Abstract:
Abstract: In order to leverage the relationship with alumni, universities strive to create an environment in which alumni would feel comfortable connecting, being part of the community, and realizing their volunteer and philanthropic potential. Such an environment also helps the university establish traditions of alumni relations that can ultimately lead to the achievement of the university's strategic goals, a sizable financial support and an active alumni community that broadcast success, knowledge and philanthropy. We started by surveying alumni about how much they were willing to be involved in supporting the alumni association, and how much time and money they were willing to invest. This article provides a short analysis of the literature on which the methods were selected, and the results of interviews with graduates were formed. The study was held in October 2023, stratified sampling method was used with five focus-groups. The article also contains information about the university, recommendations for future researchers and possible limitations. The findings suggest that future analysis of Kazakhstani alumni engagement should encompass the following elements: volunteer activities, fundraising, communication in social networks, and professional education. The results of this study could serve as a foundation for formulating communication strategies for young universities in Kazakhstan concerning their alumni relations. The study sheds light on the alumni lower willingness to engage in volunteer work, act as donors, offer contributions more focused on the educational process, and share their experiences. Keywords: alumni engagement; alumni relations; alumni interactions; alumni challenges; Kazakhstani University. Title: Alumni engagement analysis in Kazakhstan: a case study for non-state commercial university Author: Yekaterina Smolyakova, Assem Syrlybay International Journal of Recent Research in Thesis and Dissertation (IJRRTD) Vol. 5, Issue 1, January 2024 - June 2024 Page No: 51-56 Paper Publications Website: www.paperpublications.org Published Date: 18-January-2024 DOI: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.10526730 Paper Download Link (Source) https://www.paperpublications.org/upload/book/Alumni%20engagement%20analysis%20in%20Kazakhstan-18012024-2.pdf

Abstract:
Becoming an alumnus marks the beginning of life for students in their pursuit of employment. Career orientation is the primary goal for graduates to develop the knowledge and skills they have acquired during their studies, although alumni often face challenges in finding jobs. Competition and problems in the job market are common occurrences. Issues frequently arise in the quest for stable income without relevant solutions. Moreover, companies sometimes view alumni as lacking sufficient experience in their fields, thus limiting their opportunities to achieve their career goals. This study aims to explore the experiences of Tour and Travel alumni in seeking employment within the tourism industry, both in formal and informal sectors. The research focuses on understanding the challenges faced by alumni, the relevance of the skills acquired during their studies to labor market demands, and the strategies used by alumni in their efforts to secure suitable employment. This study employs a qualitative method, conducting interviews with several alumni to gain insights into the challenges and strategies they encounter as they enter the workforce. The results of the study revealed that most alumni face various challenges, such as intense competition in the tourism industry, a lack of practical work experience during their studies, and market dynamics that have shifted due to technological advancements and the impact of the pandemic. In addition to technical skills like travel management and customer service, non-technical skills such as communication, negotiation, critical thinking, and adaptability are highly sought after by companies. Some alumni recognize the need to develop networks and participate in additional training or certifications to enhance their competitiveness in the job market. While some alumni struggle to find jobs in the tourism sector, many successfully find employment in other fields that require similar skills, such as hospitality, logistics, and event management. This research provides recommendations for educational institutions to strengthen internship programs and increase collaboration with the industry. Additionally, alumni are advised to continuously update their skills and leverage digital opportunities in their job search.

Abstract:
This research sought to assess how external communication is employed for purposes of motivating alumni to support their former public secondary schools. It sought to reveal the preferred modes of external communication to alumni by school administrators; the factors that influenced the choice of these communication methods; and the influence these modes had on alumni participation. Public secondary schools in Zambia make up 87% of the total population of secondary schools but experience resource challenges, worsened following implementation of free education policy through increased student enrolments. Despite termly government funding ranging between K237,000 per school with the most streams per grade, to K96,000 per schools with the least, as well as access to Constituency Development Fund, challenges have persisted, necessitating the need for alternative funding from stakeholders, including alumni. Descriptive survey design was used, where structured questionnaires were distributed to 51 randomly sampled school administrators. Data was analysed using SPSS to compute descriptive and inferential statistics. Social media topped the means of communication among 78% of respondents. Availability of contact details for alumni, M=4.68, SD=0.769, was the highest factor influencing effective communication. For all respondents, 59% believed that engagement improved due to strategic communication. By event type, communication frequency significantly associated with alumni engagement at r = 0.715. Event attendance highest, M = 4.79, SD = 0.859, then promoting the school in public spaces M = 4.66, SD = 0.872, followed by donation to fundraising initiatives, M = 4.50, SD = 0.549 and volunteering in school programs, M = 4.16, SD = 0.588. Challenges included obsolete alumni databases and inadequate technological infrastructure for effective communication. Recommendations included strengthening digital communication infrastructure, improved contact management systems and crafting communication based on alumni preferred communication modes.

Abstract:
This article discusses the role of Alumni of the PAI Study Program in preparing for the demographic bonus in the era of the Industrial Revolution 4.0. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method, aiming to analyze the contributions of PAI alumni in addressing the opportunities and challenges posed by the demographic shift. The research results show that PAI alumni play a role in shaping religious perspectives, motivating social change, and adapting to industrial transformations. However, challenges remain, such as the need for balanced time management, frequent policy adjustments, and alignment with technological advancements. The implementation of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) in the community is influenced by several structural, substantive, and cultural factors. Structurally, the effectiveness of alumni contributions depends on the availability of competent guidance personnel. Substantively, the alignment of educational policies with contemporary societal needs affects implementation. Culturally, the support of families and communities enhances the impact of alumni efforts. Addressing these factors collectively fosters a more holistic approach to religious education in the era of Industry 4.0. The success of alumni contributions is also supported by active participation from parents, families, and communities. By ensuring a collaborative effort in religious education, the role of PAI alumni in optimizing the demographic bonus can be more effective and sustainable.

Sera, Alum. "Protection or violation : challenges of reintegrating and rehabilitating child victims of war in Northern Uganda (1998-2011) / Alum Sera." Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/14425.

Full text
Abstract:
The use of children in war is one of the most universally condemned human rights abuses in the world, yet a large number of children are currently believed to be fighting in over 30 conflicts around the globe. While many of them die before they are released, others escape, are rescued or are returned by their captors. These children then face the daunting task of being rehabilitated and reintegrated into society. Despite the broad nature of the issue, and its huge individual and societal impacts, relatively little is known about child victims of war, their time in service and their experience of reintegration. The Uganda government with hundreds of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO) is assisting child victims of war in northern Uganda, however, there's still a limited impact on the situation. Formerly abducted children still face tremendous amounts of difficulty upon their return to society and remain invisible in policy making and practice. As such, this research seeks to understand the challenges and experiences faced by these children while in captivity as well as upon their return to family and community. Previous research with child victims of war has documented varying outcomes among this group of a war affected society, suggesting that the processes of ending the conflict in northern Uganda are taking place. However, not enough has been focused on building evidence specifically around the concrete reasons and ways in which the government and all stakeholders involved arc protecting, rehabilitating and reintegrating the child victims of war. This research therefore shows how a number of children were abducted and their livelihood upon return. It highlights the resilience of these children in the midst of conflict and their strong will and ability to rebuild their lives. The thesis describes the experiences of the Acholi and Lango child victims of war within the Lord 's Resistance Army (LKA), and upon return to their families and community, and offers a critical look at all efforts made by all the stakeholders involved in the reintegration and rehabilitation of these children. It also provides suggestions and recommendations on how to improve and create successful outcomes in protecting the children of northern Uganda.
Thesis (M. Soc Sci. Abstract:
Since 2012, the Vienna Master of Arts in Human Rights has combined diverse disciplines with students from a multitude of academic and professional backgrounds thus pioneering interdisciplinary human rights education. Students of the Vienna Master programme were taught how to identify human rights issues and acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes to effectively address them. The focus of their studies was not only on existing legal frameworks but also on applying an interdisciplinary approach, understanding underlying dynamics and factors and developing multi-level strategies to overcome these issues. It is from the development of these skills that this volume takes its name, Confronting Challenges. The present volume contains a selection of the best theses of the Vienna Master´s fifth generation alumni. They cover varied and timely human rights issues, ranging from the rights of old(er) persons, the lived experiences of sex workers, reproductive medicine legislation relevant for LGBTIAQ+ persons, childhood statelessness in Europe to the exploitation of talibés in Mauritania.

Abstract:
Colleges and universities stand to benefit greatly when businesspeople engage with them, whether through governing boards, alumni associations, consulting arrangements, philanthropy, or other channels. But many businesspeople are frustrated by the way institutions of higher education work--or rather, how they don't work. Why do decisions in universities take so long and involve so many people? Why aren't profit and growth top priorities for colleges? Why can't the faculty be managed like any other employees? Shouldn't alumni have a greater say as they continue to invest in their alma mater? As leaders in higher education, James W. Dean Jr. and Deborah Y. Clarke have years of experience addressing these questions for a wide range of professionals outside the academy. This book draws on their expertise to offer real-world guidance for businesspeople who work with and seek to improve colleges and universities. Dean and Clarke differentiate and clarify the motivations and structures that make universities unique among American enterprises. And while they acknowledge the challenges that businesspeople often face when working with academic institutions, they explain that understanding the distinct mission of higher education is essential to being able to effect change within these organizations. Presenting insights from interviews with a wide range of stakeholders, Dean and Clarke give succinct and practical advice for working with universities.

Abstract:
Throughout the first three decades of the twentieth century, alumni and students from historically black colleges and universities contributed to the American Protestant mission movement in West Africa. Those contributions extended beyond the manual labor endeavors promoted by Booker T. Washington and the Phelps Stokes Fund; African American missionaries also adapted classical studies and self-help ideology to a transnational context. This book analyzes the effects and significance of black education strategies through the ministries of Althea Brown and Alonzo Edmiston from 1902 to 1941. Brown specialized in language, music, and cultural analysis while her husband engaged in preaching, agricultural research, and mediation on behalf of the American Presbyterian Congo Mission in what became the Belgian Congo. Personal and professional partnership motivated the two missionaries to interpret their responsibilities as a combination of training from Fisk University, Tuskegee Institute, and Stillman Institute. Each of these institutions held a symbolic meaning in the contexts of the Southern Presbyterian Church and European colonialism in Africa. Denominational administrators and colonial officials understood African American missionaries as leaders with the potential to challenge racial hierarchies. This perception influenced the shifting relations between African Christians and black missionaries during the development of village churches. The Edmistons’ pedagogical interest in adapting to local conditions encouraged Presbyterian converts and students to promote their interests and their authority within the Congo Mission. At the same time, occasional segregation and expulsion of African American missionaries from overseas ministry enabled them to influence early civil rights activities in the American South.

Abstract:
This ethnography provides a theoretically informed account of the educational journeys of students in girls’ madrasas in India. It focuses on the unfolding of young women’s lives as they journey from home to madrasa and beyond. Using a series of ethnographic portraits and bringing together the analytical concepts of community, piety, and aspiration, it highlights the fluidity of the essences of the ideal pious Muslim woman. It illustrates how the madrasa becomes a site where the ideals of Islamic womanhood are negotiated in everyday life. At one level, girls value and adopt practices taught in the madrasa as essential to the practice of piety (amal). At another level, there is a more tactical aspect to cultivating one’s identity as a madrasa-educated Muslim girl. The girls invoke the virtues of safety, modesty, and piety learnt in the madrasa to reconfigure conventional social expectations around marriage, education, and employment. This becomes more apparent in the choices exercised by the girls after leaving the madrasa, highlighted in this book through narratives of madrasa alumni pursuing higher education at a central university in Delhi. The focus on journeys of girls over a period of time, in different contexts, complicates the idealized and coherent notions of piety presented by anthropological literature on women’s participation in Islamic piety projects. Further, the educational stories of girls challenge the media and public representations of madrasas in India, which tend to caricature them as outmoded religious institutions with little relevance to the educational needs of modernizing India. Mapping madrasa students’ personal journeys of becoming educated while leading pious lives allows us to see how these young women are reconfiguring notions of Islamic womanhood.

Abstract:
Abstract Algorithmically generated personas (AGPs) can provide actionable insights into the needs, preferences, and behaviours of stakeholders, including Applicants, Students, Alumni, Faculty, and Staff (ASAFS) for progressive education at higher education institutes (HEIs) in Qatar. AGPs empower data-based decision-making, and contribute to progressive education by representing stakeholders in an empathic format. This chapter sheds light on the pivotal role of alumni, showing how the innovative approach of using personas enables the “beyond education” concept, while providing strategic foresight for HEIs in Qatar. Machine learning models can generate AGPs as humanised representations of these key stakeholders. Building on our multi-year experience in studying AGPs, we argue that these personas can significantly aid HEI decision-makers in designing more learner-centred and inclusive curricula, pedagogy, and assessment via empathic understanding. While AGPs have been prevalent in marketing or design, their potential remains largely unexplored in HEIs.

Apart from the core missions of teaching, research, and innovation, universities nurture leaders, tackle grand challenges, promote shared goals and values, and are fundamental to the culture and spirit of a place. They garner support from alumni who feel a natural bond and from benefactors who seek to invest in progress, thus building their own social capital. Educational philanthropy ensures growth of the university and shapes its community’s social, economic, and technological development. This chapter explores the principles, ideas and metheodologies as universities in Asia engage their community and stakeholders. This is both an art and science that involves branding, outreach, networking and, ultimately, a philosophy of giving.

Abstract The London School of Economics (LSE) joins CERN as an established partner of the Future Circular Collider (FCC) Study, a project that touches many fields in and beyond physics. This volume coincides with the first steps of Horizon Europe in hopes of informing research and innovation planning. The challenges and scepticism facing Big Science were discussed but, despite them, we stand firm in support of the society-wide benefit of scientific projects of such magnitude. In concluding this volume, this article sums these perspectives, drawn from the joint CERN-LSE Alumni Association Belgium workshop held in 2019. Earlier, wider and greater benefits flow from Big, multi-disciplinary Science. These benefits are greatest when the core project is developed in open interaction with youth, local and global communities, engaging ecosystems capable of nurturing early spin-off innovation.

AbstractAlthough publicly-funded universities receive financial support from governments for teaching, research and infrastructure, they require additional sources of income in order to survive and thrive, and particularly to allow innovation and strategic development. It is amongst the responsibilities of the university leadership to ensure financial viability and to seek novel sources of funding, tasks for which they are not always well-trained. In this chapter, the author draws on his experience as a university leader on two continents to illustrate the possibilities as well as some of the hurdles and challenges. The chapter includes sections on philanthropy; alumni relations; industry/business relationships; commercialisation of research; and digital technologies & future horizons. Universities need to diversify their income streams, invest to succeed and get better at demonstrating their societal worth. AbstractThis case addresses the challenge of leadership succession in a highly respected master’s program at a university in Australia. The director, who was also the program’s lead professor, was due to retire, and the distinctive nature of the program made it particularly difficult to find a suitable replacement. To complicate the challenge, the university’s central administration was not supportive of that master’s degree, whereas it achieved the highest satisfaction ratings in the university from students and enjoyed good support from industry; the director’s insistence on quality of educational experience resulted in tight control of student admission, fewer students, and lower revenue than competing programs.A highly engaged group of students and alumni took on this challenge, working with the outgoing director to sustain impressive results over a 5-year period.

AbstractRacism is prevalent within higher education, be it the attainment/degree awarding gap, lack of staff progression or the hostile environment which excludes Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) students and staff. This article focuses on a student-led co-creation project which developed a video resource and interactive talking workshop to raise a call to action against racism in higher education. Undergraduate and alumni students from a range of disciplinary backgrounds contributed by sharing personal experiences and re-enacting stories of other students and staff. The resource was used as a student-led teaching tool as a way of empowering them to become anti-racist and challenge racism. This article outlines this co-created project and the empirical evaluation for the scheme. The authors conclude that higher education institutions need to recognise the importance of safe, co-created spaces to facilitate student voices and to encourage ways in which shared stories can facilitate a call to action in anti-racist work.

Abstract:
Conventional ceramic technology is a widespread technique for synthesizing a large range of materials for household use and engineering applications. However, for advanced technical ceramics different approaches should be used in order to obtain materials with unique physical properties. Despite the well-known technology for the synthesis of alumina-based ceramics, there are a lot of challenges in optimizing manufacturing conditions or integrating the newest technologies. In particular, there are still some challenges in sintering porous bulk ceramics. In this paper, we report on synthesizing mixed-phase porous α-Al2O3 by modernized ceramic technology method. Precursor powders for compaction were obtained by the hydrothermal method in a Teflon vessel. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy were used to characterize the synthesized samples. It was demonstrated that hydrothermal precursors with chemical residuals make it possible to synthesize porous ceramics with an open porosity of 55–80% and an apparent density of 0.76–1.80 g/cm3. The change in microstructure of sintered samples is explained by precursor powder morphology. The developed approaches can be used in modernized ceramic technology to synthesize porous oxide materials for filters of gases and liquids or refractories.

Abstract:
Abstract The electroplating of aluminum has represented a challenge for the coatings industry for decades. The reactivity of aluminum metal leads to a very negative reduction potential. This leads to abundant gas evolution instead of aluminum reduction in water. Current aluminum deposition technology overcomes this limitation by excluding oxygen and water from the process with rigorously dry solvent and airtight plating tanks. These adaptations yield metallic aluminum depositions with significant impurities affecting its properties. In addition, this approach requires a great capital investment and cost of process maintenance. An alternative approach to Al electrodeposition has been developed based on the the use of organic ligands to stabilize the Al3+ ion in water-based solutions. By using a ligation approach, we can create aluminum species that remain stable in water while lowering the reduction potential of the aluminum complex by 0.5V. This improvement in reduction potential gives the possibility for the deposition of aluminum without significant competition from hydrogen evolution. With this platform we can deposit highly adherent aluminum-based layers on metal surfaces. The aluminum/aluminum oxide layers appear as thin, coherent and highly adherent coatings. This aluminum/alumina layer can then be chemically treated to achieve desirable surface properties which were previously inaccessible. For example, the coating can be made hydrophobic, highly adherent to different polymer coatings or even dyed using common anodizing dyes.

Abstract:
Constant and rapid global economic and social developments and environmental processes create considerable new challenges, but also new opportunities for bio-economy. Entrepreneurs have a crucial role harnessing the new opportunities and addressing the challenges through innovation. The aim of the present paper is to study the entrepreneurship activities and entrepreneurial competencies of Estonian university graduates in the fields connected with bio-economy. The paper studies the data from a survey of three Estonian universities carried out in 2016 in the program “Systemic Development of Entrepreneurship education throughout all educational levels”. The analysis focuses on the share of entrepreneurs, assessments of the entrepreneurship competencies among the alumni, who graduated university in the fields of agriculture, forestry, fisheries; life-sciences, and veterinary medicine, and on their comparison with alumni of the other curricula. Chi-square test, ANOVA are used the compare the entrepreneurship activities, competencies of alumni of different curricula. The results show that the graduates’ field of study had significant impact on their entrepreneurship activities after the graduation, and on the attainment of entrepreneurship competencies. A quarter of the agriculture, forestry and fisheries, and a fifth of veterinary alumni were entrepreneurs, although a significantly smaller share of them in comparison with graduates of other fields had received entrepreneurship education during their studies. The share of entrepreneurs was lowest among all the fields of study in case of life-sciences alumni. The study demonstrates the need to integrate entrepreneurship education into the agricultural and life-sciences education and to address the attainment of key competencies in university’s curricula.

This paper covers issues in moving an Institute of 10,000 students and faculty online and managing the services. Here are some of the processes and innovations we set up to achieve this: Laptops and internet connections were arranged for needy students through Alumni donations. A Help Desk operated from 800am to 1200 midnight. The highest call load was observed at the beginning of the semester and during exams. Typical problems were ‘password not working’ and ‘not able to take the exam due to connection problems’. Faculty were trained on pedagogical issues in online teaching, and best practices on How to engage students in live lectures, especially for large classes that needed attention. LMS enhancements and integration with video conferencing platforms enabled automatic attendance marking for live lectures. Assessments posed issues. Student bandwidth would be erratic, creating problems while submitting the answer scripts. Platform logs were analyzed to check if the complaint was genuine (due to bandwidth) or spurious. Cheating during exams: Apart from proctored platforms like ProctorU and Codetantra, innovations like using Zoom simultaneously with the LMS were tried. Low value and continuous evaluation seem to reduce cheating. Differently abled persons needed special attention.

Abstract:
At the 2015 International Hospital Federation (IHF) World Congress in Chicago, Illinois, USA, the Global Consortium for Healthcare Management Professionalization presented a call to action to professionalize the field of healthcare management. Governments and organizations that seek to realize the benefits of professional healthcare managers may meet this challenge by providing educational opportunities to established executives who are positioned to lead and ultimately mentor future managers. This paper introduces a case example of an executive graduate program in health administration, delivered by a university in the United States in partnership with the Ministry of Health in Saudi Arabia, with the aim of developing Saudi healthcare professionals as healthcare leaders. We share challenges, experiences and insights related to adapting a US curriculum for the Saudi working executives during a time of transformation in the Kingdom. We also provide a detailed description of the Executive Management Study, an applied synthesis activity required for all executive learners in the program. Results of an alumni survey are incorporated to demonstrate graduates’ perceptions of the effectiveness of the learning experience.

Abstract:
Undergraduates receive many benefits from participation in research activities, including exposure to advanced topics, introduction to research methods, and direct interaction with faculty and other students. Faculty and institutions benefit as well — fresh eyes in research projects, more energized research groups, and more engaged alumni. However, there are some challenges in designing a research program to work primarily with undergraduates. These include the students’ lack of exposure to advanced topics, short tenure on the project, and potentially lower commitment to the results. There are a number of ways to address these concerns, however. Short student tenure and limited student experience may be offset by breaking up a long-term project into manageable short-term chunks, identifying specific deliverables for each student, and implementing a rigorous data reporting and storage system. Student motivation may be enhanced by linking performance to grades or to an external competition. This paper presents results of using these and other techniques in a multi-disciplinary vehicle sensing research project involving sixteen undergraduates over a three-year period. Although individual student time on the project ranged from only three to twelve months, all students were able to contribute to the project. Student activities were grouped into individual and small group tasks, each with specific goals and timetables. Rigorous electronic documentation and data storage techniques were employed to enable new students to come up-to-speed quickly. A mix of course credits, supplemental pay, and an intercollegiate competition were used to maintain student motivation. Project successes include high student satisfaction, conference papers, a demonstration pre-crash sensing system, and participation in an international student competition.

Abstract:
In early 2020, Edith Cowan University (ECU) identified the need for a proactive approach to supporting and affirming trans, gender diverse, and non-binary (TGDNB) students, staff, alumni, and the wider community. While there was general support and focus on LGBTIQA+ initiatives broadly at ECU, there were no existing supports to address the unique needs and raise awareness of the experiences of TGDNB people. This paper outlines ECU’s process to develop TGDNB Support Guidelines, including research, forming a working group to drive resource development, consultation from different areas within the university, a launch event, training, and ensuring the document was widely promoted and used after the launch. The paper also identifies the issues TGDNB students are facing, outcomes of the continued work to advocate for trans people at ECU, as well as the challenges we face and goals we continue to work toward.

Full text
Abstract:
The global pandemic has brought renewed attention toward the everyday challenges in informal settlements. COVID-19 reminds us that southern urban life is rooted in ‘collective’ experiences where toilets and kitchens are shared by multiple families; where the categories of work and home, private and public space overlap; and where the majority live in vulnerable conditions. Despite these challenges, some of the most innovative and collective responses to COVID-19 have emerged from these areas. While informal settlements did face a host of risks and vulnerabilities during the pandemic, local responses have highlighted the resilience of informal settlement communities. However, few informal settlements are actually ‘resilient’ and any local responses must be robustly supported by system-wide change including support from local and national governments, improvements to built infrastructure, and improved access to health care services, among other priorities. The category of ‘informal settlements’ also captures a wide range of settlement types, from a legal slum to an informal settlement with no legal status, with many other types in between. This underscores the need to address fundamental issues that ‘perpetuate conditions of inequity, exclusion and vulnerability’ while also recognising the needs and contexts of different kinds of informal settlements. Whether COVID-19 helps governments recognise conditions of insecurity and vulnerability to address safe and secure housing and infrastructures remains to be seen. This is an update to the previous SSHAP brief on ‘COVID-19 in Informal Urban Settlements’ (March 2020). This evidence review highlights local responses, grassroots efforts, and challenges around COVID-19 recovery within urban informal settlements in South Asia. It focuses on specific examples from Karachi, Pakistan and Mumbai, India to inform policy responses for COVID-19 recovery and future epidemic preparedness and response. We show how local level responses are shaped in these cities where national and international responses have not reached communities at municipal and sub-municipal levels. This brief was written by Saba Aslam (IDS Alumni) and Megan Schmidt-Sane (IDS), with reviews from Professor Amita Bhide (Tata Institute of Social Sciences, India), Dr Asad Sayeed (Collective for Social Science Research, Pakistan), Annie Wilkinson (IDS), and contributions from Swati Mishra (LSHTM), Prerana Somani (LSHTM), Saleemullah Odho (Deputy Commissioner, Korangi district Karachi), Dr Noman Ahmed (NED University, Karachi), Tahera Hasan (Imkaan Foundation, Karachi), Atif Khan (District Health Officer, Korangi district Karachi), Dr Harris (District Focal person, Korangi), Aneeta Pasha (Interactive for Research and Development, Karachi), Yasmeen Shah (Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum), Ghulam Mustafa (HANDS Pakistan), and Dr Shehrin Shaila Mahmood (icddr,b).
