Il saggio ricostruisce le reazioni provocate a Firenze dalla pubblicazione di Le dernier chant du pelerinage d’Harold di Alphonse de Lamartine (1825), ispirato all'opera incompiuta di Lord Byron. Il ritratto dell'assoluta decadenza dell'Italia contemporanea, con la definizione dei suoi abitanti di "polvere d'uomini", indignò gli intellettuali, che avrebbero voluto rispondere nell'Antologia di Vieusseux, il periodico più importante dell'epoca. Pietro Giordani intendeva anche rispondere a Lamartine pubblicando un saggio sulle Operette Morali del giovane (e ancora sconosciuto) Giacomo Leopardi, interpretato come un grande e vivente italiano. La censura ha impedito questa e altre risposte, ma non un aspro riferimento contenuto in un opuscolo dell'esiliiato napoletano Gabriele Pepe. Ferito nell'orgoglio, Lamartine (all'epoca responsabile dell'ambasciata francese a Firenze) sfidò Pepe a duello. La vittoria di Pepe suscitò un grande entusiasmo a Firenze e in tutta Italia. Il tema dell'onore offeso e vendicato con una prova di valore divenne una costante e fu imitato molte altre volte, nella realtà e nella letteratura, alimentando l'immaginazione di diverse generazioni.

The French romantic poet Alphonse de Lamartine traveled to the East—namely, Syria, Palestine, and parts of the Balkans—in 1832–33, with his wife and daughter. His account of these travels, the Voyage en Orient, was published in 1835 and went on to become one of the major Eastern travel-narratives of the nineteenth century. Edward Said was scathing about it in Orientalism: “What remains of the Orient in Lamartine's prose is not very substantial at all … the sites he has visited, the people he has met, the experiences he has had, are reduced to a few echoes in his pompous generalizations” (179). I would not dissent from this assessment. But Said was not the first to remark on the nature of Lamartine's representations of the Orient. In 1859, twenty-four years after the French poet's visit to the East, a young Beiruti poet and journalist, Khalīl al-Khūrī, made an Arabic translation and commentary, with some sharp criticisms, of one of the poems included in Voyage en Orient.

Apres son echec aux elections legislatives du 25 avril 1832, alors que la sante de sa fille julie semble s'ameliorer, lamartine songe qu'il est temps de mettre a execution un voyage en orient tant desire. Il s'embarqua le 10 juillet 1832, et entreprend un long periple dont les etapes les plus importantes furent la grece, le liban, la syrie et la turquie. Il voulait fuir le reel et le quotidien amers. Il est venu voir un orient conforme a son imagination. Le voyage serait la confrontation de la vision lamartinienne du levant avec le reel. Plein d'esperance a son depart pour l'orient, lamartine en revient desespere, mais le mythe oriental connait la survie dans ses diverses publications. Apres son retour en france et jusqu'a son dernier souffle, lamartine sera marque par l'orient. Sa penseen'est plus la meme, ses points de vue sont modifies. Le voyage a genere un etre nouveau

L'objet de notre these est l'etude de l'inversion dans les meditations de lamartine, c'est-a-dire un corpus de sept types d'inversion constituant un total de 1565 occurences. Nous avons d'abord etudie chaque type d'inversion separement et essaye de justifier le choix de cette construction par des parametres grammaticaux, rythmiques et metriques. Ensuite, nous avons considere tout le corpus comme une seule unite, d'une part pour comparer nos resultats a d'autres que nous avons calcules a partir d'autres poetes de trois generations differentes, et d'autre part, pour degager les principes organisationnels dans notre texte (inversions lineaires, inversions imbriquees, inversions independantes, inversions liees).

Cette etude porte sur la description des personnages chez lamartine. Le portrait semble avoir la richesse d'une vie tout entiere, il y a le portrait de l'oeuvre poetique, qui exalte la nature et l'infini. On y trouve egalement celui de l'oeuvre romanesque, qui enveloppe une certaine philosophie. Quant au portrait de l'oeuvre historique, il se situe entre la realite et le reve tout en devoilant le talent et la sensabilite du poete. L'analyse tente de definir les dimensions du portrait qui ne cesse de mettre en valeur la transparence et la profondeur d'une imagination qui reste, pour tous, l'univers et la source de l'oeuvre lamartinienne. L'accent est mis surtout sur les influences que le portrait subit car il devient l'echo d'un ensemble de faits qui ont marque son auteur
The study concerns the description of the caracters in lamartine's works. His caracterisation seems to give the richness of an entire life. In the poetic works, the caracterisation glorifies nature and the infinite. In the romanesque works, the caracterisation express a particular philosophy. As for caracterisation in historical works, it is situated in between reality and dreams, at the same time revealing the talent and sensibility of the poet. The analysis defines the dimensions of caracterisation which plumb the depths of that imagination which is, at the heart, the source and universe of lamartine's works. The accent is on that which influences the caracterisation when it echos a set of facts important to the author

L'histoire de la Turquie de Lamartine rédigée en 1854 est une œuvre considérable par son ampleur (8 volumes), mais aussi par les points de vue parfois prophétiques qu'elle expose sur l'avenir de l’Europe et les relations entre l'orient et l'occident. Notre étude consiste à l'étudier à la fois sous le rapport du fond, mais aussi sous l'angle du style adopté par l'auteur suivant ses différentes approches qu'elles soient proprement historiques ou politiques. La présente thèse adopte un double point de vue : historique et littéraire. Au point de vue historique, nous décrivons aussi bien les raisons d'ordre personnel qui ont amené l'auteur à écrire cette œuvre que les raisons concernant la situation politique de l'époque en particulier de l'évolution de la question d'orient bien que ce terme ne soit jamais mentionné dans cet ouvrage. Au point de vue littéraire nous mettons en lumière les procédés utilisés par l'auteur pour exposer les faits sous le jour qui lui convient et nous avons précisé sa philosophie politique. Nous terminons notre étude en rappelant quel écho a eu son ouvrage devant la critique de l'époque et sa destinée au regard de la postérité
The history of Turkey written by Lamartine in 1854 is not only a significant work with its 8 tomes but may be a prophetic view on Europe’s future and the relationships between the east and the west. Our study does not go only through the essentials points but also goes through the author's style by following his different approaches concerning history and politics. The present thesis has a double point of view: the historic and the literary views. Concerning the historic point of view we are not only describing the author's private considerations to achieve his work but also we are describing the politic situation at the time and more specially the evolution of the "question d’orient the eastern issue" although these words were never named in his book. Concerning the literary point of view we bring up to light the author's methods to state his very own view on the events and we underlined his political philosophy. The conclusion of our study is by reminding the reaction of the critics at the time towards Lamartine’s work and destiny facing posterity

Abstract:
La thèse se présente comme une lecture du Voyage en Orient au miroir de 3 concepts analytiques qui lui donnent à la fois sa forme et sa signification : philosophie, histoire et imaginaire. Etudiés séparement dans la diversité de leur résonances sémantiques (philosophie : réflexion, sagesse, quête religieuse ; histoire : des peuples, personnelle du poète ; imaginaire : poésie, rêve, merveilleux, symbole, mythe. . ), ces 3 termes sont aussi évoqués dans leurs relations constantes (philosophie de l'histoire, rapports philosophie/imaginaire, histoire/imaginaire. . . ). Une structure duelle, antithétique, se révèle peu à peu : au niveau de l'espace (I), Lamartine se laisse séduire tantôt par des images de chute et de mort, tantôt par une symbolique de la rédemption et de l'enchantement (mythe du héros, magie de l'Orient, de la femme, de l'Eden. . . ). La vision de l'histoire (II) oppose aux dislocations de l'histoire contemporaine (déclin politique de la France, de l'empire Ottoman) les promesses d'une philosophie positive et optimiste du temps humain. Dans l'aventure personnelle de Lamartine enfin (III) s'affrontent une dramarturgie de l'exil et du deuil (désert sentimental, drame de la paternité) et une poétique compensatoire du voyage qui conduit à l'intérieur de soi-même, aux sources mêmes de l'expérience religieuse. On retrouve ainsi dans Le Voyage la trame des visions, grande épopée en clair-obscur conçue en amont du voyage, vaste odyssée de la chute et du salut, miroir fragmenté d'un poète déchiré entre détresse et espérance
