapose naturalized assumptions about fixed meanings of space, temporality, and ensuing notions of self prevailing in the narrated historical past to ever changing combinations of ethnic, cultural, and social belonging within shifting spatial and temporal parameters, until these assumptions become untenable. Their method of exposition is therefore basically dialogic, and the insights that these novels yield constitute a form of knowledge that becomes available precisely through the combination of dialogics and literary narrative. To the degree that previous assumptions still prevail, all three novels provide a critique of the foundations on which members of Western culture across racial and ethnic lines construct their sense of authority within dynamics of power today. Johnson, Powers, and Silko are associated with African American, mainstream American, and Native American literature, or, in the case of Silko, with the field of American women's writing, and yet, while belonging in these subfields of American studies, go beyond and indeed defy such institutional categories in the conceptual reach of their work. Their novels participate
L'étude se concentre principalement sur Middle Passage de Charles Johnson (1990), The Time of Our Singing (2003) de Richard Powers et Almanac of the Dead (1991) de Leslie Marmon Silko. Abstract:
Aiming at a general problematization of the encounter between the educational and the literary practices, this dissertation offers a story in a speculative manner about certain existing forms of governing the writing forces. To do so, this study investigates the public figure of the man of letters, taking it as the catalyzer of the precepts related to a supposed good writing, which presumably the pedagogy would transmit it, prescribe it and disseminate it for a population of effective readers and virtual writers. Based on the analytical contribution of Michel Foucault, this work specially makes use of the author-function and society of discourse notions in order to question the governmentalized assaults invested in the act of writing, which would allow and spread the act of writing within veridictive limits, as well as would distribute it across a few chosen persons, reducing its chance of creation. Committed to the Foucauldian procedural gesture, the research seeks to address to its empirical locus in an arche-genealogic mode, forging an analytical approach that could produce a kind of almanac effect on the sources, aiming at minimizing them, avoiding their imperative effects and enhancing their surroundings, in order to comprehend their nomadism, without totalizing them. The empirical surface of this dissertation are the inauguration speeches of the Academia Brasileira de Letras (Brazilian Academy of Letters, or ABL), summing 408 texts in a 117 year span. Given this discursive material, it was intended to fabricate, in a fragmented way and with no chronological pretension, a kind of other history of the Brazilian literature, diminishing its relation to the internal logic of the literary institution while paying attention to its power relations which prevails in its practices, generating effects such exterior as, by first sight, unrelated to them. The intent was not a matter of isolating the precepts of a good writing related to the conditions of a proper scriptural process, such as the use of certain techniques, nor the quantity or quality of the writings, but to foresee the right to belles-lettres, which was granted, it seems, to whom could display a biography taken by fancy or very correct, even if he would write according to the style of Machado de Assis, Paulo Coelho, or even of Adelino Fontoura who just wrote only in private notebooks, found and published only decades after his death and nomination to the ABL. It is possible to assume, from these inauguration speeches, that are three factors that contribute greatly to the governance of the writing, all of them pertaining to the private sphere of the men of letters: a) their interpersonal relationships, especially his family role; b) the places where they were born, living and attending; and c) their public behavior and clothing. Thus, to conclude, the ways of governing the writing, such as this study could understand them, results in a severe restriction of the scriptural gesture, for it has nothing to do with the supposed genius or cleverness, but with forging adequacy and incorporation to the literary milieu or, otherwise, forging a consent to the condition of a restless consumer of cultural productions.

Abstract:
This thesis uses the approaches of the social and cultural history of sciences to analyse the development of the scientific meteorology, in France, from 1830 to 1880. We show that this period sees the emergence of a new regime of scientific practices, giving to meteorology its contemporary identity. One of the essential aspects studied here is the development of forecasting systems, during the 1860's. We use also the case of meteorology to seize some of the generic characteritics of the Science in the 19th century. These characteristics are concerning the observation, the use of numbers, the role of the Public opinion, and the notion of "practical science". Then, we show that these characteristics express themselves in relation with the rise of industry and mass medias
