Abstract:

This report is concerned with the environmental impact assessment of two alternative access roads, the Western Access Route (WAR) and the Least Cost Alternative Route (LCAR), to the proposed Mohale Dam site, Lesotho. The procedure adopted by the Environmental Evaluation Unit (EEU) study team for the assessment of environmental impacts associated with the development of the two routes, is critically reviewed. A comparative evaluation of the alternative routes is undertaken. The preferred access route, which best satisfies the above environmental criteria, is recommended . In January 1993, the Environmental Evaluation Unit (EEU) of the University of Cape Town was appointed by Gibb-Bergman Joint Venture (GBJV), to assess the environmental impacts associated with the development of an access road from the Lesotho-South Africa border to the construction site of the proposed Mohale Dam (Phase lB), Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP), Lesotho. An existing road, termed the Western Access Route (WAR), was identified as a possible access route. This route would require upgrading to a suitable standard for the passage of heavy construction vehicles, and, in addition, the construction of a bypass of the central business district of Maseru . At an early stage of the study, an alternative access route to the WAR was identified from eight possible alternative routes. This route has been termed the Least Cost Alternative Route (LCAR). The EEU study team undertook a full assessment of the environmental impacts associated with upgrading the Mountain Road/Western Access Route (WAR) and the construction of the LCAR. These detailed impact assessments are documented in Report EEU/2/93/104a, EEU/2/93/104b and EEU/2/93/104c, submitted with this report.

Contract No. LHDA (Lesotho Highlands Development Authority) 1000 is the design and construction of the supporting infrastructure for the Mohale Dam, Phase lB of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP). The Environmental Evaluation Unit (EEU) of the University of Cape Town (UCT) was employed by GBJV (Gibbs-Bergman Joint Venture), consulting engineers, to conduct the environmental impact assessments for contract No. LHDA 1000. The impact assessments were: * an initial EIA of the Maseru bypass alternatives; * an EIA of two site access roads at the Mohale Dam construction site; * an EIA of the Resident Engineers Camp, and * an EIA of the Least Cost Alternative Route (LCAR) and the Western Access Route (WAR) for the transport of construction materials to the Mohale Dam site. The WAR, which forms part of the existing Mountain Road, was identified as a viable option for the transport of construction materials to the Mohale Dam site. The LCAR was identified from eight alternatives, excluding the WAR, in an initial desk-top study, as a viable route. The WAR proposal involves the upgrading part of existing Mountain Road, which runs in an easterly direction from Maseru, over the Thaba-Putsoa Mountain Range to ThabaTseka. The WAR proposal would upgrade 60 km of this presently degraded road between St. Michael's and Patiseng. The LCAR runs from Maputsoe to Ha Mateka via Teyateyaneng along existing roads. 55 km of new road will be built through the Jorodane Valley from_ Ha Mateka to Mafotholeng (refer to Map 1). Two separate baseline EIA reports were produced for the LCAR and the WAR proposals.

Abstract:
In this paper, we review findings from 19 studies of alternative route programs and conclude that they have not been shown to be inferior to traditional programs. These programs are program evaluations and lack many of the controls typical of experimental work; as a result, the findings may be less trustworthy than necessary for reasoned decision-making. Problems inherent in conducting studies of this sort are discussed and illustrated with examples from this literature. The appropriateness of the secondary content area model for elementary and special education is considered from both theoretical and empirical perspectives.

Brouillette, Rachel Bottjen. "Arenaviruses: mechanisms of antibody-mediated neutralization and an alternative route of entry." Diss., University of Iowa, 2017. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/5429.

Full text
Abstract:
The family Arenaviridae consists of over 30 members, some of which can infect humans and cause severe hemorrhagic fever. The three arenaviruses studied in this thesis, Machupo virus (MACV), Junín virus (JUNV), and Lassa virus (LASV), are causative agents of Bolivian hemorrhagic fever, Argentine hemorrhagic fever, and Lassa fever, respectively. Epidemics of these diseases can carry high rates of morbidity and mortality, and due to a lack of available countermeasures, all three viruses are considered category A priority pathogens by the CDC. Arenavirus glycoproteins (GPCs) are considered class I viral fusion proteins, but in multiple regards, they are quite unusual for viral envelope proteins. The GP precursor is translated as a polypeptide that is proteolytically processed within the secretory pathway by two sequential cleavage events to produce a tripartite complex (heterotrimers) that assemble into homotrimers to form heterononamers. The three distinct units of the GPC structure are a receptor binding domain, GP1, and fusion domain, GP2, and most peculiarly, a stable signal peptide (SSP) that traverses the membrane twice and associates with the GP2. The glycoprotein complex (GPC) of MACV encodes nine putative sites for N-linked glycosylation. As N-glycans have been shown to be important for a multitude of factors in glycoprotein biology, we sought to investigate the potential roles of the N-glycans on MACV GPC expression, function, antigenicity, and immunogenicity. To do so, we used MACV GPC-VSVΔG-eGFP pseudovirions (MACV-VSV) to study the effects of both individual and combinatorial N-glycan losses. Our results demonstrate that loss of N-glycans at sites N178, N370, or N378 resulted in a loss of GPC proteolytic processing, while the accumulation of multiple N-glycans reduced total GPC expression and function. Replacement of the native proteolytic cleavage motif with those from LCMV or LASV or from furin reduced or eliminated such processing. While individual N-glycans did not themselves affect total GPC expression levels or translocation to the cell surface, those that allowed for efficient GP1-GP2 cleavage led to the favored incorporation of properly processed GPC, which strongly correlated with high virion production and transduction competence. Separate from these findings, we also discovered that loss of N-glycans dramatically increased the antigenicity of subsequent pseudovirions, and while N-glycan mutants retained immunogenicity, the resultant antisera was limited to autologous targets and was not able to inhibit WT MACV-VSV nor JUNV-VSV transduction. The GPC of arenaviruses is the only antigen correlated with antibody-mediated neutralization, but despite strong cross-reactivity of convalescent antisera between related species, weak or no cross-neutralization occurs. Two closely related arenaviruses, MACV and JUNV, have near identical overall GPC architecture and share a host receptor, transferrin receptor 1. Given their extensive likeness, it is not clear how these two viruses avoid cross-neutralization. To address this, a series of MACV/JUNV chimeric GPCs were assessed for interaction with a group of α-JUNV GPC monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). All mAbs targeted the GP1, and those that neutralized JUNV-VSV transduction competed with each other for binding to the receptor binding site (RBS), specifically. Interestingly, these mAbs did not recognize MACV GPC in its native conformation, despite detecting the protein in western blots. Mouse α-JUNV and α-MACV antisera were also evaluated for neutralization of the wild-type and chimeric JUNV- and MACV-VSV. These antisera neutralized pseudovirions containing the autologous wild-type GP1; however, removal of an RBS-adjacent small disulfide bonded loop unique to MACV GPC was sufficient to increase cross-neutralization with α-JUNV antisera. Our studies provide evidence that this additional loop in MACV GP1 is an important impediment to binding of neutralizing antibodies and contributes to the poor cross-neutralization of α-JUNV antisera against MACV. To enter cells, LASV binds to O-linked glycans present on the cell surface receptor, α-dystroglycan (αDG). While αDG is ubiquitously expressed, glycosylation patterns on some cells restrict the ability of LASV to use this receptor. Multiple studies have suggested that alternative receptors exist on these cell types and have provided evidence that the phosphatidylserine (PtdSer)-binding receptor Axl, along with C-type lectins, play a role in DG-independent entry. In studies presented here, we demonstrate that TIM-1 functions as a receptor for LASV-VSV entry, mediating virion uptake in a PtdSer-dependent, mucin-like domain-independent, manner despite previous reports of the inability of TIM-1 to enhance LASV-VSV transduction. In cases of TIM-1-dependent entry, Ebola virus GP-VSV or LASV-VSV responded differentially to early entry inhibitors, Compound C and EIPA. This provides evidence that mechanism of virus internalization is viral glycoprotein-dependent and cell surface receptor-independent.

Parrish, Robert Todd. "The Teach for Florida Project: A Case Study of Alternative Route Certification Policy." UNF Digital Commons, 2008. http://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/223.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examined the policy implementation of the Teach for Florida Project, which was conducted as a grant program in 2003. The project was designed to help alleviate a critical shortage of teachers brought about in part by the passage in the fall of 2002 of Florida Constitutional Amendment 9, a referendum setting specific limits on the number of students who could be taught by one teacher. The project was created and run on a tight timeline, allowing only 6 months from initiation of the request for proposals to placement of new alternatively prepared teachers in their classrooms. Despite the short notice, 23 institutions submitted proposals, of which 19 were considered worthy of funding and 7 were selected. Of the institutions selected, three represented the State University System, three the State Community College System, and one was a consortium of independent private colleges and universities in Florida. Although each institution created its own plan, the programs demonstrated two divergent paradigms. The schools all proposed some form of classroom education methodology, while the consortium created an online training system. The potential to examine in detail the outcomes of the two approaches was lost because, as the literature review points out, there was no requirement in the request for proposals to maintain the data necessary to conduct such an investigation. The Teach for Florida Project was effective in creating alternative programs for teacher certification but could have provided greater insight into the alternative preparation process had evaluation planning been part of the implementation.

Full text
Abstract:
Alternative teacher certification (ATC) programs are one method created to help alleviate teacher shortages (Cox, Matthews, & Assoc, 2001; Hallinan & Khmelkov, 2001). While much debate has arisen over ATC programs, very few have empirically examined their impact on the teaching pool (Darling-Hammond, Berry, & Thoreson, 2001; Darling-Hammond, Chung, & Frelow, 2002; Goldhaber, 2000; Ingersoll, 1999; Shen, 1997, 1999). The present study was designed to explore differences by certification type and program characteristics based on novice teachers' demographics, educational attainment, sense of self-efficacy, and sense of preparedness to enter the classroom. Results from the present study suggest ATC programs are somewhat diversifying the teaching population by bringing in more minorities and science majors, but do not appear to be bringing in more experienced scientists and mathematicians nor do they appear to be alleviating the teacher shortage. In this sample, traditionally certified teachers felt better prepared than ATC teachers with the biggest differences on Promoting Student Learning. Regardless of certification route, prior classroom experience was a strong predictor of Overall Preparedness and a teacher's perception of his or her ability to be an effective teacher. For ATC teachers, a positive mentoring experience was a strong predictor of Overall Preparedness. The discussion of whether or not ATC programs should exist should now be replaced with a discussion of how to ensure that these programs produce better teachers and improve student learning. The underlying theme from the present study was that, in order to feel prepared and have high self-efficacy, novice teachers needed instruction in the majority of the components identified by research and by the National Commission on Teaching and America's Future (1996), including positive mentoring experiences, field based experiences, and curriculum based on child development, learning theory, cognition, motivation, and subject matter pedagogy. Results from the present study support the assertion that teacher preparation programs, program components, mentoring experiences, and field-based experiences do impact teacher effectiveness in the classroom.

Abstract:
The NYC Teaching Fellows (NYCTF) program, as the nation’s largest alternative certification program, aims to provide high-needs NYC public schools with highly qualified teachers in such hard-to-staff areas as math, science, and special education. Reports of NYCTF teacher retention are mixed; The New Teacher Project (TNTP) claims high retention rates, but other research indicates that fellow recruits have lower retention rates than other teachers in similar NYC schools – only Teach for America (TFA) exhibits higher attrition (Boyd et al., 2006). After scrutinizing these contrary claims, this paper examines the retention of a recent cohort of approximately 300 Mathematics Teaching Fellows (MTFs) in the NYCTF program, examining MTF’s early attrition, movements from school to school in the NYC system, and professional plans for the future. We also include findings on teacher induction, school leadership, and school context that affect MTF retention.

Full text
Abstract:
A natural phenomenon characterized by dense aggregations of unicellular photosynthetic marine organisms has been termed colloquially as red tides because of the vivid discoloration of the water. The dinoflagellate Karenia brevis is the cause of the Florida red tide bloom. K. brevis produces the brevetoxins, a potent suite of neurotoxins responsible for substantial amounts of marine mammal and fish mortalities. When consumed by humans, the toxin causes Neurotoxic Shellfish Poisoning (NSP). The native function of brevetoxin within the organism has remained mysterious since its discovery. There is a need to identify factors which contribute to and regulate toxin production within K. brevis. These toxins are produced and retained within the cell implicating a significant cellular role for their presence. Localization of brevetoxin and identification of a native receptor may provide insight into its native role as well as other polyether ladder type toxins such as the ciguatoxins, maitotoxins, and yessotoxins. In higher organisms these polyether ladder molecules bind to transmembrane proteins with high affinity. We anticipated the native brevetoxin receptor would also be a transmembrane protein. Photoaffinity labeling has become increasingly popular for identifying ligand receptors. By attaching ligands to these photophors, one is able to activate the molecule after the ligand binds to its receptor to obtain a permanent linkage between the two. Subsequent purification provides the protein with the ligand directly attached. A molecule that is capable of fluorescence is a fluorophore, which upon excitation is capable of re-emitting light. Fluorescent labeling uses fluorophores by attaching them covalently to biologically active compounds. The synthesis of a brevetoxin photoaffinity probe and its application in identifying a native brevetoxin receptor will be described. The preparation of a fluorescent derivative of brevetoxin will be described and its use in localizing the toxin to an organelle within K. brevis. In addition, the general utility of a synthesized photoaffinity label with other toxins having similar functionality will be described. An alternative synthetic approach to a general photoaffinity label will also be discussed whose goal was to accelerate the preparation and improve the overall synthetic yields of a multifunctional label.

Chitranukroh, Krirkbhumi. "The dynamics of preferential trade agreements and domestic institutions : an alternative route towards Asian regionalism : a case study of Singapore and Thailand's preferential trade agreements." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 2008. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/2952/.

Full text
Abstract:
The greatest concentration of regionalism in international trade today can be found in the Asian Pacific region, and the number of international trade agreements in that region is still rising. In the general literature on regionalism, some proponents claim that regionalism can be a test-site for developing countries to enhancing their institutional capacity, before they actively engage in future trade liberalising agreements. Could the institutional enhancement explain the rise of regionalism in the Asian region. This claim, however, remains empirically untested. This thesis aims to examine this claim by observing the effects inter-regional trade agreements have on developing countries, especially on provisions that eliminate regulatory barriers to trade, and how those provisions may enhance institutional capacity to tackle future trade agreements with regulatory barriers to trade. More importantly, the thesis examines whether those improvements contribute to developments of their own intra-regional trade agreements. The case study countries chosen are Singapore and Thailand because they have spearheaded the most trade agreements in the region. The thesis examines the effects of regionalism on domestic institutions both at the macro level - general institutions involved with trade policy making, and the micro level - specific institutions involved with the regulatory aspect of trade. To obtain a more comprehensive account of institutional development, the micro level includes two types of institutions: one on the development of trade facilitation, representing trade in goods; the other on the movement of persons, representing trade in services. Overall, developments at the macro and micro levels - improvements in negotiating capacity, moderate progress in governmental cooperation, creation of new governmental agencies, greater involvement of the business community and inputs from civil society- have all contributed to building the case study countries' institutional capacity. This in turn allowed them similarly to improve regulatory barriers to trade in their own intra-regional trade agreements, illustrating how trade agreements enhance developing countries' domestic institutions to engage in future trade agreements.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this document is to set out a comparison of the environmental impacts of the two alternative access roads to the Mohale Dam, Lesotho: the Least Cost Alternative Route (LCAR) and the Western Access Route (WAR), and to recommend a preferred alternative for construction. The analysis and comparison is couched in a theoretical framework with regard to the process, nature and function of Integrated Environmental Management (IEM) and the problems associated with implementation of the IEM process. In this report I1 set out some of the limitations and problems associated with the EIA on the access road to the Mohale Dam (LHDA Contract No 1000). I then discuss the criteria on which a selection of a preferred alternative should be made, focussing on concepts of sustainability (including ecological sustainability), provision of basic human needs, equity and social justice, and cultural diversity and self-realisation. Within the context framed by the limitations of this EIA, the report then compares the LCAR and the WAR, and makes recommendations with regard to a preferred alternative, based on this comparison. The report also provides comments and discussion on a management and monitoring plan for Phase lB of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP).

Bouvin, Jean-Louis. "Vers une version alternative à la suspension CRONE Hydractive." Thesis, Bordeaux, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019BORD0042/document.

Full text
Abstract:
The Hydractive CRONE car suspension developed by the CRONE team provides outstanding performances. Indeed, the CRONE method ensures the robustness of the stability degree with respect to variations of the sprung mass, while the Hydractive strategy enables the switchover between a comfort-oriented architecture and a road-behavior-oriented one. The association of the CRONE method with the Hydractive strategy allows to circumvent most of the dilemmas that occur with traditional architecture suspensions. The present study aims to develop an alternative version of the CRONE suspension using two approaches. A first approach consists of the implementation of a passive metallic version based on leaf springs aiming the modernisation and optimisation of historical technologies. The second one, however, involves the use of a more relevant and increasingly widespread technology with the development of an active pneumatic version of the CRONE suspension. The complete modeling of the ``CRONE'' comfort-oriented architecture is then proposed through its pneumatic accumulators and nozzles. This new version, benefiting from the pneumatic active system and from the development of the Autonomous Connected Vehicle, opens up new prospects for the development of car suspensions

Abstract:
The ability of a production system to complete orders on time is a critical measure of customer service. While there is typically a preferred routing for a job through the processing machines, often an alternative route is available that can be used to avoid bottleneck operations and improve due date performance. In this paper a heuristic approach is given to dynamically select routing alternatives for a set of jobs to be processed in a job shop. The approach is coupled with a job shop scheduling algorithm developed by Hodgson et al. (1998, 2000) to minimize the latest job (Lmax).

Abstract:
There is an increase in the popularity of alternative certification programs; however, some administrators are still reluctant to hire these graduates to teach within their schools. With the shortage of certified teachers in Mississippi, some school districts have no choice but to hire alternatively certified teachers. The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine if students taught by teachers trained in alternative teaching programs had significantly different changes in language arts scores on the Mississippi Curriculum Test 2 nd edition, as compared to fellow students who were taught by teachers trained in traditional teaching programs. Scores from the 2008--2009 Mississippi Curriculum Test 2nd edition were used for base line data. Scores from the 2009--2010 Mississippi Curriculum Test 2 nd edition were used to determine what degree of growth had taken place. The results were analyzed by using the educational software Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) to conduct independent t tests. Data are presented using descriptive statistics. Results of the t tests confirmed that students taught by both types of teachers had some degree of success. Seventh grade students who were taught by traditional route teachers showed the greatest amount of growth difference. With the continuing debate over teaching certification programs, studies such as this can help create social change by providing statistical evidence of the effectiveness shown by teachers certified through both programs. School officials can use these results to help in making hiring decisions of potential teacher candidates. The end result is to provide students with the best possible teacher regardless of certification type.

Abstract:
Due to teacher shortages at the study site, teaching positions in the state that is the focus of this study are filled by alternate route (AR) teachers, who earned bachelor degrees in the fields that were not related to education and received teacher certification through alternative teacher education programs. Because there is limited information about the preparation and performance of AR teachers at the site of this study, the purpose of this sequential mixed methods project study was to explore AR teachers' preparation and their effect on student learning as measured by Northwest Evaluation Association's Measures of Academic Progress/Discovery Education Assessments. Guided by Mezirow's experiential learning theory and Dewey's educational philosophy, this project study investigated the relationship between the alternate route teachers' field experiences and years of experience, and teachers' effect on student learning. Data collection included a survey of 36 K-12 AR teachers selected through convenience sampling, document analysis of their student assessment scores, and 6 structured interviews with purposefully selected high performing AR teachers. Data were triangulated and cross-analyzed. Findings indicated that when AR teachers engage in field experiences prior to teaching, their students have higher levels of achievement as evidenced in their assessment scores. There was no correlation between AR teachers' years of teaching experience and their student assessment scores. Analysis of AR teachers' interview responses revealed a need for professional development, which was then created to address those needs. This study may contribute to social change by offering the targeted professional development of AR teachers and improving the design of AR preparation programs to better influence student learning.

Abstract:
Geographical Information Systems (GIS) have been rapidly developed in the fields that need spatial data and transportation planning is one of these fields. Since transportation data is spatially distributed and need spatial, statistical and network based analysis
GIS applications have contributions to transportation planning. In this study, it is aimed to determine a new public transportation mode and route in the METU campus with the aid of GIS by considering the stations of Ç
ayyolu metro route. Besides, it is also aimed to show that GIS can be a useful tool for constructing transport planning database and exploring, analyzing planning data. Gross settlement area of the campus, covering about 220 hectare land on the southern side of the Ankara &
#8211
EskiSehir highway, is the study area of this thesis. First, campus land-use, topography, population characteristics and transportation structure are explored. Then, campus trip demand and pedestrian traffic are estimated. Afterwards, eight public transport route alternatives are proposed with their stops or stations for three different modes as
guided light transit, modern trolleybus and monorail. Proposed routes and stops or stations are evaluated with their physical characteristics and in terms of service areas shaped relative to pedestrian accessibility for determining the suitable public transport service in the METU campus. Consequently, Trolleybus B alternative is selected as the first degree suitable public transport service in campus. Besides, Monorail B and Trolleybus A services are determined as the second degree suitable services in campus.

Three research works were conducted in order to determine the chemical composition, nutrient and energy digestibility, apparent metabolizable energy (EMA) and apparent metabolizable energy corrected by nitrogen retention (EMAn) of babaçu cake, as well as to evaluate the results of its use on performance and carcass traits of Label Rouge chicks. The first experiment consisted a biological assay carried where the traditional total feces collection method was used to characterize babaçu cake bromatologically, as well as to determine its energy levels and metabolizability coefficients. Seventy two Label Rouge day-old-chicks where placed in metallic batteries and at the 14th day they where assigned to a randomized block design with two treatments and six replicates of 6 birds each. The results found where: Crude energy = 5,056 kcal/kg, Crude protein = 18.8%, Crude fiber = 29.50%, Ether extract = 8.8%, Calcium = 0.19%, Phosphorus = 0.67%, EMA= 2,650 kcal/kg and EMAn=2,580 kcal/kg. The dry matters, Crude energy s and ether extract s apparent coefficient of metabolizability were 31.72%; 46.78%; 92.35%, respectively. The nitrogen balance of reference diet and test diet where respectively 15.90% and 6.54%. The second research work was conducted aiming to evaluate the effect of different levels of inclusion of babaçu cake in diets based on corn and soybean meal on the performance of free range chickens from 1 to 7, 1 to 14, 1 to 21 and 1 to 28 days old. Three hundred day-old (male and female) Label Rouge chickens, were assigned to a completely randomized design with five treatments (0, 8, 16, 24 and 32% of inclusion of babaçu cake) and four replicates of 15 birds each. Inclusion levels of babaçu cake influenced feed intake at ages 1 to 7 days (P=0.0031) and did not influence other ages. Live weight and weight gain were influenced at age 1 to 7 days when it was used the SNK test for mean comparison. Live weight was affected at ages 1 to 14 (P=0.0003), 1 to 21 (P=0.0028) and 1 to 28 (P=0.0168) days old, as well as weight gain at ages 1 to 14 (P=0.0004), 1 to 21 (P=0.0037) and 1 to 28 (P=0.0196) days old. Feed convertion was affected at ages 1 to 7 (P≤0.0001) and 1 to 28 (P=0.0027).The third research work was aimed to evaluate the effect of different levels of inclusion of babaçu cake on performance, carcass yield and carcass protein and fat deposition of Label Rouge broiler chicks that received the experimental diets from 36 to 84 days old. Three hundred and sixty birds (male and female) were assigned to a completely randomized design with five treatments (0, 8, 16, 24 and 32% of inclusion of babaçu cake) and four replicates of 18 birds each. Weight at 84 days old and weight gain were not influenced by the different levels of babaçu cake, however feed intake increased (P= 0.002) and feed convertion was negatively affected (P=0.052) by crescent levels of babaçu cake in the diets. Carcass yield, carcass fat and protein deposition and abdominal fat deposition weren´t influenced as the inclusion levels of babaçu cake increased. It is possible the use of up to 32% of inclusion of babaçu cake in the diet of Label Rouge broiler chicks from 36 to 84 days old

Abstract:
The challenges of the Great Recession of 2008 have impacted the field of education to the point that many intern programs have ceased to exist. Alternative (or Intern) teacher preparation programs have also become an increasingly popular topic, especially since the term "highly qualified teachers" will soon be up for re-assessment. Concerns over the quality of teacher preparation programs have yet to yield conclusive results and seems to be an unending debate. This study has provided a glimpse into two intern programs and the process by which these programs have evolved. There were 6 major themes that emerged out of this study: Communication & Collaboration, Support, Financial Influences, Individual Dynamics, Beyond Curriculum and How Programs have Evolved to Remain Current. This study described participant perspectives that relate only not how these two intern programs survived during the challenging economic crisis, but how they have managed to thrive. Efforts were made by each program to utilize low intern enrollment to their benefit by providing added supports and individualized programming to better meet the needs of interns/teachers in training. Three intern participants, two Intern program directors and four intern program instructors have provided their perceptions on their programs to illustrate a clearer picture of how their respective intern programs have evolved to remain current in this challenging economically turbulent time.

Abstract:

The problem addressed in this study was the issue of technology integration in the classroom by alternate route teachers. The goal was to find a possible correlation between teacher personality and their ability to integrate technology. In this quantitative study, 174 completers from the New Pathways to Teaching New Jersey (NPTNJ) alternate route training program were surveyed to obtain information leading to the possible correlation between personality traits and technology integration skills. Of the surveys distributed, 141 had adequate qualifications, so only these were used. The key findings were that extraversion was positively correlated to technology integration skills and neuroticism was negatively correlated to technology integration skills. The results showed statistically significant positive correlations between completers who had a high score on the extravert personality trait and their proficiency in technology integration skills. Additionally, there was a statistically significant negative correlation between neuroticism and technology integration skills. The study showed there was no identifiable correlation between the personality traits of openness, conscientiousness, and agreeableness and technology integration ability. The implications of this study can be used to identify candidates who are likely to be successful at integrating technology into the classroom. Training modules and professional development can be developed to train teachers in the habits and characteristics associated with the extraversion personality trait and how to avoid the behaviors associated with neuroticism to increase the likelihood of technology integration in the classroom. Further research should be focused on other factors that may influence technology integration and alternate route teachers who completed the NPTNJ training program.

Tempest, Helen Ghislaine. "The association between sperm aneuploidy and male infertility : screening, aetiology and possible routes to alternative therapy." Thesis, Brunel University, 2003. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/5555.

Full text
Abstract:
One in six couples wishing to start a family are infertile. The many causes of infertility include genetic defects that can be single gene, multifactorial or chromosomal (including Y deletions, karyotype abnormalities and gamete aneuploidy). This thesis is concerned with the association between infertility and increased sperm aneuploidy. Specific questions are: should males be screened for sperm aneuploidy before intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)? Is there a relationship between individual semen parameters and sperm aneuploidy for specific chromosome pairs? What is the role of genome organisation in male gametes and its association with infertility? Whether use of alternative therapy (in this case, traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)) can be used to improve sperm disomy levels. Statistical analysis of questionnaire data revealed that infertility specialists believed there to be merit in screening sperm aneuploidy levels before ICSI. Evidence is presented for possible chromosome-specific and semen parameter specific mechanisms for sperm aneuploidy as is evidence of genome organisation that may be perturbed in infertile males. Finally, in six males studied, sperm aneuploidy levels improved significantly coincident with TCM. Closer investigation of the biological activity of individual therapeutic herbs and treatment cocktails revealed strong anti-oestrogenic and anti-oxidant properties. This suggests a possible mechanism of action of the herbs and provides the basis from which future placebo controlled clinical trials might continue. Possible criticisms of the work presented here include the unavailability of blood samples from many of the patients (thus preventing karyotype analysis) and the absence of a second control group in our studies on semen parameters. Nevertheless significant steps have been made towards establishing the need for, and the implementation of, a pre-ICSI screening test. Moreover progress has been made towards further understanding the aetiology of sperm aneuploidy and towards the implementation of a new treatment that may, ultimately, augment, or even replace ICSI.

Abstract:
Therefore, the research questions for this research study were: 1. Is there a statistically significant relationship between whether teachers are alternatively-certified or traditionally-certified and the extent to which they use state or district standards to guide instructional practice in their main teaching assignment? 2. Is there a statistically significant relationship between whether teachers are alternatively-certified or traditionally-certified and whether they use groupings of students in their classroom to teach students who learn at different rates? 3. Is there a statistically significant relationship between whether teachers are alternatively-certified or traditionally-certified and the extent to which they use the information from state or local achievement tests to group students into different instructional groups by achievement or ability? 4. Is there a statistically significant relationship between whether teachers are alternatively-certified or traditionally-certified and the extent to which they use the information from state or local achievement tests to assess areas where they need to strengthen their content knowledge or teaching practice? 5. Is there a statistically significant relationship between whether teachers are alternatively-certified or traditionally-certified and the extent to which they use the information from state or local achievement tests to adjust their curriculum in areas where their students encountered problems? Overall, while there were statistically significant relationships between certification type and various instructional practices, the effect sizes were very small (ranging from -.005 to .036). This suggests that the statistical significance may be an artifact of the large sample size and that there may be little practical significance. Therefore, a relationship was not found between the type of teacher preparation program and instructional practice.; This research study examined whether there is a relationship between teacher preparation and instructional practice. The dataset for this study was the 1999-2000 Schools and Staffing Survey (SASS). Specifically, variables created in SASS from the information provided by the Public School Teacher Questionnaire were utilized. The teacher population sample for this research study was derived from these data and then separated into two groups (alternatively and traditionally-certified teachers) based on certification variables within the dataset. The study conducted was a correlational study with instructional practices variables extracted from the dataset. Using Chi Square Goodness of Fit statistical tests, the data were analyzed to determine if teacher preparation influences instructional practice.

Abstract:
This work aimed to study the impact of incorporating optimization techniques into the air traffic flow management in the terminal area, specifically in the stage of arrival sequencing to an airport. For this, a mixed integer linear programming model for aircraft sequencing and scheduling for landing was developed, which seeks to determine discrete delays and discrete time advances, associated with the use of alternative arrival routes by aircraft, in the process of minimizing unavoidable deviations from the target landing time. The model developed was applied to the Brazilian scenario in order to evaluate the potential benefit it may generate if it is incorporated in a decision support tool for this stage of air traffic control. The Sao Paulo/Guarulhos International Airport was chosen as case study. From a radar database of a typical day of operations, a trajectory analysis was developed and input data for the optimization was obtained. The performance of the model, in terms of total deviations and computational time, was then evaluated for different operating scenarios by changing the following parameters: sequencing strategy, criteria of separation between aircraft, dynamic approach and discretization of the set of delays/time advances. Finally, the model benefits assessment revealed that the optimization approach was able to generate a reduction of total deviations, in relation to the actual solutions of traffic flow management taken, with a range of 5% to 35%, depending on the discretization level adopted and on the number of alternative approach routes available. Therefore, it is emphasized the potential of such models in reducing delays, fuel consumption, emissions and controller workload.

Abstract:
The Internet may does not meet all the demands required by applications sensitive to delay. Voice, video or even game applications demand low delay. The distance of hops between client and server, link traffic and the ramdomness of the package path, may cause delays. There is motivation and even implementation of alternative infra-structure to improve access. One example is the COMEP Network project, that proposes an alternative network in order to comply with the specific demands of such applications. This thesis proposes a high speed infra-structure network, exclusive for delay sensitive applications. This network, named IXnet, has it\'s origins in experiments with shared routing IXP, traffic studies of a sensitive to delay application and use of network simulator. The use of IXnet may increase the business front for operators and users that utilize sensitive to delay applications, improving the quality of the services provided.

Abstract:
Throughout history a diversity of animal species have been used and studied extensively in the development of vaccines for the benefit of humans and animals alike. As mice are a relatively easy species to maintain, handle and manipulate, and have the advantage of being cost effective, they are commonly employed as animal models in the investigation of immunisation strategies against mucosal associated pathogens. Vaccine research against the human gastric pathogen Helicobacter pylori is extensively conducted in a mouse model and typically uses intra-gastric administration for the testing of potential vaccine candidates. An inherent complication with this route, however, is that the vaccine constituents may be inadequately delivered to sites of specific immunity and consequently may not be the optimal method for vaccine delivery. In the present study a mouse model of H. pylori infection was used to determine the efficacy of alternate mucosal routes of immunisation from examination of protective immunity, immune responses and the practical aspects of vaccine administration. Commencing with the optimisation of intra-intestinal immunisation, the direct injection of a H. pylori vaccine to initiator sites of the mucosal immune system established baseline data of dose rates for the comparative analysis of intra-gastric, intra-nasal and intra-rectal immunisation. Following the development of simple administration techniques whilst maintaining the welfare of the animals, intra-nasal immunisation was shown to elicit the highest level of prophylaxis against H. pylori challenge. Effective prophylaxis was also shown to be dependent upon a specific ratio of the vaccine constituents. When using whole cell lysate of H. pylori and the mucosal adjuvant cholera toxin, the ratio of antigen:adjuvant for optimal protective immunity was 10:1. The outcomes of this study have proved conclusively the necessity for optimisation of all aspects of immunisation in an animal model of infection.

Abstract:
Every year the Philippines get affected by a number of typhoons, which cause severe damage, sometimes due to flooding. The capital, Manila, is located on a flood plain that is partly at, and even below sea level and with several rivers crossing the area. These are some of the factors that contribute to that Manila often is affected by severe flooding. During ten weeks of the spring semester in 2014, this thesis was conducted as a completion of the bachelor program Geographic Information System (GIS) at Karlstad University, Sweden. Eight weeks were spent in Manila in the Philippines at the University of the Philippines Diliman, School of Urban and Regional Planning (UP SURP). The aim of the study was to investigate how hospitals in Manila City get affected during flooding. GIS was used to perform network analyses, in order to calculate the shortest route for the emergency service to travel from a station via a barangay to a hospital. The shortest alternative route during a 5-year flood was also calculated in order to compare the distance differences that might be due to flood. During a 100-year flood another type of analysis was performed, where suggestions for suitable locations for placing emergency service and temporary medical centre were presented. These suggestions on suitable locations were placed in an area that will not be affected during a 100-year flood. Results from the analyses showed that Manila City is a very exposed area during flood. During a 5-year flood some parts of Manila City will be highly exposed and about 1/4 of the population will be affected. The shortest alternative route for the emergency service to use during flood will generally be longer than in normal situations. Some hospitals cannot be accessed from some barangays due to impassable roads. During a 100-year flood the area gets gravely affected, almost 2/3 of the population will be affected and many roads become impassable, which limits the accessibility in Manila City.

Abstract:

Abstract:

The debate over the effective preparation of pre-service teachers is not new. Often this debate concerns what might be considered successful methods for all pre-service teachers. However, preparation for career and technical education (CTE) teachers could look quite different than that of academic teachers, whether they are prepared through traditional or alternative routes to education. In this qualitative study, the researcher examined two iterations of the alternative-route program designed to prepare new CTE teachers in Mississippi and considered the level of self-efficacy of the teacher participants, the perceived effectiveness of the specific elements of each program, and the perceived significance of teacher/administrator and teacher/mentor relationships. The results of this study indicate that participants in the most recent iteration of the alternative-route program have a higher level of self-efficacy in teaching. The study also found that the specific elements of the newer version of the program are perceived as more relevant than those of the older version of the program and that teacher/administrator and teacher/mentor relationships play a key role in self-efficacy and job satisfaction among new CTE teachers. The results of this study also revealed that new CTE teachers desire opportunities to grow their pedagogical content knowledge by interacting and learning from veteran teachers in their respective content areas. Additionally, some of the more effective teachers who participated in this study rated themselves lower than their less effective colleagues on a self-efficacy survey and vice versa, indicating the presence of the Dunning-Kruger effect, which posits that, when an individual is unskilled in a certain task, they not only make poor choices in that area but also lack the metacognitive ability to realize it.

Abstract:
Biofuels become, in more and more countries, the environmentally friendly solution against the prospect of the reduction fossil fuels. Nevertheless, one must know that the production of ethanol generates an important amount of highly concentrated organic liquid wastes. We examine different options of waste management. Then, we focus on deep-well injection as a possible solution in the case of the Distillery of Savanna, located at Bois Rouge, La Réunion, Indian Ocean. Under 80m of silty alluviums, the confined volcanic aquifer as target for injection is relevant. We find that clogging appears, due to suspended solids and to biological activity. We suggest that leakance explain the lack of influence on the observation wells. We also show that aquifer's characteristics have a transient behaviour, depending on the flow rate. Numerical simulations give a travel time of 4 years until the discharge into the ocean, where ecological surveys attest a highly positive influence on benthic fauna
