Abstract:
Alternanthera sessilis is a yearly or perpetual prostate weed, found all through the more smoking piece of India, climbing to a height of 1200 m. The plant has been scientifically demonstrated to comprise of substance constituents like α-and β-spinasterols, lupeal disconnected from roots. The aim of the study was to assess the awareness of medicinal applications of Alternanthera sessilis among dental students. A cross-sectional study was done with a self-administered questionnaire with 10 questions circulated among 100 dental students. The questionnaire assessed the awareness about Alternanthera sessilis therapy in medical applications, their wound healing properties, anti glycemic applications, memory enhancement applications, anti-ulcer, diahorreal and anti-inflammatory activity. The responses were recorded and analysed. 91% of the respondents were not aware of medicinal applications of Alternanthera sessilis therapy. 85% were not aware of the wound healing properties of Alternanthera sessilis therapy. 87% were not aware of the anti glycaemic properties of Alternanthera sessilis therapy. 85% were not aware of memory enhancement properties of Alternanthera sessilis therapy. 89% were not aware of the anti-ulcer properties of Alternanthera sessilis therapy. 83% were not aware of ant diahorreal of Alternanthera sessilis therapy. 89% were not aware of the anti-inflammatory properties of Alternanthera sessilis therapy. The awareness about the use of Alternanthera sessilis therapy in medical applications is low among dental students. Increased awareness programs and sensitization and continuing dental education programs along with greater importance to the curricular modifications can further enhance knowledge and awareness about Alternanthera sessilis therapy.

The Experimental animals were divided into 4 treatments replicated 3 times as the T1- pure commercial feeds, T2-100% <em>Alternanthera sessiles</em>, T3- combination of 50% commercial feeds and 50% <em>Alternanthera sessilis</em>, T4 was then a combination of 30% commercial feeds and 70% <em>Alternanthera sessilis</em>. The efficacy was observed within 120 days. Ahead of the allotment of the experimental animals initial weighing were conducted to ensure the weight uniformity. Subsequently, administration of the different treatments was done. Data on final weight, gain in weight, feed consumed, feed conversion efficiency and feed conversion ratio for growth performance and the hematological parameters at 120 days end of the study. Results revealed that there were significant differences in final weight, gain in weight, feed conversion efficiency and feed conversion ratio among all treatment. However results showed that the T3 combination were not significantly different from T1. Furthermore, on the hematological parameters results showed no significant difference between treatments. This implies that <em>Alternanthera sessilis </em>was recommended at 50%combination to 50% commercial feeds and it was safe for feeding swine without any harmful effect on the performance.&nbsp;

Green leafy vegetables are becoming increasingly popular in the developing countries due to their high nutritious value, common availability, and low cost. However, no studies have assessed the health risks associated with consumption of fresh green leafy vegetables. The present study assessed Cd, Cr, and Pb associated health risks in a commonly consumed green leafy vegetable in developing countries, Alternanthera sessilis. The Cd, Cr, and Pb concentrations in roots, leaves, and root zone soil of Alternanthera sessilis harvested from organic and non-organic cultivations were measured. The results indicated that Cd, Cr, and Pb concentrations in roots and leaves of Alternanthera sessilis exceeded the WHO/FAO safe limits for human consumption. Further, bioconcentration factor, soil to root, and root to leaf translocation factors indicated a potential of hyperaccumulating Cd in roots and leaves of Alternanthera sessilis. However, the target hazard quotients for Cd, Cr, and Pb were less than 1 indicating negligible health hazard associated with long time consumption of Alternanthera sessilis.

A greatest challenge for society in the 21st century is to meet energy demand, where biomass is subjected for pre-treatment and converted into biofuel (alcohol). Aquatic weeds are potential bio resources which are easily available for biofuel production. Aquatic weeds like Alternanthera sessilis, Typha latifolia, Eichhornia crassipes, Baccopa monnieri, Ipomoea aquatica and Pistia stratiotes are estimated for carbohydrates content. Highest content of reducing sugar was observed in Alternanthera sessilis (296.8µg/ml), total sugar in Ipomoea aquatic (880.00mg/ml), starch in Alternanthera sessilis (57.13mg/ml), cellulose in Pistia stratiotes and Typha latifolia (280.00mg/ml), hemicellulose in Typha latifolia (26.85mg/ml); high cellulosic aquatic weeds were subjected to pre-treatment methods like physical, chemical and enzymatic method.Meanwhile different yeast strains from the fruits of Manilkara zapota, Cucumis melo, Musa paradisiaca, Citrullus lanatus, Punica granatum and Ananas comosus were isolated yeast of Citrullus lanatus shows highest amount of alcohol production (307µg/ml), which is inoculated to pre-treated hydrolysate, where Alternanthera sessilis and Typha latifolia shows high amount of alcohol in physical method (160.5 and 115.4µg/ml). In chemical method in acid hydrolysis it shows 387.1 and 69.63µg/ml and in alkali hydrolysis 62 and 170µg/ml, so these two weeds were taken for enzymatic method for alcohol production, on seventh day Alternanthera sessilis shows highest alcohol production (113.33µg/ml), hence among six weeds Alternanthera sessilis and the yeast of Citrullus lanatus produces more amount of alcohol than others and it also shows that enzymatic method of pre-treatment is best in hydrolysis of biomass than physical and chemical method. AbstractMany herbal/botanical medicines from plant sources are being used for therapeutic purpose. Alternanthera sessilis sp. plant leaves are known for their phytochemical constituents, which have potent antibacterial activity. In the present study, the properties of the A. sessilis sp. extract and the biocomposite membrane of A. sessilis sp. with sodium alginate were studied for their biomedical applications. Results showed that the A. sessilis ethanoic extract possessed high levels of antioxidant and antimicrobial activity and no cytotoxic effect under in vitro conditions. Similarly, the biocomposite membrane of alginate with the A. sessilis sp. ethanolic extract showed high antibacterial activity with hemocompatibility and swelling characteristics. Although the antioxidant, antimicrobial and cytotoxic effects of A. sessilis have been previously reported, this is the first report on the preparation of a biocomposite membrane with alginate using A. sessilis for biomedical applications.

A laboratory study was conducted to investigate the allelopathic effect of aqueous extracts of plant parts of Alternanthera philoxeroides and A. sessilis and soil incorporated residues on germination and seedling growth of rice (Oryza sativa). Aqueous extracts prepared from different plant parts of Alternanthera species delayed rice germination. Alternanthera philoxeroides and A. sessilis inhibited rice germination by 9-100% and 4-49%, respectively. Germination of rice seeds was reduced with increasing concentration of aqueous leaf extracts of both weed species. Early seedling growth (root and shoot lengths) and seedling vigor index were significantly reduced by 5% aqueous leaf extract compared with distilled water treated control. Germination, root and shoot lengths, root and shoot dry weights and seedling vigor index of rice were drastically reduced by 3 and 4% in residue infested soil compared with residue free soil. The inhibitory effect of A. philoxeroides in terms of germination and seedling growth of rice was greater than that of A. sessilis. Five percent aqueous leaf extract and 4% residue infested soil of A. philoxeroides caused complete failure of rice seed germination. Alternanthera philoxeroides contained water soluble phenolics, namely 4 hydroxy-3-methoxy benzoic acid (16.19 mg L-1) and m-coumaric acid (1.48 mg L-1), whereas Alternanthera sessilis was rich in chlorogenic acid (17.85 mg L-1), gallic acid (11.03 mg L-1) and vanillic acid (9.88 mg L-1). The study indicates that the allelopathic potential of Alternanthera species may play an important role in enhancing the invasiveness of these species and may suppress rice plants in the vicinity.

O uso de elicitores, em cultura de tecidos, é um destes métodos. Elicitores são fatores físicos, químicos ou biológicos, que são capazes de desencadear respostas fisiológicas ou morfológicas nas plantas. Dentre os compostos produzidos pelas plantas, os pigmentos, como as betalaínas, por serem naturais e apresentarem funções antioxidantes, vêm recebendo destaque tanto pela indústria alimentícia, como farmacêutica. A espécie Alternanthera sessilis produz estes pigmentos, porém a demanda por esta quantidade é muito alta, sendo necessário otimizar a produção deste composto. Desta forma, o objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar o uso de elicitores químicos, através do Metiljasmonato, em sistema de hidroponia e uso de elicitores físicos, através de diferentes qualidades de luz em cultura de calos na espécie A. sessilis. No experimento de elicitação em sistema de hidroponia, plantas oriundas do cultivo in vitro e ex vitro sofreram elicitação com 100 μM de Metiljasmonato (MeJa), por 48 horas. Em seguida foi realizada a extração de RNA, quantificação de clorofilas, betalaínas e flavonoides. No experimento de indução de calos e elicitação com diferentes qualidades de luzes, explantes foliares e internodais foram colocados em meio MS com diferentes reguladores de crescimento, por 20 dias no escuro e 10 dias na luz. Os meios que se mostraram mais eficientes na formação de calos foram repetidos e acrescidos de meio de indução de betacianina (MIB) e estes permaneceram por 40 dias em cultivo sob as diferentes qualidades de luz (branca, azul, vermelha e escuro). Ao término do período foram quantificados betalaínas e flavonoides. No experimento de elicitação com MeJa em hidroponia, o tempo de 48 horas não foi capaz de alterar significativamente os parâmetros avaliados, porém em relação ao tipo de cultivo, plantas ex vitro tiveram um incremento significativo em relação à amarantina e betanina, comparada a de origem in vitro. No segundo experimento de indução de calos o tratamento que se mostrou mais propício à formação de calos e consequente indução de betalaínas foi a combinação do meio contendo 1,5 mg L-1 de 2,4-D e 2,0 mg L-1 de BAP e a luz azul, dobrando os teores de betalaínas. Conclui-se que a elicitação química por Meja não foi capaz de alterar quantitativamente os parâmetros avaliados no tempo de exposição de 48 horas e que a elicitação física pela luz em calos é um sistema eficiente de reprogramação metabólica nas plantas, já que a luz azul em conjunto com o meio de cultivo adequado é capaz de otimizar a produção de metabólitos de interesse comercial.<br>Alternative methods that may affect different biosynthetic pathways of plants to improve the production of phytochemicals of interest are increasingly being studied. Use of elicitors, in tissue culture, is one of these methods. Elicitors are physical, chemical or biological factors that are capable of eliciting physiological or morphological responses on plants. Among the compounds produced by plants, pigments, such as betalains because they are natural and present antioxidant functions, have received attention by both the food industry, such as pharmaceuticals. The species Alternathera sessilis produces these pigments, though the demand for this quantity is too high, it is necessary to optimize production of this compound. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the use of chemical elicitors, by methyl jasmonate, in hydroponics system and use of physical elicitors, through different qualities of light in callus culture in the species A. sessilis. In the elicitation experiment in hydroponics system, plants grown in vitro and ex vitro culture suffered elicitation with 100 mM of methyljasmonate (MeJA), for 48 hours. It then carried the RNA extraction, quantification of chlorophylls, betalains and flavonoids. In callus induction and elicitation experiment with different lights, leaf explants and internodal were placed on MS medium with different growth regulators, for 20 days in the dark and 10 days in the light. The means which were more effective in callus formation were repeated and added half betacyanin induction (MIB) and they remained for 40 days in culture under different light qualities (white, blue, red and dark). At the end of the period they were quantified betalains and flavonoids. In the experiment elicitation with MeJa in hydroponics, the time of 48 hours was not able to significantly change the parameters evaluated, but in relation to the type of crop, ex vitro plants had a significant increase in relation to amarantin and betanin, compared to original in vitro. In the second experiment callus induction treatment which was more conducive to the formation of callus and subsequent induction betalains was the combination of medium containing 1,5 mg L-1 2,4-D and 2,0 mg L-1 BAP and blue light, doubling the betalains contents. It can be concluded that chemical elicitation by MeJa, was not able to quantitatively change the parameters evaluated in time of 48 hours exposure and physical elicitation by light callus is an efficient metabolicreprogramming in plants, since light blue together with appropriate growth medium, is able to optimize the production of commercially important metabolites.

碩士<br>台北醫學院<br>天然物醫學研究所<br>81<br>The hepatoprotective effects of the crude Taiwanese herb " Horng-tyan-wu " ( Alternanthera sessilis ( L. ) DC. ) and " Hwang-hua-mih-tsay " (Wedelia chinensis (Osb.) Merr. ) were investigated in the following experimental animal models. Acute hepatitis was induced by various hepatotoxins, such as carbon tetrachloride ( 31.25 μl/kg, i.p.) or aceta- minophen ( 600 mg/kg, i.p. ) in mice and D(+)-galactosamine ( 188 mg/kg,i. p.) in rats. After treatment with A. sessilis or W. chinensis ( 300 mg/kg, p.o.) at 2 , 6 and 10 hours, a reduction in the elevation of serum glutamate oxaloacetic transaminase ( SGOT ) and glutamate pyruvic transaminase ( SGPT) levels could be observed at 24 hours after the above three hepatotoxins were administered. These serological observations were also confirmed by histopathological exami- nations. A microscopic examination of the liver showed a marked improvement in groups which had received A. sessilis and W. chinensis. In order to further confirm the hepato- protective effects of A. sessilis and W. chinensis,all phar- macological and histopathological effects were compared to those of an identified hepatoprotective Chinese herb,viz. Bupleurum chinense DC. (Family Umbelliferae) which has been confirmed to have obvious hepatoprotective effects. It was confirmed that A. sessilis and W. chinensis has a definitely hepatoprotective effects against the liver injuries induced by some hepatotoxins with different mechanisms.
