Pathological and immunohistochemical findings in the skin of an Egyptian goose naturally infected with avian poxvirus are described in this paper. Cutaneous papules and nodules were observed on the unfeathered parts of the skin. Histopathological examination revealed hyperplasia of the epithelial cells of the stratum spinosum, with presence of eosinophilic intracytoplasmic inclusions. Avipoxvirus was detected in the formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissues of goose skin by immunoperoxidase and immunofluorescence. To our knowledge, this could be the first record of avian pox in geese i

Thesis (PhD(Food Sc))--Stellenbosch University, 2014.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: In Southern Africa, the hunting of wildfowl species has increased considerably in the past few years. Crop farmers incur major financial losses due to the feeding activities of Egyptian geese (Alopochen aegyptiacus); consequently a large number of geese are hunted in an attempt to reduce the damage caused. With the current absence of scientific information baseline research investigating the meat quality of this species is essential. The sensory profile of Egyptian goose meat was found to be very distinct in relation t

Includes bibliographical references
Human-wildlife conflicts are increasing globally and are believed to be one of the most prevalent and intractable issues that face conservation biologists today. One such conflict is found on golf courses, where high numbers of geese can come into conflict with residents and members. In South Africa, the indigenous Egyptian Goose Alopochen aegyptiaca population has increased dramatically over recent years and as a result they are often seen as nuisance animals whose population requires active management. Most non-lethal methods of goose control have had
