The Law School of Caxias do Sul, now owned by the University of Caxias do Sul (UCS), began its operations in 1960 and worked as such until 1967 when UCS was founded. Research about the process of institutionalization and organization of the Law School in Caxias do Sul during the period from 1959 to 1967, relating it to the sociocultural context from Caxias and the academic culture produced in this college’s everyday life, was the aim of this study. The cultural history constituted theoretical framework, basing the analysis of documents from different sources that composed the empirical corpus of research, among them papers, correspondence, reports, regulations, protocols, photographs and an interview. The guiding principle for the dissertation was the institutionalization of the Law School and Academic Cultures experienced during the period mentioned above. Its maintainer was the Hospital Society Nossa Senhora de Fatima, by the founder Virvi Ramos. The context of higher education and its emergence in Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul and the city of Caxias do Sul are highlighted, giving a view of higher education expansion processes. Following this processes, the foundation of the Law School and the conditions mobilization for it to come true, was narrated. Finally, Academic Cultures, highlighting subject teachers and students, practices and rituals experienced in Law School are analyzed. In the process of institutionalization of the College, several social groups mobilized to its establishment and maintenance. The composition of a faculty coming mostly from the capital, the demand and attendance of students participating and involved in the study with the academic rituals compounded the daily life of the Law School of Caxias do Sul.

Full textThis Masters dissertation is a presentation of seventy-four 19th Century documents referring to the management of the Academia de Sciencias Juridicas in São Paulo, now the University of São Paulo School of Law (Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de São Paulo). Based on the edition of these documents, we discuss imperial interference in the Academy, from its foundation in 1827, until 1879. Imperial legislation from this period shows interference from the government, whose aim was to control the Law Course (Curso Jurídico). On one hand, this interference served to regulate various aspects of academic life, such as the appointment of professors, course content, preparatory courses and resolution of problems related to inadequacies in teaching, absence of tutors and student discipline, and on the other hand, it served to annul and substitute the Schools own bylaws whenever the government considered it necessary. The study of the historic aspects of the Schools foundation and of imperial interference shows that the function of the Academy was to preserve the structure of Monarchical Power, by producing graduates aligned with the dominant ideology of the time.

Full textThe present study seeks to contribute to the understanding of juridical and political ideas of Rio de Janeiros élites between 1899 and 1919, moment in the history of Brazil when the State was reorganized through the articulation of the republican institutions. The choice of analyzing articles published in The Free Law School of the city of Rio de Janeiros review was made based on the fact that the school was the first academic institution to offer a law course in Rio de Janeiro and, since its founding in 1891, its faculty was composed of prominent jurists as Augusto Olympio Viveiros de Castro, Francisco de Paula Lacerda de Almeida, Abelardo Saraiva da Cunha Lobo, Esmeraldino Olympio de Torres Bandeira, Carlos da Costa Ferreira Porto Carreiro, Benedicto Carneiro de Campos Valladares, among others. These circumstances made possible the observation of the social reasons that led to the expansion of the demand for legal education in Brazil, culminating in the end of São Paulo and Recifes law school exclusiveness. The legislation related to the creation of the new law schools determined the foundation of scientific journals focused on the dissemination of scientific literature and theoretical debates of the science of law. A quantitative survey of the published articles subjects organized by area allowed to observe the main debates and theoretical references who wrote (almost all teachers): the books \"Law as a Means to an End\" and \"The Spirit of Roman Law in Different Stages of its Development\", written by the german jurist Rudolf Von Ihering. Through this research may be observed that the brazilian jurists main ideas were assimilated from Ihering: the public law (represented by the authority and prominence of the State population) aims to defend private law (especially the life and private property); the of the knowledge of law and the creation of legal rules (laws) should not be restricted to the Philosophy of Law or Comparative Law, but should accept the society moral rules, so that people feel justice in the States action, essential contribution to the science of law for the formation of the State Nation. In general, it was stated that the jurists, part of Rio de Janeiros elites joined at the Free Law School of the city of Rio de Janeiro, understood that law not only represented the conflict zone between the individuals in a society, but it could offer proper solutions. Consequently, the social conflicts that occurred during the República Velha (1889-1930) should be a consequence of rules or laws badly designed. Therefore this way of thinking was based on the primacy of the State over individuals, so that these jurists imagined that legal reforms (and non-economic reforms) could lead to social peace.

Full textCurrent Law is studied as the exclusive fruit of human will. In this sense, the law is thought as a product of reason, apart of concepts such as Moral or Justice. This model corresponds to a certain political-social arrangement and is usually associated with a concept of State that regulates conflicts. This legal-political organization has not always existed. Brazil Empire had another way of conceiving Law and Society, in which Natural Law had a prominent place. In São Paulo, up to the Conciliation period, the discipline was in the hands of liberals and meant opposition to the monarchical government. In this period predominated the use of the compendium of Perreau, at first, and Ferrer, later. Both had roots in liberalism and were adopted by professors Avellar Brotero and Amaral Gurgel. During the mid-nineteenth century, spiritualistic tendencies flourished in the Law Academy. There they established the doctrines of Krause and the eclecticism of Jouffrouy and Cousin. In the last decades of the nineteenth century the discipline of Natural Law came to be in the hands of politically conservative professors, such as João Theodoro Xavier de Mattos, and convinced Catholics, such as José Maria C. de Sá and Benevides.

The study aimed at evaluating the food and nutrition safety of children aging from 05 to 10 years old, residing in the states of Pará and Amazonas, beneficiaries of the Bolsa Família Program (PBF), through food practices, comparing them with Brazilian children in the same age group, in the period from 2008 to 2014, in order to determine whether there was improvement or worsening in the quality of food consumption after the benefit’s advent. The PBF is a social program established by the Brazilian government to reduce vulnerability of low-income families through conditionality criteria, focusing on health and education with strategies for Food and Nutrition Safety and Human Right to Adequate Food. The study concluded that there is a negative association in dietary practices, since there was a decrease in the consumption of healthy food and a increasing tendency of consumption of low nutrient density food, favoring the incidence of Chronic Non-communicable Diseases (NCDs), obesity and overweight. The study further revealed benefits in consuming important protein sources such as beans, milk and its derivatives, with statistically significant results for nutritional status.
