Abstract:
Golden dwarf mistletoe (Arceuthobium aureum subsp. aureum Hawksw. & Wiens) is endemic to east-central Guatemala (Departments Alta Verapaz, Baja Verapaz, and Quiche) (1,2). Its principal hosts are Pinus pseudostrobus Lindl., P. montezumae Lamb., and P. oaxacana Mirov (1). In May 1999, A. aureum subsp. aureum was observed infecting Pinus maximinoi H. E. Moore at four locations: 1.0 km south (altitude 1,580 m) and 5.4 km north (altitude >1,630 m) of La Cumbre, Baja Verapaz on Route CA-14, 8 km west (altitude 1,670 m) of Chilasco, Baja Verapaz, and 5 km west (altitude 1,490 m) of San Cristobal Verapaz, Alta Verapaz on Route 7-W. Although previous reports (1,2) indicated that golden dwarf mistletoe does not induce witches'-brooms on its hosts, older (>50 years), severely affected P. maximinoi were observed to have formed large witches'-brooms as a result of dwarf mistletoe infection. Although it has been suggested that Pinus oocarpa Schiede is susceptible to golden dwarf mistletoe (1), several large trees of this species were observed growing within 5 m of infected P. maximinoi at three of the four locations, but none were infected. Abstract:
Las especies del género Quercus son de importancia ecológica y económica dentro de los bosques donde se desarrollan. Pueden encontrarse desde zonas cálidas y secas hasta selvas lluviosas. Estos bosques, también son reconocidos por presentar alto grado de endemismo y gran número de interacciones ecológicas. Sin embargo, en Guatemala las especies de encino han sido poco estudiadas y están fuertemente amenazadas; a pesar de poseer un alto potencial para aprovechamiento, manejo y uso en la restauración de ecosistemas. Este estudio se orientó hacia la actualización de la riqueza y distribución geográfica de las especies de encino para Alta Verapaz, Baja Verapaz y Petén, a partir de la revisión de registros en herbarios nacionales, bases de datos en lí­nea de herbarios extranjeros y colectas de campo. Se registraron 19 especies de encinos en Alta Verapaz, Baja Verapaz y Petén, nueve especies más de las reportadas previamente, actualizándose los rangos de distribución departamental de 18 especies a excepción de Quercus sapotifolia Liebm. De las especies registradas, 16 se encuentran con algún grado de amenaza, según el Listado de Especies Amenazadas y listas rojas de UICN. También se identificaron vací­os de información acerca de la distribución de estas especies dentro de remanentes boscosos importantes en los departamentos evaluados. Se espera que a partir de este estudio se incrementen los esfuerzos por comprenden la riqueza y distribución de las especies de encino para Guatemala.

Abstract:
In the last decade, several species of magnolias have been described for Guatemala, five of which are found in Alta Verapaz, where, during an exploratory survey, we found a specimen that did not correspond morphologically to any previously reported species. To obtain material and determine phenology, several individuals were monitored for a year. Here, we describe this as a new species of Magnolia subsection Magnolia (Magnoliaceae). It is distributed in the cloud forest of San Cristóbal Verapaz, Alta Verapaz, and is culturally important for the local villagers. It differs from other similar species, M. montebelloensis and M. tribouillierana, in having an abruptly acuminate leaf apex (drip tip), larger flowers, purple staminophores and more stamens, among other traits. According to IUCN criteria, M. poqomchi is critically endangered [B1ab (iii), B2ab (iii)]. Additionally, we include a dichotomous key and distribution map for the genus in Guatemala. Taking this record into account, there are a total of ten native species reported for Guatemala, making it an important centre of species diversity for magnolias.

AbstractGerman coffee planters in nineteenth-century Alta Verapaz, Guatemala were also ethnographers, archaeologists, and geographers who published their works in Germany, the United States, and Guatemala. Their published works, as well as coffee plantation records, government correspondence, judicial records and other archival materials reveal how German coffee planters-cum-ethnographers drew upon ethnographic knowledge and representations to forge a reliable labor force. Like ethnographers in Britain's colonies, German settlers in Alta Verapaz understood the potential symmetry between ethnography and the governance of indigenous peoples. Their ethnographic knowledges also push us to reconsider distinctions drawn between German cosmopolitan ethnographic traditions and British functionalist ones and demonstrate how ethnographic knowledge and cultural difference could be deployed to forge new kinds of racial capitalism. In Guatemala, the intimate relationship between the rise of capitalism and ethnography shaped the anti-communism of mid-twentieth-century anthropology in the region.

ResumenAunque las tres fuentes principales de obsidiana se encuentran ubicadas en las tierras altas, los modelos propuestos hasta la fecha para reconstruir la distribución de este material en las tierras bajas no suelen tomar en consideración los factores sociopolíticos e históricos que han afectado las entidades mayas de tierras altas. Sin embargo, estos factores son determinantes de los sistemas comerciales a larga distancia. Al examinar y comparar la ruta por tierra de Alta Verapaz y la ruta fluvial–marítima del Motagua–Caribe en una perspectiva geográfica, sociopolítica, e histórica que integra los grandes centros de Kaminaljuyú y de Quiriguá, así como los centros de Verapaz, se concluye que la segunda ruta fue sin duda más activa que la primera en el comercio de obsidiana, entre otros bienes. Pero, la complejidad de las secuencias históricas de estos centros y la variabilidad de sus estructuras sociopolíticas sugieren que la competencia entre las dos rutas fue intensa y provocó cierta inestabilidad en los sistemas comerciales y flujos de obsidiana, por una y otra ruta.

En esta investigación se analizaron los resultados sobre los impactos de las acciones de la responsabilidad social empresarial minera en el desarrollo rural del municipio de San Antonio Senahú, Alta Verapaz; el objetivo de esta fue establecer los cambios en la dimensión social, económica y ambiental. En las tres dimensiones se analizaron las variables de: salud, aspectos agrarios, educación, seguridad alimentaria, actividad económica y protección del entorno. El estudio se realizó en nueve comunidades rurales del municipio de San Antonio Senahú, departamento de Alta Verapaz. Esta se efectuó bajo la metodología cualitativa y cuantitativa, con una muestra poblacional de 167 familias de las nueve comunidades, además se llevaron a cabo entrevistas con familias individuales, grupos focales y personal de la empresa minera. La investigación permitió conocer el tipo de acciones que realizó la empresa minera en las mismas y la calidad de vida con que cuentan las familias como la participación en proyectos de desarrollo rural. Asimismo, en las conclusiones se indica que algunas de las acciones de responsabilidad social empresarial no evidenciaron la sostenibilidad en el tiempo.

Abstract:
The dietary and medicinal uses of indigenous green vegetables were studied quantitatively over a 13-month period in a rural, semi-rural and urban K'ekchi population in Guatemala. Seventeen species of indigenous greens were consumed, with seasonal variation in intake (p $<$.001) being related to agricultural practices. There was a lower frequency of consumption of greens among the urban group (p $<$.001). Within, and between, the communities, individuals exhibited heterogeneity in dietary intake and approaches to treatment of helminthic infection. There was no association between dietary intake of indigenous greens and the socioeconomic indicators measured (age, type of employment, household size and land use score). Proximate composition, calcium, phosphorus, iron, potassium, magnesium, phylloquinone and total carotenes were determined for 13 species of indigenous greens. Composition of 5 of these has not been previously reported. Plasma phylloquinone was tested as a biochemical marker for validating determination of green plant intake.

En el primer capitulo abordar? sint?ticamente la manera c?mo las nociones de raza, etnia y grupo ?tnico han sido abordadas desde distintos enfoques, posturas y disciplinas diversas, que siguen generando debate. La intenci?n es contribuir y exponer las interacciones entre la etnia y el g?nero como planos de an?lisis convergentes. En el segundo cap?tulo, se hace referencia al racismo institucional en el ?mbito macro social desde una perspectiva hist?rica. La idea fundamental fue hacer visible el racismo que normalmente queda invisible, con el fin de identificar la l?gica de la articulaci?n de los conceptos y su uso instrumental por parte del Estado para legitimar el racismo y el poder. Por ?ltimo, el tercer cap?tulo, recoge las experiencias de sexismo conjugadas con el racismo en la vida cotidiana. Abstract:
Landscapes are created and transformed by human beings as they engage in a dialogue with their biotic and abiotic environment. The Q'eqchi'---the fourth largest group of the Maya language family with speakers numbering over 700,000---are the primary transformers of the lowland forested landscapes of northern Alta Verapaz. However, families actively involved in this transformation are new arrivals to the area and hail from a botanical environment wholly different from the lowland tropical forests of their new home. This dissertation is based on 17 months of ethnographic and ethnobotanical research in two Q'eqchi' communities---one in the highlands, the other in the lowlands---and unravels the cultural process of behavioral and linguistic adaptation to an unfamiliar botanical environment Using the Mesoamerican aldea as the unit of analysis, the methods of this controlled comparison are both qualitative and quantitative. Participant observation and a long-term, personal commitment to the communities and the Q'eqchi' language provided an intimate understanding of ethnobotany as applied to the cultural domains of house construction, home gardens, agriculture, harvesting of forest resources, local and regional markets, and plant related lexical patterns. Community surveys, home garden inventories, and a plant trail experiment provided a large, quantitative data set that helped determine patterns in the cultural matrix. Basic descriptive statistics, multilinear regression, multi-dimensional scaling, cluster analysis, agreement matrices, and consensus analysis were all employed to help determine the patterns of cultural adaptation within the two communities The cultural data show that, although the lowlands are indeed largely unfamiliar to the migrants, distant and recent histories have played a role in preadapting the Q'eqchi' to the lowlands. Through these historical and contemporary channels, knowledge of plants and other characteristics of the lowland forests have reached the highlands, essentially helping to homogenize plant knowledge and behavior across any artificial altitudinal categories. Nevertheless, the lowlands are drastically new and the needs and stressors of the new ecological and cultural environment seem to elicit numerous instances of behavioral and lexical modification The 'worldy' Q'eqchi'---an ethnographic enigma when compared to other Mayan groups---have been stigmatized in the conservation and anthropological literature as the 'invaders' of a 'pristine' ecological haven in northern Guatemala. Until this community and the Guatemalan government understand and address the pressing problems in the highlands, the lowlands will remain a social and ecological sponge, destined to become uninhabitable

Abstract:
Casa Concretus es sin duda una vivienda inspirada en el bêton brut de Le Corbusier, en el brutalismo. Simboliza una actuación sencilla, sin grandes pretensiones, que va al grano y actúa sobre lo realmente necesario... la Casa Concretus es hormigón crudo, pero veraz, noble y austero. En su concepción, además de todos los parámetros de índole normativo, se aplicaron muchos conceptos tecnológicos necesarios para obtener mejoras en el ámbito energético, de la sostenibilidad o de la mecánica estructural, además de que siempre se tuvo en cuenta cómo y dónde se iba a construir, desde el principio, con el fin de adaptar, optimizar y programar un sistema constructivo que diese como resultado una obra arquitectónica de alto valor estético bajo la premisa del estricto cumplimiento de plazos y costes. Es de especial interés todos los estudios y pruebas que se hicieron en tanto al hormigón, su formulación, encofrados, puesta en obra y fases de construcción teniendo en cuenta que los forjados, toda la envolvente y todas las particiones se realizaron en este material, con acabado visto, y que contiene, embebidas en él todas las instalaciones del edificio. En la construcción de esta casa, no se utilizó ni un solo ladrillo.***Undoubtedly, Concretus House is a dwelling inspired in the brutalist style of b.ton brut of Le Corbusier. Austere, unpretentious, making a point and acting on what is truly necessary. Crude but noble, Concretus House is honesty and austerity in one. Apart from all the planning requirements, at it’s conception many technological concepts were incorporated to obtain a superior level of sustainability, energetic efficiency and structural mechanics behaviour. From its conception, the how and the where of Concretus House were always considered. The object was to optimise, adapt and to schedule the building process to achieve an exalted aesthetic work of architecture under the premise of maintaining strict adherence to the costings and completion of works date. ItÅLs important to recognise how necessary all the tests were with respect to the concrete itself, it's formula, formworks, execution and stages of construction. Bear in mind that all of the slabs, and all that enveloped the building itself including all the internal dividing walls were formed in exposed concrete. All the installations and facilities were embedded within the concrete and not a single brick was used within it.
