Abstract:
The molecular aggregation states of tris(8-hydroxyquinoline)aluminum(III) (Alq) adsorbed in the transparent mesoporous silica (MPS) films with the different pore sizes (3.0 and 5.4 nm) were successfully clarified. The Alq molecules were easily incorporated into the films from the solution without the segregation on the surfaces. The adsorbed amount of Alq was controlled by changing the added amount in the initial solution to resultantly give the transparent and yellow-color films. The photoluminescence spectra significantly revealed that the state of Alq molecules in the mesopore varied depending on the adsorbed amount of Alq as well as the pore size, suggesting the characteristic mobility of the adsorbed Alq molecules in the mesopores as compared with that at the bulk or solution state. Therefore, the guest-guest interactions between Alq molecules as well as the host-guest interactions between Alq and mesopore were elucidated. This finding by the use of the mesoporous film hosts will be utilized for including luminescence species and be applicable for optical devices.

Abstract:
The ALQ-131 electronic countermeasure (ECM) system has provided the United States Air Force with proven self protection for many of its tactical fighter aircraft. The reliability and maintainability improvements of the ALQ-131 Block II has produced a system with a mean time between failures (MTBF) of 120 to 180 hours and greater than 95 percent availability for the 390 systems in theater during the Persian Gulf war. None of the aircraft carrying the ALQ-131 Block II was shot down, and at least 60 percent of the ALQ-131 Block IIs never needed maintenance and stayed on the aircraft throughout the air campaign. Due to classic reliability and maintainability approaches, the ALQ-131 has reached this high standard, but improved understanding of the environment experienced by the system will provide the next steps in reliability improvements. The capture of measured response data, as detailed in this paper, will provide a basis for developing life cycle and customer warranty tests which will guarantee to the customer that the ALQ-131 system will continue to perform reliably from takeoff to landing, and from mission to mission through the life of the system.

Abstract:

Abstract:
We have applied spectroscopic ellipsometry to obtain the optical constants, i.e., refractive indices (n) and extinction coefficients (k) of a thin tris (8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum ( Alq 3) film evaporated on the top of 300-nm-thick SiO 2 layer on a silicon substrate. Using a spectroscopic ellipsometer we collected the ellipsometric data of Ψ and Δ at 3 incident angles of 65°, 70° and 75° and 226 energies of 1.5 eV to 6.0 eV. For the organic sample, we adopted a simple two-film model consisting of ambient/organic film/ SiO 2 film/silicon substrate. Using the multiple oscillators of Tauc-Lorentz (TL) dispersion function and the two-film model, we obtained the thickness of the Alq 3 film. By data inversion technique, the spectra of n and k for the Alq 3 film are calculated from measured Ψ and Δ at each photon energy when the film thickness is fixed to a value obtained by the TL dispersion fitting. The extrapolation of optical function near band gap yields the band gap of 2.64 eV for Alq 3 film.

Abstract:
There is limited research on authentic leadership in senior leaders of healthcare organizations. The purpose of this study was to investigate authentic leadership from the perspectives of 14 healthcare Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) and 70 senior-level direct reports using the validated Authentic Leadership Questionnaire (ALQ) and one-on-one interviews. CEOs also completed a 20-hour leadership curriculum focusing on authentic leadership. Although CEOs rated themselves higher than their direct reports on the total ALQ, it only approached significance ( P = .060). Ratings on the four component parts of the ALQ were also higher, but only one was significant ( P = .025) with a trend toward significance on another ( P = .61). The CEOs’ scores were slightly higher after their self-directed study but only one component was significant ( P = .040). Interviews with the CEOs and direct reports underscore how healthcare leadership and authentic leadership specifically is viewed depending on organizational roles.

Full text
Abstract:
AbstractWe examine solidification in thin liquid films produced by annealing amorphous ${\mathrm{Alq} }_{3} $ (tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminium) in methanol vapour. Micrographs acquired during annealing capture the evolution of the film: the initially-uniform film breaks up into drops that coarsen, and single crystals of ${\mathrm{Alq} }_{3} $ nucleate randomly on the substrate and grow as slender ‘needles’. The growth of these needles appears to follow power-law behaviour, where the growth exponent, $\gamma $, depends on the thickness of the deposited ${\mathrm{Alq} }_{3} $ film. The evolution of the thin film is modelled by a lubrication equation, and an advection–diffusion equation captures the transport of ${\mathrm{Alq} }_{3} $ and methanol within the film. We define a dimensionless transport parameter, $\alpha $, which is analogous to an inverse Sherwood number and quantifies the relative effects of diffusion- and coarsening-driven advection. For large $\alpha $-values, the model recovers the theory of one-dimensional, diffusion-driven solidification, such that $\gamma \rightarrow 1/ 2$. For low $\alpha $-values, the collapse of drops, i.e. coarsening, drives flow and regulates the growth of needles. Within this regime, we identify two relevant limits: needles that are small compared to the typical drop size, and those that are large. Both scaling analysis and simulations of the full model reveal that $\gamma \rightarrow 2/ 5$ for small needles and $\gamma \rightarrow 0. 29$ for large needles.

A nanostructure modified silica with good fluorescence properties was prepared by grafting Al 3+ ions on the surface of nanoporous silica and then binding of 8-hydroxyquinoline (8- HQ ) to the grafted Al 3+ ions. The prepared material, denoted as NS - AlQ 2, was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption–desorption measurements, FT-IR and fluorescence spectra. This compound shows emission spectra approximately in the emission range of AlQ 3 complex. This procedure provides a simple method for grafting fluorescent molecules in the channels of nanoporous silica materials.

The interface of the tris (8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum ( Alq 3)/ LiF/Al system was investigated with ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS), metastable atom electron spectroscopy (MAES), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Strong chemical interaction was observed at Alq 3 on Al interface. By inserting a LiF layer, this interaction is suppressed and interface energy level alignment is changed to reduce a barrier for electron injection. The enhancement of device efficiency is ascribed to these phenomena. The importance of the combined use of various techniques on the same interface is stressed.

Abstract:
Tris(8-hydroxyquinolato) aluminum ( Alq 3), a prototypical molecule for organic light-emitting devices, has been studied via synchrotron radiation photoemission to investigate (1) the surface electronic structure of the molecules at room temperature and at elevated temperatures, (2) adsorption onto the inorganic Si (001)-2×1 surface, and (3) doping with the alkaline metal Mg . For case (1), three chemical environments of carbon are resolved. Moreover, the shake-up satellite structures are detected in all the N 1s, C 1s, O 1s, and Al 2p core-level spectra, but with different magnitudes. Annealing allows for a charge redistribution within Alq 3 itself. As to case (2), the organic molecules not only passivate the dangling bonds, but also rupture the dimer bonds. The wave function of the surface dangling bonds and of the pyridyl side of an 8-quinolinol ligand overlaps greatly so that charge is polarized towards, the organic adlayer. However, the polarization diminishes at greater coverage. With regard to case (3), the N 1s core-level spectra appear as an Mg -induced charge-transfer component with a binding energy lower than the original component. This new component grows gradually in intensity with increasing concentration of the dopant. Moreover, Mg also affects the O 1s core, as manifested by a component lying at a +1.09 eV higher binding energy than the original component. The Mg 2p core-level spectra, although rather broad, exhibit a shift toward a lower binding energy with increasing Mg vapor. Upon examining all these experimental results, we propose that Mg in the surface Alq 3 molecules forms clusters. Each cluster attaches to a pyridyl ring, affecting not only the nitrogen atom at that ring, but also the oxygen atom in the adjacent phenoxide ring. The depleted charge in the affected oxygen then flows about its adherent ligand and resides on the pyridyl ring at that ligand, resulting in a high Alq 3 anion state.

Abstract:
A series of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with or without a bathocuproine (BCP) layer inserted in the control device indium-tin-oxide (ITO)\ N,N'-bis-(1-naphthl)-diphenyl-1,1'- biphenyl-4,4'-diamine (NPB)\ tris(8-quinolinolato) aluminum (Alq)\LiF\Al have been fabricated and measured. Different influences of the BCP layer on electroluminescence (EL) of the OLEDs have been investigated. It is found that the highest efficiency of the OLED with a 1-nm BCP layer inserted between NPB and Alq increases to 3.99 cd/A, ~48% higher than that of the control device, while the EL efficiencies of the devices with other structures are similar to the latter. This phenomenon is ascribed to the hole-blocking effect of the BCP layer and the resulting higher density of carriers in the emission zone of the OLED. The EL performances of the OLEDs with different thicknesses of BCP layer are also discussed in details.

Abstract:
Aluminium exerts undeniable human health effects, so its concentration should be controlled in water treatment plants. The article presents and discusses the results of studies on the influence of selected properties of aluminium coagulants on the concentration of aluminium remaining in the purified water. The coagulants used were classical hydrolysing aluminium salts: aluminium sulphate (VI) and sodium aluminate as well as pre-hydrolysed polyaluminium chlorides: Flokor 105B and PAX XL10 that had different the alkalinity coefficient r = [OH−]/[Al3+]. The Al species distribution in the coagulants samples were analysed by the Ferron complexation timed spectrophotometry. On the basis of their reaction rates with ferron reagent, the aluminium species were divided into three categories: monomeric (Ala), medium polymerised (Alb) and colloidal (Alc). The usefulness of the tested aluminium coagulants due to the concentration of residual aluminium and dissolved aluminium, which is easily assimilated by the human body, was increased according to the following series: sodium aluminate (Ala = 100%, Alb = 0) < aluminium sulphate (VI) (Ala = 91%, Alb = 9%) < PAX XL 10 (Ala = 6%, Alb = 28%, r = 2.10) < Flokor 105B (Ala = 3%, Alb = 54%, r = 2.55).

Abstract:
Background: Given the risk of physical and psychosocial health that emerge in adolescents that are continuing into adulthood, identifying and addressing early signs of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) decline provides an opportunity to ensure that young people have a healthier progression through adolescence. Aim: To investigate the association between demographic characteristics, lifestyle health behaviours, and HRQoL of adolescents who live in Asia Pacific region, including Hong Kong in China, Beijing in China, Akashi in Japan, Seoul in South Korea, and Bangkok in Thailand. Methods: A cross-sectional self-reported survey carried out in a sample of 2296 adolescents that were aged 9–16 years (mean= 12.0; standard deviation [SD] = 1.63) was conducted in the five cities of the Asia Pacific region between January and August 2017. Demographic characteristics, adolescent lifestyle behaviours, and HRQoL were measured with demographic questionnaire, Adolescent Lifestyle Questionnaire’s (ALQ) seven domains and Paediatric Quality of Life’s (PedsQL 4.0) global score, respectively. Mixed multilevel model (MMLM) was used to fit the data. Results: After adjusting the demographic variables, one score increase in ALQ physical participation, nutrition, social support, and identity awareness are associated with an increase in PedsQL global score. On the contrary, one score increase in ALQ health practices is associated with a decrease in the PedsQL global score. The estimated mean of PedsQL global score of South Korea, Beijing, and Japan were better, while the score of Thailand and Hong Kong were poorer. Conclusions: Differentiating the impacts of promoting health behaviours among different countries can help in better understanding the health needs of adolescents in each country, especially in the Asia Pacific region, so that adequate and relevant resources can be allocated to reduce health-risk taking behaviours among this vulnerable group for health-promoting strategies.

Abstract:
Recent experimental reports suggest the formation of a highly spin-polarized interface ("spinterface") between a ferromagnetic (FM) Cobalt ( Co ) electrode and a metal-phthalocyanine (Pc) molecule. Another report shows an almost 60% giant magnetoresistance (GMR) response measured on Co / H 2 Pc -based single molecule spin valves. In this paper, we compare the spin injection and transport properties of organic spin valves with two different organic spacers, namely Tris(8-hydroxyquinolinato) aluminum ( Alq 3) and CoPc sandwiched between half-metallic La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 (LSMO) and Co electrodes. Alq 3-based spin valves exhibit clear and reproducible spin valve switching with almost 35% negative GMR at 10 K, in accordance with previous reports. In contrast, cobalt-pthalocyanine ( CoPc )-based spin valves fail to show clear GMR response above noise level despite high expectations based on recent reports. Investigations of electronic, magnetic and magnetotransport properties of electrode/spacer interfaces of LSMO/ CoPc / Co devices offer three plausible explanations for the absence of GMR: (1) CoPc films are strongly chemisorbed on the LSMO surface. This improves the LSMO magnetic properties but also induces local traps at the LSMO interface for spin-polarized charge carriers. (2) At the Co / CoPc interface, diffusion of Co atoms into the organic semiconductor (OS) layer and chemical reactivity between Co and the OS deteriorates the FM properties of Co . This renders the Co / CoPc interface as unsuitable for efficient spin injection. (3) The presence of heavy Co atoms in CoPc leads to large spin–orbit coupling in the spacer. The spin relaxation time in the CoPc layer is therefore considerably smaller compared to Alq 3. Based on these findings, we suggest that the absence of GMR in CoPc -based spin valves is caused by a combined effect of inefficient spin injection from FM contacts and poor spin transport in the CoPc spacer layer.

Abstract:
The relaxation dynamics of photo-excited states in single crystals of Alq 3, utilized as organic electroluminescent (EL) devices, have been investigated. The photoluminescence (PL) peak of Alq 3 changes depending on the exciting photon energy and the temperature. Nevertheless, a PL peak appears at the same energy position as the EL peak for excitations at energies above the transition edge and a new PL band has been resolved at energies below the EL peak for excitation at the lowest part of the absorption tail. However, for low temperatures and for excitation in the intermediate energy region of the absorption tail, a PL peak appears at the lower energy side. This PL peak shifts into the same energy as the EL peak with increasing temperature. This behavior is explained by a model which takes account of two luminescent states and one non-luminescent intermediate state. In the intermediate energy region, the temperature dependence of the PL for the excitation is also explained by a thermal activation process mediated by the non-luminescent state. The lifetimes of the three states obtained from the temporal profiles of the PL are understood consistently on the basis of this model.
