Abstract:
An approach of ease-off flank modification for hypoid gears was proposed to improve the meshing performance of automobile drive axle. Firstly, a conjugate pinion matching with gear globally was developed based on gear meshing theory. Secondly, a modified pinion was represented by a sum of two vector functions determining the conjugate pinion and the normal ease-off deviations expressed by both predesigned transmission error function and tooth profile modification curves to change the initial contact clearance of the tooth. Thirdly, the best ease-off deviations were determined by optimizing the minimum amplitude of loaded transmission error (ALTE) based on tooth contact analysis (TCA) and loaded tooth contact analysis (LTCA). Finally, the results show that effective contact ratios (εe) are established by clearances both teeth space and of contact elliptical, and greatly affect ALTE. The εe is a variable value with increasing loads for the tooth with modification. ALTE decreases with increasing εe. After εe reaches the maximum, ALTE increases with increasing loads. The mismatch of the best ease-off tooth is minimal, which contributes to effective reduction in ALTE, thus significantly improving drive performance.

Abstract:
Background: The symptoms of child abuse and ALTE are similar. Diagnosing child abuse in those who present with an ALTE may be difficult since the symptoms are similar, and bruising is not always seen in those abused. Approximately only 50% of infants who have bruising are found to be abused. There is limited literature showing bruises to the face or blood in the nose or mouth are distinguishing features of those abused infants who initially present to the Emergency Department (ED) for ALTE. Objective: To determine if bruises or contusions to the face or body in infants occur more often in those who present to the ED as an ALTE but found to have Abusive Head Injury (AHI) versus those who present as ALTE and not found to have AHI. A secondary aim was to determine if blood in the mouth and/or nose was present in those with ALTE but found to have AHI. Methods: Retrospective case-control study of infants Results: There were 49 patients in the study: 20 AHI and 29 non-AHI. All infants in both groups had apnea as a presenting symptom. There were no differences in race or gender between groups. No patients in the non-AHI group had retinal hemorrhages. There was not a significant difference in CPR performed prior to arriving to the ED between groups. Intubation was performed with higher frequency in the AHI patients than non-AHI patients (62% vs 0%, p=0.002 by Fisher’s Exact Test). All nine patients requiring intubation were in the AHI group and had intracranial bleeds. Bruises were present with higher frequency in the abused than non-abused group (31% vs 0%, P=0.017 by Fisher’s Exact Test). All bruises were found on patients’ bodies and none on their faces. There were 2 patients with blood from the nose but those were in the non-AHI group and had received CPR. Conclusions: Infants with ALTE who have AHI are more likely to present with bruising to the body, retinal hemorrhages, and intracranial bleeds than infants who have AHI. Blood in the nose does not identify those with AHI. The performance of CPR does not differentiate between groups but the need for intubation was associated with AHI.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT In September 1871, Johannes Brahms presented Clara Schumann with an untitled work in F## minor for solo piano, which he later revised and published as the Capriccio, op. 76/1. Surviving correspondence demonstrates Clara's intimate familiarity with the work throughout the 1870s. In May 1876, two years before releasing manuscripts of the Capriccio among his wider circle, Brahms composed the song Alte Liebe (Old Love) to a poem by Carl Candidus; he immediately sent an autograph to the baritone Julius Stockhausen, along with instructions to sing it to Clara, whom he proclaimed the best person to hear it. Examination of the music against the backdrop of its origins and the circumstances of its initial performance reveals that Brahms deliberately incorporated echoes of the Capriccio into Alte Liebe and points to ways in which those echoes might have influenced Clara's understanding of the song and its text. A broad array of music-analytic and documentary evidence (including the newly rediscovered autograph of Alte Liebe) permits detailed investigation of the interpretive perspective that Brahms's compositional choices encouraged from a listener with Clara's unique musical memories and manner of interacting with chamber music. Imaginatively reconstructing her encounter with Alte Liebe yields fresh insights into Brahms's compositional practice in the private genres of song and small-scale chamber music, a rich new historical context in which to ground the study of allusion in his works, and a rare opportunity to explore the musical and personal dynamics of his closest friendship.

Abstract:
Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is defined as the sudden death of an infant younger than one year of age which remains unexplained after a thorough case investigation, including performance of a complete autopsy, examination of the death scene, and review of the clinical history. About 90% of SIDS occur before six months of age, the peak incidence is between two and four months, and the median age for death is elven weeks. The clinical, social, and economic relevance of SIDS, together with the evidence that prevention of this syndrome was possible, has significantly stimulated research into risk factors for the development of SIDS in the hope of being able to introduce new effective preventive measures. This narrative review discusses the potential relationships between apparent life-threatening events (ALTE) or brief resolved unexplained events (BRUE) and SIDS development, and when a home cardiorespiratory monitor is useful for prevention of these conditions. A literature analysis showed that home cardiorespiratory monitoring has been considered a potential method to identify not only ALTE and BRUE but SIDS also. ALTE and BRUE are generally due to underlying conditions that are not detectable in SIDS infants. A true relationship between these conditions has never been demonstrated. Use of home cardiorespiratory monitor is not recommended for SIDS, whereas it could be suggested for children with previous ALTE or severe BRUE or who are at risk of the development of these conditions. However, use of home cardiorespiratory monitors assumes that family members know the advantages and limitations of these devices after adequate education and instruction in their use.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the actual problem of historically grounded performance of Baroque vocal music by academic vocalists. Listening activity, the demand for ancient music in Russia raises issues for performers that need to be resolved within the framework of historical performance practice. To fulfill all the conditions, it becomes important to receive an appropriate specialized education. In Russia, little attention is paid to the professional training of academic vocalists in the field of historical singing or baroque singing, whereas in Italy and Germany independent faculties of ancient music are intensively working, including, along with instrumentalists, the training of singers. The author reveals the features of the content and organization of the educational process in universities in Germany and Russia. The purpose of this article is to identify possible ways to form a solo academic singer of historical specialization. The methodological basis of the work consists of historical, analytical methods that reveal the topic from various angles. Using the example of a number of educational institutions that train specialists in the field of historical singing, such as the University of the Arts Bremen, the University of Music and Theatre “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy” Leipzig, the Cologne University of Music and the Nuremberg University of Music, the article presents a comparative analysis of curricula, examines the studied disciplines within various modules. The conclusion is made about the prospects of using the experience of foreign countries in the training of specialists in the field of baroque singing.

Abstract:
This article focuses on an incident of censorship and police intervention at the Königstädtische Theater in Berlin in 1828, occasioned by a performance of Gotthilf August von Maltitz'sThe Old Student(Der alte Student). Identifying how the playwright and his actors sought to represent political topics onstage allows me to explore how theatre functioned as a potential player in an incipient public sphere. In turn this reveals how the desire to represent political topics onstage and to become a performative player in the public sphere was already under way in the 1820s, well before the revolutionary turbulence of 1848.

Abstract:
Taking the opening solo song from the Florentine intermedi of 1589 as its focus, this article engages with questions regarding musical ownership, authorship, and the culture of print as it relates to musico-theatrical performance. The song, ‘Dalle più alte sfere’, was performed by the Florentine court’s prima donna Vittoria Archilei and the version she ostensibly sang appeared two years later in a commemorative print. While calling into question rigid distinctions between performer and composer during this period, the article nonetheless suggests that Archilei likely ‘composed’ the song, for which there are conflicting attributions. Evidence for this assertion includes disjunctions between the song as it appeared in print, its likely mode of ‘composition’, and the song’s realisation through the process-oriented act of live performance. These issues stand in stark relief to the likely incentives for publishing the Medici-commissioned music: harnessing the possibilities of print technology, the Florentines could effectively distill – and thus claim as their own – a primarily Roman/Neapolitan-associated performance practice, at the same time as attempting to rival the female-centred musical traditions of competing courts.

Abstract:
We present two recent test case application examples of a new high-performance insulation panel with product name SLENTITE® used as core element of a rendered internal wall insulation system. The first case study refers to the 18th-century building Alte Schäfflerei now the Fraunhofer Centre for Conservation and Energy Performance of Historic Buildings, at the monastery Benediktbeuern, southern Germany, where SLENTITE® was applied in 11/2017. The second test case was installed in 04/2019 in a heritage building situated in the historic center of Luxembourg. In Benediktbeuern, a single layer of insulation material was chosen, in Luxembourg we applied two layers of insulation. In both cases, detail work around the windows was a main task and we gained experience on product processing under real conditions. In terms of indoor room usage, the object in Benediktbeuern is used as exhibition hall with rare traffic and well controlled climate, whereas the object in Luxembourg is used as meeting room without climate control. Measured data of 20 months from the object in Benediktbeuern and first impressions of the performance in Luxembourg are discussed.

Abstract:
The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), widely recognized as one of the most important documents in foreign language teaching, defines the levels of communicative language proficiency. The common points of reference are primarily meant to assist foreign language teachers and test developers striving to adhere to a unified understanding of CEFR levels. Yet it is not uncommon among practitioners to claim a particular level of a task, text or sample of learner performance drawing merely on their individual experience and intuition, with only limited knowledge of the original descriptor scales. The main purpose of this paper is to describe general procedures for relating foreign language tests and learner performances to the CEFR as they are prescribed by the Association of Language Testers in Europe (ALTE). The five stages of the linking process are familiarisation, specification, standardisation training and benchmarking, standard setting and validation. While the full implementaion of the linking process is a complex undertaking mostly applied in the context of high stakes examinations, certain stages of the linking process could be implemented by individual language schools and programmes. Benchmarking is one of such stages. It involves identification of illustrative learner performances for different proficiency levels. This is a stage which also has its relevance in daily teaching practice and could be easily incorporated in routine assessment procedures thus increasing foreign language teachers' awareness of CEFR levels. Therefore the discussion of the formal linking procedures in this paper is followed by a demonstration of an exercise in benchmarking. It is meant to acquaint the Lithuanian readers with the complexity of the linking process and encourage a more principled approach to level allocations. The exercise in alignment with CEFR level decribed here involves L2 spoken Lithuanian produced by five foreign learners of young age. Sample performances were taken from a corpus of L2 Lithuanian compiled within the XXX project. Since the subjects are children of 11–12 years, another important challenge in the alignment with the CEFR is children's maturity and the necessary adaptation of CEFR descriptors for young learners. Qualitative analysis of five learner samples offers a number of insights into practicalities of linking procedures and discusses ways to ensure reliability and objectivity.

Abstract:
The interest in permanent-magnets or pure reluctance synchronous machines has increased rapidly in the last years. This trend is a combination of factors: the technological progress and a closer attention to environmental issues to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to support a green economy. The diffusion of electrical machines in the industrial industry, transports and household appliances could be split in two types: • Electrification, that means chancing the technologies relying on non-renewable sources with hybrid or full electric systems; • The transition from electrical machines based on traditional technologies, but less efficient, to more efficient electrical machines. The automotive is major industry of the electrification process followed to the other transportation industries e.g. railways, aircraft, etc. The 50% of global electric energy is converted in electric motor of which the 80% relies on traditional technologies. These motors are reliable, but less efficient. As a consequence, many companies are adopting more efficient motors or more convenient ones from a control point of view under the pressure of International Standards and European Directives. The contribution of this thesis is developing design methods of synchronous electrical machines with the aim to improve their performance, reliability and fault-tolerant capability. For that purpose, the research activity has focused on some fundamental issues. The first topic is the study of optimization machine design methods inclusive of typical manufacturing defects even in healthy machine conditions. The aim is analyzing the defect influence on performance and improving machine reliability and robustness. After this study, it is followed a research on the demagnetization issue of surface permanent-magnet machines with a special consideration of magnets eddy currents. The activity result is a new design of internal permanent-magnet rotor which has prototyped and tested. The last topic is a study of fault-tolerant capability of a pure reluctance synchronous machine with two independent three-phase windings fed by two inverters. The machine geometry has optimized according to both optimal and fault conditions; the design with the best performance in fault conditions has been chosen and it has been analyzed with respect to different parameters in healthy condition and with one faulty winding.

MANCA, EMANUELE. "Grid and high performance computing applied to bioinformatics." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Cagliari, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/11584/266595.

Abstract:
Recent advances in genome sequencing technologies and modern biological data analysis technologies used in bioinformatics have led to a fast and continuous increase in biological data. The difficulty of managing the huge amounts of data currently available to researchers and the need to have results within a reasonable time have led to the use of distributed and parallel computing infrastructures for their analysis. In this context Grid computing has been successfully used. Grid computing is based on a distributed system which interconnects several computers and/or clusters to access global-scale resources. This infrastructure is exible, highly scalable and can achieve high performances with data-compute-intensive algorithms. Recently, bioinformatics is exploring new approaches based on the use of hardware accelerators, such as the Graphics Processing Units (GPUs). Initially developed as graphics cards, GPUs have been recently introduced for scientific purposes by rea- son of their performance per watt and the better cost/performance ratio achieved in terms of throughput and response time compared to other high-performance com- puting solutions. Although developers must have an in-depth knowledge of GPU programming and hardware to be effective, GPU accelerators have produced a lot of impressive results. The use of high-performance computing infrastructures raises the question of finding a way to parallelize the algorithms while limiting data dependency issues in order to accelerate computations on a massively parallel hardware. In this context, the research activity in this dissertation focused on the assessment and testing of the impact of these innovative high-performance computing technolo- gies on computational biology. In order to achieve high levels of parallelism and, in the final analysis, obtain high performances, some of the bioinformatic algorithms applicable to genome data analysis were selected, analyzed and implemented. These algorithms have been highly parallelized and optimized, thus maximizing the GPU hardware resources. The overall results show that the proposed parallel algorithms are highly performant, thus justifying the use of such technology. However, a software infrastructure for work ow management has been devised to provide support in CPU and GPU computation on a distributed GPU-based in- frastructure. Moreover, this software infrastructure allows a further coarse-grained data-parallel parallelization on more GPUs. Results show that the proposed appli- cation speed-up increases with the increase in the number of GPUs.

Abstract:
The high performance lightweight aggregate concrete (HPLC), with national expanded clay, is an alternative material for the Brazilian constructions, considering the climatic characteristics of the country and low cost of the material. But now, little available information exists about the production and application of this concrete with lightweight aggregate, additions and addictive national. The aim of this dissertation is to analyze the structural behavior, by mechanical tests (compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and deformation modulus) of HPLC, under action of high temperatures. For so much, it takes place a comparative analysis of the mechanical resistance of the concrete in study, constituted by lightweight aggregate of expanded clay, with the conventional concrete HPC (high performance concrete), composed by crushed basalt coarse aggregate, determining the respective mechanical strength, after they have been exposed to external temperatures of up to 800°C. Through the analysis of the results obtained experimentally, it can be proven the viability of HPLC, produced with expanded clay, comparatively to HPC, under to the action of high temperatures.

Ingolf Dahl’s Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Wind Orchestra is considered a master concert work in saxophone literature. The work was written for saxophone pioneer Sigurd Rascher who was active in commissioning new works for the instrument. Piet Swerts’ Klonos, composed over 40 years after Dahl’s Concerto, is a much newer composition. The work has gained national recognition as a popular competition piece and is a synthesis of new and old compositional styles. These two works strongly showcase the flexibility and virtuosity capable of the skilled saxophonist. This master’s report, presented as extended program notes, includes biographical information about the composers, a historical and stylistic overview of the selected compositions, and a harmonic and formal analysis of the music with respect to performance considerations.

Abstract:
This work presents a study of the best known ATM traffic policing mechanism and an analysis of management conditions using the SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol). For this reason the managed objects were considerated pertaining to MIBs (Management Information Base) proposed by many working groups. This work inquires the possibility of managing the traffic policing process using the objects of this selected MIBs. Realizing this management, it can follow the network state and to utilize these informations in the planning of network capacity, because many times, the congestion only not happen for traffic excess but it occurs by worse dimension of the computer networks components. It was studied many traffic and congestion control mechanisms. These mechanisms belong to two procedures proposed by the ATM Forum: usage/network parameter control and feedback control mechanism. The algorithms studied for the usage/network parameter control were: leaky bucket, virtual leaky bucket, buffered leaky bucket, jumping window, moving window, peak counters and generic cell rate algorithm. The feedback control has two variations: credit-based and rate-based. The second mechanism was better accepted internationally, and many algorithms followed its principles. The algorithms were: rate based flow control, explicit rate control, VS/VD (Virtual Source / Virtual Destination), PRCA (Proportional Rate Control Algorithm), EPRCA (Enhanced Proporcional Rate Control Algorithm), ERICA (Explicit Rate Indication for Congestion Avoidance) e CAPC (Congestion Avoidance using Proportional Control). This work studies the two basic mechanism and the rate-based algorithms. The inspected MIBs for this work were: RFC I695's MIB [AHM 94], definitions of supplemental managed objects for ATM management [LY 96], ATM Forum ATM UNI 3.1 Specification's MIB [CHA 96], ATM Forum M4 interface's MIB [ATM 96] , Bay Networks enterprise's MIB [BAY 96] and Cisco enterprise's MIB [WAN 96] [CHA 96a], [GRO 96], [GRO 96a], [RBH 96] e [BAK 96]. As a result of the study of the traffic and congestion control mechanisms and the analysis of selected MIBs, table were built that try to relate the necessary parameters to control traffic and congestion mechanisms with the managed objects. Each control parameter is examined if it has a managed object or a object arrangement that can supply the parameter value. This analysis will verify if managed objects can control traffic and congestion control.

The yerba mate Market has been growing and getting featured in the most important countries and states which produces it, using the yerba mate not only for it’s traditional drink, “the chimarrão”, but with other alternative uses that has been appearing because of it’s important properties. Due to the increasing of the demand in different kinds of markets, they request the need of researches which evaluate and confirms the conditioning facts of the performance aiming to generate informations to subsidize priority actions of the improvement for it’s increasing sector. In this case, the actual research had as objective to identify the factors which condition the “ervateiras” industries performance from Alto Taquari/RS. As the theoretical contribution for the subsidized review of the data had used the Economical Industry theory, the Costs Economy of transactions and the theory which had involved the use of Importance-Performance Matrix. The primary data were collected through structured questionnaires in a quantitative way, using the likert scale of 1-7 points. The questionnaires were applied via Google Docs and after that shown physically through the industry agents in the “ervateiro” pole from Alto Taquari/RS. The questionnaire was structured in seven sections, both first and second questions referred to the gathered information about the interviewed people and the “ervateiras” industries, which had as objective describe and characterize the studied objetct. The four other sections referred to the conditioning dimensions of the performance, which are they: Production Factors/ Markets/ Logistics/ Institutional Ambient/ and the seventh section was about the view of the productive chain of yerba mate seen by the “ervateiras” industries. The analytical method of the data was consisted in the application of the matrix importance-performance suggested by Slack, Chambers and Johnston (2002), in which provide information about the importance level and assigned performance of the factors that made each one of these dimensions. The data was organized in spreadsheets of the excel and submitted to a describing statistic analysis, with average values referred to the degree of importance and the average referred to the level of performance for each dimension analyzed. With the result of research it is concluded that the dimension of “production factors” the necessary items of the improvement actions are the availability of the raw material , the acquisition cost of the machinery, the availability of labor and the possession and capacity of the machinery. In the “market” dimension, the items that have the need of 11 improvement actions are the factors about the swapped products, the placement of the product in outside market, the degree of concentrations of the raw material developers and the final product’s quality. In the logistic dimension some factors were placed in the urgent-action-zone, like the cost of means of transportation to the industry, the storage capacity to the industry, conditions of the transport to de industry and the conditions of the storage to the industry. In the same dimension, some factors like the flow of technological information, the contract between the industry and the producer, the contract between and the retail, the costs of the storage for the industries needs the improvement actions. In the “Institutional Ambient” dimension, the factors which refers to the macroeconomic indicators, environmental legislation and the agroindustrial process, the environmental legislation and the rural production, sanitary inspection and the agroindustrial process and the access to the credit condition for the industries still need the actions of improvement to increase it’s performance. This condition should provide subsidies and information that will contribute with the decision taken and in the establishment of business strategies with the desire of increasing the performance of the activities inside the “ervateiras” industries, turning into the most competitive one in the market which they are part of.

Abstract:
The aim of the present work was to develop new improved magnetic materials suitable for permanent magnets. Two kinds of materials were studied: (Nd,Sm)5(Fe,MT)17 based materials, were MT is a transition metal and, (Nd,Pr)FeB nanocrystalline materials (exchange spring magnets) with TiC additions. The 5:17 alloys were melted in an arc melting furnace followed by a long annealing (at least 30 days). We tried to improve the magnetic properties by means of chemical substitutions (Ti, Co, Mn, etc.) and/or by addition of interstitial atoms of deuterium or nitrogen. The samples were characterized by means of thermomagnetic analysis (TMA), low temperature magnetometry, X ray and neutron diffraction, and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The main results were: a) increase of Tc temperature (up to 70 ºC) and; b) determination of interstitial sites for deuterium. (Nd,Pr)FeB alloys with TiC additions were melted in an arc melting furnace, being processed in a melt spinner system. After the samples were heat treated at different temperatures. The promissing literature results for Nd2Fe14B+TiC were also obtained for Pr2Fe14B + TiC, but not for systems composed by Pr2Fe14B and Fe3B phases with TiC additions. However, good results were obtained in systems composed by Pr2Fe14B and α-Fe with TiC additions, with 30% increase on coercive field values Hc, and 15% increase on (BH)max.

The development of quantum algorithms is not a easy task. Elements such as entanglement and quantum paralelism, intrinsics to quantum computation, difficult this task. Quantum walks are crucial tools for development of algorithms, mainly search algorithms. There are many types of quantum walks: with coin toss, Szegedy's, using tessellation (grouping of vertices) and the continuous-time quantum walk. To extract statistics data of a quantum walk, we need to perform its simulation. In this work, we develped the simulator Hiperwalk, a new simulator of quantum walks in graphs of one and two dimension for the quantum walk with a coin toss and coinless using tessellation. The Hiperwalk allows the user to perform simulations of quantum walks in graphs using high performance computing (HPC), even though the user does not knowing parallel programming. The user can employ the parallel devices such as CPU, GPGPU and accelerators cards to speedup the overall process of the walk.

Abstract:
AbstractWhole-genome bisulfite sequencing (WGBS) is a popular method for characterizing cytosine methylation because it is fully quantitative and has base-pair resolution. While WGBS is prohibitively expensive for experiments involving many samples, low-coverage WGBS can accurately determine global methylation and erasure at similar cost to high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) or enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA). Moreover, low-coverage WGBS has the capacity to distinguish between methylation in different cytosine contexts (e.g., CG, CHH, and CHG), can tolerate low-input material (<100 cells), and can detect the presence of overrepresented DNA originating from mitochondria or amplified ribosomal DNA. In addition to describing a WGBS library construction and quantitation approach, here we detail computational methods to predict the accuracy of low-coverage WGBS using empirical bootstrap samplers and theoretical estimators similar to those used in election polling. Using examples, we further demonstrate how non-independent sampling of cytosines can alter the precision of error calculation and provide methods to improve this.

Abstract:
Twenty-five years after Anton Bruckner’s death, groups formed in Germany to revise the composer’s biography, highlighting Bruckner as a German mystic in the medieval tradition of Meister Eckhart and his successors, and thus a figure newly divorced from the facts of his (Austrian) life. Through reference to monographs from this 1920s Bruckner renaissance—by Karl Grunsky, Oskar Lang, Erich Schwebsch, and Richard Wetz —this chapter demonstrates that, despite their ‘anti-modern’ rhetoric, these authors engaged mystic doctrine to advocate connection to a new sense of community above the individual self, expressed in terms of narrow, pro-Christian nationalistic feeling. This advocacy envisaged cultural consequences, even new symphonic performance practices. It influenced other Bruckner commentators of the decade, including those who have rarely been placed in such a context, and the chapter turns to Ernst Kurth’s Bruckner monograph (1925) and the central role that a specifically German mysticism plays within Kurth’s musical and biographical interpretations.

Abstract:
The school environment has an important educational impact, being a factor that can essentially influence school performance. School performance in visually impaired students is often poor, presents with difficulties due to deficiency and can develop inhibited attitudes, passive, poor mobilization in cognitive tasks. A stimulating environment, mediated by wealthy adults, which encourages the involvement of children in cognitive tasks, has an equalizing effect on the cognitive and educational level. The qualities of the families of the students' backgrounds, including their investment in meditations and the induction in the children of the interest towards the school contribute the most to the increase of the performances. The evaluation of performance must be as continuous as it is significant in its final or summative form.

Abstract:
This work aims to provide comparative results between OpenCL and oneAPI performance on FPGAs, GPUs, and CPUs regarding the execution of stencils in the simulation of seismic acoustic wave propagation. Our results show that the naive stencil code performs better on GPU and CPU than FPGA without strong knowledge on how to implement optimizations. Another result is that oneAPI code is easier and faster to implement than OpenCL as it automatically applies some FPGA-specific optimizations at compile time.

Dunham, Rex A., Boaz Moav, Thomas Chen, and Benzion Cavari. Expression and Inheritance of Growth Hormone Gene Constructs and Selective Breeding of Transgenic Farmed Fish. United States Department of Agriculture, August 1994. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/1994.7568774.bard.

Full text
Abstract:
Objectives: To accomplish stable expression, inheritance of transgenes and growth improvement in transgenic channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, and common carp, Cyprinus carpio, containing growth hormone (GH) genes, develop transgenic fish with all fish constructs, determine the relationships between copy number, expression and growth, determine the combined affect of selective breeding and gene transfer and assess environmental risk of transgenic fish. To develop mechanisms of triploidization for transgenic carp. Results: Performance of transgenic channel catfish was made uniform by selection. Growth of channel catfish and common carp was improved 40-50% more by combining gene transfer of GH genes with selection and crossbreeding than with either selection of crossbreeding. Growth improvement of transgenic catfish was not strongly correlated with copy number and expression levels. Progress was made in producting triploid transgenic common carp. Insertion of salmonid GH gene did not alter reproductive performance in channel catfish. Transgenic channel catfish grew no faster than controls when they had to forage on natural food and transgenic individuals were slightly more vulnerable to predation indicating that fitness of transgenic individuals in natural conditions is less than or equal to non-transgenic channel catfish. Contribution to Agriculture: These experiments are the first to demonstrate that transgenic fish can increase aquaculture production in the aquaculture production in the aquaculture environment. This research also demonstrated that maximum benefit of gene transfer in farmed fish is attained when combined with traditional selective breeding.

Madrzykowski, Daniel, and Nicholas Dow. Residential Flashover Prevention with Reduced Water Flow: Phase 1. UL Firefighter Safety Research Institute, April 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.54206/102376/jegf7178.

Full text
Abstract:
This study was designed to be an initial step to investigate the potential of low flow nozzles as part of a retrofit flashover prevention system in residential homes with limited water supplies. Not all homes have water supplies that can meet the needs of a residential sprinkler system. Current alter- natives, such as including a supplemental tank and pump, increase the cost of the system. These homes could benefit from an effective fire safety system with lower water supply requirements. The experiments in this study were conducted in a steel test structure which consisted of a fire room attached to a hallway in an L-shaped configuration. Three types of experiments were conducted to evaluate nozzles at different flow rates and under different fire conditions. The performance of the nozzles was compared to the performance of a commercially available residential sprinkler. The first set of experiments measured the distribution of the water spray from each of the nozzles and the sprinkler. The water spray measurements were made without the presence of a fire. The other two sets of experiments were fire experiments. The first set of fire experiments were designed to measure the ability of a water spray to cool a hot gas layer generated by a gas burner fire. The fire source was a propane burner which provided a steady and repeatable flow of heat into the test structure. Two water spray locations were examined, in the fire room and in the middle of the hallway. In each position, the burner was shielded from the water spray. The results showed that for equivalent conditions, the nozzle provided greater gas cooling than the sprinkler. The tests were conducted with a fire size of approximately 110 kW, and water flow rates in the range of 11 lpm (3 gpm) and 19 lpm (5 gpm). The second set of fire experiments used an upholstered sofa as the initial source of the fire with the water spray located in the same room. As a result of the compartment size and water spray distribution, the nozzle flowing water at 23 lpm (6 gpm) provided more effective suppression of the fire than the sprinkler flowing 34 lpm (9 gpm) did. The nozzle was similarly effective with the ignition location moved 1.0 m (3.2 ft) further away. However, the nozzle failed to suppress the fire with a reduced water flow rate of 11 lpm (3 gpm). The results of this limited study demonstrate the potential of low flow nozzles, directly flowing water on to the fuel surface, with the goal of preventing flashover. Additional research is needed to examine larger room sizes, fully furnished rooms, and shielded fires to determine the feasibility of a reduced water flow flashover prevention system.

Ford, Adam T., Marcel Huijser, and Anthony P. Clevenger. Long-term responses of an ecological community to highway mitigation measures. Nevada Department of Transportation, June 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.15788/ndot2022.06.

Full text
Abstract:
In road mitigation systems characterized by multiple wildlife crossing structures (CS) and multiple-focal species, these species-specific design criteria are important to meeting management goals. CS types and locations are fixed in place and cannot be manipulated experimentally; long term studies may offer the best chance to inform evidence-based designs for new CS projects in the future. Long-term data from Banff National Park are uniquely posed to answer these critical questions. More recently, highway mitigation along US93 in Montana provides an additional case study with which to understand the responses of large animals to different CS designs. The purpose of this study is to identify factors affecting movement of large mammals through CS using data sets from both mitigation projects. Year-round monitoring of CS use was used in an analytical framework to address questions regarding species-specific and community level use of CS; design and habitat factors that best explain species-specific variation; and whether importance of design parameters changes over time. Over the 17 years of the Banff study, and the six years of the Montana study, CS facilitated over 200,000 crossing events at 55 locations. There were significant changes in annual crossing events over time. Variables associated with CS passage rates were species specific, but aligned with a few clusters of preference. With the exception of coyotes, all large carnivore species preferred open span bridges or overpasses to other CS types. In Montana, fencing was positively associated with passage rates for black bears and cougars. We found that wider CS tend to be preferred by most species, irrespective of their location. We also found that wider CS tend to have shorter ‘adaptation’ curves than narrower ones for grizzly bears, coyotes, cougars, and moose. Depending on the heterogeneity of the landscape near the highway, more CS may not create more crossing opportunities if local habitat conditions do not favor animals’ access to the road. At the scale of ecological communities, the flows of mass and energy are likely enough to alter the distribution of ecological processes in the Banff and Montana ecosystems. Our results highlight the value of long-term monitoring for assessing the effectiveness of mitigation measures. Our work confirms the species-specific nature of measure CS performance, leading to our primary recommendation that a diversity of CS designs be considered an essential part of a well-designed mitigation system for the large mammals of western North America. Short-term monitoring efforts may fail to accurately portray the ecological benefits of mitigation for populations and ecological communities. Our results will help to inform design and aid in the establishment of robust, long-term performance measures.
