Abstract:
On the basis of neuropathological, neurochemical, genetic, and clinical profile studies on patients, distinct forms of dementia, such as dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), have been distinguished which were originally thought to be Alzheimer's disease (AD). Dementia with Lewy bodies is probably the second most common form of dementia in the elderly. In this thesis, a well characterised and investigated cohort of DLB and AD patients were compared to non-demented elderly controls in order to establish profiles of cognitive decline in these groups. The present study considered the notion that Neuropsychological subgroups exist within the diagnosis of Dementia of the Alzheimer's Type (DAT). Specifically, the scores on the Cognitive Examination (CAMCOG) of the Cambridge Index of Mental Disorders in the Elderly for 51 DAT patients and 79 normal adults were analyzed via cluster analysis in an attempt to derive meaningful groupings of patients. Results suggested that the CAMCOG was effective in separating normal from impaired individuals. Abstract:
Retrieval of autobiographical memories (AMs) is important for “sense of self”. Current theoretical understanding of AM retrieval predicts that working memory (WM) and executive functions (ExF) enable the hierarchical search for, and reliving of past, personal events in the mind’s eye. However, there remains a lack of consensus as to the nature of the relationships between these cognitive functions and semantic and episodic aspects of AM. The present study therefore aimed to explore the associations between these variables in a sample with a wide range of ability on measures of WM, ExF, and AM.

Background: There has been a rise in dementia awareness, with policy changes leading to increased diagnosis rates. However, the stigma of dementia is likely to cause challenges in diagnostic communication. This is complicated by the effect of dementia on cognitive functioning. The aims of this study were to (1) identify how diagnoses of dementia are communicated, (2) identify how people with dementia respond to the diagnosis, and (3) explore doctors’ perspectives on dementia diagnosis delivery. As a topic of study, little is known about the determinants of fear of Alzheimer's disease and how this fear may change as a function of aging, time, or experience. This is mainly due to a lack of understanding of the precise intracellular events that lead up to neuronal dysfunction in early and in late stages of the disease. Sulfatide (ST) is a glycosphingolipid that is essential for the proper structure and function of lipid rafts.
