Abstract:
The dynamic development of the Internet and the constant search for new ways of reaching the user bring about the availability of materials that were previously unattainable. Performance art, thanks to its special openness to new methods of expression, reaches the mass media, while showing the individual’s psyche and character of the author’s work. The set of gestures, their sequence and narration are the basis for creating performance art, understood not only as a clear alternative to conventional art, but also characterized by unpredictability, in which the viewer is not prepared for the way messages are received. Undoubtedly, social platforms create an illusion. “The influencer” can reach thousands of viewers and gain fame without leaving home. Without a doubt, social media have created a new entry point to the global art scene, opening way to a wide spectrum of diverse artistic activities. The method of recording, the non-cutaneous nature of the phenomenon makes it possible to own performative actions. The context of a performance is particularly important. It affects what can be universally recognized as art. The question arises (since we distinguish two values of the performative action: in the art gallery and on the street), what frames on the social media allow the audience to interpret it as art, and assuming that it is an art, does it change the perception of a given phenomenon?

Abstract:
This study examines social networks and financial giving to charitable or religious causes. Conventional social capital measures of general social trust and size of social network are studied as predictors of charitable giving. To these traditional measures, we add an examination of particular network aspects of giving: ego giving in relation to network alters who give, solicitations to give by network ties, and ego soliciting alters to give. In addition, the study disaggregates alter effects by alter position. Findings indicate that, net of social trust, social network factors significantly predict likelihood of being a giver. In particular, findings are that egos are especially likely to be donors when their primary alter donates. Three configurations of ego–alter giving and solicitations are significant predictors of ego giving, indicating that ego–alter doing matters more than asking. Theoretical contributions for relational and prosocial studies are discussed, as are practical implications for fundraising professionals.

Abstract:
The study explores how social network determinants relate to the prevalence and frequency of alcohol use among peer dyads. It is studied how similar alcohol habits co-exist among persons (egos) and their peers (alters) when socio-demographic similarity (e.g., in ethnic origin), network composition and other socio-cultural aspects were considered. Data was ego-based responses derived from a Swedish national survey with a cohort of 23-year olds. The analytical sample included 7987 ego-alter pairs, which corresponds to 2071 individuals (egos). A so-called dyadic design was applied i.e., all components of the analysis refer to ego-alter pairs (dyads). Multilevel multinomial-models were used to analyse similarity in alcohol habits in relation to ego-alter similarity in ethnic background, religious beliefs, age, sex, risk-taking, educational level, closure in network, duration, and type of relationship, as well as interactions between ethnicity and central network characteristics. Ego-alter similarity in terms of ethnic origin, age and sex was associated with ego-alter similarity in alcohol use. That both ego and alters were non-religious and were members of closed networks also had an impact on similarity in alcohol habits. It was concluded that network similarity might be an explanation for the co-existence of alcohol use among members of peer networks.

Abstract:
The aim of the project has been to make a flexible table with the ability to change between high and low, and various table tops. This is a functional aspect of variability, but also an emotional element is contained. I want it to be simple for users to express themself  in their table. My intention is that when users can make their own unique table there will be a stronger bond between the artifact and its user. This as a means of sustainability so that the products we own can be used for a longer time, and in this way oppose the unsustainable consumerism culture. The aim of the project has been to make a flexible table with the ability to change between high and low, and various table tops. Covich, Anna-Maria Ruth. "Alter/Ego: Superhero Comic Book Readers, Gender and Identities." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Social and Political Sciences, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/7262.

Full text
Abstract:
The academic study of comic books - especially superhero comic books - has predominantly focused on the analysis of these books as texts, as teaching and learning resources, or on children as comic book readers. Very little has been written about adult superhero comic fans and their responses to superhero comics. This thesis explores how adult comic book readers in New Zealand engage with superhero comics. Individual interviews and group conversations, both online and face-to-face, provide insights into their responses to the comics and the characters as well as the relationships among fans. Analysis of fans’ talk about superhero comics includes their reflections on how masculinities are represented in these comics and the complex ways in which they identify with superheroes, including their alter egos. The thesis examines how superhero comic book readers present themselves in their interactions with other readers. Comics ‘geekdom’, fans’ interactions with one another and their negotiation of gendered norms of masculinity are discussed. The contrast between the fan body and the superhero body is an important theme. Readers’ discursive constitution and management of superheroes’ bodies, and their engagement with representations of superheroes are related to analyses of multiplicity in individual identities and current theories of audience reception and identification.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis illustrates a narrative paradigm consisting of the ego and alter-ego, manifested within the thematic content of Gellman's Concerto for Viola and Orchestra. I invoke contour theory as my primary analytical tool, which I combine with Schenkerian techniques to highlight the possibilities for contour prolongation at the foreground, middleground, and background levels. I support my analysis based on various types and combinations of accent, harmony, and voice leading. Chapter one contains Gellman's biographical information, while chapter 2 provides the methodology of my analytical approach based on the contour models devised by Marvin, Laprade, and Morris. Regarding accent and prolongation, I reference the work of Roeder and Straus, respectively. In chapters three and four, I analyse the first two movements providing a contour/prolongational analysis of the primary thematic material. Chapter five summarises these relationships and investigates the implications for research in the third movement of the Gellman's composition. Vem vill inte vara sig själv [Who Doesn't to be Himself]  opens a discussion on the meaning and function of the alter ego in contemporary culture. In the essay the writer goes back and forth between describing and analyzing the examples he presents, mainly subcultural and media influenced facts and phenomena, and here and there he connects them to personal experiences, among other things the part the alter ego played in his first meeting with art.

Abstract:
Be to, JAE yra naujos rūšies simuliakras, kurio esminiu požymiu galima laikyti vertybiškai svetimos kultūros perėmimą bei pavertimą „sava“, siekiant simbolinio pripažinimo. Šio Emyratų, kaip globalaus pasaulio galios centro, pripažinimo, kuris yra ir šalies modernizacijos katalizatorius, ir nedemokratinio valdančiojo režimo legitimacijos įrankis, siekiama drastiškai aukojant autentiškumą bei kuriant „faraoniškus“ kultūros projektus, kurie šiame darbe laikomi kultūros utopija. Be to, autentiškumo ignoravimas ir Oriento (JAE)... [toliau žr. visą tekstą]
This interdisciplinary Master thesis is a conceptual investigation of power and reality (in a sense of authenticity as well). The following concepts which are hardly distinguishable from each other are analyzed via three theoretical layers – hyperreality, orientalism and the late modernity which works both as a catalyst for these processes and as a logistical tool. The relation between power and reality is revealed not through physical subjugation of the weaker but rather through the attempts to modify reality and with the help of images to create hyperreality that is subordinated to self-interests of the mighty. As the case study the power implicated hyperreality of United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the second modernity that conditioned it has been chosen. Empirical and theoretical analysis reveals that spectacular Emirati cultural objects, illustrated by lexical hyperboles and breath-taking images merely is a simulacra that does not reflect reality or local culture but seeks to alter that reality. Furthermore UAE is a new kind of simulacra characterized by accepting and transforming into “their own” the foreign culture that is alien to the one found within local cultural context in order to obtain symbolic recognition. The symbolic recognition of Emirati as one of the hubs of global power is both the catalyst of Emirati modernization and the instrument of legitimacy of the ruling elite. This recognition is pursued by ‘pharaonic’ cultural objects (cultural utopia) and... [to full text]

Wagner, Guillaume. "Phénoménologie et communauté : du monde de la vie aux formes de vie." Thesis, Strasbourg, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017STRAC016/document.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis engages the question of community in husserlian and post-husserlian phenomenology, concentrating on the concept of the “lifeworld” (Lebenswelt), especially in The Crisis of European Sciences and Transcendental Phenomenology. At the crossroads between two major stages of Husserl’s development, of which we will reveal the implications, we question the lifeworld through the phenomenological analysis of the processes of incorporation and incarnation. We demonstrate that Husserl straightaway surmounted the impasses met by his successors, by refusing an exclusive opposition between the fields of immanence and transcendence in order to, on the contrary, propose their interlacing. Starting with resumption of the radical critique of naturalist objectivism, the stakes are to deepen the forms of intricacy between the ecological sphere and world-horizon. From there, we designate intersubjective praxis as the basis of the dynamics of community formation, which we understand in terms of forms of life

Abstract: Toyo Ito took on the mission of translating Le Corbusier’s mechanistic message for the electronic age at the beginning of the 1980s. He desired to go beyond the reference of the machine only as aesthetic inspiration, as well as to abolish the relationship between form and function, visible in the new digital era. Ito’s domestic experimentation, during the first half of the decade, finally led him to conceive an ‘architecture in simple lines.’ From the Dom-ino Project (1980) to the House in Magomezawa (1986), there is a gentle liberation of the Corbusian formality—based on a society of production—in favor of an architecture without form—in accordance with a society of consumption. The House in Hanakoganei (1983) is as milestone in this evolution, where Ito introduced a series of design techniques that he later implemented in Silver Hut (1984), Pao I (1985), and in the Magomezawa House. These three projects congeal the characteristics that define Ito’s architecture from the middle of the 1980s and, ultimately, give impulse to the ‘domestic adventure of the 80s in Japan,’ that turns its eye to the decorative arts. Toyo Ito’s goal, similar to that of his ‘alter ego’ Le Corbusier six decades earlier, was to design a ‘new architecture’ in harmony with the technological advances of the time, which led him to try the following design strategies: dematerialization, interior-exterior permeability, undefined function, provisionality, formal liberation of the structure, lightness, architecture as a dress, and anti-monumentality. Abstract:
The implementation of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) coolers has recently been a widespread methodology for engine in-cylinder NOX reduction. A common problem with the use of EGR coolers is the tendency for a deposit, or fouling layer to form through thermophoresis. These deposit layers consist of soot and volatiles and reduce the effectiveness of heat exchangers at decreasing exhaust gas outlet temperatures, subsequently increasing engine out NOX emission. This paper presents results from a novel visualization rig that allows for the development of a deposit layer while providing optical and infrared access. A 24-hour, 379 micron thick deposit layer was developed and characterized with an optical microscope, an infrared camera, and a thermogravimetric analyzer. The in-situ thermal conductivity of the deposit layer was calculated to be 0.047 W/mK. Volatiles from the layer were then evaporated off and the layer reanalyzed. Results suggest that volatile bake-out can significantly alter the thermo-physical properties of the deposit layer and hypotheses are presented as to how.

Abstract:
Low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation (LP-EGR) is an EGR configuration in which clean exhaust gas is taken downstream of the turbine and aftertreatment, and then reintroduced upstream of the compressor (1). Employing LP-EGR on Diesel engines can improve fuel economy by reducing pumping losses, lowering intake manifold temperature and facilitating advanced combustion phasing (2, 3). The LP-EGR can also improve compressor and turbine performance by moving their operating points towards higher flow rate and higher efficiency points, which is reflected as a net reduction in pumping losses of the engine. In this study, we focus on effects of introducing LP-EGR on the compressor pressure ratio, and isentropic total-to-total efficiency. The flow field of LP-EGR and air mixing upstream of the compressor as well as the entire compressor stage were studied using a CFD RANS model. The model was validated against turbocharger gas stand measurements. A T-junction mixer was chosen as the design baseline, and various configurations of this mixer were evaluated. The impact of the geometric configuration of the mixer was studied by varying mixing length, EGR jet introduction angle, and EGR-to-air cross section area ratio over a wide range of relevant engine operating conditions. The flow field upstream of the compressor is strongly affected by the dimensionless quantity EGR-to-air momentum ratio. At intermediate momentum ratios, stream-wise counter-rotating vortex pairs (4) are induced in the flow. These vortices can reach the impeller inlet, and depending on vorticity and length scale, perturb the local velocity triangle. At low and high momentum ratios, creeping or impinging jets respectively are formed. In addition prewhirl can be induced by eccentric introduction of EGR. The EGR-induced prewhirl acts similar to an inlet guide vane and can alter the incidence angle at the impeller inlet. The performance of the compressor is altered by the EGR-induced flow field. Compressor pressure ratio is either increased or decreased depending on the direction of EGR-induced prewhirl with eccentric EGR introduction. The compressor efficiency decreases at low flow rates by introduction of concentric EGR due to perturbation of the velocity triangle at the impeller inlet. On the other hand, at low flow rates compressor efficiency can be improved by eccentric EGR introduction, which generates prewhirl in the direction of rotation of the impeller leading to improved incidence angle. The extent to which the compressor is influenced by the EGR-induced flow field is generally reduced by increasing the EGR mixing length, due to viscous damping and breakdown of large-scale EGR-induced vortices. The LP-EGR configuration provides a potential pathway towards improvement of compressor performance, not only by increasing compressor flow rate, but also by manipulation of the flow field. Given that the engine pumping losses are strongly dependent on compressor performance, specifically the compressor efficiency, this study indicates that LP-EGR provides an important path towards reducing pumping loss and improving fuel conversion efficiency.

Abstract:
This paper evaluates the impact of two strategies for reducing CO2 emissions on combustion instabilities in lean-premixed combustion. Exhaust gas recirculation can be utilized to increase the concentration of CO2 in the exhaust stream improving the efficiency in the post-combustion separation plant. This coupled with the use of coal derived syngas or hydrogen augmented natural gas can further decrease CO2 levels released into the environment. However, changes in fuel composition have been shown to alter the dynamic response in lean-premixed combustion systems. In this study, a fully premixed, swirl stabilized, atmospheric burner is operated on various blends of H2/CH4 fuels with N2 and CO2 dilution to simulate EGR. Acoustic pressure and velocity, and global heat release measurements were performed at fixed adiabatic flame temperatures to evaluate the impact of fuel composition and dilution on various mechanisms that drive the instabilities.
