At the northern end of the Cap Corse peninsula, several klippes of ultramafic rocks (peridotite and serpentinite), among which the Monte Maggiore klippe is the least serpentinized one, rest upon continental-crust derived rocks (Centuri gneisses) and basic or metasedimentary schists (Schistes Lustrés). The Monte Maggiore ophiolitic klippe shares several characteristics with the Cima di Gratera klippe located 30 km further south. First, the two units are composed of a lherzolitic peridotite. Second, they record the same succession of metamorphic events. Third, in the Cap Corse tectonic pile, the

Abstract During the Oligocene, in the central western Alps, tectonic accretion of the external domain to the internal orogenic wedge along the Briançonnais frontal thrust (BFT) was followed by backfolding, resulting in the Alpine fanning structure. The Briançonnais fan axis was rapidly exhumed by erosion. This growing wedge at the scale of the entire Alpine structure was a short-lived situation that ended with the onset of extension in its internal part, before the end Oligocene. Geological mapping, stratigraphic observations, and U/Pb dating allow reconstructing the pre-orogenic setting of the transition zone between the distal European passive margin and the Alpine Tethys in the southwestern Alps. Although convergent tectonics overprinted the syn-rift Jurassic tectonic features, our data document an articulated Jurassic physiography. From the distal European passive margin oceanward, we distinguished: the Dronero Unit (the southernmost Dora Maira massif), represents a continental margin composite basement wherein monometamorphic metasediments are interlayered with La

Abstract The Alpine and Corsican Schistes lustrés (SL) are nearly azoic Jurassic-Cretaceous metasediments often associated with ophiolites. They are derived from both the vanished Valais (N-Penninic) and Piemont-Ligurian (S-Penninic) oceans and from their continental margins. Their age is generally poorly known. Because of fossils discovered by Alb. Heim and by S. Franchi at the beginning of the 20th century, they were believed for a long time to be mostly Liassic in age. We know now that the major part of the SL is Cretaceous. Deep-sea sediments, and particularly the SL, are made up of a hem

Abstract Brittle tectonics of the internal zones of the Western Alps is characterized by important normal faulting and minor transcurent faulting. Two different directions of extension occur through time, but the age of transition remains unconstrained. In order to fill this gap, and to provide new neotectonic data, we studied faulted Quaternary peri-glacial deposits in the core of the W-Alpine belt (Contamines Quarry, Lanslebourg, Haute-Maurienne/Vanoise area). These glaciolacustrine and fluvio-glacial sediments are capped by a ground moraine, which is related to a small glacier advance that
