Abstract:
The preparation of bicrystal specimens of high interfacial purity and accurately controlled mismatch of orientation between grains with a specific boundary orientation are critical for fundamental studies of the structure and properties of grain boundaries. A method was developed for routinely producing high-purity aluminum bicrystals of desired mismatch and boundary orientation. A strain annealing technique was used for making large single crystals. The orientation, structural perfection, and chemical purity of the seeds were characterized, then the seeds were joined by using an electron beam

Single crystals and bicrystals have been used to study pitting corrosion and intergranular corrosion of Al and Al-Cu alloys in 0.5M NaCl solution. The critical pitting potential and pit density were examined as a function of a number of factors. The susceptibility for pitting corrosion was found to depend on crystallographic orientation in pure Al with {111} showing maximum pitti

Electrical trim techniques for reducing the value of a trimmable single crystal silicon resistor (trimistor) are presented. Computer-controlled current pulses are used to incrementally decrease the value of the trimistor through metal/silicon alloying. Variations of both single and multipulse current pulses are investigated. Physical mechanisms, based on electron microscopy of trimistors trimmed under various conditions, are hypothesized to explain the observed trim behavior. Threshold currents are dependent on the initial value of the resistor, the applied current density and the trim method.

The crack plane twist at the GB can result in a resistance against SFC growth; therefore SFC propagation preferred to follow a path with minimum α at each GB.
