Abstract:

En español, la alternancia predicativa (tener granos en la cara / tener la cara con granos) difiere de la alternancia locativa (cargar el heno en el camión / cargar el camión con heno) en tres aspectos relevantes: (i) argumentos verbales, (ii) estructura eventiva y (iii) relación semántica entre el significado verbal de la variante de locado y el significado verbal en la variante de locación. Por otra parte, el tipo de construcciones propio de la alternancia predicativa no solo se combina con verbos estativos, sino también con verbos aspectualmente dinámicos, incluidos los más representativos de la alternancia locativa. En conclusión, sostenemos que la alternancia predicativa constituye un tipo de diátesis verbal distinto e independiente de la alternancia locativa.

Abstract:

Con el objetivo de caracterizar el funcionamiento sincrónico del marcador deverbal "mira" en muestras pertenecientes al español coloquial europeo —extensibles al español estándar—, este artículo examina las distintas propiedades discursivas, gramaticales, semánticas, prosódicas y pragmáticas a partir de los siguientes criterios: significado procedimental adquirido, existencia/inexistencia de rasgos verbales, dependencia/independencia prosódica y sintáctica, grado de fosilización, posición, estructura informativa, tipo de intervención, alternancia/no alternancia con la variante "mire" y paráfrasis con ciertos marcadores verbales —fosilizados y no fosilizados— u otros conversacionales sin ese origen verbal. Los resultados indican que es posible distinguir una gramaticalización parcial o completa. En la primera, ese proceso no ha culminado y el marcador puede actuar, en una fase intermedia, como conector interactivo, y, en otra avanzada, como conector intensificativo. Cuando ese proceso se ha completado, "mira" se desprende de sus rasgos verbales y se comporta como un operador de respuesta si adquiere un valor interjectivo o como un operador intensificativo cuando ejerce la función de un cuantificador externo que incide sobre el adjetivo. With the aim of characterizing the synchronous functioning of the deverbal marker "mira" in samples belonging to colloquial European Spanish—extensible to standard Spanish—, this article examines the various discursive, grammatical, semantic, prosodic, and pragmatic properties based on the following criteria: acquired procedural meaning, existence/non-existence of verbal features, prosodic and syntactic dependence/independence, degree of fossilization, position, informational structure, type of intervention, alternation/non-alternation with the variant "mire" and paraphrasing with certain verbal markers—both fossilized and non-fossilized—or other conversational markers without that verbal origin. The results indicate that it is possible to distinguish between partial or complete grammaticalization. In the former, this process has not concluded, and the marker can act, in an intermediate phase, as an interactive connector, and, in a more advanced phase, as an intensifying connector. When this process is complete, "mira" sheds its verbal features and behaves as a response operator if it acquires an interjective value or as an intensifying operator when it functions as an external quantifier affecting the adjective.

El estudio se centra en el componente verbal de las construcciones indefinidas con dar la gana y dar gana. Los resultados apuntan a que dar la gana se expandió morfológicamente a otros tiempos verbales; mientras que dar gana presenta en el español contemporáneo un descenso en los tiempos verbales en los que aparece. Se concluye que la primera se fijó en las construcciones indefinidas volviéndose productiva, y la segunda no. Asimismo, en los resultados se observa una alternancia entre el indicativo y el subjuntivo. El hecho se asocia a la distinción entre específico y no específico.

Le rôle de la langue maternelle en cours de langue seconde constitue de fait un objet d’étude plus important qu’auparavant. D’autres recherches ont été menées pour « cerner les échanges verbaux entre deux ou plusieurs personnes amenées à rédiger ensemble un même texte (Miled, 1998 : 98) ». En étudiant la rédaction conversationnelle d’un texte argumentatif par deux étudiantes du premier cycle universitaire, nous focalisons notre analyse, par le biais d’une approche descriptive, sur l’effet des alternances codiques sur les interactions verbales et donc sur le déroulement de la tâche d’écriture. Abstract The role of native language in the second language courses represent in fact a more important object of study than before, other research were undertaken to ‘’ identify verbal exchanges between two or many persons brought to write together the same text ( Miled, 1998:98)’’. By studying conversational writing of an argumentative text by two undergraduate students, we focus our analyses through a descriptive approach, on the effect of codic alternations on verbal interactions and therefore on the progress of the writing tasks.

Cette contribution examine l’apport sémantique de la préposition à dans les cas d’alternance des verbes contredire, parer, satisfaire, toucher et viser. Ces verbes peuvent se construire soit avec un objet direct soit avec un objet indirect introduit par la préposition à. S’inscrivant dans le cadre théorique de la Grammaire Cognitive définie par Langacker (2008), cette étude montre que la différence de sens observée entre la construction directe et indirecte du verbe peut être attribuée au sémantisme abstrait de la préposition à : l’expression d’un but abstrait pour parer et viser, l’expression d’une localisation abstraite pour contredire et satisfaire et les deux sens pour le verbe polysémique toucher.

En este trabajo se estudia el comportamiento de las formas plenas de los posesivos (mío, tuyo, suyo) que en el español rioplatense y venezolano alternan con argumentos verbales preposicionales (se acuerda de mí ~ se acuerda mío). A partir de una muestra de 1173 verbos, se identificaron en Twitter 164 predicados que admiten el complemento posesivo (CPos) con función argumental. Dichos posesivos tónicos tienen en común el hecho de alternar con el complemento de régimen preposicional (CR), bajo la forma preposición + pronombre personal, y de expresarse con el género no marcado en la primera, segunda y tercera persona del singular. Además de admitir un argumento interno preposicional, los verbos que participan en la alternancia CR ~ CPos designan, en su mayoría, procesos mentales, en los que pueden participar complementos argumentales con rasgos de persona. Los posesivos no solo satisfacen esta condición deíctica, sino también la relacional, un rasgo compartido con la preposición de caso genitivo de, con el que suele alternar. Los datos permiten comprobar, además, que el fenómeno se extiende a predicados que seleccionan complementos introducidos por a y en, si bien dentro del ámbito del CR. Se señalan, como posibles factores de extensión analógica, la alternancia preposicional (de ~ en) y el contenido léxico de los predicados.

Résumé Dans cet article, nous abordons l’analyse d’une variété de processus faisant partie de la morphologie verbale de l’arabe marocain (AM). Notre analyse s’inscrit dans le cadre théorique du gouvernement et du charme (Kaye, Lowenstamm et Vergnaud, 1985). Un des objectifs de cette théorie et de notre analyse est de montrer qu’une règle arbitraire n’est pas le moyen le plus efficace pour l’expression de beaucoup de phénomènes phonologiques. À notre avis, ces phénomènes peuvent être déduits à partir de l’interaction de principes universaux avec les valeurs paramétriques de la langue en question. En particulier, nous montrons que la structure syllabique de l’AM ainsi que la nature de son système vocalique rend compte d’une variété impressionnante de phénomènes observés dans cette langue : épenthèse et syncope, des alternances voyelle haute - semi-voyelle, dégémination, etc.

O presente trabalho tem por objetivo identificar e analisar o uso corrente de formas verbais em enunciados nos quais a expectativa de uso seria de formas do presente do subjuntivo, mas, efetivamente, acabam sendo produzidas outras formas morfológicas. Tal expectativa baseia-se na distinção dos modos, considerando que o indicativo mostra, em geral, posicionamento de certeza do falante em relação a seu dizer e o modo subjuntivo revela um posicionamento de incerteza. Limitamos nossa análise às formas verbais do indicativo e do subjuntivo no tempo presente. Os dados apresentados são todos registros de fala de indivíduos em situação não monitoradas, ou seja, são fragmentos de conversas espontâneas. Para quem tem uma expectativa de uso, nos enunciados da língua, de formas verbais ora no presente do indicativo, ora no presente do subjuntivo, a escuta de enunciados registrando o presente do indicativo, por exemplo, em substituição ao presente do subjuntivo chama a atenção. A troca, em alguns registros de fala, é respaldada pelo conteúdo semântico do verbo e/ou por formas adverbiais em coocorrência com o verbo no presente do indicativo. Mas não se limita a essas possibilidades.r

El objetivo de este trabajo es ofrecer una descripción gramatical exhaustiva para un conjunto de construcciones formadas por un verbo y un SP subcategorizado encabezado por la preposición con (e.g. discutir con). Concretamente, nuestra propuesta se centra en estudiar y describir de un modo más preciso los diferentes SSPP (con) que acompañan a verbos, según puedan considerarse Argumentos o Predicados y, más excepcionalmente, Adjuntos. Para ello empleamos una metodología descriptivista que permita incorporar herramientas teóricas de corte formal al análisis de dichas construcciones, más especialmente la posibilidad de configurar cláusulas reducidas a partir del contraste SP (con/sin). Los resultados de esta descripción y su correspondiente análisis tienen su reflejo en una clasificación de expresiones encabezadas por la preposición con que toma como base caracterizadora las particularidades léxico-sintácticas de los núcleos verbales a los que se asocian. En este sentido, hemos querido discriminar el estatus sintáctico de los distintos SSPP (con) en función de su naturaleza subcategorizada o no seleccionada, distinción que pondrá el foco en aquellas que constituyen un argumento regido o expresan ´estado`/´situación`. Así, también formarán parte de este paradigma clasificatorio verbos que seleccionan régimen alterno (a partir de SSPP (con) y CD/CI) y otros que alternan sintagmas preposicionales encabezados por a/con. Finalmente, han sido incluidos usos que presentan alternancia verbal y adjetival, lo que permite establecer interesantes contrastes en relación con la selección argumental que ejercen verbos y adjetivos como simpatizar/simpático sobre SSPP (con). Del mismo modo, verbos terminativos y verbos no subcategorizadores de régimen ofrecen asociaciones gramaticales opuestas respecto de la aparición de sintagmas encabezados por con. En definitiva, con este estudio pretendemos ofrecer una clasificación léxico-sintáctica de verbos que se combinan con SSPP (con) que tenga en cuenta no solo el significado conceptual del verbo, sino también su Estructura Argumental, su comportamiento sintáctico y el estatus léxico-sintáctico del SP, así como las posibles alternancias preposicionales.

Abstract:

Notre étude vise à décrire l’influence du type de sujet et de sa saillance phonologique sur la morphologie des verbes alternants au pluriel dans l’interlangue française d’apprenants germanophones, italophones et suédophones. Elle se situe dans la suite des travaux de Nadasdi (2001), Howard (2006) et Michot (2014), qui avaient respectivement creusé la question dans des corpus FL2 d’apprenants anglophones et néerlandophones et qui avaient abouti à des résultats contraires, avec absence d’effet du type de sujet chez les anglophones et présence chez les néerlandophones. En créant des contexte de récolte de données aussi similaires que possible auprès des trois groupes d’apprenants, nous montrerons que les apprenants suédophones sont plus sensibles à l’effet du type de sujet et de sa saillance phonologique sur l’accord d’un verbe alternant en contexte pluriel, ce qui tendrait à confirmer l’hypothèse de l’amorçage pour ce groupe alors que les deux autres groupes ne permettent pas de privilégier l’une ou l’autre hypothèse. La L1 pourrait donc constituer un critère pertinent pour mieux appréhender l’apprentissage des formes verbales en FL2, quoique le stade développemental ne soit pas à négliger, comme le confirmera notre analyse intra-groupe des germanophones.

L’étude porte sur le cas où deux constructions, l’une à complément d’objet, l’autre à complément oblique, sont en concurrence pour un même verbe (goûter X / goûter à X, chercher X / chercher après X, pousser X / pousser sur X). Nous définissons dans un premier temps les conditions exactes des alternances étudiées et clarifions plusieurs points relatifs à la polysémie verbale, au statut syntaxique du SP et à l’extension d’emploi de l’alternance. Nous consacrons la seconde section du papier à l’étude des contreparties sémantiques éventuellement associées à l’existence de deux constructions distinctes. Nous établissons une tripartition des alternances, fondée sur la littérature scientifique à disposition, et nous montrons que la classification proposée ne couvre pas l’ensemble des cas répertoriés en français. Nous proposons une approche multifactorielle du phénomène, qui ménage notamment une place aux faits de variation inter-locuteurs.

Nuestro estudio se concentra sobre los tiempos verbales en ambas lenguas vitales desde una perspectiva comparativa, hemos arrojado la luz sobre el modo subjuntivo en español y en árabe por ser uno de los problemas más comunes que enfrentan a los aprendices árabes del idioma español para que sepan cuándo se usa este modo, y cuándo sucede la alternancia entre el indicativo y subjuntivo. Al mismo tiempo se concentra este estudio en hacer una comparación entre las formas verbales de subjuntivo en español y árabe porque este modo en español tiene seis formas verbales contando los dos futuros, mientras en árabe existe sólo una forma que es al- mudāri al mansūb, o sea que, el presente de subjuntivo.

Abstract:

Este trabajo tiene por objetivo el estudio de los pronombres átonos de tercera persona no reflexivos en el corpus oral del español hablado en la ciudad de Málaga (España). Puesto que Málaga está ubicada en una zona dominada por el sistema distinguidor de caso, resulta interesante conocer qué verbos y qué estructuras presentan la variación dativo/acusativo. Para ello, se exponen primero los principios analíticos seguidos y se destaca la importancia del tipo de construcción en el uso del objeto directo-acusativo y del objeto indirecto-dativo. Después se proporcionan los porcentajes de uso de los clíticos pronominales y se analizan los verbos y construcciones en los que se atestiguan la variación o la alternancia. El resultado más relevante es la constatación del alto grado de conservadurismo lingüístico en lo referente al uso etimológico de los verbos y construcciones registrados, al mismo tiempo que se comprueba la existencia de un incipiente leísmo de persona masculino singular vinculado al nivel de estudios medios.

Es bien sabido que los sustantivos cuantificadores en singular referidos a una pluralidad de entes suelen dar lugar a una doble opción de concordancia: la «canónica» y la denominada concordancia «ad sensum». Desde nuestro punto de vista, esta «doble concordancia» no responde al reemplazo de la concordancia morfológica por la rección, como se ha sugerido; en ambos casos tendríamos concordancia propiamente dicha. Por lo tanto, tampoco concebimos las muestras con plural —que en múltiples circunstancias es la única opción posible— como ejemplos de silepsis. Nuestra propuesta se basa en reconocerle una doble función a la concordancia, y permite explicar: a) por qué la libre alternancia singular/plural no se da en todos los contextos sintácticos; b) por qué en español es posible hallar cuantificadores susceptibles de concordar en el nivel supranominal; c) por qué la interpretación distributiva de una oración no está necesariamente reñida con el hecho de que el verbo concuerde en singular con el sustantivo cuantificativo del grupo nominal sujeto, y no con el que, precedido de la preposición de, informa sobre la clase o la identidad del referente.

We tested the hypothesis that Part B of the Trail Making Test (TMT) is a measure of cognitive set-shifting ability in 55 normal subjects with the conventional (written) TMT and a verbal adaptation, the "verbal TMT" (vTMT). The finding of a significant association between Parts B of TMT and vTMT (r = 0,59, p < 0,001), after correcting for age and education, supports the view that Part B of TMT is a valid measure of the ability to alternate between cognitive categories.

Thulung Rai, an endangered Tibeto-Burman language of Eastern Nepal, has complex verbal morphology, with verb endings encoding agent and patient person and number in transitive scenarios. In addition to this, a large number of verbs alternate between several stems, and the stem selection criteria are initially elusive. Inspired by work by Boyd Michailovsky, who proposes morphophonological accounts for the verb stem alternation in related Dumi Rai, I propose an analysis of the Thulung verbal system and its verb stem alternation.

ABSTRACT Background Diet quality may be an important area of focus for promoting cognitive health; however, the association between diet quality and cognitive function among Hispanics/Latinos remains largely unexamined. We hypothesized that a healthier diet quality will be associated with better cognitive function in middle-aged and older Hispanics/Latinos. Objective The objective of this study was to examine associations between the Alternate Healthy Eating Index (AHEI-2010), a measure of diet quality, and cognitive function in middle-aged and older Hispanics/Latinos. Methods Data from the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL) Visit 1 (2008–2011) were used (n = 8461; ages 45–74 y). Cognitive function was assessed with tests of verbal learning and memory, verbal fluency, and processing speed; a global cognition score was derived by summing the z scores of individual tests. Dietary intake was assessed via two 24-h recalls. Total AHEI-2010 score was categorized into quintiles (higher quintiles indicating healthier diet). Linear regression models were used to examine associations between AHEI-2010 quintiles and cognitive function adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics, daily energy intake, type 2 diabetes, smoking, and depressive symptoms. Results Compared with the lowest quintile, in the second to fourth AHEI-2010 quintiles, global cognition scores were significantly higher by 0.28, 0.52, and 0.48 units (P-trend = 0.042). In the second to fifth AHEI-2010 quintiles, verbal learning scores were significantly higher by 0.60, 0.62, 0.92, and 0.88 units, and verbal memory scores were higher by 0.33, 0.40, 0.52, and 0.46 units (P-trend = 0.020 and 0.007, respectively). No associations were observed between the AHEI-2010 and verbal fluency or processing speed (P-trend = 0.49 and 0.84, respectively). Among AHEI-2010 components, adequate consumption of vegetables, alcohol, and whole fruits were each associated with better cognitive function. Conclusions An overall healthier diet quality was associated with better global cognition, verbal learning, and verbal memory in middle-aged and older Hispanics/Latinos.

The closure of a portion of the Santa Monica Freeway following the 1994 Northridge earthquake afforded the opportunity to study the behavior of motorists as they found their way around the collapsed bridges along alternate and detour routes. In this study, 502 motorists, many of whom were displaced from the damaged Santa Monica Freeway, responded to a mailed questionnaire asking about changes in travel patterns, factors affecting alternate route choice, way-finding strategies used, difficulty in following alternate routes, attitudes toward the neighborhoods containing alternate routes, and attitudinal changes regarding the risk of traveling city freeways. A factor analysis of the responses revealed a procedural knowledge factor, indicating that motorists found landmarks, street signs, and written directions to be helpful aids in following alternate and detour routes. Procedural knowledge, the stored sequence of decisions about how to get from one place to another, is part of the spatial knowledge acquisition process. It is suggested that cues supporting a procedural level of knowledge could be used to enhance Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS). Alternate and detour route information could include more emphasis on landmarks and street signs and be conveyed in the form of written or verbal directions.

This hypothesis, as she notes, might explain why the papyrus' quatrains are set apart by spaces and by an odd type of symbol, and treat ‘separate, indeed discrepant, topics’, yet show ‘unmistakable verbal and thematic connections’. Fairweather's discussion is thorough, but overlooks one small piece of evidence for Gallan amoebaean verse.

En el Romancero Gitano , y también en el Llanto por Ignacio Sánchez Mejías3, obras a las que dedicamos este estudio, Federico García Lorca recurre a la poesía popular y emplea algunos recursos típicos de los antiguos romances españoles, como por ejemplo el uso singular de los tiempos verbales del romancero tradicional para crear un mundo poético especial. La mezcla de los tiempos verbales en el Romancero Gitana es un rasgo característico que llama mucho la atención. Parece que existe un juego entre los tiempos verbales que más frecuentemente aparecen en estos poemas: el presente, el pretérito simple 4 y el imperfecto. The purpose of this study was to identify potential general outcome indicators (GOIs) of language proficiency. Brief narratives were elicited from 45 kindergarten, first-grade, and third-grade children using single-picture scenes and a standardized protocol. Measures of language productivity, verbal fluency, and grammaticality were examined for alternate-form reliability and criterion validity. Two verbal fluency measures, total productive words per minute and total number of words per minute, were reliably obtained for students in all grades, demonstrated moderate criterion validity with a standardized oral language measure, and differentiated third-grade students from those in kindergarten and first grade. Additional standards for GOIs are discussed.

In Balto-Slavic, the large scope of stem variation within the verbal system inherited from Proto-Indo-European was reduced, on the paradigmatic level, to few apophonic verbs, reduplicated and nasal presents, but the former variety left traces in the lexicon, as alternate stems of an original paradigm gave rise to new paradigms, formally independent and semantically distinguished from each other. Bearing in mind this process may be helpful in solving etymological dilemmas and reconsidering problematic etymologies. This possibility is illustrated here by four instances of an etymological connection reestablishable, in Slavic, between apparently unrelated verbal stems if taking into account the Proto?Indo?European verb morphonology.

Previous studies of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) have been criticised for using the same battery of neuropsychological tests during classification and longitudinal followup. The key concern is that there is a potential circularity when the same tests are used to identify MCI and then subsequently monitor change in function over time. The aim of the present study was to examine the evidence of this potential circularity problem. The present study assessed the memory function of 72 MCI participants and 50 healthy controls using an alternate battery of visual and verbal episodic memory tests 9 months following initial comprehensive screening assessment and MCI classification. Individuals who were classified as multiple-domain amnestic MCI (a-MCI+) at screening show a significantly reduced performance in visual and verbal memory function at followup using a completely different battery of valid and reliable tests. Consistent with their initial classification, those identified as nonamnestic MCI (na-MCI) or control at screening demonstrated the highest performance across the memory tasks. The results of the present study indicate that persistent memory deficits remain evident in amnestic MCI subgroups using alternate memory tests, suggesting that the concerns regarding potential circularity of logic may be overstated in MCI research.

Uninostril breathing facilitates the performance on spatial and verbal cognitive tasks, said to be right and left brain functions, respectively. Since hemispheric memory functions are also known to be lateralized, the present study assessed the effects of uninostril breathing on the performance in verbal and spatial memory tests. School children ( N = 108 whose ages ranged from 10 to 17 years) were randomly assigned to four groups. Each group practiced a specific yoga breathing technique: (i) right nostril breathing, (ii) left nostril breathing, (iii) alternate nostril breathing, or (iv) breath awareness without manipulation of nostrils. These techniques were practiced for 10 days. Verbal and spatial memory was assessed initially and after 10 days. An age-matched control group of 27 were similarly assessed. All 4 trained groups showed a significant increase in spatial test scores at retest, but the control group showed no change. Average increase in spatial memory scores for the trained groups was 84%. It appears yoga breathing increases spatial rather than verbal scores, without a lateralized effect

Although the legal context is a formalized framework, in judicial proceedings there is also room for multi-modal argumentation. To the traditional logical mode, multi-modal argumentation theory has added three additional modes (the so-called “alternate” modes: visceral, kisceral, and emotional). They complement the logical mode in unclear legal cases, those with vague and ambiguous premises (both legal and factual). What is discussed here is visual argumentation as part of the visceral mode. Visual arguments can be appropriate in legal argumentation as evidence used to determine the lower premise. However, “thick” visuals invite alternate arguments to be applied in legal argumentation. This “invitation” is not exactly the same as with “thick” verbal texts because what is at issue are different semiotic resources.

Este fenómeno consiste en que el sujeto gramatical pueda ser expresado por medio de una forma explícita o implícita en una cláusula personal con verbo conjugado. Para llevar a cabo esta investigación se analizó una muestra de doce entrevistas semidirigidas, pertenecientes al corpus sociolingü.stico de Montevideo, adscrito al PRESEEA. La alternancia se correlacionó con variables lingüísticas —tipología verbal, ambigüedad, turno de la conversación, conectividad discursiva y distancia clausular— y sociales —sexo, edad y grado de instrucción—. ResumenEl presente estudio ofrece una descripción razonada de la alternancia que tiene lugar entre las locuciones conjuntivas así que y así es que en español actual, aspecto que no había sido tratado con anterioridad en ningún trabajo gramatical. En primer lugar, se revisa el significado de estas dos formas, uno consecutivo y otro temporal, así como los contextos de uso en los que forman parte: los tiempos verbales con los que suelen aparecer, su posición dentro de la frase, la posibilidad de combinación con otros nexos y conectores, la forma dequeísta (así es de que) y su origen y evolución. En segundo lugar, se presenta su distribución geográfica y se establece una comparación de uso entre los diversos países hispanohablantes. Para ello empleo los datos del CORPES XXI, datos que se analizan desde el punto de vista estadístico mediante la frecuencia normalizada de cada una de las locuciones y una prueba de análisis de varianza. Los resultados muestran una diferencia de empleo en el caso de así es que, uso favorecido en la variedad chilena. Este hecho mostraría un caso concreto del pluricentrismo de la lengua española.

Abstract:

Objective The aim of the present study was to investigate whether patients with Parkinson’s Disease (PD) had changes in their level of performance in extra-dimensional shifting by implementing a novel analysis method, utilizing the new alternate phonemic/semantic fluency test. Method We used machine learning (ML) in order to develop high accuracy classification between PD patients with high and low scores in the alternate fluency test. Results The models developed resulted to be accurate in such classification in a range between 80% and 90%. The predictor which demonstrated maximum efficiency in classifying the participants as low or high performers was the semantic fluency test. The optimal cut-off of a decision rule based on this test yielded an accuracy of 86.96%. Following the removal of the semantic fluency test from the system, the parameter which best contributed to the classification was the phonemic fluency test. The best cut-offs were identified and the decision rule yielded an overall accuracy of 80.43%. Lastly, in order to evaluate the classification accuracy based on the shifting index, the best cut-offs based on an optimal single rule yielded an overall accuracy of 83.69%. Conclusion We found that ML analysis of semantic and phonemic verbal fluency may be used to identify simple rules with high accuracy and good out of sample generalization, allowing the detection of executive deficits in patients with PD.

Abstract:

The identities of gender normative get deconstructed and reconstructed with alternate possibilities of self-constitution. This phenomenon is rendered more complex with its intersection with other factors of identities like race/ethnicity, social class, geography etc. The linguistic representation of these complex variegated aspects of gender from its essentialist to poststructuralist perspectives was analysed in Staples’s Cholistan trilogy which consists of three novels Shabanu (1989), Haveli (1993) and The House of Djinn (2008). An eclectic approach of a theoretical framework consisting of Lazar’s (2005; 2007; 2014) Feminist Critical Discourse Analysis (FCDA), Butler’s (1990) gender performativity and Foucault’s (1980) subjectivity theory was adopted. Halliday’s (1985) approach to transitivity analysis was used for analysing the transitivity processes in the performances of gendered subjects described in the verbal phrases of the clauses in the text. Various kinds of constructions of gender identities were revealed in the study like biological determination of gender, the social construction of gender, the configuration of gender, gender stereotypes, deconstruction of gender normativity and reconstruction of gender identities with possible alternate performances. The study recommends the textual representation of gender in a way that help deconstructs gender normative and reconstruct gender identity with alternate possibilities.

Abstract:

The increased use of video capable cellular phones to document everyday life presents educators with an exciting opportunity to extend this capability into the introductory laboratory. The study assessed whether students enrolled in a southeastern U.S. university's first-year laboratory course retained technical information at a higher rate after creating a technique video. These videos were created on hand-held video capable devices that students owned prior to enrolling in the course, eliminating additional cost to students. Pre-/post-test analysis (N = 509) was performed to determine short- and long-term learning gains regarding reporting the volume of graduated glassware to the proper number of significant figures. Though both groups used various graduated glassware throughout the term, chi-square analysis showed that students who created a video detailing use of a Mohr pipet reported the volume of graduated glassware correctly on the final exam and laboratory practical at a significantly higher rate than those students who received only verbal instruction on the technique.

Abstract:

En el aprendizaje de la aritmética, en los primeros años de la educación formal, interactúan determinados procesos cognitivos, así como variables de tipo sociodemográfico. En este contexto, el objetivo del presente estudio fue analizar la contribución específica de los predictores de dominio específico (comparación simbólica y no simbólica) y de dominio general (memoria de trabajo verbal y visoespacial, alternancia atencional, control inhibitorio e inteligencia fluida) en la resolución de una tarea de aritmética básica en escolares chilenos. Es un estudio correlacional y predictivo, y la muestra estuvo conformada por 203 participantes con desarrollo normotípico, 94 niñas y 109 niños. El modelo de regresión lineal múltiple con pasos sucesivos explicó un 30.4% de la variabilidad en la aritmética básica, y la comparación simbólica fue la variable que tuvo mayor poder predictivo seguida de la alternancia atencional. Estos resultados destacan la implicación de la comparación simbólica y la alternancia atencional en la explicación de la variabilidad en el rendimiento en aritmética básica durante los primeros años de la educación formal, aspecto que destaca la importancia de la evaluación en edades tempranas de múltiples componentes cognitivos que se ha constatado que son predictores de la adquisición del pensamiento matemático, y no sólo centrar las evaluaciones en mediciones basadas en el currículo.

Abstract:

Sign language is the most putative language among hearing impaired people. They use non-verbal form of communication that involves hand gestures, head or body movement or facial expressions. Of these hand gestures is more widely used. Automatic Sign Language Recognition (ASLR) System can be used to convert these non-verbal signs into text or sound so that normal people can identify them without learning the sign language. ASLR employs Image Processing and Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms for effective conversion from sign to sound or text. This review unveils various image processing and AI steps involved in the conversion process, bringing out important topologies in the Image acquisition, segmentation, feature extraction, classification and detection process and a comparative analysis among various topologies. Attempts have been made to shed light into adoption of alternate design strategies in segmentation and feature extraction that enhance the performance in a complex environment.
