This article explores the interplay between economic hegemony and political alignment. Using theoretical and empirical insights from Broner et al. (2024), we posit that hegemonic states, like the United States, foster political alignment, which enhances globalization. We use UN voting data to proxy for international alignment and show that hegemons induce alignment. These data have shortcomings, however. UN voting only covers the post-WWII period, refers to a narrow set of issues, and displays little time variation. As for military alliances, they were not widely used before the mid-twentieth

In the transitions to advanced liberal States and post-Fordist economic paradigms, it is argued that the distinction between work and sociality has become blurred. This marks the emergence of the “social factory” where sociality is industrialised and industrialisation has become increasingly centred on immaterial, social activity. It is further argued that this regime has generated a new articulation of socio-economic relations based on biopower and systems of control alongside the irruptive agency of multitude. Abstract:
The hegemony of English has been explored in several studies since the wake of the twentieth century. Drawing on works of leading linguists, we have drawn our attention to the status of English as a dominating world language that exerts its influence on peripheral literatures of the world. This paper seeks to examine the hegemony of the English language in literary studies, more significantly, in the circulation of world literary pieces. The article discusses how English, at the center of literary production and circulation, distorts the real essence and concept of ‘borderless world literature

Through the lens of world-systems analysis, this research argues that Beijing is creating a miniature world-system overlapping with the United States-led world-system via its Belt Road Initiative (BRI). Although China has not yet become a core power, its BRI seems to possess the qualities of a new world-system in the making, within which China enjoys hegemonic traits such as economic and military might and capable alternative institutions. This BRI-bound world-system consists of BRI participant states whose areas and processes are being molded to better fit China as core and hegemon; a phenome

The Western hemisphere is experiencing a multidimensional system of US domination sustained through asymmetrical alliances of the economic, political, and military kind. That system of domination has fallen into crisis and is being challenged by a multifaceted resistance of popular, democratic, reformist, and revolutionary forces. Attempts to preserve the hegemonic ‘Pan-American Order’ gave rise to a ‘surge’ that is analyzed in this article. This interdisciplinary study reconsiders nineteenth-century English newspaper editor George Jacob Holyoake’s paradoxical legacy. Drawing on Gramscian cultural hegemony theory, the study demonstrates Holyoake’s use of press activism to win liberal reforms, culturally empower the working class and articulate Owenist-socialism’s evolving counter-hegemony. In particular, it shows that his editorial agitations laid important discursive foundations for secularism, freedom of the radical press and the co-operative movement.
