Abstract:
Purpose Aftercare is an important predictor of outcomes following treatment for substance abuse. Despite this, there is evidence that the great majority of substance abusing clients choose not to participate in aftercare. Aftercare programs that are tied to specific residential treatment facilities, sometimes known as alumni groups or alumni clubs, might increase participation by offering former residents the opportunity to maintain treatment oriented social networks. Therapeutic communities (TCs), which emphasize mutual aid between residents, are ideal candidates for such programs. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach In total, 100 randomly chosen former TC residents were randomly surveyed regarding their contact with fellow alumni and their exchange of recovery oriented helping behaviors. A thirty day timeline follow-back methodology was used. Findings Contact was primarily through electronic means, particularly phone calls, texts and the alumni club Facebook page. Participants who reported more electronic contact also reported more days in which they offered and received recovery oriented help. Participants who were African American or had spent more time in TC treatment offered and received recovery oriented help on more days. Research limitations/implications While this is an exploratory study limited to one TC, this alumni club allows for the maintenance of a mutual aid network after termination. That network primarily consists of electronic forms of contact. A longer time spent in TC treatment may allow for the internalization of the practice of mutual aid. Further research on alumni clubs is warranted. Originality/value This is the first survey of TC alumni club members.

Abstract:
The paper is the effect of Rector’s Inter-College Grant at Warsaw School of Economics [SGH]: ‘Strengths and Weaknesses of SGH Alumni In The Opinion Of SGH Partners Club’. The purpose of the study was to define the strengths and weaknesses of SGH alumni, based on structured interviews carried out with a group of respondents representing all SGH Partners Club members, the analysis of the literature on the subject and the authors’ own experience. The purpose of the paper is to indicate the answer to two of four questions developed in the study: 1. What competences of the alumni are most significant from the point of view of SGH Partners Club members? 2. In which competences there is a gap? The result of the studies was the ranking of the most important competences, competency gap of the alumni and settling the key factors deciding on employment of a candidate for a job.

Abstract:
Education can play a role in heightening the development of social entrepreneurship (SE) knowledge and skills in a developing country. Malaysia is amongst countries with undesirably low achievement level in the overall social entrepreneurship activity. Hence, efforts need to be enhanced so that the younger generation would be more inclined and motivated to partake in social entrepreneurship to contribute to the existing added value that students already possess. The early cultivation of social entrepreneurship can be detected through informal exposure by students who are actively involved in voluntary projects and developmental community club called ENACTUS. Apart from that, some higher education institutions are offering subjects and short term projects related to social entrepreneurship. The efficacy of SE education will be a yard stick to ensure that more prospective social entrepreneurs are produced in the future. Therefore, a descriptive research has been conducted on 350 ENACTUS members using stratified sampling to explore students and alumni perception on social entrepreneurship. Findings showed that a majority of students agreed if SE education is made a compulsory course in HEI. However, the alumni did not agree with this idea. Although many students and Alumni admitted that they understand the social entrepreneurship concept, nevertheless there are a select few who could not complete their main goal when managing ENACTUS projects. Therefore, they were unable to make their ideologies run concurrently with goals of the projects. This article will attempt to discuss the implications of cultivating the social entrepreneurship culture.

Abstract:
Objective: Health professionals deal with different professional situations. Among them are many which encroach on intimate sphere of the patient. The aim of the research was to evaluate the sexology course, integrated in the basic undergraduate education of midwives, who are, when practicing, dealing with different situations that are closely connected to the patients’ sexuality. Design and Method: The quantitative research method was adopted. The research tool was questionnaire. The link of the online survey was sent to all members of midwifery alumni club of the only midwifery faculty in Slovenia. The questionnaire was composed of mainly closed questions that used Likert scale in order to gather graduates opinions regarding the sexology course. The online survey was chosen since it provided confidentiality to the respondents. Results: 112 graduates participated in the survey, which gave the response rate of 65%. 97% of participants found sexology subject useful for practice of midwifery. They would like to work in smaller groups and to extend the topics over 3 ECTS. Also contents and methods were evaluated and changes were proposed. Conclusions: On the basis of the response of the participants, we can claim that midwives did find the sexology course applicable for their professional work. Qualitative method could be used in the future in order to gain in-depth information regarding the reflections; especially the topics that should be added in the sexology education. Other profiles could also find the course useful, therefore it should be considered to provide it also for nurses and other health students.

Abstract:
While scholars have shown that well-connected applicants are advantaged in selection processes, less understood is whether such applicants produce important returns to the organization when key decision makers favor them. We begin to address this gap by investigating whether and why application endorsements―an informal practice whereby certain individuals (i.e., endorsers) advocate for particular applicants―affect organizational selection during the screening of applicants. Through the analysis of the population of 21,324 applicants to a full-time MBA program over a seven-year period, we find that even after controlling for individual qualifications and competencies, endorsed applicants are advantaged over non-endorsed applicants in admissions interview and offer decisions. In seeking to explain this advantage, we develop and test four key theoretical explanations pertaining to the potential returns on application endorsements for the organization. We find inconsistent evidence that endorsed applicants are “better qualified” compared with non-endorsed applicants during screening: while endorsed applicants are sometimes assessed to be stronger “on paper,” they generally receive lower competency assessments than non-endorsed applicants later, during the admissions interviews. Further, our analysis of data on matriculating MBA students reveals that those endorsed as applicants are not “better performers” academically (measured by grade point average) or in the job market after graduation (measured by full-time salaries or signing bonuses) compared with non-endorsed individuals. In contrast, individuals endorsed as applicants appear to be “better citizens” upon joining the organization—in our research setting, they are more likely to participate in student club leadership roles than non-endorsed individuals. We also find that they are “better alumni”―that is, they make larger monetary donations to the school after graduating than their non-endorsed counterparts. We conclude with implications for understanding the impact of application endorsements on labor and educational markets.

Through the analysis of alumni survey data from three graduating cohorts, this study examined the influence of interaction with international students on domestic students’ college outcomes and explored factors that helped to promote international interaction on college campuses. The findings indicate that in comparison to non-interactive domestic students, highly interactive domestic students reported significantly higher levels of development in a wide range of areas across the three cohorts. Also, the findings suggest that active engagement in college activities, such as coursework outside the major, contact with faculty outside class, ethnic or cultural clubs or organizations, and visiting speakers, was likely to promote interaction across cultures.

Abstract:
We draw on 120 years of biographical data ( N = 120,764) contained within Who’s Who—a unique catalogue of the British elite—to explore the changing relationship between elite schools and elite recruitment. We find that the propulsive power of Britain’s public schools has diminished significantly over time. This is driven in part by the wane of military and religious elites, and the rise of women in the labor force. However, the most dramatic declines followed key educational reforms that increased access to the credentials needed to access elite trajectories, while also standardizing and differentiating them. Notwithstanding these changes, public schools remain extraordinarily powerful channels of elite formation. Even today, the alumni of the nine Clarendon schools are 94 times more likely to reach the British elite than are those who attended any other school. Alumni of elite schools also retain a striking capacity to enter the elite even without passing through other prestigious institutions, such as Oxford, Cambridge, or private members clubs. Our analysis not only points to the dogged persistence of the “old boy,” but also underlines the theoretical importance of reviving and refining the study of elite recruitment.

Abstract:
The purpose of this preliminary research is to identify corporate talents’ positioning of the UiTM graduates especially the Generation X, within the industries. At the same time, there is also the need to ascertain the factors that contributed to the success of the UiTM Generation X graduates. Majority of the research which have been conducted on the graduates involved the employability rate. However, none has been carried out in identifying the graduates’ career accomplishment. The sample of this research consisted of 191 UiTM graduates who are born between 1965 until 1985 (known as the Generation X). The responses were obtained via an online survey sent to random groups in UiTM emails. In addition, Facebook was also used as a medium in dissemininating the survey forms to random individuals whom has connections with the Generation X alumni. Rasch Measurement Model was employed by using the software WINSTEP 3.72.3, to measure the reliability and validity of the instrument. SPSS version 21 was used to answer the research objective of the study. The result has produced a fair person reliability at +0.66 while the Cronbach Alpha reliability value was at 0.72 and an excellent item reliability of 0.99. In terms of career positioning, 60% of the Generation- falls within the middle management position. This reflects the success of the Gen-X where most of them were able to obtain posts like lecturers, engineers and managers. As for the factors which contributed to the success of the alumni, it was found that involvement in clubs, soft skills and orientation towards religion play important roles in determining the career position of GenX. These findings validate past research and demonstrate that the pattern continues into the present. Surprisingly, it was found that academic achievement, hard skills and personality traits hardly had any influence on the career positions of the Gen-X. It was also discovered that the success of the Gen-X could be due to other factors which is beyond the horizon of this research. Therefore, it was recommended that students should be encouraged to be actively involved in clubs. This must be balanced with religious values exposure so that they know the limit of their involvement.

Abstract:
In the article, the concept of readiness for professional career growth of postgraduate students majoring in 011 Educational, Pedagogical Sciences has been defined. The principles of training postgraduate students of the third (educational and scientific) level of higher education have been revealed. They are: "flexibility"; the relationship between labour and vocational training; the unity of professional competences, interest and practical orientation; the integrity of education. A typical career trajectory was presented in three variants. The article proved that the analysis of motives for professional growth begins at the stage of admission to postgraduate courses. An appropriate place in the content of postgraduates’ training is given to the disciplines ensuring the development of universal basic skills (soft skills): "Academically and professionally oriented communication (“English / German / French / Ukrainian / Russian)", "Grant and Project Activities", "World Development and Domestic Pedagogical Thought". The development of universal skills of the researcher is provided by disciplines of applicants’ free choice ("Theoretical Foundations of Didactic Research", "Current Issues of Comparative Research", "History of Pedagogy as a Science and Direction of Pedagogical Research", etc.). The training for further career growth is closely related to the introduction of innovative technologies within general, active and interactive teaching methods (modelling of professional situations, role-playing games, storytelling, case study method, elements of cooperative learning) (group practical tasks), discussion, master class, etc.). A proper place in the educational process is given to research and teaching (pedagogical) practice. The university is working to form a "feedback" system with graduates and leading employers in the field of higher education. In particular, the Association of Alumni, a network of clubs alongside creative and sports teams were created. The membership in the Council of Young Scientists, which operates at the university, is an incentive for career growth in scientific activity.

Abstract:
The Student Recreation Center provides a state-of-the-art facility and a comprehensive recreation program for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and spouses. It aids in the education and development of the whole person and serves as a place of employment for students. More than just a place to exercise, the recreation center also serves as a venue for education: users develop positive self-esteem, enhance their social relationships, and improve their interpersonal skills. The recreation center provides a unique site for programs and activities aimed at meeting the needs, interests, and expectations of a diverse community. Opportunities for interaction, collaboration, and unification are essential if campuses are to develop a sense of community. Reports from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Wingspread Group on Higher Education serve to challenge university administrators in their struggle to create a sense of community. In as much as campus recreation centers have the capacity to engage members of the campus community in exciting, creative, and unique experiences they can provide the means to attract diverse populations. Often open 16–18 hours each day, there is no other single facility on a college campus that can provide as many varied activities with such wide appeal. Conventional programs such as intramurals, sport clubs and aerobics programs serve individuals in a variety of sports and recreational activities from basketball to scuba diving. Wellness programs offer health and educational services and outdoors recreation programs provide opportunities to develop skills for life-long enjoyment. Student recreation centers can serve as sites for day camp programs for children. Community members at large receive passes at nominal fees when student enrollment declines during the summer months. Recreation centers provide opportunities for students to interact with one another, as well as other sectors of the community. Research shows that this aids in both recruitment and retention. University administrators must continue their efforts to foster student learning and personal development. Student recreation centers can contribute significantly to that end by providing the facilities, programs, services and personnel to help meet those challenges.

Abstract:
11042 Background: While the American Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) set up a Planning Committee for Diversity in GME in 2018, no formalized milestones or training mandates have been announced. The nation-wide protests for racial justice following the senseless killings of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and George Floyd further brought to the forefront the need for immediate action to address widespread inequities across graduate medical education, our healthcare system and society as a whole. Therefore, the Johns Hopkins Hematology/Medical Oncology Fellowship Program focused on creating an anti-racism curriculum to foster dialogue on systemic racism and discrimination, grounded in the institutional and geographic context of our training program. Methods: Using the Kern six step curriculum development method, we created a comprehensive anti-racism initiative, which included virtual townhalls with Black alumni of the fellowship, book clubs, readings, and lectures. We sought to deepen the fellowship’s awareness of the impact of racism and inequity upon trainees, underrepresented minority oncologists and hematologists, and patients in order to develop initiatives to confront them productively. Trainees received a survey 6 months after the start of the curriculum to assess the impact of the initiatives upon trainees, and inform iterative changes to the curriculum. Results: 25 of 34 fellows across all post-graduate years (PGY) completed the survey. Fellows agreed that the curriculum was helpful (68%) and encouraging (60%). Collectively, fellows reported that the curriculum increased their awareness of instances of racism in medicine, caused them to think about next steps that the fellowship could take to address racism, and enabled them to identify available resources for support and further education. Respondents selected community engagement and recruitment of diverse fellowship classes as the most pressing priorities for the program. Conclusions: Social justice and anti-racism education belong in the formalized training of our hematology/medical oncology fellows. To this end, our ongoing curricular expansion is focusing on anti-racism training, diverse recruitment and youth mentorship. Collectively, a comprehensive yet program-specific approach facilitates opportunities for learning, engagement and development of the skills necessary to engage in this life-long work for ourselves, our communities and our patients.

Abstract:
Abstract Background Among former Olympic-level athletes, engagement in different sport disciplines has been associated with mortality risk in subsequent years. However, limited evidence is available on whether engagement in different sport disciplines at a young age is associated with locomotive syndrome (LS) risk later in life. This study examined the relationship between engagement in different sport disciplines during university years and LS risk in older age among former university athletes. Methods Participants were 274 middle-aged and 294 older men alumni who graduated from a school of physical education in Japan. LS risk was defined as answering “yes” to any of the Loco-check questions. Data on university sports club membership were collected using questionnaires. University clubs were classified into three groups of cardiovascular intensity (low, moderate, high), following the classification system of sport disciplines by the American College of Cardiology. This classification considers the static and dynamic components of an activity, which correspond to the estimated percent of maximal voluntary contraction reached and maximal oxygen uptake achieved, respectively. University clubs were grouped based on the risk of bodily collision (no, yes) and extent of physical contact (low, moderate, high). Relationships between engagement in different sport disciplines and LS risk were analyzed using Cox proportional hazards models, and adjusted for age, height, weight, joint disease, habitual exercise, and smoking and drinking status. Results Adjusted hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals associated with the low, moderate, and high cardiovascular intensity sports were 1.00 (reference), 0.48 (0.22–1.06, P = 0.070), and 0.44 (0.20–0.97, P = 0.042) in older men, respectively; however, there was no significant association between these parameters among middle-aged men. Engagement in sports associated with physical contact and collision did not affect LS risk in either group. Conclusions Engagement in sports associated with high cardiovascular intensity during university years may reduce the risk of LS in later life. Encouraging young people to participate in such activities might help reduce LS prevalence among older populations.
