Abstract:
Abstract This paper focuses on the transition in the Dutch cutter fleet-targeting flatfish, from the conventional beam trawl to the pulse trawl fishing gear. In doing so, we explore the process of gear transition, presenting the challenges that fishers and policy-makers face. The pulse trawl technique represents a particularly controversial gear transition as it makes use of electricity, which has been banned by the European Union since 1988. However, it is seen by those developing it in the Netherlands as an important alternative fishing gear to the conventional beam trawl technique, which is becoming increasingly inefficient with rising fuel prices and well-documented impact on benthic habitats. By using a multi-level perspective on socio-technical transitions as the analytical framework, we explore the development of the pulse trawl and the interaction between different levels. We also discuss the influence of technology-push on its transition into practice and regulation. This paper demonstrates the importance of social dimensions in the adoption of new fishing gears and in doing so contributes to our knowledge on how technological transitions in fisheries can be managed.

Abstract:
Management of small-scale fisheries resources is more likely to be oriented towards economic growth by overexploiting fishery resources without paying attention to sustainability aspects. The number of smallscale fishing fleets tends to increase, resulting in over-exploitation in coastal areas. The purpose of this study is to develop alternative strategies for small-scale capture fisheries management in Cilacap Regency. Collecting data using survey methods and interviews with key informants. Sampling was done by purposive sampling technique. Data were analyzed using the AWOT method, namely the SWOT method combined with AHP. The results showed that the IFAS matrix value is 3.17 (strength = 2.211 and weakness is 0.715) the total value of EFAS is 2.926 (opportunity = 2.211 and threat = 0.715). The choice of strategy is in quadrant IV (growth and constructive conditions). Strategic priorities that can be taken include, increase productivity with environmentally friendly fishing gear, optimize fishing facilities and infrastructure assistance, strengthen the role of fishermen’s organizations or groups, increase human resource capacity through training and empowerment programs for fishermen and capital assistance for fishing business development.

Abstract:
Generating accurate estimates of the number of vessels in fishing ports using traditional methods (i.e., ground- and boat-based) can be challenging as observations are distorted by an horizontal perspective. Automated inspection using drones is an emerging research alternative for this type of investigation. However, the drone-based and ground- and boat-based survey methods have not been quantitatively compared for small-scale and commercial fishing fleets in their ports. The objective of this study was to determine the number of fishing vessels and detect onboard fishing gear using three independent sources of data along 41 ports across the Brazilian coastline. Proved by statistical significance, the drone-derived vessel counts revealed 17.9% and 26.6% more fishing vessels than ground- and boat-based surveys, respectively. These differences were further highlighted during the assessment of ports without a ground walkway, causing difficulty, especially for ground-based surveys. Considerable numbers and types of onboard fishing gear were detected using the drone survey, that could not be detected using the ground- and boat-based methods. Although the ground-based survey was associated with a lower cost in comparison with other methods, the drone-based survey required the least time to record fishing fleet features in study ports. Our findings demonstrate that drone surveys can improve the detection and precision of counts for fishing vessels and fishing gear in ports. Further, the magnitude of the discrepancies among the three methods highlights the need for employing drone surveys as a considerable time-reducing approach, and a cost-effective technique for fishery studies.

Abstract:
Collagen is widely used in drugs, biomaterials, foods, and cosmetics. By-products of the fishing industry are rich sources of collagen, which can be used as an alternative to collagen traditionally harvested from land mammals. However, commercial applications of fish-based collagen are limited by the low efficiency, low productivity, and low sustainability of the extraction process. This study applied a new technique (electrodialysis) for the extraction of Takifugu flavidus skin collagen. We found electrodialysis to have better economic and environmental outcomes than traditional dialysis as it significantly reduced the purification time and wastewater (~95%) while maintaining high extraction yield (67.3 ± 1.3 g/100 g dry weight, p < 0.05). SDS-PAGE, amino acid composition analysis, and spectrophotometric characterization indicated that electrodialysis treatment retained the physicochemical properties of T. flavidus collagen. Heavy metals and tetrodotoxin analyses indicated the safety of T. flavidus collagen. Notably, the collagen had similar thermal stability to calf skin collagen, with the maximum transition temperature and denaturation temperature of 41.8 ± 0.35 and 28.4 ± 2.5 °C, respectively. All evidence suggests that electrodialysis is a promising technique for extracting collagen in the fishing industry and that T. flavidus skin collagen could serve as an alternative source of collagen to meet the increasing demand from consumers.

Indonesian government classify fishing port into 4 categories namely Ocean Fishing Port, National Fishing Port, Sea Shore Fishing Port, and Fish Landing Fishing Port. The above classification based on partnership or lingkage industry among fishing ports. However, the lingkage industry do not run effectively due to unappropriate pattern. Improving the condition, Israel & Roque (2000) suggested to classify fishing port into 3 categories namely main service provider, intermediate service provider or server, and client. This paper describes an alternative formula that considers industrial linkage among fishing ports as fishing industrial centers. The research was held on Belitung Regency as long as 11 months from October 2007 to August 2008. There are several factors should be considered in building fishing port namely fishing facilities, fishing capacity, input dependency and fish landing capacity. The 4 factors are analyzed by multi criteria analysis then continued by technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution analysis. The research concludes that the Belitung is as the main service provider, the Mendanau Island and Seliu Islands are as the intermediate service provider or server, the other 2 islands are as the client. The new classification will increase effectiveness and efficiency of fishing port developments.

Abstract:
Coral reefs are one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world and apart from carrying out important ecologicalfunctions, they have an important socioeconomic role because they are source of income and livelihoods for severalcommunities. Coroa Vermelha, is a district of Santa Cruz Cabrália, State of Bahia, and, together with the northern portionof Porto Seguro, it comprises the Coroa Vermelha APA (Environmental Protection Area). The artisanal fishing of octopusstill plays an important role for the local population, although tourism is a more promising alternative. This study coversthe behaviour of the octopus fishermen from Coroa Vermelha relating to their catch, other elements of the ecosystem, andpossible conservation implications, following a broad ethnoecological approach. Non-structured interviews, followed bysemi-structured and structured interviews, with randomly selected octopus fishermen and with “native specialists”, werecarried out. The semi-structured interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim. The technique of direct observation, when fishermen were accompanied during the fishing, was also used. Twenty fishermen were interviewed; eight of whomwere considered “native specialists”. Two techniques of capture were reported, the catching of octopus over the reef andthrough diving, and five sampling points were cited as the most frequently fished by the local octopus fishermen. Amongstthe proposed interactions, that of human/plant interactions was found to be the weakest and that of human/animal thestrongest when fishing for octopus.

Abstract:
Spawner–recruit relationships (SRRs) are indeterminate for most species. Earlier workers proposed solving "amount of harvest" problems for such cases by tacitly assuming that the SRR is density independent (a straight line through the origin) for the available data. I extend that concept and demonstrate a technique for solving "method of harvest" problems when the SRR is indeterminate. This technique uses spawning biomass per recruit, rather than fishing effort, as the benchmark for comparing alternative methods of harvest. Yields from different harvesting methods are deemed comparable only when they produce the same spawning biomass per recruit. If the comparisons are consistent over the entire range of spawning biomass per recruit values, one can evaluate the relative merits of competing methods of harvest without the benefit of spawner–recruit data. Although this technique does not determine the optimal gear selectivity, it allows comparisons of sustainable yields from currently available gear types. The technique is particularly useful for analyzing fishery allocation and by-catch problems. Two life history parameters, critical age (age at which a cohort maximizes its biomass or dollar value) and the age at 50% sexual maturity, may be most important in determining the optimal method of harvest (fishing gear selectivity).

Abstract:
The adoption of new reinforcing and retrofitting materials provide an alternative and affordable techniques that can be utilized in low-income communities. FRCM is comprised of a broad spectrum family of reinforcing materials such that it allowed utilizing affordable local alternatives such as fishing net FN and welded wire steel mesh WWSM. The composite effectiveness stems from the compatible inorganic matrix properties which have similar properties to the substrate unlike other composites such as FRP. The tensile response of FN and WWSM and their mortar composites has been experimentally studied to characterize their strength, deformation, and the bonding between the reinforcement and the mortar. Experimental investigations on dog-bone composites specimens with their materials samples subjected to uniaxial tensile load were performed. The experimental campaign included testing 12 composite specimens taking into account multiple parameters like material, thread thickness, and the layer effect. The results show comparable strengths and high deformation capacity (12.5 times) of FN to the WWSM. Finally, the SEM imaging shows a well-impregnation between the mortar and the reinforcement of both materials. The tensile response of the composite emphasizes its potential as structural retrofitting and hazard mitigation technique for local builders and house owners in developing countries.

Abstract:
The increasing demand for live ornamental fish for export needs triggers fishermen to start looking for alternative fishing techniques that are more effective and efficient. The technique commonly used is the anesthetic technique using potassium cyanide. The use of cyanide has been banned by the government because of the many impacts it has caused such as the degradation of coral reef ecosystems, high non-target fish mortality and pollution of coastal areas. Clove oil is an alternative anesthetic which can be utilized with many advantages compared to cyanide. The sampled fish used was sergeant major (Abudefduf vaigiensis) as many as 15 fish with a size of 9-12 cm obtained from fishermen's catch using a scoop. The purpose of this study was to determine the optimal concentration of clove oil as an anesthetic of Sergeant Major Fish (Abudefduf vaigiensis) based on induction time and recovery time. The experimental design used was a Completely Randomized Design (CRD). Analysis of the data used is One-Way ANOVA parametric analysis and Kruskal Wallis nonparametric analysis. The results obtained are five series of concentrations (20 ppm, 30 ppm, 40 ppm, 50 ppm, 60 ppm) which have a significant effect on induction time (20 ppm and 60 ppm) of sergeant major fish (Abudefduf vaigiensis) (P<0.05) The treatment of five concentration series (20 ppm, 30 ppm, 40 ppm, 50 ppm, 60 ppm) did not have a significant effect on the recovery time of the Sergeant Major Fish (Abudefduf vaigiensis) (P>0.05).

Abstract:
Abstract The economic benefit that the fishermen can obtain primarily depends on the quality of their catches. Therefore, it is essential to ensure that the caught fish stays fresh until entering the market. The most common fish preservation on traditional fishing boats in Indonesia is block ice, which must be carried in the fish hold from the home port. In comparison, another alternative method for fish preservation is the Flake Ice machine that can produce ice on-board. The study on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) was conducted on these two fish preservation methods to understand the environmental impact of each technique. For undertaking the assessments, LCA software known as SimaPro was employed. The system boundary for the LCA about fish preservation applied the “well to wheels” approach and covered the whole service life of the vessel for the full consecutive 20 years of operation. The functional unit for the assessment was fish preservation of 4 tonnes during a 7-day fishing trip. The input of the evaluation was the materials and energy required to produce the amount of ice or to operate a refrigeration system for each year of the vessel’s operation, with a total of 30 trips per year. The paper explored the environmental impact of these two fish preservation methods in terms of Ozone Layer Depletion and Global Warming.

Abstract:
The article discusses the approach to modeling of metamorphoses in the development of a number of species in the context of their influence on the success of long-term trends of population dynamics. Changes in survival during early ontogenesis, controlled by important factor – the rate of individual development in a competing group of individuals, can cause unexpected degradation of population with a small excess fishing impact. The theory of nonlinear efficiency of reproduction leads us to the hypothesis that two different nonlinear effects are controlled by similar mechanisms. For insects such fluctuations in survival during metamorphosis can start another process - the rapid outbreak of pests, where actual formalization of the impact of parasites on the first stage of development, depending on the initial concentration of clutches, but limited resources is taken into account at a finishing. The method has been for submission to decline of generations on the basis of dynamic overriding differential equations with discrete-continuous structure of time. To extend the previously proposed model for the formation of generations is formed computing structure for the account mortality depending on the level of competition, complete with trigger functional and a new scheme describing the changes the growth rate for the example of the Caspian Sea sturgeon in three ecological and physiological stages of development. The new model has a non-trivial possibilities parametrically modification of behavior regimes. The coexistence of alternative cycles is explained by the increase in adaptive interspecies differences.

Abstract:
Prediction of tidal heights are increasingly beneficial for multitude of ocean functions such as port development, fishing industry, and safe movement of ships. As the general harmonic technique always needed great volumes of data for predicting tidal heights, Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) emerged as a viable alternative for addressing diverse problems in the coastal engineering sector in recent decades. However, there has been no previous research to distinguish Harmonic Analysis from ANN models for predicting tidal heights around Sri Lanka by overcoming the rampant issue of data scarcity, which is the focus of the present study. Hourly tidal heights recorded in the Western (Colombo) and Eastern (Trincomalee) coastal areas of Sri Lanka were used in modelling. As tidal elevation is periodic in nature, it was expressed as Fourier Series with its coefficients (constituents) being determined by Harmonic Analysis, while the ANN technique employed the back-propagation procedure to forecast tidal heights. Harmonic Analysis displayed lesser prediction performance even with five months of data at Colombo (MSE=0.030 and MAPE=1.875) and Trincomalee (MSE=0.019 and MAPE=1.052), in contrast to the ANN models with only 7 days of data, which has much lower MSE and MAPE at Colombo (0.006 and 0.096) and (0.003 and 0.052) at Trincomalee respectively. Thus, the ANN model outperformed the Harmonic Analysis in terms of both accuracy and flexibility. Overall, this study demonstrated the potential of ANN modeling as a reliable, economical, and efficient alternative for predicting tidal heights to circumvent the dearth of tidal data on the coastal Sri Lanka.

"Identification of gender and reproductive maturity in the absence of gonads: muscle tissue levels of sex steroids and vitellogenin in gag (Mycteroperca microlepis)." Abstract:
Gag (Mycteroperca microlepis) are often landed eviscerated, so their gonads are not available for histological verification of gender and stage of maturity. Information on gender is particularly important for the management of hermaphroditic grouper, where increased mortality through fishing can directly affect sex ratio and therefore the reproductive capacity of the population. Alternative techniques for evaluating fish gender and maturity therefore need to be developed for gag and other grouper. We utilized sensitive immunoassays to measure levels of the sex steroids estradiol-17beta (E2), testosterone (T), and 11-ketotestosterone (11KT) and the egg-yolk precursor vitellogenin (VTG) in gag on a quarterly basis. Plasma and muscle levels of E2, T, and VTG in females were lowest during summer, rising in winter to reach peak values in spring. During winter and spring, plasma and muscle levels of 11KT were significantly higher in males than in adult females or immature fish. Combined measurement of VTG and 11KT in gag muscle proved useful for differentiating between males, adult females, and immature fish between December and April, the period of active gonadal recrudescence. This technique should prove useful in cases where fishery data are primarily collected through port sampling and gonads are not available for analysis.

Abstract:
Transportation through water body is the cheapest and the most important way of transportation system in human life. Eritrea has a wide range of coastal area along Red Sea and it is obvious that those people who live in the coastal area were used to fishing. Wood is one of the easiest and ancient materials that have been utilized for the construction of boats and it also remains as a favorite one for many professionals, but the boats which were constructed of woods were much heavier in their light weight, therefore they couldn't carry more loads. Scarcity and high price of the timber along with the high annual repair and maintenance cost will reduce the income of the boatmen and also increased consumption of timber will results in faster deforestation. In this situation, various alternative materials like ferrocement, aluminium, fibre reinforced glass and fibre reinforced concrete has been used as an alternative material for construction of boats. So, our first work in the fabrication of the boat is to choose the alternative material for fabricating a vessel. Plywood has lots of advantages like they are stiffer than boards of equal thickness of regular lumber. Due to the stiffness of the plywood panels, weight can be saved by replacing the regular lumbar by plywood, which is an important problem faced in both power and sail boats. Fiber glass along with resins has many advantages like thermal insulation, electrical insulation, reinforcement, heat and corrosion resistant and easily recyclable for future purposes. This technique of fabrication will give good results by reducing the problems with leakage and bio fouling of hull surface due to marine growth such as barnacles and in turn which increases the life span of the hull surface of the boats. So this work will be useful for those communities who are working with the boats for their transportation and fishing activities and it also improves the standard of the fisherman and their activities. By design and constructing a boat with plywood and FRG, the quality and standard of the boat will be improved along with a certain degree of safety. As a student of marine engineering department, this research work increase the knowledge about design software’s like solid works and delft ship, design parameters of a vessel and all the fabrication procedures of the boat by using fiber reinforced glass in combination with plywood.

Abstract:
In recent years, there has been extensive research on the memristor, a non-volatile memory device that demonstrates effective emulation of biological synapses. The implementation of graphene as a top electrode in memristive switching systems presents an intriguing alternative to conventional materials such as Platinum. Graphene, as a carbon-derived material, possesses a remarkable area- to-volume ratio, biocompatibility, adsorption capabilities, and high electrical conductivity and thereby offers a promising avenue for the fabrication of biosensors with superior characteristics. This study reports a novel fabrication method of utilizing graphene as a top electrode in memristive devices. Characterization results of micrometric devices as well as larger memristive devices are also discussed. Larger devices show promising results to be used as memristive sensors. Microstructures have been fabricated successfully through developing a process flow and patterning graphene using photolithography and lift-off. E-beam evaporation and sputtering were used for depositing bottom metal electrodes and active layer respectively. Graphene was produced using the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method and subsequently transferred using the fishing technique. Ultimately Pt/TiO2/TiOx/Graphene memristive devices were fabricated.

Abstract:
Inadequate production practices are widely used in aquaculture management, causing excessive water and energy usage, as well as ecological damage. New approaches to sustainable aquaculture attempt to increase production efficiency, while reducing the quantities generated of wastewater and sludge. The sustainable operating techniques are often ineffective, expensive, and difficult to implement. The present article proposes a zero-waste production system, designed for growing fish and vegetables, using a new circular operational concept that creates synergies between fish farming and horticulture. In order to optimize the operational flows with resources, products, and wastes in an integrated zero-waste food production cluster, a business model was designed associating three ecological production practices: a closed fishing pond, a technology for growing vegetables in straw bales, and a composting system. The design had the role to assist the transition toward multiple circular material flows, where the waste can be fully reintegrated into the production processes. A comparative evaluation was conducted in three alternative growing environments, namely, a soilless culture established in straw bales, a culture grown in soil that had received compost fertilizer, and the conventional farming technique. When compared to conventional methods, experiments showed a significant increase in the cluster’s cumulative productivity, resulting in a 12% improvement in energy efficiency, 18% increase in food production, and 25% decrease in operating expenses.

Abstract:
Fishing cat (Prionailurus viverrinus) and clouded leopard (Neofelis nebulosa) are wild felids, currently in vulnerable status according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature red list (2017). Several measures in assisted reproductive technology (e.g. AI, embryo transfer) have been used by the Zoological Park Organization of Thailand (ZPO) to increase their offspring in captivity. Recently, the generation of induced pluripotent stem cell (iPS cells) becomes popular and provides alternative way to preserve good genetics in the form of cell with diverse capacities. This great potential of iPS cells is unlimited self-renewal and pluripotency, similar to embryonic stem cells (ESC). Under the right cell culture conditions, pluripotent stem cells can differentiate into all cell types of the body. Here, we aimed to find the optimal condition to generate integration-free iPS cells from fishing cat and clouded leopard. At first, to obtain somatic cells for cellular reprogramming, adult dermal fibroblast cell lines from both species were established from belly skin tissues. Subsequently, several nucleofection programs of AmaxaTM 4D-nucleofectorTM (Lonza, Basel, Switzerland) were examined to introduce integration-free DNA vectors carrying reprogramming factors into the felid fibroblasts. The transfected cells were cultured under numerous conditions: (1) matrix/defined surface including irradiated mouse embryonic fibroblast, gelatin, vitronectin, and Geltrex® (Thermo Fisher Scientific, Waltham, MA, USA); (2) ESC/iPS cell medium including Essential 8TM (Thermo Fisher Scientific) DMEM containing KnockOutTM Serum Replacement (KOSR; Thermo Fisher Scientific) and/or fetal bovine serum (FBS); and (3) supplement including basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF), l-ascorbic acid, nicotinamide, ALK5 inhibitor (A83-01) and RevitaCellTM (Thermo Fisher Scientific). We found that optimal nucleofection programs for human dermal fibroblast including FF-135 and EN-150 were able to transfer episomal vectors and excisable piggyBAC transposon carrying reprogramming factors into fishing cat and clouded leopard fibroblasts, respectively. The iPS-like colonies appeared around 26 to 30 days post-nucleofection. The culture of transfected cells on either Geltrex® or Vitronectin-coated surface supports the formation of iPS-like colonies with different derivation efficiency (0.01 and 0.005%, respectively). In addition, all colonies were formed under medium containing FBS, together with both bFGF and LIF supplements. Taken together, we have developed a platform to generate iPS cells from tissue collection to the establishment of iPS cell culture. This will further enable us to apply the technique to obtain iPS cells from other endangered and vulnerable felid species.

Abstract:
Environmental conflict management gains significance in rational use of natural resources, ecosystem preservation and environmental planning for mineral mines. In Central Coast Vietnam, titan mines are subject to conflicting use and management decisions. The paper deals with an empirical research on applying a combination of the fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and the fuzzy Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) to measure environmental conflicts emerging as a result of titan mining in Vietnam. The methodology used in the paper combines the fuzzy AHP and the fuzzy TOPSIS to rank environmental conflicts and propose conflict prevention solutions in the titan mining industry of Ky Khang coastal commune (Ky Anh district, Central Coast Vietnam). Data was collected by using a questionnaire with 15 locals, 8 communal authorities, 2 district authorities, and 12 scientific experts on titan mining, environmental geology, and sustainability management. The result shows that, titan mining conflicts with the eight criteria of economic sectors at five alternative sites including beach, protected forest, agricultural area, settlement area, and industrial area. The conflicts between titan mining and forestry, agriculture, settlements, fishing and aquaculture are highly valued. The beach area shows most environmental conflict as a result of titan mining, followed by the agricultural area and settlement area. Based on the empirical findings, legal and procedural tools such as environmental impact assessments, strategic environmental assessments, integrated coastal zone management, marine spatial planning, and multi-planning integration advancing environmental management for titan mines in Vietnam are suggested.

Abstract:
n this study, we investigated the problem of overfishing along the African coastlines, using two entities of South Africa and Central Africa Republic for data analysis, concentrating on the causes of overfishing and potential preventative measures. In order to understand the current overfishing problem in Africa, we first looked at the high local and global demand for seafood, the financial incentives for overfishing, and the ineffective government regulations and enforcement of sustainable fishing techniques. Through our analysis, we were able to pinpoint several important elements that contribute to overfishing in Africa, such as ineffective fisheries management regulations, lax law enforcement, a lack of alternatives for fishing communities to earn a living, and a lack of knowledge of sustainable fishing methods. We suggested several potential solutions to address these problems, such as implementing and enforcing sustainable fishing laws, encouraging alternative livelihoods for fishing communities, enhancing fisheries management through community-based methods, and raising awareness of sustainable fishing methods. Also, we offered pertinent academic references to back up our suggestions.

Abstract:
Plastics in marine environments undergo molecular degradation via biocatalytic and photocatalytic mechanisms. Abandoned, lost, or discarded fishing gear (ALDFG) damages marine and coastal environments as well as plant and animal species. This article reviews ghost fishing, ecological damage from marine plastics, recommended recycling practices and alternative usages of derelict fishing gear. Material mixing techniques are proposed to counteract the effect of biocatalytic and photocatalytic biodegradation within the context of plastic fish net recycling. There is a need for a new and rapid “multidimensional molecular characterization” technology to quantify, at a batch level, the extent of photocatalytic or biocatalytic degradation experienced on each recovered fishing net, comprising molecular weight alteration, chemical functional group polydispersity and contaminant presence. Rapid multidimensional molecular characterization enables optimized conventional material mixing of recovered fishing nets. In this way, economically attractive social return schemes can be introduced for used fishing nets, providing an economic incentive for fishers to return conventional fishing nets for recycling.

Abstract:
Skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis Linnaeus, 1758) distributed vastly along the Indian Ocean south of Java, Bali and Nusa Tenggara. It has been exploited by various fishing gear yet it always assumed to be a single stock. It was not based on scientific evidence but merely based on “a scientific assumption”, so that vulnerable to subject of overfishing. This research aims to examine the alternative tool for identifying the stock structure based on the otolith shape. Sampling location took place in four regions, namely: Binuangen, Sadeng, Prigi and Labuhan Lombok. The otolith (sagittae) samples was collected during April, August, and September 2016. The otolith shape was reconstructed using outline analysis with discrete wavelet transformation technique. A multivariate statistic using canonical analysis of principal (CAP) and ANOVA-like permutation test were also used to determine the signification among populations. The result showed that skipjack’s otolith shape was varied from one and another, especially in the rostrum. But it was not statistically different among regions (p>0.001), which means a single stock for skipjack in the Indian Ocean (Indonesian territory of FMA 573). This study also proved that otolith shape can be useful marker tool to identify stock structure for management purpose.

Abstract:
We use techniques from economic recreation demand modeling to develop a mechanistic model of individual recreational fishing behavior and estimate it using license-frame survey data. By consistently integrating individuals’ seasonal decisions of where, whether, and how much to fish, the model generates predictions of aggregate indicators such as angler-days and fishing mortality as phenomena arising from individual behavior. We use the model to simulate alternative future scenarios by altering policy variables or measures of fishing quality, such as catch rates. The mechanistic nature of the model incorporates anglers’ adaptive behavior to these stimuli, generating scenarios that are likely more robust to shifts in the decision context than many commonly used phenomenological models. We utilize the model to examine the sensitivity of total catch and catch per unit effort (CPUE) to changes in fish stocks, revealing substantial nonlinearities in this relationship. We also simulate total fishing trips, participation, CPUE, and total catch for a seasonal fishing permit versus a per-trip fee, finding dramatic differences across the two policies that call into question the wisdom of permit fees as management tools.

Abstract:
Guiding barrier fishing gear has been used in recent years in the mangrove, seagrass, and coral ecosystem areas of Bontang City. In previous studies, the main target, white-spotted spinefoot fish, has depreciated and degraded as a result of overfishing. This study calculates the economic benefits and attempts to analyze the management policy of guiding barrier fishing gear to overcome the depreciation and degradation problems. To calculate the economic benefits, the fisheries production approach was used, while the policy analysis used the interpretive structural model technique. During the peak season of white-spotted spinefoot fish, the average fisherman earns up to IDR400,750 per day, with a minimum of IDR103,000 and a maximum of IDR1,904,000. The optimal fishing period is nine months, after which fishermen will stop fishing in Ramadan, August, and September. There are six guiding barrier fishing gear management policies, namely: 1) open and close systems at the installation site; 2) increase the mesh size used; 3) reduce the number; 4) moratorium on new installations; 5) limit the number of owners for each fisherman; and 6) regulate the distance between guiding barrier fishing gear. Of the six policy alternatives, the top priority is to increase the mesh size used.

Abstract:
Percut Village is one of the villages located on the East Coast of North Sumatra which is directly opposite the waters of the Malacca Strait so that the main livelihood of the villagers is as fishermen. During pandemic, the government has implemented a Large Scale Social Restriction policy which has an impact on the social status of the community, such as limited fishing activities which have resulted in a decrease in the selling price of caught fish. In addition, the silting of sedimentation in 2020 resulted in the tides and coastline becoming unclear so that fishermen could not go to sea optimally. Based on these considerations, knowledge dissemination and training on techniques for creating aquascapes have been carried out for groups of young fishermen in July – September 2021 in Percut Village, Percut Sei Tuan District, Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra Province, North Sumatra Province. The results of this activity have a positive impact on the community to increase creativity and enrich soft skills by applying the knowledge gained to start becoming an entrepreneur as an alternative livelihood for fishermen youth groups so that they are able to compete in the midst of society and can create jobs.

Abstract:
Fishing trip cost is an important element in evaluating economic performance of fisheries, assessing economic effects from fisheries management alternatives, and serving as input for ecosystem and bioeconomic modeling. However, many fisheries have limited trip-level data due to low observer coverage. This article introduces a generalized linear model (GLM) utilizing machine learning (ML) techniques to develop a modeling approach to estimate the functional forms and predict the fishing trip costs of unsampled trips. GLM with Lasso regularization and ML cross-validation of model are done simultaneously for predictor selection and evaluation of the predictive power of a model. This modeling approach is applied to estimate the trip-level fishing costs using the empirical sampled trip costs and the associated trip-level fishing operational data and vessel characteristics in the Hawaii and American Samoa longline fisheries. Using this approach to build models is particularly important when there is no strong theoretical guideline on predictor selection. Also, the modeling approach addresses the issue of skewed trip cost data and provides predictive power measurement, compared with the previous modeling efforts in trip cost estimation for the Hawaii longline fishery. As a result, fishing trip costs for all trips in the fishery can be estimated. Lastly, this study applies the estimated trip cost model to conduct an empirical analysis to evaluate the impacts on trip costs due to spatial regulations in the Hawaii longline fishery. The results show that closing the Western and Central Pacific Ocean (WCPO) could induce an average 14% increase in fishing trip costs, while the trip cost impacts of the Eastern Pacific Ocean (EPO) closures could be lower.

Abstract:
Risk factors for Schistosoma mansoni infection were identified using a 1:1 matched case-control design. The work was conducted in the municipality of Pedro de Toledo, São Paulo State, Brazil, an area where the snail host is Biomphalaria tenagophila. Information on water contact patterns, knowledge, attitudes and pratices (kap), socioeconomic and sanitary conditions were obtained by mean of questionnaires. The crude odds ratio estimates and the adjusted odds ratio estimates using the logistic regression model are presented. Most of the examined individuals admitted recent water contacts (90.6% of the cases). The most frequent reason for contact was swimming, playing and fishing and the preferential site of contact was the river. According to the logistic regression technique, the main risk factors for infection were: a) water contact through swimming, playing and fishing; b) fording; c) bad hygiene. We concluded that recreational activities are the main reasons for schistosomiasis transmission in Pedro de Toledo and leisure alternatives should be offered to the local population.

ABSTRACT Ducks, geese and swans are included in the Anatidae family, Anseriformes order. The leading injuries causes to waterfowl are tangling in fishing materials and foreign bodies ingestion. A muscovy duck (Cairina moschata) was referred for treatment at Veterinary Teaching Hospital and a radiographic examination showed the presence of a hook in the coelom. Surgical exposure and incision of the proventriculus was made through left intercostal access and the hook along with a fishing line were gently removed. The animal began to feed voluntarily at the fourth post-operative day and two weeks after the procedure the patient was clinically well and was released to wild. This surgical approach differs in some aspects from the listed techniques in the known literature. It proved to be a viable and appropriate alternative to treat this affection since it did not cause any trans- or post-operative complications and enabled rapid recovery and subsequent patient release.

Abstract:
This study intended to provide information on the fishermen engaged in fishing in the Tangon River, Thakurgaon. To assess their existing status, some essential socio-economic information e.g. literacy, religion, health hazards, sanitation and medical facilities, family structure, income level, types of fishermen, fishing, and constraints were taken into account. Results indicated that the majority of the fishermen (77%) belonged to the age class >35-50 years and were dominated by Muslims (89%). Three educational categories were recorded where illiteracy was main (52%), 24% had a primary level of education, and 24% could only sign. This survey revealed that the fishermen near Tangon River are leading measurable life due to great financial hardship. Therefore, proper conservation and management measures must be taken to enhance the fisheries biodiversity in the river so that the fishermen can harvest sufficient fish on a sustainable basis. The government, as well as non-government organizations (NGOs), should take appropriate initiatives to enhance their living standard and to improve such techniques/alternatives that can benefit the underprivileged fishermen to hold present fishing profession in the Tangon River. Abstract:
Klungkung Regency is the smallest regency in the province of Bali, Indonesia. The waters of Jumpai Beach are one of the areas in Klungkung, which is one area that is used by the surrounding population for fishing activities for fishermen to obtain fishery products. Remote sensing technology has been applied because of its effectiveness and the significance of its use in compiling and revising resource maps. It is also helpful to support resource planning and management. A bathymetry map is a map that describes the depth of the sea and is presented using contour lines. Contour lines are abstract lines connecting several locations or areas with the same height or depth. Remote sensing techniques are available to determine the ocean’s depth because the air has signals from the very bottom of the ocean with strong solid wavelengths. However, the penetration of electromagnetic energy is limited. Therefore, remote sensing techniques are adopted to infer water depth and shallowness. One of the satellites that can be used for bathymetry mapping is Landsat-8. Landsat imagery has a spatial resolution of 30 meters, complemented by the visible channels required to extract bathymetric maps. Accurate estimation of shallow water area bathymetry for the safety of small boat navigation such as fishing and for benthic studies. Remote sensing technology can be considered one of the most desirable alternative tools for bathymetry development.

Abstract:
Marine foods are highly perishable products due to their high content of polyunsaturated fatty acids, which can be readily oxidized to form peroxides and secondary oxidation products, thus conferring such foods undesirable organoleptic characteristics and generating harmful compounds that are detrimental to the health of consumers. The use of preservation methods that minimize lipid oxidation is required in the fishing and aquaculture industries. Low temperature storage (chilling or freezing) is one of the most commonly used preservation methods for fish and seafood, although it has been shown that the oxidation of the lipid fraction of such products is partially but not completely inhibited at low temperatures. The extent of lipid oxidation depends on the species and the storage temperature and time, among other factors. This paper reviews the effect of low temperature storage on the lipid quality of fish, either alone or in combination with other preservation techniques. The use of antioxidant additives, high hydrostatic pressure, irradiation, ozonation, ultrasounds, pulsed electric fields, and the design of novel packaging can help preserve chilled or frozen fish products, although further research is needed to develop more efficient fish preservation processes from an economic, nutritional, sensory, and sustainable standpoint.
