We present a serially concatenated coding scheme for partial response channels. The encoder consists of an outer irregular LDPC code and an inner matched spectrum trellis code. These codes are shown to offer considerable improvement over the i.i.d. capacity (> 1 dB) of the channel for low rates (approximately 0.1 bits per channel use). There are numerous methods teachers use to teach the alphabet to children. This thesis is a curriculum on how to teach the alphabet to English learners and English speakers. The author teaches kindergarten to students who are English speakers and to students who are Spanish speakers learning English as a second language. The objective of this thesis is to generate a discrete alphabet of low-level robotic controllers rich enough to mimic the actions of high-level users using the robot for a specific task. This alphabet will be built through the analysis of various user data sets in a modified version of the motion description language, MDLe. The Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase (MAPK) pathways are evolutionarily conserved signaling units implicated in the transmission of extracellular cues to intracellular compartments. The ERK, JNK and p38 pathways are the best described MAPK cascades. This dissertation study examined the predictive validity of alphabetic knowledge and phonemic awareness assessments on word reading fluency. The participants were approximately 900 kindergarten students from a suburban school district in Oregon.
