This article explores the interplay between economic hegemony and political alignment. Using theoretical and empirical insights from Broner et al. (2024), we posit that hegemonic states, like the United States, foster political alignment, which enhances globalization. We use UN voting data to proxy for international alignment and show that hegemons induce alignment. These data have shortcomings, however. Abstract No social or economic future is possible without food. It is therefore imperative to conceive well-grounded and feasible food scenarios. Drawing on current literature about the politics and narratives of the Anthropocene, four possibilities are discussed in this chapter: the business-as-usual, the tech-food, the bioregional, and the eco-global food scenarios. The bioregional scenario is closely scrutinized here because it raises a grand critique of the current globalized food system. Its adherents reject the current hegemony of large companies in the food supply chain. Instead, conscious individuals and committed communities have developed a vast array of economic arrangements (usually labelled as ‘alternative food networks’) which prefigure the sustainable, localized, and fair agrifood system they wish for everyone and everywhere. These alternative food networks are defined and outlined before discussing how they perform the future today and how they tackle with internal contradictions and external constraints posed by the hegemonic food system.

AbstractThis chapter explores the failure of Ricœur and Nanterre students to engage with each other through discussion. In the mid-1960s, Ricœur had sought an alternative higher education model to break the hegemony of the Sorbonne as a place of huge lectures, distant tutors and a classical education. He was sympathetic to the students’ rebelliousness, yet his dream of equality of class, gender and subject discipline on campus failed; his experiences give us insight into the fragility of discussion as a mediating process.

These are narratives that show the US and other major powers such as China, India, and Russia leveraging their considerable military resources to compete over and secure vital natural resources, in the process of which they establish new command over, or lose, hegemony over the world-system. These texts thus register the fact that continued socio-ecological erosion may produce world wars in the future, but they see no alternative to such development. The questions these texts pose are ultimately how such future wars can be won by the American security apparatus or the nightmare that follows if other actors in the world-system take advantage of American failure.
