Human immunodeficiency virus infection continues to challenge our abilities to provide the desired level of care in most areas of the world. Novel syndromes of infection continue to be defined as newer forms of immunosuppression and the development of unique medical devices become standard practice in all areas of medicine and surgery. For trainees and practitioners in the field of infectious diseases today, these factors mandate intense study to establish an expertise in the field that is required to provide best practices now and beyond. This board review will be pivotal in that education. This book is designed and intended primarily for infectious diseases trainees and practitioners preparing for the infectious disease subspecialty examination of the American Board of Internal Medicine. Physicians have cared for acutely ill patients throughout history; after the devastating poliomyelitis epidemics of the 1950s, a new specialty emerged. Initially, respiratory care units were created for these severely affected patients, but soon they were transformed into intensive care units (ICUs). Trauma units and transplant units soon followed. Specialized care for patients with acute neurologic and neurosurgical disease occurred in parallel with these developments, but many of the early neuroscience ICUs were redesigned wards for neurosurgical or neurologic patients. Specialized physicians and nursing staff delivered multidisciplinary care, recognizing that no one group could function well alone. It was inevitable that critical care for the sickest patient was the only option to give them a fighting chance to survive. Currently, neurocritical care board examination combines neurocritical care with general intensive care, and questions are equally divided between the two. It is therefore appropriate to combine both areas of expertise in one single volume. The chapters correspond with the key disorders suggested by UCNS to assist in preparation for the examination. As expected, this book is not only detailed in basic pathophysiology but also presents major disorders and syndromes and their management. Because it has unprecedented full coverage of acute neurology, this book is equally useful as a preparation for the critical care medicine board examination.

Abstract:

Mopan (Mayan, Belize/Guatemala) has two noun classifiers that resemble gender markers. However, the gender markers (GMs) violate expectations about canonical gender (Corbett and Fedden 2016): only a minority of Mopan nouns are gendered; gender is marked only together with the noun, not in multiple syntactic domains; gender marking can be omitted in certain syntactic contexts; and gender marking can be introduced when a normally non-gendered noun co-occurs with an adjectival modifier. We address the grammatical and discourse functions of Mopan GMs in relation to their non-canonical properties. Two productive functions—use as honorific titles with proper names and derivation of agentive nominals—are extended to various functions involving agentivity and differentiation, e.g. derivation of descriptive terms for non-human implements and terms for varietal subcategories. GMs are also employed creatively in discourse, e.g. to suggest animacy of inanimates or to introduce sex differentiation where it would not otherwise be signalled.

Ni los realistas lograban avanzar sobre Buenos Aires, el centro de la Revolución de Mayo, ni los patriotas podían amenazar Lima, el centro del poder español. San Martín tuvo la genialidad de concebir un Plan Continental para romper el estancamiento: crear un frente de batalla Occidental donde la guerra no había llegado. Un ejército en Cuyo, cruzar Los Andes, colaborar con los patriotas chilenos en recuperar su independencia, unir sus fuerzas y conducir el Ejército unido al Perú en una ¬ota de transportes custodiada por una Armada poderosa pero inexistente en esos tiempos. El “milagro” del nacimiento de la Armada de Chile contó con el importante aporte del Gobierno y personajes argentinos como así sus éxitos y su conformación.

Approaches to Monumental Landscapes of the Ancient Maya showcases interpretations and perspectives of landscape importance in the central Maya lowlands, Belize, and the northern and central Maya highlands with studies spanning over 10,000 years of human occupation in the region. Taking their cues from a robust scholarship on landscape archaeology, urban planning, political history, and settlement pattern studies in Maya research, the authors in this volume explore conceptions of monumentality and landscapes that are the products of long-term research and varied research agendas, falling into three broad conceptual categories: natural and built landscapes, political and economic landscapes, and ritual and sacred landscapes. The chapters explore the concept of monumentality in novel ways and approach the idea of landscape as not just the sum total of how a settlement’s local environs were plied and manipulated to conform to the Maya’s deep-seated and normative notions of sacred geography but also take note of how the lowland Maya actively constructed landscapes of power, meaning, and exchange, which rendered their social worlds imbricated, interdependent, and complex. Though varied in their approaches, the authors are all supported by the Alphawood Foundation, and this volume is a testament to the impact philanthropy can have on scientific research.

"La tensión de corte estructural se conoce como el proceso de mercantilización y empresarización educativa. Diferentes actores del campo han señalado que el conjunto de políticas públicas está direccionado la educación con criterios que promueven la réplica o adopción de la gestión empresarial privada y la productividad que ella demanda. Teorías del factor humano, de la administración de procesos, de los sistemas de calidad, el desarrollo de competencias y su relación con los estándares y escalafones internacionales como criterio de validación, se mencionan como rasgos de esta tensión. A lo cual habría que sumarle el proceso de desresponsabilización estatal y el hecho de asumir la educación como un servicio vendible y transable en el libre juego de la oferta y la demanda. Ello trae consigo mutaciones o cambios en las estructuras y dinámicas institucionales y en los actores o sujetos que participan de esta realidad. Conocer los requerimientos de ms en la finca es un indicador clave para la planeación forrajera y la mejora en la toma de decisiones. Por lo cual, la avena forrajera Altoandina, por su adaptación al trópico alto colombiano, se presenta como una alternativa eficiente para cubrir los requerimientos de alimento en épocas críticas de los sistemas de producción de leche en el trópico alto colombiano. Una dieta basada en un 35 % de silo de avena forrajera Altoandina para suplementación en épocas de escases de alimento permite mejorar la producción y rentabilidad de las fincas en la región (menor costo y mayor productividad por vaca).

Abstract:

O fenômeno da Evolução das Espécies é algo fascinante. Este processo levou à formação de uma série de organismos que jamais poderíamos imaginar que existiram. Na história mais recente da vida, há cerca de 11 mil anos antes do presente, havia mamíferos de grande porte que habitavam a superfície de nosso planeta. Estes animais habitaram todo o continente Americano, incluindo a região de Mato Grosso do Sul. Possivelmente, os humanos nativos da região chegaram a ver alguns destes animais fabulosos. Embora, infelizmente, estes animais tenham sido extintos, por meio desta obra você terá a oportunidade de conhecer um pouco sobre um passado não muito distante (em torno de 20 – 10 mil anos atrás) do Mato Grosso do Sul, numa época em que os protagonistas das paisagens eram bem diferentes daqueles que conhecemos hoje para o Pantanal.

Contra el mito de que las comunidades tsotsiles y tseltales de Los Altos de Chiapas fueron hasta años muy recientes sociedades cerradas y autosuficientes de pequeños agricultores y artesanos, Jan Rus mantiene que desde fines del siglo XIX las economías y las estructuras políticas y sociales de esas comunidades se han basado más bien en su participación como mano de obra estacional en la agricultura comercial de las tierras bajas de Chiapas.
