Abstract:
The aim of the project has been to make a flexible table with the ability to change between high and low, and various table tops. This is a functional aspect of variability, but also an emotional element is contained. I want it to be simple for users to express themself  in their table. My intention is that when users can make their own unique table there will be a stronger bond between the artifact and its user. This as a means of sustainability so that the products we own can be used for a longer time, and in this way oppose the unsustainable consumerism culture. The aim of the project has been to make a flexible table with the ability to change between high and low, and various table tops. Covich, Anna-Maria Ruth. "Alter/Ego: Superhero Comic Book Readers, Gender and Identities." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Social and Political Sciences, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/7262.

Full text
Abstract:
The academic study of comic books - especially superhero comic books - has predominantly focused on the analysis of these books as texts, as teaching and learning resources, or on children as comic book readers. Very little has been written about adult superhero comic fans and their responses to superhero comics. This thesis explores how adult comic book readers in New Zealand engage with superhero comics. Individual interviews and group conversations, both online and face-to-face, provide insights into their responses to the comics and the characters as well as the relationships among fans. Analysis of fans’ talk about superhero comics includes their reflections on how masculinities are represented in these comics and the complex ways in which they identify with superheroes, including their alter egos. The thesis examines how superhero comic book readers present themselves in their interactions with other readers. Comics ‘geekdom’, fans’ interactions with one another and their negotiation of gendered norms of masculinity are discussed. The contrast between the fan body and the superhero body is an important theme. Readers’ discursive constitution and management of superheroes’ bodies, and their engagement with representations of superheroes are related to analyses of multiplicity in individual identities and current theories of audience reception and identification.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis illustrates a narrative paradigm consisting of the ego and alter-ego, manifested within the thematic content of Gellman's Concerto for Viola and Orchestra. I invoke contour theory as my primary analytical tool, which I combine with Schenkerian techniques to highlight the possibilities for contour prolongation at the foreground, middleground, and background levels. I support my analysis based on various types and combinations of accent, harmony, and voice leading. Chapter one contains Gellman's biographical information, while chapter 2 provides the methodology of my analytical approach based on the contour models devised by Marvin, Laprade, and Morris. Regarding accent and prolongation, I reference the work of Roeder and Straus, respectively. In chapters three and four, I analyse the first two movements providing a contour/prolongational analysis of the primary thematic material. Chapter five summarises these relationships and investigates the implications for research in the third movement of the Gellman's composition. Be to, JAE yra naujos rūšies simuliakras, kurio esminiu požymiu galima laikyti vertybiškai svetimos kultūros perėmimą bei pavertimą „sava“, siekiant simbolinio pripažinimo. Šio Emyratų, kaip globalaus pasaulio galios centro, pripažinimo, kuris yra ir šalies modernizacijos katalizatorius, ir nedemokratinio valdančiojo režimo legitimacijos įrankis, siekiama drastiškai aukojant autentiškumą bei kuriant „faraoniškus“ kultūros projektus, kurie šiame darbe laikomi kultūros utopija. This interdisciplinary Master thesis is a conceptual investigation of power and reality (in a sense of authenticity as well). The following concepts which are hardly distinguishable from each other are analyzed via three theoretical layers – hyperreality, orientalism and the late modernity which works both as a catalyst for these processes and as a logistical tool. The relation between power and reality is revealed not through physical subjugation of the weaker but rather through the attempts to modify reality and with the help of images to create hyperreality that is subordinated to self-interests of the mighty. As the case study the power implicated hyperreality of United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the second modernity that conditioned it has been chosen. Empirical and theoretical analysis reveals that spectacular Emirati cultural objects, illustrated by lexical hyperboles and breath-taking images merely is a simulacra that does not reflect reality or local culture but seeks to alter that reality. Furthermore UAE is a new kind of simulacra characterized by accepting and transforming into “their own” the foreign culture that is alien to the one found within local cultural context in order to obtain symbolic recognition. The symbolic recognition of Emirati as one of the hubs of global power is both the catalyst of Emirati modernization and the instrument of legitimacy of the ruling elite. This recognition is pursued by ‘pharaonic’ cultural objects (cultural utopia) and... [to full text]

Wagner, Guillaume. Thesis, Strasbourg, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017STRAC016/document.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis engages the question of community in husserlian and post-husserlian phenomenology, concentrating on the concept of the “lifeworld” (Lebenswelt), especially in The Crisis of European Sciences and Transcendental Phenomenology. At the crossroads between two major stages of Husserl’s development, of which we will reveal the implications, we question the lifeworld through the phenomenological analysis of the processes of incorporation and incarnation. We demonstrate that Husserl straightaway surmounted the impasses met by his successors, by refusing an exclusive opposition between the fields of immanence and transcendence in order to, on the contrary, propose their interlacing. Starting with resumption of the radical critique of naturalist objectivism, the stakes are to deepen the forms of intricacy between the ecological sphere and world-horizon. From there, we designate intersubjective praxis as the basis of the dynamics of community formation, which we understand in terms of forms of life

Barker, Georgina Frances. "Russia's classical alter ego, 1963-2016 : classical reception in the poetry of Elena Shvarts, Il’ia Kutik, and Polina Barskova." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/22965.

Full text
Abstract:
Classical reception, suppressed under Stalin, returned to Soviet poetry during the Thaw (c. 1953-63), and through the many political upheavals of the late twentieth century it has remained a prominent trend in contemporary Russian poetry. This thesis explores classical reception in the oeuvres of Elena Shvarts, Il’ia Kutik, and Polina Barskova, whose poetry spans from 1963 to the present. They form part of – and serve as case studies for – the wider trend of late- and post-Soviet poetic engagement with classical antiquity. This phenomenon has been studied in the cases of Thaw poets Iosif Brodskii and, to a lesser extent, Aleksandr Kushner, but investigations have not extended beyond these figures to the succeeding Stagnation and post-Soviet poets. Shvarts, Kutik, and Barskova come from different generations and different poetic schools, and have very different poetic styles. They share a sustained and playful engagement with the literature and history of Ancient Greece and Rome, which is often in dialogue with earlier Russian receptions of classical antiquity. Their classical reception is frequently intended to ‘estrange’ Soviet/Russian contexts, thus making antiquity an ‘alter ego’ of Russia. This objective is facilitated – and inspired – by the Russian literary tradition. Since its inception Russian literature has set classical antiquity before itself as a model, imitating its literary forms and emulating its characters. This long-standing analogy between Russia and the classical world underpins Shvarts, Kutik, and Barskova’s evocations of classical antiquity as Russia’s alter ego. The utility of the classical alter ego lies precisely in its alterity: as well as a vehicle for veiled dissidence, as with Aesopian speech, it can be a more extreme, or fun, or ideal reality. Inherent in Shvarts, Kutik, and Barskova’s recourse to classical reception as alter ego is a desire to connect with Europe, from which Russians were palpably divided for much of the twentieth century – the Mandel’shtamian ‘yearning for world culture’. It stems also from their desire to connect with pre-Soviet (classically receptive) Russian literature. The thesis begins with a history of classical reception in Russian literature from Russia’s first contact with the classical world up to the present. Such a history is crucial to understanding contemporary poets’ classical reception, as so many of their references to classical antiquity are refracted through Russian intertexts. The chapters on Shvarts, Kutik, and Barskova examine the entire oeuvre (to date) of each poet, selecting key poems and themes for close analysis. This is conducted alongside the intertexts (quotations from classical texts are given in English only, except where the original language has demonstrably informed reception). As well as literary contexts, historical and personal contexts are considered. Interviews conducted by the author with both living poets (Kutik and Barskova) inform the analysis. This thesis contends that the pervasive classical reception evident in Russian poetry from 1953 to the present responds to the series of ontological crises Russia was precipitated into by the upheavals of the twentieth century. With the loosening of Socialist Realism’s control over literature after Stalin, Russian poets resume Russia’s poetic tradition of using classical antiquity as an alter ego, both to heighten portrayals of Russia, and to imagine another, alternate, Russia.

Abstract:
As a child growing up, I was always in love with the ritual of “dress up”. Whether it was my dolls, various reluctant pets, or myself, it was always an activity I loved. It is not surprising then that adornment has become the medium through which I express myself and bring my fantasy world to life. Jewelry and accessory have the potential to lead many lives. One particular piece can change entirely by putting it on one body as opposed to another, or by removing it to see it as an object. In fashion, the body is the canvas and the runway becomes the moment of performance. My work uses the body in much the same way where the wearer becomes performer. Through this act, we construct personal forms of armor, or “power suits”, to face the battlefield of the outside world. In harnessing this act of adorning and what it encompasses, I am consistently challenged as both designer and maker. Creating alter egos, whether subtly flirtatious or overtly sexual, demure or flamboyant, are some of the many ways in which these “power suits” can be concocted. The stories we project about ourselves daily, through how we adorn our naked bodies, become empowering. Myths versus reality, ascetic versus sensual, and beautiful versus ugly are some of the concepts from which I draw inspiration. These dualities are conceptually expressed in my work through physical combinations of opposing materials. Mixing mediums, through methods such as collaging, beading, needlepointing, knitting, and sewing, are integral in my designs. With alternative materials, such as feathers, textiles, and yarns, I add softness and new scintillating sensations when juxtaposed with the hard, cold qualities of metal. Through combining such materials, I construct pieces that not only challenge one’s notion of what “pretty” is, but also inspire the way one thinks about body adornment. The objects I create become vessels that actualize the dualities I strive to express. In producing hybrids of materials, my need to explore these dichotomies is satisfied.

Abstract:

Seedall, Ryan B. "Conjoint Marital Therapy: Proxy Voice Intervention and Softening in the Context of Couple Enactments." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2004. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/638.

Full text
Abstract:
This study evaluated the effectiveness of proxy voice intervention, embedded within couple enactments, on client-perceived softening. During enactments, direct couple interaction is the focus while the therapist coaches from the periphery. In the context of an enactment, the therapist may use proxy voice when partners appear to be distressed and expressing themselves in terms of secondary emotions by modeling appropriate attachment and self-concept expression. The primary research question was whether therapist use of proxy voice in an enactment would be more likely to bring about softening effects, or whether use of proxy voice was counter-intuitive to enactment conceptualization and would bring about effects related to struggle (e.g. withdrawal or negativity). The review of literature sets forth (1) enactments as common factors; (2) enactments conceptually and operationally; (3) proxy voice in the context of enactments; and (4) the effects of proxy voice on softening versus withdrawal or negativity. Proxy voice occurred 42 times in nine research sessions where proxy voice was delivered repeatedly in a 20-30 minute enactment episode. Results indicated that proxy voice was significantly (both statistically and clinically) associated to softening while dissimilarly linked with withdrawal or negativity. Results also suggested that proxy voice may be used to dampen volatility and foster couple softening during enactment in the following ways: (1) proxy voice temporarily increases the structure of the couple interaction, thereby allowing the therapist to dampen reactivity and model healthy expression before returning to direct couple interaction; (2) proxy voice is a hypothesis of softer emotions that fits the clients' experiences, helps them to feel validated, and encourages them to consider something in a newer, softer way; and (3) proxy voice taps into foundational relationship dynamics surrounding self-concept and attachment experiences that "propel" interaction processes but remain outside conscious awareness or explicit expression for the couple. These preliminary findings suggest that proxy voice intervention embedded within a fluid, carefully delineated, and discriminating model of enactments effectively facilitates essential elements of couple interaction (expression of primary affect, and self-concept and attachment threats) while promoting self-reliant couple interaction and increased couple softening.

Abstract:

Thesis, Lyon 2, 2011. http://www.theses.fr/2011LYO20110/document.

Abstract:
The purpose of this dissertation is to study the influences of the norm on the representations of friendship and its practice in France during the 16th and the 17th centuries. The corpus draws aside both intellectuals and women to focus on the non-enclosed people. How two individuals are able to make friends with each other in the 16th and 17th centuries within a society itself thought in terms of friendship? This dissertation divides in two volumes. The first one is devoted to the study itself. The philosophical inheritance is presented, along with considerations on bonds linking the friend, the society, the couple and the family during the Modern Times. Questions of linguistics are also raised. The evolution of a friendship between two men is followed step by step from birth to death, as if it were a genuine living organism. Gestures and tokens of friendship are the bases of friendship. The latter is always endangered by the fragile balance between the social demands and the requirements of friendship. In the second volume are presented the methodology used to gather the documentary corpus, as well as our historical sources and bibliography. Reasons why women were excluded from our research work make the core of a specific chapter

Stafford, Rowan Bell. "A legal-comparative study of the interpretation and application of the doctrines of the sham and the alter-ego in the context of South African trust law: the dangers of translocating company law principles into trust law." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1003210.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis analyses the doctrines of the sham and the alter-ego and their application to the law of trusts in South Africa. Following an initial examination of the historical development of the law of trusts in English law and the principles of equity law, the study focuses on the current legal status of the trust inter vivos in South Africa and the similarities to its English forerunner. The work traces the sham doctrine back to its origins in English law, where the term “sham” was first used in the context of fraud and dishonesty in cases involving matters arising from hire-purchase agreements, and explains how it gradually began to find its place in the law of trusts. During the exploration, the work highlights the cornerstone of the sham doctrine’s development, the Snook test, which in effect became the internationally accepted guideline for any sham trust enquiry. In terms of the alter-ego doctrine, the work highlights the birth of the principle in Australian law and the doctrine’s immediate reception into other common law jurisdictions and its resultant development. The growth, maturity and popularity of the doctrines are key to the thesis and, in the course of the investigation, the study provides a legal-comparative analysis of the treatment of the doctrines in the context of trusts against that in other common law countries. The study then shifts its focus to South Africa’s interpretation and application of these doctrines in trust law, and reveals the erroneous judicial development in which the courts have in some instances mistakenly replaced the sham doctrine with the company law doctrine of piercing the corporate veil or, in other instances, have erroneously conflated the two trust doctrines. The results highlight a breach of a fundamental rule observed overseas – the “no half way house” rule, which specifically cautions against South Africa’s chosen direction when allowing the lifting of a trust’s veil. The study closes with suggestions as to how the country could reconcile the problems underlined in the thesis by means of law reform, as well as offering practical advice for settlors, trustees and beneficiaries, the core of which is given in the handbook that accompanies this thesis.

A discussão acerca do gênero textual envolve Biografia, Autobiografia, Retrato, Confissão, Diário, Ensaio. _______________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT
This dissertation addresses issues concerning Joyce’s writing. The conceptual persona Stephen Dedalus undertakes the writing of the text and acts as an artificer, letting the text work issues such as aspects of its creation, a certain trait of hospitality, its consequences and reflections on genre. Derrida’s hospitality, which is also discussed from the standpoint of translation, is revealed as a conceptual opening up. At this point the cyclical text-reader-text relationship and the laws governing it are then discussed. The discussion on genre involves Biography, Autobiography, Portrait, Confession, Diary, Essay; all the possible pacts readerauthor- text, and then the biographical pact and biographical space. Finally, the issues of criation converse with Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari on the plane of immanence, composition and what matters most importantly, Stephen Dedalus as a conceptual persona.

Abstract:
The subject of this thesis concerns the Ottieriâ s literary work from his first novel Memorie dellâ incoscienza (1954) to Una irata sensazione di peggioramento (2002), analysing three themes which come over his poetry: industry, sanatorium and politics. The thesis is planned on seven chapters. In the introduction, the characteristics of Ottieriâ s novels are developed: original and unclassifiable, Ottieri has organized an extensive literary project through thirty works connected by a continuous plot of themes and leitmotivs which are linked on different subject as Italian and European literature, history, psychiatry, art, politics. In the first chapter, the Ottieriâ s youthful devotion to fascism is analysed in the light of his own memories (Memorie dellâ incoscienza), an autobiographic novel in which an alter ego (Lorenzo Bandini) analyses the dramatic issues of Italy during the Second World War. In the second chapter the emergent theme concerns the industrial world through four works (two novels: Tempi stretti and Donnarumma allâ assalto, the diary La linea gotica and the play I venditori di Milano) which allow him to be the â pioneerâ of Italian industrial literature. From the third to the fifth chapter, the principal theme which comes over is mental illness; depression, schizophrenia, alienation are bound to be the centre of his literary works and not only of his life. The sixth chapter studies two novels, La storia del PSI and Il poema osceno, which are the summary of his political ideas. The seventh chapter is about the last works of Ottieri; aware of his imminent death, the poet describes his life as a borderline individual and as an unsuccessful writer.

Abstract:
In France, biography was said to be close to its death at the end of the twentieth century, but J.-B. Pontalis and other editors helped promoting its renewal. Biographical relationship is being explored by L’un et l’autre under the focus of fatherhood, motherhood and care. These topics are less things than words, they belong to literature and language, and to a peculiar language. L’un et l’autre reflects the literary work of J.-B. Pontalis : one had an impact on the other and then the other way round. This is true for the human, animal and objectal topics which are spread throughout L’un et l’autre and may be called variorum of otherness. The other being or the other thing might be brother, sister, place or time, the last one referring especially to the Holocaust. In L’un et l’autre as well as in the work of Pontalis, the writer may find his alter ego in a painter or a musician, words can become pictures or tunes. Nevertheless the best mirror for a writer, and a biographer is a writer indeed, is another writer. More and more, the books edited by J.-B. Pontalis evolved from biography of the other towards biography of the self, following thus the late work of Pontalis as a writer. During the late life and after the death of J.-B. Pontalis, a « autographic » way of writing was born, the widespread topics of which show that french literature performed and still performs a comeback towards its second self : life

Komulainen, K. (Kauko). "Ihanteiden Ikaros:Markku Lahtelan Se-romaani ja 1960-luvun representaation kriisi." Doctoral thesis, University of Oulu, 2009. http://urn.fi/urn:isbn:9789514290107.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The author Markku Lahtela was a central figure in the 1960’s generation rebellion, called the spirit of the 60’s, that criticised the basic values of the old generation and through which the young artists presented their avant-garde ideas. The study focuses on the early 1960’s. The primary data is provided by Lahtela’s second novel called Se and its manuscript. The novel deals in an original way with issues such as the sexual revolution and sexual morality, which were popular themes in the 1960’s. As a secondary source of data, the study also deals to some extent with the rest of Lahtela’s production. The substantial topic is the problematics of change in the 1960’s that arose as a result of modernisation, which only then gained momentum in Finland. The research approach is contextual in that the discussion is based on the postmodern viewpoint. Context is understood as consisting of elements of cultural dialogicality thematised by the author through individuation, which is to be seen in the dialogue of his books. The study focuses on the extraliterary historical context. Among the contexts of the 1960’s, attention is paid mainly to the crisis of representation caused by the changes, by interpreting its commentary and attempts to solve it in Lahtela’s texts. Despite the focus on the extraliterary historical context, textual dimensions are also taken into account in the interpretations. I also discuss to some extent the conditions through which it is possible in literary research to find intermediate standpoints to overcome the opposition between textuality and reality. In the interpretation of the extra- and intraliterary dialogues in Lahtela’s texts, the tools used include the alter ego, the textual “I” and, in neutral cases, the narrator. The novel Se not only participated in topical cultural and literary dialogue, but also reformed Finnish prose by representing autobiographical materials in a fragmentary and fictitious manner. The discussion also shows that Freudian psychoanalysis has contributed significantly to both Se and Lahtela’s production in general. The same also applies to Friedrich Nietzsche’s philosophy of life; some of his ideas have directed the discussion of moral issues characterised by Lahtela’s books and the search for an alternative (sexual) morality
Tiivistelmä Kirjailija Markku Lahtela oli keskeinen hahmo vanhan polven perusarvoja arvostelleessa 1960-luvun sukupolvikapinassa, jota nimitettiin 60-lukulaisuudeksi ja jossa nuoret taiteilijat esittelivät avantgardistisia ideoitaan. Tutkimuksen ajallinen pääkohde on 1960-luvun alkupuoli. Tutkimuksessani korostuu ulkokirjallinen historiallinen konteksti.

Abstract:
The ecology behind evolutionary diversification is a well studied area of research, whereas the effects of evolution on ecosystems get little attention. In line with ecological theory, evolutionary diversification of a species could influence different ecosystem aspects such as food web composition, energy flow, nutrient cycling etc. The main objective of this study was to investigate whether two diverging ecotypes (reed and chara) of Asellus aquaticus differ regarding their role in two aquatic ecosystem processes: decomposition of terrestrial leaves and grazing of periphyton. Their role in ecosystem process as well as treatment effects on fitness, measured as growth and survival, were investigated in a laboratory experiment with various levels of intra-specific competition and inter-specific interactions with the amphipod Gammarus pulex. The isopods were collected from two Swedish lakes: Lake Tåkern and Lake Fardume. These two lakes represent different history of ecotype divergence. The experimental design consisted of 2-L aquaria, each providing elm leaves (Ulmus glabra), oak leaves (Quercus roburleaves) and periphyton as food sources. Ten treatments with five replicates were applied for each lake and the experiment lasted for four weeks. The study showed that there was no significant difference between chara and reed ecotype in their functional role. However, the rate of ecosystem processes per individual decreased in competitive interactions. In high density, decomposition per dry weight consumer was low and total algae biomass was high at the end of four weeks due to intra-specific competition. Moreover, ecosystem processes were lowest in inter-specific competition between Gammarus pulex and each ecotype. Present study also shows that ecotypes from the different lakes, having different history, had different responses to mortality and growth.

Abstract:
SCH-64874 (5) is a fungal metabolite that inhibits the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), a high-profile oncology target, with an IC50 of 1.0µg/mL. It is of particular interest because it is unlikely to inhibit the protein’s intramolecular kinase domain (as typical chemical EGFR inhibitors do), and may act instead by obstructing the receptor’s ligand binding and/or dimerisation processes.
In this work, the epipolythiodiketopiperazine family of natural products is reviewed, leading to a discussion of the probable biosynthetic pathways by which these complex molecules are produced in nature. A laboratory synthesis based on this proposed biosynthesis was subsequently proposed and undertaken.
The oxidation of aromatic systems was investigated, which led to the synthesis, for the first time, of complex functionalised arene oxides such as 178. The regioselective epoxidation of 178 was accessed by derivatisation as the Diels-Alder adduct 180. Subsequent epoxidation and manipulation led to the amino alcohol 195b, possessing the exo-epoxide endo-alcohol stereochemistry shown.
This stereochemical assignment was based on detailed NMR analysis of the product, and also on AM1 semi-empirical molecular modelling and Ab initio molecular orbital calculations, which were used to evaluate the relative stabilities of the cyclisation products.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
This mini-dissertation is aimed at analysing the requirements the court takes into consideration when deciding to pierce a trust veil in either insolvency or divorce matters. A clear exposition of the legal nature of a trust is provided to determine how a trust affords the extensive protection to trust assets, the very characteristic that makes it as popular as it is today. It is due to this protection of trust assets that a trust has become the object of abuse by founders and trustees, and the court has felt it necessary to introduce a remedy. In Badenhorst v Badenhorst the court stated that the company law doctrine of piercing the veil should be extended to trust law. Some authors criticised this judgement, and arguments pro(for) the extension is included in the conclusion. The research explored the circumstances that warrants the piercing of a trust veil and it was found that the court is likely to pierce a trust veil if the trust form was abused. The study then shifts its focus to the type of abuse the court seeks to remedy. A trust can amount to be the alter ego of a person or a court can deem a trust to be a sham. The research investigates the distinction between the two in depth, and the resultant finding is that only alter ego trusts will be pierced by a court, since a sham trust means that no valid trust has in fact been formed and therefore there is no veil to pierce. Often the courts are confused by the two and the likelyhood of a trust being labelled a sham by South African courts are slim. To find that a trust was abused, the courts will look at the essential requirements of forming a trust to determine the validity. The most important factors that the court considers when deciding to pierce the veil, is the type of control over the trust assets and the intention with which the trust is created or kept. An extensive analysis of the Companies Act and the doctrine of piercing the veil was done to probe their compatability with trust law and to see if the remedy is in fact effective and correctly applied. Case law to support the court‘s view and application of the mentioned doctrine is discussed and evaluated. The study closes with an evaluation of the procedure of piercing the veil and the consequences following such piercing, as well as the arguments for allowing piercing of a trust veil to force trust users to obey the basic trust idea of separation of enjoyment from control.

Full text
Abstract:
In Punch-Drunk Love (2002), Paul Thomas Anderson applies a unique creative process that reveals the very inner workings of enunciation in the film. His filmic approach functions to distance the spectator from the film and, to various degrees, challenges the spectator to question the codes that create an aesthetic of illusion. Drawing on Christian Metz’s abstract approach to enunciation, this thesis proposes to analyse the filmic enunciation of Anderson’s film. By means of this theoretical approach, we become aware that the enunciation of the film stimulates the spectator into realizing that the implied meaning of the enunciation is one that can be understood within its own self. The “who” and the “what” are no longer questions that are answered from the “outside”. The “who” is the film and the “what” resides in it. What we are observing is the self–reflexive nature of enunciation.

Abstract:
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
Abstract: In the beginning of the last century’s 70’s decade, David Bowie released a conceptual album, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, about an alien who came to earth to bring salvation. To make is concerts more appealing in an esthetic point of view and to overcome his own shyness when he presented himself on stage, Bowie created the alter-ego Ziggy Stardust. The path laid down by the singer in this stage of his artistic career can be compared to the one led by Dr. Jekyll, the main character of the literary work of Robert Louis Stevenson, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The doctor and the singer developed alter-egos which, initially, helped them to achieve their goals. Bowie performed unique shows, presenting himself in a distinctively irreverent way for that time and Dr. Jekyll gave wings to his desire to break the moral convention codes of the Victorian times. By the present dissertation, it is our aim to establish the parallel between the life experiences of the singer and Stevenson’s character, regarding their relation with the alter-ego, the way they both dealt with them, the drug consumption and the consequences to their personalities

Abstract:
The dissertation aims at showing the differences in dealing with the death issue in characteristic works of art of both Czech and world literature. Above all, it pursues the comparison of two novels Život střídá smrt ("Life Becomes Death") by Petr Prouza and Nebe nemá dno ("Heaven is Bottomless") by Hana Andronikova. Both unique books belong to key Czech novels with the topic of death. Moreover, both of them deal with death from the point of personal experience, which means they are strongly autobiographical. The dissertation concentrates on creative processes and topical aspects, grasps autobiographical elements of both novels and all the identities and differences in the approach to the same topic. Therefore, the dissertation is devoted to listing the works of art dealing with death, further on to the analyses, interpretation and comparison of the novels Život střídá smrt ("Life Becomes Death") and Nebe nemá dno ("Heaven is Bottomless") together with the reflexion of reader's experience.
