Abstract:

Abstract:
The El Soplao amber outcrop (Rábago, Cantabria, Northern Spain), Early Cretaceous in age (about 110 Mya), has currently provided more than 500 arthropod inclusions. This PhD dissertation aimed to achieve in‐depth knowledge of the paleobiology associated with the arthropods from the El Soplao amber outcrop, allowing for a preliminary comparison with primary Cretaceous amber outcrops. This was possible only after a thorough systematic treatment of El Soplao arthropod inclusions that inferred their paleoautoecological, paleobiogeographical and paleoethological contexts to, ultimately, glean a holistic understanding of the paleoenvironmental setting. The resin‐producing plants responsible for El Soplao amber are conifers belonging to the extinct family Cheirolepidiaceae and, at least, another unknown conifer group. These trees would have lived close to the paleo‐coastline. Paleofires played a leading role in the production and accumulation of resin. The areas where the resin was buried and fossilized correspond to marshy or delta‐estuarine environments. Some resin pieces had a long exposure time to marine or brackish waters before being buried. Identified arthropod diversity is high, and the outcrop has provided the oldest known records for certain taxa. Thirteen hexapod orders (composed by about 40 families), four arachnid orders, and one crustacean order have been determined. The arthropod fauna from El Soplao is quantitatively and qualitatively singular when compared to faunas from other known Cretaceous ambers. Three insect species occur in both the El Soplao and Peñacerrada I (=Moraza) outcrops. The shared species between these two Basque‐Cantabrian Basin outcrops suggest they are similar in age. Moreover, similarities have been noted between the paleofauna from the Spanish amber outcrops (El Soplao and Peñacerrada I) (Albian) and the paleofauna from Lebanon (Barremian‐Aptian), despite these outcrops are separated in time by several million years. El Soplao amber is valuable in the abundance of syninclusions and samples that provide information about paleoethology and paleobiotic interactions. There are instances of possible swarming, mating, camouflage/defense, plant‐insect relationship, parasitism, possible hematophagy and possible predator‐prey relationship. An expanded English summary is provided at the end of the dissertation.

Abstract:

The Amber of the Moment is a thirteen-minute composition for orchestra. Inspiration for this piece is drawn from two sources: the novel Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut Jr., and my desire to utilize techniques derived from various musical cultures, including Balinese gamelan and African drumming and marimba playing. Although not directly narrative, much of the imagery portrayed in Slaughterhouse Five informed the emotional landscape of the piece. As to the use of techniques from other cultures, my aim is not to merely imitate them, but to utilize them in a manner appropriate to the tradition of orchestral concert music.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Long baseline optical/infrared interferometry allows the astronomers to probe the Universe with a milliarcseconds resolution. The construction of new interferometric beam combiners presented the necessity to develop the appropriate data processing methodology allowing to take the maximum advantage of ail their capacities. Among the fitst generation beam combiners of the VL TI (Very Large Telescope Interferometer), AMBER (Astronomical MultiBEam Recombiner) instrument operates in the near infrared and is able to combine the beams of two or three telescopes simultaneously. This work is entirely devoted to the validation and the improvement of the AMBER data processing algorithms, focusing on absolute interferometric observables. We start our discussion with a brief overview of the foundations of the stellar interferometry. Likewise, we present the AMBER instrument, and we introduce in detail the standard data processing. Then, we develop an independent data processing software which allow us, in one hand, to test and validate the standard processing approach, and in the other hand, to develop the improved data processing algorithms. We provide an improved data processing algorithm to reduce AMBER data, and we developed a robust algorithm to estimate the atmospheric piston. Finally, we apply these improved approaches to the observations of the star Betelgeuse. The confinnation of the diameter of the star demonstrates, from a completely independent way, the stabilitv of AMBER on the skv and its abilitv to Droduce reliable absolute visibilities

Abstract:
The existence of neutrino oscillations demands that neutrinos have non-zero rest mass, the evidence for and implications of which are discussed. Nuclear B-decay is offered as a model-independent tool for direct neutrino mass measurement and contemporary experimental measurements are reviewed. The AMBER experiment is introduced as a novel charge spectrometer, aimed at precision electron energy measurements to probe the structure of the B-spectrum close to its endpoint. AMBER employs a vacuum insulated inverse Kelvin probe to continuously monitor a single rate-of-change observable. A detailed technical description of the technique is provided, followed by proof of principle demonstrations and an examination of hardware performance and its capability to provide sub-eV electron energy resolution. a first order B-spectrum reconstruction algorithm is described and applied to data from a Monte Carlo simulation of a highly idealised AMBER-like model experiment, in which important source scattering effects are neglected, and a calculation of the sensitivity to the neutrino mass is made. Finally the successes and shortcomings of the AMBER technique are discussed.

Abstract:
The aim of this project was to achieve a deep understanding of the mechanisms by which Baltic amber degrades, in order to develop techniques for preventive conservation of archaeological amber objects belonging to the National Museum of Denmark’s collections. To examine deterioration of Baltic amber, a starting point was to identify and monitor surface and bulk properties which are affected during degradation. The way to operate consisted of the use of accelerated ageing to initiate degradation of raw Baltic amber samples in different conditions of relative humidity, oxygen exposure or pH and, successively, of the use of non/micro-destructive techniques to identify and quantify changes in visual, chemical and structural properties. A large piece of raw Baltic amber was used to prepare several test samples for two different kinds of accelerated ageing: thermal-ageing and photo-ageing. During the ageing, amber samples were regularly examined through several analytical techniques related to different information: appearance/colour change by visual examination, photography and colorimetry; chemical change by infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and elemental analysis; rate of oxidation by oxygen measurement; qualitative analysis of released volatiles by gas chromatography – mass spectrometry. The obtained results were analysed through both critical evaluation and statistical study. After the interpretation of the achieved data, the main relations between amber and environmental factors during the degradation process became clearer and it was possible to identify the major pathways by which amber degrades, such as hydrolysis of esters into alcohols and carboxylic acids, thermal-oxidation and photo-oxidation of terpenoid components, depolymerisation and decomposition of the chemical structure. At the end it was possible to suggest a preventive conservation strategy based on the control of climatic, atmospheric and lighting parameters in the environment where Baltic amber objects are stored and displayed.

Abstract:
For the greater part, security controls are based on the principle of Decision through Detection (DtD). The exception to this is a honeypot, which analyses interactions between a third party and itself, while occupying a piece of unused information space. As honeypots are not located on productive information resources, any interaction with it can be assumed to be non-productive. This allows the honeypot to make decisions based simply on the presence of data, rather than on the behaviour of the data. But due to limited resources in human capital, honeypots’ uptake in the South African market has been underwhelming. Amber attempts to change this by offering a zero-interaction security system, which will use the honeypot approach of decision through Presence (DtP) to generate a blacklist of third parties, which can be passed on to a network enforcer. Empirical testing has proved the usefulness of this alternative and low cost approach in defending networks. The functionality of the system was also extended by installing nodes in different geographical locations, and streaming their detections into the central Amber hive.

Abstract:
The performance increase of state of the art processors has stagnated dueto power and thermal constraints. Heterogeneous computing has latelyattracted interest and may be the key for improving the performanceand energy-efficiency of computing systems under their tight physicalbudgets. The Single-ISA Heterogeneous MAny-core Computer (SHMAC)project is a research project that seeks to explore the challenges ofheterogeneous computing. Therefore, the SHMAC project requires adiversity of processor cores of different size and performance, to exploreheterogeneous architectures.Currently, there is only one processor core, Amber, available for SHMAC.This thesis presents the development of Turbo Amber (TA), a high-performance processor core for SHMAC. We present an overview of high-performance processor architecture techniques and extend the existingAmber core with a branch predictor, a return address stack, an instructionqueue and a fast multiplier. The front-end of TA is capable of fetchingand performing branch prediction on up to four instructions each clockcycle and can be extended with an appropriate back-end for superscalarexecution. Our results show that TA has a performance increase of 49% over theoriginal Amber core, with a moderate increase in FPGA resource utiliza-tion: slice utilization from 4.7% to 7.9%, block RAM utilization from1.0% to 3.3%, and no DSP slices used on a Xilinx Virtex-5 FPGA. TAhas also been integrated into the existing SHMAC-infrastructure andverified by running applications on top of Linux and freeRTOS.

Abstract:
Be to, vis daugiau fosilinių sakų aptinkama Azijoje, Afrikoje, Pietų Amerikoje.
Amber is a fossilized form of terpenoid resins. Unlike other fossil, amber is completely organic in nature, and its chemical composition remains almost constant over millions of years. Chemical characteristics of amber are a consequence of both biological origins and geological enviroment. Have been proposed different characterization techniques such as IR spectroscopy, NMR and other. By these methods chemical structure can be derived. However, these techniques do not allow totally exclusive distinction, because spectral differences cannot be universally established for all the samples. The main aim of this work was to characterize some samples of fossil resins from different countries. Six fossil resins were campared: ,,contemporary” Baltic transparent amber (Lithuania), archeological amber from Benaičiai and Turlojiškės (Lithuania), archeological amber from Japan, fossil resin from Central Lebanon and fossil resin from North Paris. These fossil resin were analyzed using IR spectroscopy method. IR spectra of fossil resin showed a presence of these groups: O─H (in polymers), ─CH3 and ─CH2─, ―Si─O─Si― or ―Si─O─C―. Come to a conclusion, the chemical structure and features of all analyzed fossil resin are similar. But they have the differences too. Fossil resins from Lithuania (Baltic transparent amber and archeological amber from Benaičiai and Turlojiškės) spectra have an absorption band at wavelength 1250-1175 cm-1, which is called ,,Baltic shoulder” by Beck. Abstract:
The web is the greatest information source in human history, yet finding all offers for flats with gardens in London, Paris, and Berlin or all restaurants open after a screening of the latest blockbuster remain hard tasks – as that data is not easily amenable to processing. Extracting web data into databases for easier processing has been a resource-intensive process, requiring human supervision for every source from which to extract. This has been changing with approaches that replace human annotators with automated annotations. Such approaches could be successfully applied to restricted settings such as single attribute extraction or for domains with significant redundancy among sources. Multi-attribute objects are often presented on (i) Result pages, where multiple objects are presented on a single page as lists, tables or grids, with most important attributes and a summary description, (ii) Detail pages, where each page provides a detailed list of attributes and long description for a single entity, often in rich format. Both result and detail pages are having their own advantages. Extracting objects from result pages is orders of magnitude faster than from detail pages, and the links to detail pages are often only accessible through result pages. Detail pages have a complete list of attributes and full description of the entity. Early web data extraction approaches requires manual annotations for each web site to reach high accuracy, while a number of domain independent approaches only focus on unsupervised repeated structure segmentation. The former is limited in scaling and automation, while the latter is lacked in accuracy. Recent automated data extraction systems are often informed with an ontology and a set of object and attribute recognizers, however they have focused on extracting simple objects with few attributes from single-entity pages and avoided result pages. We present an automatic ontology-based multi-attribute object extraction system AMBER, which deals with both result and detail pages, achieves very high accuracy (>96%) with zero site-specific supervision, and is able to solve practical issues that arise in real-life data extraction tasks. AMBER is also applied as an important component of DIADEM, the first automatic full-site extraction system that is able to extract structured data from different domains without site-specific supervision, and has been tested through a large-scale evaluation (>10, 000) sites. On the result page side, AMBER achieves high accuracy through a novel domain- aware, path-based template discovery algorithm, and integrates annotations for all parts of the extraction, from identifying the primary list of objects, over segment- ing the individual objects, to aligning the attributes. Yet, AMBER is able to tolerate significant noise in the annotations, by combining these annotations with a novel algorithm for finding regular structures based on XPATH expressions that capture regular tree structures. On the detail page side, AMBER integrates boilerplate removal, dynamic lists identification and page dissimilarity calculation seamlessly to identify data region, then employs a set of fairly simple and cheaply computable features for attribute extraction. Besides, AMBER is the first approach that combines result page extraction and detail page extraction by integrating attributes extracted from result pages and the attributes found on corresponding detail pages. AMBER is able to identify attributes of objects with near perfect accuracy and to extract dozens of attributes with > 96% across several domains, even in presence of significant noise. It outperforms uninformed, automated approaches by a wide margin if given an ontology. Even in absence of an ontology, AMBER outperforms most previous systems on record segmentation.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The general framework of this PhD is a theoretical study by quantum chemistry and molecular dynamics of the relationship between the structure and the fluorescence properties of fluorescent proteins, particulary, of the yellow fluorescent protein (YFP). In this protein, the electron transition energy is reduced with respect to that of the green fluorescent protein (GFP) as a result of a π stacking between the chromophore (the part that absorbs and emits visible light in the protein) and a tyrosine . This effect is the basis of the usefulness of YFP in the laboratory (resonance energy transfer "FRET" with other proteins). This study has two parts. First, we have tried to determine if a classical force field (ff99 of the AMBER suite) can represent the effect of π stacking on the dynamics in the excited state. For this goal, we performed a series of CASPT2 calculations on a grid of points. The conclusion is that the difference between the interaction energy surfaces resulting from the force field and the CASPT2 calculations does not seem decisive for the fluorescence properties. Second, we used a model developed in the ThéoSim group to extract the fluorescence decay time from a series of dynamics (300ns) using a classical force field. This method leads to the determination of parameters in principle transferable across fluorescent protein. We compared GFP and YFP. This approach opens the way to a fast method for determining fluorescence properties for new fluorescent proteins. A next step would be to improve the description of radiative decay used in this model

Lawson, Sarah, and Stacy Brown. "Stability of Oral Vitamin K Solutions Stored in Amber Plastic Syringes." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2018. https://dc.etsu.edu/asrf/2018/schedule/102.

Full text
Abstract:
Oral vitamin K is administered to patients who have very high INR lab values and are on warfarin therapy. Due to the inability of some patients to swallow tablets, and the commercial formulation of vitamin K being available only as a tablet or an injectable emulsion, it may be necessary to compound an oral liquid formulation. When compounding batches of oral solutions, it is sometimes convenient to measure the product in unit doses. In this project, we compared liquid vitamin K in sterile water (1mg/mL) verses liquid vitamin K in Ora-Sweet (1mg/mL) stored in amber plastic syringes. Vitamin K is light sensitive and is best stored in amber containers. Vitamin K is also lipophilic and may adsorb to the plastic syringes. In this study, we investigated the feasibility of bulk compounding oral vitamin K solutions, and aliquoting them for storage in amber plastic syringes. The Vitamin K in sterile water syringes were made by mixing 45 mL of sterile water and 5 ampules, each containing 10mg/mL of vitamin K emulsion, together in an amber glass bottle for a final concentration of 1mg/mL. Thirty 1mL plastic amber syringes were filled with the mixture, capped, and placed in the refrigerator. The same process was repeated using Ora-Sweet instead of sterile water to fill thirty more plastic amber syringes. Three syringes of vitamin K in sterile water mixture, three syringes of vitamin K in Ora-Sweet mixture, and one Vitamin K reference standard were all analyzed using HPLC-UV on the day of compounding, and at day 1, 2, 4, 7, 14, 21, 30, 60, and 90. If stability is defined as 90-110% active ingredient, then Vitamin K in sterile water is stable to fourteen days, 95.3±3.5% recovery, but some samples fell below 90% recovery after 14 days. By day ninety, the recovery in SWFI syringes was 84.2±8.9%. For vitamin K in Ora-Sweet, the within-day variability was very high due to limitations in drug dissolution; as such the average concentration was not consistently above 90%. On the day of compounding, the percent recovery in the Ora-Sweet syringes was 92.7±9.9%, despite 1 hour of stirring. In conclusion, the Vitamin K in sterile water mixture can be stored in refrigerated, amber oral plastic syringes for 14 days, but plastic amber syringes were not appropriate for storage of the Vitamin K in Ora-Sweet mixture.

Full text
Abstract:
The amber spacers from Bronze Age Britain and Europe are one of the most well known artefact groups from this time period. Yet despite the frequency with which these artefacts are cited, the details of these finds both individually and within their original excavation contexts appear to be poorly understood. Recent new finds of ‘sets’ of spacers prompted this review and updating of the amber spacer corpus, which now extends to 375 individual spacers from 141 findspots. Once thought to constitute an artefact horizon which could provide a chronological bridge between the regions of Northwest Europe and Britain / the Central European Únĕtice/Tumulus Cultures and Late Helladic I and II Mycenaean Greece, new radiocarbon dating programs have extended their date range from (potentially) c. 2000 cal B.C. to c.1360 cal. B.C., although the regional chronologies remain essentially unresolved. To give a clear survey of how the spacers have been viewed historically, the catalogue entry for each findspot/spacer includes, as well as information about the findspots themselves, x-rays, photographs and drawings produced for this research, alongside all the previously published quotes and illustrations. Microscopic analyses provide evidence for some spacer-sets having been fragmented and deposited separately. Maps showing illustrations of the spacers where they were recovered allow comparison of regional similarities and differences. Loose colour plates show the x-rays of groups of spacers which have been correlated in past interpretations at 1:1 scale for easy comparison. Some earlier interpretations, including the Crescentic/Pendant regional division, the jet spacer/amber spacer/lunulae discrete distribution pattern and the close relationship of the Basic Pattern spacers, are challenged and found to no longer be sustainable. The craft and production aspects of spacer manufacture, particularly the procurement of suitable raw material, are addressed and a new narrative is presented, which is partly informed by the experimental replica research.

Abstract:
Internal charging is the accumulation of charged particles inside a material. Thisbuild up represents a serious hazard to satellites and instruments exposed to thespace environment. The Van Allen radiation belts constitute one of the worst spaceenvironments for satellites orbiting the earth. The energy of the electrons is higherthan in any earth orbit. Previous studies have noted the risk of internal charging in alow earth orbit or in geostationary orbit. The internal charging analysis of the AMBER instrument has been performed in amedium earth orbit. To run a relevant internal charging study, a whole dedicatedmodelling chain has been conducted. The instrument has been modelled with thecomputer-aided design software EDGE. The radiation transport analysis has beenperformed with the ESA/GRAS Monte Carlo-based software. The proper internalcharging analysis has been performed with the SPIS-IC software.Depending on various factors such as materials and shielding, the AMBER instrumentpresents few risks of electrostatic discharge. A wrong use of material can represent ahuge hazard in terms of internal charging. A thick shielding can lead to a higher riskof accumulation of charges due to a lower radiation induced conductivity.

Abstract:
A DMA Controller can offload a processor tremendously. A memory copy operation can be initiated by the processor and while the processor executes others tasks the memory copy can be fulfilled by the DMA Controller. An implementation of a DMA Controller for use in LEON3 SoC:s has been made during this master thesis. Problems that occurred while designing a controller of this type concerned AMBA buses, data transfers, alignment and interrupt handling. The DMA Controller supports AMBA and is attached to an AHB master and APB slave. The DMA Controller supports burst transfers to maximize data bandwidth. The source and destination address can be arbitrarily aligned. It supports multiple channels and it has interrupt generation on transfer completion along with interrupt masking. The implemented functionality works as intended.
