Abstract:
Alumni associations are a relatively new phenomenon for Russia, typical, as a rule, for large metropolitan universities with a long history, rich traditions and extensive international relations. In recent years, alumni associations have begun to appear in regional universities. The authors analyze the situation with the development of alumni associations in the flagship universities of the country and in the universities of Volgograd (the chronology and forms of activity are considered). The article summarizes the results of Volgograd State Technical University Alumni Association's first year. Plans, goals and tasks for the further development of the VolgSTU Alumni Association have been developed. The authors show that the dynamic formation of alumni associations can be promising for regional universities as well, serving as platforms for the interaction of regional elites, centres of strategic decisions for regional development and providing communication between generations of alumni.

Alumni have an important role in the development of educational institutions in the public sphere, but regarding alumni, many schools have not used alumni in school contributions, one of which is SMK Muhammadiyah Sintang. Regarding information, SMK Muhammadiyah alumni have not implemented an online alumni data collection and management system. So far, data collection on alumni is still carried out by recording in written documents which results in data management that cannot be done quickly, and errors often occur, and it is difficult to update information about alumni. In conducting research, the authors use existing literature and literature study materials to build alumni websites using the WSDM (Website Development Design Method) research method, website development methods using Extreme Programming (XP), and the development of alumni information systems using a bootstrap framework, providing designs responsive web that gives the appearance of the website will automatically adjust the screen size of the browser used. Abstract:
Higher education has never truly recognized the importance of garnering the resources of alumni by expending university efforts in developing, controlling, and maintaining relationships with alumni. The purpose of this research is to tackle the long-term relationship marketing question. Drawing on the social marketing and relationship marketing literature, the authors propose and empirically test the roles of two relationship marketing strategies, namely identity salience and emotional attachment, in the alumni-university relationship. While the identity salience strategy encourages alumni to connect their identity to their former university, the emotional attachment strategy triggers the psychological ownership that leads alumni to proactively engage in university activities. Based on results of data collected from a large Midwestern university, the identity salience strategy was found to greatly affect symbolic consumption behavior while the emotional attachment strategy was found to strongly promote relationship-specific volunteering. The results also revealed that three social benefits, including development of a business network, enhancement of a friendship network, and enjoyment of participation, are associated with the two relationship marketing strategies. The authors conclude with a discussion addressing limitations of the study as well as practical and theoretical implications of the findings.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to provide students with a career edge, business students require more than concepts and calculations to be successful in their future career. They require professional skill sets, mentors, relationship guides and as much real industry experience as they can gather before graduation. This study sheds some light on how a small business school (SBS) in a nonprofit private academic institution (NPAI) located in an isolated rural area of the USA has been able to tap its strong alumni relationships to provide mentoring and experiential learning opportunities to students using its student-managed investment funds (SMIFs) as the vehicle. Although this study uses a small, geographically isolated institution, the authors believe that the approach taken by this particular school can be replicated by any academic institution that strives to enhance student learning experience by promoting mentorship and experiential learning. Design/methodology/approach This study starts with a brief introduction (Section 1) and a short review of literature (Section 2) to highlight the numerous benefits of alumni engagement and student mentorship. Section 2 shows institutional background on the NPAI, the SBS and the SMIF. The major part of the study starts with a discussion on the set of rules to guide in the construction of a student-alumni relationship framework that could be easily modified to the unique characteristics of the institution. Next, the role and responsibility of the investment advisory board (IAB) and its members’ engagement with students are discussed. In the last part of the study, SBS is used as a case study to show how alumni contribute to SBS and enhance students’ experiential learning by contributing as mentor, IAB member, advisors to the FMIF and career mentorship. This study concludes with a discussion on potential areas of conflict and friction for alumni involvement. Findings This study shows that SBS in a NPAI has been able to tap its strong alumni relationship to provide mentoring and experiential learning opportunities to students using its SMIF as the vehicle. The authors believe that the approach taken by this particular school can be replicated by any academic institution that strives to promote mentorship and experiential learning. Research limitations/implications This case study is focused on a SBS in a NPAI that has a strong alumni relationship and enough resources to successfully tap on its alumni. It would be interesting to learn how this approach can be used in resource-limited public institutions. Practical implications As the case study shows, any business school that values experiential learning can rely on its alumni to enhance student learning experience by properly using its alumni resources. Social implications The results of this study show that business schools’ outreach opportunities and student experiential learning experience can be enhanced and business schools’ academic qualification and ranking, which leads to improvement in student enrollment, can be improved. Overall, the major beneficiary would be the business schools’ immediate and larger community. Originality/value The authors are positive that multiple universities are properly taking advantage of using their alumni relationship.

In the contemporary world, it is well known that literary blogs have become an important instrument of production and propagation of literary written, as well as the internet is a field where the youngsters surf. Abstract:
This paper describes a pedagogical experience of the didactic sequence application in two classrooms of public school in São Paulo. The objective of the activity was the study of the chronicle genre, focusing on its narrative aspects, a dialogical and interactive approach to teaching and learning, according to the concepts of Bahkthin (1997), which conceptualizes the speech genres as relatively stable types of utterances. For the author, \"All spheres of human activity, however varied they may be, are always related to the use of language\" that \"is made in the form of statements (oral and written), concrete and unique emanating from members of a or another sphere of human activity. \".From reading and interpretation activities of chronicles, it is our intention that the students recognize not only the genres characteristics, but also the cohesive devices and their importance to the organization and clarity of the text, thus facilitating the authorship process of textual production. There was also the practice of rewriting. Due to its hybrid and flexible nature, the chronicle played an important motivating role. The choice for working with a didactic sequence provides the students with the opportunity to internalize the senses of the addressed genre. In this regard, Dolz, Noverraz and Schneuwly (2004) state that the didactic sequence helps in the development of the communication skills of those involved in the teaching and learning process, because it encourages the creation of real contexts of production. It is noteworthy that the teacher\'s role, rather than that of a mediator, must be that of a literacy agent, whom, according to Kleiman, \"(...) in the school context, would be a promoter of the capacities and resources of their students and their communication networks \"(Kleiman, 2006: 82-83).The task of rewriting followed the guidelines of Oliveira (2005), majorly in the procedures of \"text division in communication units, suitability of words to the official spelling system, eliminating repetitions, the detailed introduction of punctuation, and the recovering of the text by reading.\" The result of the study was very positive, given the adherence of most students and a writing improvement of several of them. Their textual productions, however, due to individual difficulties, resulted in simple narratives, lacking the comic, critical or reflexive nuances, which characterize chronicles. Since the genres are relatively stable, there is room also for instability manifested in the production of students.

Abstract:
This work, based on the French theory of Discourse Analysis, investigates the relationships between pedagogic discourse and the written productions of graduate students, trying to identify the effects of written texts on the constitution of their identities. The corpus consists of texts written by students of a Course of Engineering of a public university of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in a graduate course entitled “Laboratory of Writing”, during two years. The research is based on the works of Pêcheux (1990, 1993, 1995), Orlandi (1987, 1988, 1996, 2002a) and Foucault (2001, 2002) mainly. From this point of view, the pedagogic discourse is described as a authoritarian and homogeneous discourse which can be broken by “interpretation gestures” (ORLANDI, 1996).The analysis of the texts written by these students considered the presence of linguistic elements as adjectives, adverbs and pronouns, which, according to the linguistic theory, mark discursive positions taken by the students. The analysis gives visibility to interpretation process as a result of the pedagogic work developed in the activities of the course, which used to emphasize the production of meaning. It also gives visibility to interpretation and to identificatory processes emerging on the texts which I suppose is due to the pedagogic discourse of the “Laboratory of Writing”, which emphasized the practices of reading and writing as significant practices. From this point of view subjects and discourse are not homogeneous. I analyze the school practices of writing, the relations of power which characterize the actors of the pedagogic process, considering these relations can be transformed, being the school a place where the students can produce meanings and constitute their identities. I interpretate the textual and grammatical disorganization which can be perceived in a great number of texts written by students as “echos” of the dominant pedagogic discourse practiced in school, which mainly emphasizes the rules of grammar and the correct orthography. This research also intends, in a great extension, to theorize about the teaching of writing in school, starting from a point of view which considers the heterogeneity as being constitutive of subjects and of discourse.

What unifies them is their drive to improve patient care in their areas of expertise, with the means they have at hand and the skillset they acquired during their professional and educational journeys, frequently taking them from different parts of the globe to other ones. The task at hand, to reduce cancer-related morbidity and mortality, remains, as do the cornerstones of cancer control like primary prevention, screening and early treatment. Therefore, the interruptive force of the COVID-19 pandemic should be acknowledged, and measures must be implemented to prevent further delays in care for patients with cancers.

AbstractAlthough publicly-funded universities receive financial support from governments for teaching, research and infrastructure, they require additional sources of income in order to survive and thrive, and particularly to allow innovation and strategic development. It is amongst the responsibilities of the university leadership to ensure financial viability and to seek novel sources of funding, tasks for which they are not always well-trained. In this chapter, the author draws on his experience as a university leader on two continents to illustrate the possibilities as well as some of the hurdles and challenges. The chapter includes sections on philanthropy; alumni relations; industry/business relationships; commercialisation of research; and digital technologies & future horizons. Universities need to diversify their income streams, invest to succeed and get better at demonstrating their societal worth.

Abstract:
Design thinking is a powerful platform that provides the structure and process to measure integrated experiential learning (IEL). IEL situates the activities of experiential learning in an interdisciplinary setting that facilitates learning through reflection on experiences that engage deep knowledge in broad applications and span co-curricular and curricular environments. Using courses developed at two institutions as case studies, the authors describe pedagogy, instruction, and assessment methods, and focus the data types, collection, analysis, and implications of three assessment approaches (reflections, networks, and deliverables). They show how design thinking is essential to the assessment of IEL in courses and across institutional stakeholders, including student and academic affairs, alumni relations, employers and local businesses, and those focused on data for improvement in design (e.g., institutional research and legislators). Moreover, they show that the assessment phase of design thinking is essential to sustainability, scalability, and rigor of design thinking IEL projects.

Abstract:
The authors have carried out extensive measurements of electron triboemission from the scratching of selected ceramics and of semiconductors in high vacuum. Although the origin of triboemission is not clear, the authors suggest that some triboemission features relate to worn surface evolution. A bibliographic review is presented on analysis of electron triboemission data. Time-domain and frequency-domain discussion of the burst-type triboemission outputs are presented. This paper briefly summarizes key findings on triboemission and presents measurements of electron triboemission from an alumina ball and a diamond cone scratching alumina and sapphire disks. An exploratory study is focused on frequency analysis of data. The feasibility of investigating randomness vs. deterministic origin is explored for the triboemission outputs. Because key triboemission features are yet to be explained, the proposed data analysis can be a tool for such understanding.

Abstract When the engineering students graduate and are about to enter the “real world of engineering” — be it an engineering industry (as a coop or as an engineer), or return to an educational institution for further studies, they must appreciate and possibly be already familiar with the concept of “Total Design of the Mechanical System”. This means that the students be given excellent training before they graduate, to fulfil the current and the future needs of an industry. This paper presents the methodology adopted by the author based on his own experience as a consultant to an industry, in teaching 2 different design courses at the Michigan Technological University. The feedback obtained (from time to time) from the student alumni has been a totally rewarding experience.

Abstract:

Abstract For subsea mining, it is important to predict the pressure loss in oscillating pipes with pulsating flow for the safe and reliable operation of ore lifting. In the present paper, the authors focused on the pulsating internal flow in static vertical pipe and carried out slurry transport experiment to investigate the effects of flow fluctuation on the pressure loss. The alumina beads and glass beads were used as the solid particles in the experiment, and the fluctuating periods and amplitudes of pulsating water flow were varied. The time-averaged pressure losses calculated by the prediction method for the steady flow proposed in the past by the authors agreed well with the experimental ones. As for the fluctuating component of pressure loss, the calculation results using the quasi-steady expression of a mixture model were compared with the experimental data. The calculated results were different from experimental ones for alumina beads of which densities are almost same as those of the ores of Seafloor Massive Sulfides. It suggests that the expression is insufficient to predict the pressure loss for heavy solid particles. The calculated ones, however, provided those in the safety side. On the other hand, the calculated results for light solid particles such as glass beads agreed well with the experimental ones. It means that the expression would be applicable to the prediction of pressure loss for the mining of manganese nodules which are lighter than the ores of Seafloor Massive Sulfides.

Abstract This paper describes the properties and behaviors of alumina and titania coatings that have recently been produced using suspension spraying techniques. It examines coating microstructures and phase compositions are shows how they are influenced by different operating parameters and interactions. A selection of new experimental results obtained by the authors is also presented. In the case of Al2O3, the goal was to retain a high ratio of the thermodynamically stable α-phase. In the case of TiO2, the spraying process was optimized to preserve the anatase phase in order to obtain photocatalytically active layers.

Abstract:
Abstract Zirconia is effective in improving the fracture toughness to a number of ceramics when introduced as a reinforcement either in the form of particulate, dispersed phase, or whiskers because of its unique tetragonal-monoclinic (t → m) transformation. In this paper, the authors attempt to prepare ZrO2 reinforced Mullite by plasma spraying mixtures of zircon and alumina. Pre-mixed powders of zircon (ZrSiO4) and alumina are injected into a dc plasma jet. The plasma sprayed particles are collected in distilled water and analyzed. The dissociation of zircon in thermal plasma is a well-established fact. The present investigation aims to utilize the plasma dissociation of zircon to produced ZrO2-toughened mullite from a zircon + alumina mixture. The results indicate that the plasma sprayed powders consist of zirconia, amorphous SiO2, zircon, and alumina. It was found that ball milling and plasma spraying could yield fine grained, even amorphous and chemically homogeneous, composite powders. Recrystallization of amorphous phases and formation of mullite occurred at about 1000 °C in plasma sprayed powders. This value is more than 500 °C lower than the formation of mullite in as-milled powders. Uniform coatings with good structural integrity were obtained by plasma spraying. The relative quantity of mullite in coatings after heat treatment is about 4 times as much as that obtained in the spheroidized powders. Preheat treatment of the spheroidized powder promoted dissociation of zircon. Zirconia remained as tetragonal under 1000 °C in the sprayed coatings.

Abstract:
Subsea minerals exist in the deep water within Japanese exclusive economic zone. Development of slurry pump passing large particles is required for lifting ore. In design of slurry pump, it is significant to estimate the pressure loss in a riser pipe for large particle slurry transport. Therefore the authors have been studied the slurry flow model for large particle slurry transport. In addition, the authors developed the model for the static pipe including the inclined configurations. Since the lifting pipe will be oscillated due to the connected ship motion and VIV (Vortex Induced Vibration), the authors conducted the scaled model experiment to investigate the effects of pipe oscillation on the pressure loss. The model scale was 1/8. Alumina beads and glass beads were used as solid particles in the experiment. The pipe was vertical, and oscillated in horizontal or vertical direction. The experimental results showed that the horizontal and vertical oscillation had little influence on the static pressure loss in most of the experimental conditions. However the influence was observed for the horizontally oscillating pipe in the low slurry velocity and short oscillation period condition. On the other hand, the significant fluctuation components of pressure loss and flow rate were observed in vertically oscillating pipe. The results also indicated that the density of slurry and amplitude of oscillation had influence on the fluctuation components of pressure loss and flow rate but the particle diameters had little influence on them.
