Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to describe the strategies of interaction with alumni and suggest directions for their inclusion in the managerial arsenal of the central administration of the university. The Far Eastern Federal University, relatively recently created on the basis of four independent universities, three of which were strongly industry-oriented, provides rich material for research on strategies of interaction with alumni that have developed in its various structural divisions. At the same time, most of these strategies are not initiated by the central administration, and the biggest part of them even is out of its view. Strategies for interaction with alumni arise as forms of reproduction, increment and conversion of the social capital of alumni, leaders of the academic community and several departments of the university. The university appears to researchers as a kind of “exchange office”, in which there is a constant movement of different types of capital, the main of which is social and its subspecies – alumni capital.

Abstract:
Alumni relations is a comparatively new sphere for Russian universities. Universities are trying to build new culture of the relationships with alumni from scratch. This article examines this challenge through interviewing deans of typical Russian multi-field University. Based on 11 semi-structured interviews, the article explores such topics as university culture, institutionalisation, communication, attitudes, and how both alumni and alma mater can benefit from cooperation. Relying on the theoretical frameworks of social fields and social capital, the article elaborates what theoretical and practical principles underlie effective alumni relations policy. The findings set five principles of alumni relations policy: 1) openness of the university and its campus for all alumni; 2) institutionalisation of the communities of stable social fields; 3) support of informal communities and individual ambassadors; 4) support of evolving communities at the university; and 5) development of alumni relations formats and practices. Considering the absence of a culture of material help and donations, such support cannot be the focus of alumni relations work. Instead, solid interpersonal relationships should be built, promoting the values of trust and cooperation, where alumni associations and informal communities play real role.

Abstract:
Abstract: In order to leverage the relationship with alumni, universities strive to create an environment in which alumni would feel comfortable connecting, being part of the community, and realizing their volunteer and philanthropic potential. Such an environment also helps the university establish traditions of alumni relations that can ultimately lead to the achievement of the university's strategic goals, a sizable financial support and an active alumni community that broadcast success, knowledge and philanthropy. We started by surveying alumni about how much they were willing to be involved in supporting the alumni association, and how much time and money they were willing to invest. This article provides a short analysis of the literature on which the methods were selected, and the results of interviews with graduates were formed. The study was held in October 2023, stratified sampling method was used with five focus-groups. The article also contains information about the university, recommendations for future researchers and possible limitations. The findings suggest that future analysis of Kazakhstani alumni engagement should encompass the following elements: volunteer activities, fundraising, communication in social networks, and professional education. The results of this study could serve as a foundation for formulating communication strategies for young universities in Kazakhstan concerning their alumni relations. The study sheds light on the alumni lower willingness to engage in volunteer work, act as donors, offer contributions more focused on the educational process, and share their experiences. Keywords: alumni engagement; alumni relations; alumni interactions; alumni challenges; Kazakhstani University. Title: Alumni engagement analysis in Kazakhstan: a case study for non-state commercial university Author: Yekaterina Smolyakova, Assem Syrlybay International Journal of Recent Research in Thesis and Dissertation (IJRRTD) Vol. 5, Issue 1, January 2024 - June 2024 Page No: 51-56 Paper Publications Website: www.paperpublications.org Published Date: 18-January-2024 DOI: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.10526730 Paper Download Link (Source) https://www.paperpublications.org/upload/book/Alumni%20engagement%20analysis%20in%20Kazakhstan-18012024-2.pdf

Abstract:
The purpose for conducting the study was to explore and describe the use of alumni societies and associations in community colleges, particularly focusing on the intended outcome of their implementation. To collect data for the study, a research-team developed survey instrument was distributed electronically to 250 community college advancement senior leaders. A total of 106 (42%) usable surveys were returned for use in the study. The results of the data collection and analysis described community college expectations for alumni societies, and that this expectation was primarily focused on fundraising. The societies were also critical, however, in career placement for students, developing career-oriented programs, and reviewing curricula. Survey results also indicated that many community college leaders use alumni societies in creative ways, including assisting in faculty searches, hosting recruitment events, and teaching community education (lifelong learning) courses. Study findings are critical for college leaders who are often faced with difficulties in funding existing or new programing. The respondents to the study illustrated how alumni societies can serve as critical catalysts for improving existing programs and expanding the reach and value of the institution. Findings also suggest that alumni societies are perceived to be strong gateways to developing philanthropic support for institutions.

Abstract:
Most alumni studies were studied with a theoretical background involving microeconomic strategies, charity contribution literature, management, marketing relations, marketing services, science education, and integrative approaches. Research in the field of communication strategy in determining alumni loyalty that is directly related to the field and theoretical communication is minimal. There is no empirical evidence from the point of view of strategic communication that proves the relationship between the university's efforts and alumni's contribution to the university. Some studies have suggested the application of customer relationship management in universities. Through customer relationship management, analysis of communication needs between the university, students, and alumni can be identified. Therefore, this paper aims to describe the communication strategy carried out by the University through the Alumni Center to establish good relations with the alumni. This study was carried out using a qualitative method which is interviews. An interview session was held with the Director of the Alumni Center, six former Directors, and an administrative officer who has served the Alumni Center for several years since its establishment. The results of the study found that various strategies have been carried out by the UUM Alumni Center that can be linked to communication strategies. These include the channel strategy, message strategy, branding strategy, collaboration strategy, and social marketing strategy. The results of this study contribute to strategic communication, considering that the fields of marketing management, economics, and educational science mostly pioneer the highlights of alumni research literature.

Cowell-Lucero, Jamie Lynn. "Good practices of alumni relations professionals leading engagement programs and volunteers in colleges of agriculture at land-grant institutions." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/104066.

Full text
Abstract:
With each new cohort of directors entering the field of alumni relations in agriculture, a pattern emerges. They often are not adequately prepared to assume the responsibilities of the position. There is a perception that attention to detail and event planning skills are sufficient qualifications to manage an alumni volunteer program successfully. Managing the people and activities involved with the programs in the ever-growing field of alumni relations requires much more than event planning know-how. Implementing impactful alumni engagement programs requires knowledge of leading and managing programs, budgets, and people, specifically volunteers. Alumni engagement involves extensive communication skills and, depending on the institution, knowledge of board organization procedures As we all strive to advance agriculture, we must put in place qualified individuals to engage our alumni and stakeholders, specifically volunteers. Are there programs in place to provide training for the candidates selected? Are resources readily available that provide good practices for these individuals to follow as they build their alumni volunteer programs? Although there is a demand for more rigorous and sophisticated professional practice, there continues to be a gap between research and practice in the field of volunteer administration (Seel, 2013). Resources available for volunteer managers are often how-to manuals with practical suggestions and approaches (Fisher and Cole, 1993). Associations such as the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), the National Agricultural Alumni and Development Association (NAADA), and BoardSource® provide opportunities for networking with colleagues through conferences and online resources. Still, these are often costly and fragmented with regard to the presentation of content. The purpose of the study was to examine how alumni relations professionals are prepared to carry out their roles and responsibilities as administrators of alumni engagement programs and volunteers in colleges of agriculture at land-grant institutions. The study sought to describe good practices for support, training, communication, and volunteer management that can be utilized by new members of the field and seasoned veterans alike. Thirteen current alumni relations professionals in agriculture at land-grant institutions who are members of NAADA were interviewed. Job descriptions were reviewed prior to each interview. Interviews were transcribed by TranscribeMe, Inc., analyzed using a form of whole text analysis with open coding. Common codes were merged to develop the themes. Research Questions 1. How do alumni directors administer alumni engagement programs and associated volunteers? 2. What skills should alumni directors bring to their positions upon employment? 3. How do alumni directors identify individuals or groups to connect to in order to accomplish their goals? 4. How do alumni directors identify and implement communications strategies to make successful connections to use with individuals and/or groups? 5. How do alumni directors continue to improve their skills and knowledge to meet their job expectations related to administering alumni engagement programs and associated volunteers? Through a thematic analysis of the data, the following themes emerged: management of volunteer boards; management of general volunteers; perceptions of alumni directors; engagement with alumni, faculty, and students through events and programs; partnerships with university-level advancement and college leadership; communications tools; and professional development. Overall, the findings were not surprising other than lack of knowledge of volunteer management models or prior experience in volunteer management. Participants who had the support of leadership, who arrived to their positions with at least some background working with volunteers, and those who were willing to try new tactics to engage volunteers set an outstanding example of how success is possible in the role of an alumni director. Communications is a powerful tool for all alumni directors but can also be a significant challenge. Participants who expanded their definition of "volunteer" beyond alumni to include faculty, staff, and students appeared to have better-developed strategies to engage, empower, and lead individuals. Participants who partnered with colleagues in academic programs were better positioned to engage students in programming, find student volunteers and interns to assist in their efforts, and create and maintain stronger connections as they become young alumni. Seven key good practices can be elevated from the data: 1. Familiarize with volunteer management models to understand how and why people are motivated to volunteer and develop skillsets and tactics to recruit, train, retain, and recognize volunteers 2. Empower volunteers to develop their own mission and goals, strategize their plan of work, and lead the execution of their programs and organization 3. Expand the definition of "volunteer" 4. Build collaborative partnerships across the team, college and university 5. Develop innovative approaches and partnerships to engage students 6. Expand professional development resources 7. Advocate for yourself and your program After interviewing thirteen alumni relations professionals, it was clear that those land-grant institutions have passionate, volunteer-centric professionals who diligently work every day towards the mission and goals of the colleges they serve. But there is much work to be done to create an environment that is more supportive of them. Efforts should be made to help college and university leadership better understand the qualifications required for alumni relations positions, elevate alumni engagement and volunteers' impact, and provide more targeted professional development opportunities.
Master of Science in Life Sciences
Good practices of alumni relations professionals leading engagement programs and volunteers in colleges of agriculture at land-grant institutions contribute to the advancement of agriculture. Abstract:
A university has many valuable internal and external publics. It is beneficial for an institution to build, maintain, and leverage its relationships with both internal and external constituency groups. Examining the body of literature on relationship management can provide insight into previously established strategies that yielded positive outcomes and demonstrate the need for additional research about Black alumni, from predominately white institutions, and their feelings toward their alma mater. Relationship management is the notion of public relations as the management of relationships between an organization and its key publics (Ledingham & Bruning, 2000). The relationships that an organization has with its publics can impact many things including perceptions about the organization and organizational wealth.
Master of Arts

Abstract:
The purpose of this exploratory, mixed method study was to examine factors in students‟ university experiences that affected their future alumni engagement with their university. A web-based survey instrument was administered to 1,139 University of Lethbridge bachelor‟s degree holders who graduated during the University‟s first 40 years (1967 to 2007). Results indicate that the foundation for alumni engagement is set early in the student experience and is particularly affected by the nature of the relationships the student has with the institution. Alumni who were engaged as students were more likely to become engaged alumni through volunteer or donor activity. The higher alumni rated their satisfaction with factors present in their student experience and alumni relationship, the higher the likelihood that they stayed connected with and demonstrated their commitment to their alma mater. Recommendations for further research and for designing student and alumni engagement strategies are provided.
xiv, 195 leaves ; 29 cm

Sych, S. "Constructing identities of alumni relations professionals in Central and Eastern European higher education." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2017. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1566714/.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to explore the ways alumni relations (AR) specialists in Central and Eastern European (CEE) higher education institutions construct their professional identities, and factors affecting the construction of these identities. These issues are investigated through the prism of literatures on “alumni relations,” “professionalism” and “identity,” viewing the construction of identity as a reflexive process between individuals and the structures in which they operate. A qualitative analysis has been undertaken with thirteen institutions, comprising in-depth semi-structured interviews with 16 purposefully recruited alumni relations specialists, from eight Central and Eastern European countries. The data gathered throughout this research has been synthesized to explore and map the complex process of constructing professional identity. Given the limitations of this small-scale study and its interpretivist epistemological positioning, a framework has been developed to gain a more nuanced understanding of the topic. Accordingly, three emerging themes have informed the exploration of the AR professional identity construction: how professional identity is manifested; the role of the career trajectory, and institutional context factors. Consequently, some characteristics of a pronounced AR professional identity and factors affecting it, are suggested. The latter include composite institutional structure variables (e.g. peripheral, secondary, support or core AR institutional positioning) and type of career trajectory profile (e.g. specialist, experimenter, and resident). A number of areas associated with inhibiting or facilitating professional identity construction and the development of roles in response to changing contexts have been identified, including a “strained” AR professional identity, the role of institutional leadership and a lack of AR professional development opportunities. Possible future directions for research and implications for practice are discussed, including the role of professional development and key influencers, such as institutional leadership and practitioners with a strong AR professional identity, in fostering AR professional projects, and mitigating factors that inhibit this process.

Schultz, Michael. "Elucidating the Role of the University CEO's Spouse in Development, Alumni Relations, and Fund Raising." ScholarWorks @ UVM, 2009. http://scholarworks.uvm.edu/graddis/213.

Abstract:
Historically fund raising, or development, in higher education was the purview of only private four-year colleges; today, however, virtually all institutions of higher education are engaged in this endeavor. Attaining an institution‘s fundraising goals has become an integral part of a university president‘s or chancellor‘s role, consuming a high percentage of the CEO‘s time. While the president works very closely with the development office in garnering private support, there is often another player significant to the success of a university‘s development efforts. ―Hired‖ along with the CEO, the individual serves a major role, but has no job description and often works without a contract or remuneration. This is the spouse of the CEO. This study employed qualitative methodology to elucidate the role of the university CEO‘s spouse in development, alumni relations, and fund raising. The research focused on the traditional president‘s spouse, a female married to a male CEO. Seventeen interviews with spouses, development officers, and university trustees at seven different public land-grant universities were conducted to explore several questions: whether the spouse‘s role in development is formalized; whether the spouse was aware of the school‘s expectations for her in this area; the role of professional development staff in assisting the first lady; whether the spouse is recognized or compensated for her duties; how the spouse‘s role could be improved; and what could be done to make the role more satisfying, productive, or efficient. Several thematic areas were addressed regarding the first lady: (a) interview processes, (b) qualities, (c) support of the president, (d) role in development, (e) role in the university community, (f) acknowledgement, and (g) public opinion. The findings provide a multifaceted view of the role of the university president‘s wife in development. Recommendations for improving the role of the presidential spouse in university development include fostering open communication between all parties, tailoring the role to the individuals and institutions involved, and acknowledging the role of the spouse.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter is about the role of capacity building of local NGOs in Sumba, a poor island in the Eastern part of Indonesia. It is part of a larger initiative referred to as Sumba Iconic Island (SII), which aimed to solve poverty problems, transforming unequal gender relations while at the same time mitigating climate change. This study traced what happened after six years after the project ended. It is done by exploring the project documentation and conducting interviews with Hivos staff and the alumni representatives. We find that it has improved nature, community wellbeing, women leadership, and more equal gender relations. We conclude that: (1) transformation is not a linear process; (2) the changes toward the vision are not direct but tortuous; (3) there are unintended consequences, which can be positively or negatively influence the initial goal, and (4) the capacity to analyze the situation, reflect, and create action is crucial in the transformation process.

AbstractAlthough publicly-funded universities receive financial support from governments for teaching, research and infrastructure, they require additional sources of income in order to survive and thrive, and particularly to allow innovation and strategic development. It is amongst the responsibilities of the university leadership to ensure financial viability and to seek novel sources of funding, tasks for which they are not always well-trained. In this chapter, the author draws on his experience as a university leader on two continents to illustrate the possibilities as well as some of the hurdles and challenges. The chapter includes sections on philanthropy; alumni relations; industry/business relationships; commercialisation of research; and digital technologies & future horizons. Universities need to diversify their income streams, invest to succeed and get better at demonstrating their societal worth. Education is one of the most powerful tools of social and economic mobility. The world needs us to succeed!

Abstract:
Background: Job satisfaction in healthcare is of special interest as has a direct relation with the quality of care provided to patients. It is affected by several factors including the nature of the work, level of educational preparedness and achievements. Objectives: This study aims to explore College of Pharmacy - Qatar University (CPH-QU) alumni’s satisfaction with employment and the profession, level of educational preparedness and achievements in the practice. Methods: A sequential exploratory mixed-method designs was adopted. Seven Focus Group (FG) discussions were performed and a self-reported survey distributed to all alumni graduated between 2011-2020. Results: A total of 135 alumni answered the survey (response rate 63%). Majority of respondents were non-Qatari (97%) and 52% of them were recent graduates and obtained doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) as an additional degree (58%). The study findings suggest that CPH alumni are moderately satisfied with the practice and the profession, and Qatari alumni are more satisfied. However, majority of them (44.55%) are not satisfied with the available opportunities for professional development. The level of satisfaction about achievements was significantly high only in the field of research and presentation activities. A general agreement about the level of educational preparedness was dominant, especially in clinical knowledge and skills and experiential training they received. Conclusion: The overall satisfaction about workplace and the profession in CPH-QU alumni is moderate and higher among Qatari graduates. Alumni agreed that they were well prepared to meet the practice requirements and mostly satisfied in achieving research and presentation related activities.

Abstract:
The Alabama Burst Energetics eXplorer (ABEX) is a 12U CubeSat commissioned by the Alabama Space Grant Consortium; its astrophysics mission is to study the low energy, prompt emission of Gamma-ray Bursts in both gamma and X-ray spectra. The ABEX program is unique in that its workforce is comprised of individuals at seven colleges and universities around the state of Alabama. ABEX management releases Requests for Proposals (RFP) for Senior Design (SD) projects or university research groups to design and build spacecraft subsystems; university faculty with experience and facilities for the development of that subsystem respond to the RFPs to create a team. ABEX supports undergraduate SD students, graduate student mentors, and faculty technical advisors for all spacecraft subsystems in both ground and flight mission segments. Each team has between 5-15 undergraduate students, meaning ABEX teaches spacecraft design to ~85 undergraduate students at any given time; ABEX may be the largest collegiate CubeSat program in the world. The undergraduate labor force turns over, or cycles to new students, every 4-8 months, so ABEX can teach hands-on spacecraft design to over 100 students every year and has taught over 200 to date. Two features of ABEX create a difficult Systems Engineering (SE) environment: the undergraduate labor force turnover rate and the geographically disperse workforce. Most subsystem teams exist within two-semester SD courses, but some teams, like Flight Software, only exist for one semester before the undergraduate team turns over. This means the student onboarding process must be efficient and the material hand-off process effective if any substantive contribution to the spacecraft is to be made in their brief course period. A Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) Integrated System Model (ISM) was created using SysML as a full-program organization of mission requirements, subsystem architectures, verification and validation procedures, and team interaction tracking methodologies for workforce turnover effect mitigation with ISM-exported artifacts as central objects of stage-gate reviews. An ABEX website was created with processes for first-time student onboarding, ISM artifact dissemination, and intercollegiate document transfer in addition to being a public relations arm for the program. With education at the forefront of ABEX, educational requirements and performance measures detailing onboarding efficiency, workforce preparedness, and alumni vocation results are defined within the ISM and used to evaluate program education proficiency. Program organization, ISM structure, and spacecraft design is presented with an emphasis on quantifying student education as a result of program involvement

Abstract:
Abstract For utilization of free-standing ceramic parts produced by plasma spraying it is very important to know the temperature dependence of the linear thermal expansion coefficient and its relation to the porosity of the structure. Zircon ZrSiO4 and gray alumina (96 wt % AI2O3) were plasma sprayed by the water stabilized plasma gun WSP PAL 160. Samples of both materials were cut from thick coatings with respect to their orientation to the gun axis during the gun's horizontal spraying cycling with a constant speed. Thermal expansion coefficients and the differential thermal analysis were performed using SETARAM complex measuring system (up to 1750 °C), the density/porosity was measured by several techniques, such as Archimedean weighing, helium pycnometry, etc. It was found that both, the porosity and the thermal expansion coefficient, change for different locations in the thick deposit due to the varying trajectories of individual particles/droplets in the plasma stream. Measured data for deposits are then compared with data for bulk ceramics. The dependence of the thermal expansion coefficient on porosity in a given location was determined and its general applicability for free-standing plasma spraying is then discussed in the paper.

Abstract:
Many experimental studies have been conducted to explore the relations between control variables and process outputs in rotary ultrasonic machining (RUM). However, there are few reports on the comparison between RUM and conventional diamond drilling. In this paper, the cutting force and surface roughness are compared when machining alumina with RUM method and with conventional diamond drilling method. Furthermore, the effects of the control variables (rotational speed, feed rate, and ultrasonic power) on RUM outputs (such as cutting force and surface roughness) are studied. It is found that in comparison with conventional diamond drilling, the cutting force can be reduced significantly and the surface roughness can be improved by using RUM. It is also found that rotational speed, feed rate, and ultrasonic power have significant effects on RUM process.

Abstract:
This study deals with microstructural investigations of plasma sprayed yttria partially stabilized zirconia thermal barrier coatings, performed by classical and analytical transmission electron microscopy. The aim of the study was to determine eventual relationships between coating microstructure and toughness. The ceramic/metal interface which plays an important role during TBC thermomechanical sollicitation, has also been studied. In the 6 to 8 weight % Y2O3 range, the metastable tetragonal t’ phase is observed, showing special faulted microstructural features, such as grain twinning and antiphase boundary planes. Moreover, after high temperature annealing in air, a very fine and stable precipitation of the equilibrium cubic phase appears. It is believed that these microstructural elements could act as crack deviation sites and enhance coatings intrinsic toughness. Microstructural investigations of the alumina scales grown during high temperature annealing reveal yttrium segregation at oxide grain boundaries as well as significant quantities of zirconium inside the alumina grains. The oxide growth seems to be dominated by a classical grain boundary oxygen diffusion mechanism. The presence of zirconium inside the alumina grains suggests that Al2O3 also partially forms by chemical reduction of ZrO2 by Al.
