Abstract:
This research focuses on the development process of the young technology-based firm (YTBF). It aims to understand the key actions that facilitate the transition from invention to innovation and to determine if ambidexterity (i.e., the balance between exploration and exploitation) is associated with greater performance. To begin with, we establish the definitions of the young technology-based firm, innovation, exploration, exploitation and ambidexterity which are used in this research. A first empirical study, based on group concept mapping, identifies three actions that are particularly important and feasible for moving from prototyping to commercialization: listening to team members; communicate about the product by highlighting the features that will please the customer; understand what market needs the product will fill. Anticipating the financing of growth from the inception of the company is identified as particularly important but difficult to achieve. A second empirical study focuses on ambidexterity. We use literature to determine the key variables necessary for the conceptual modeling of ambidexterity: ambidexterity is potentially influenced by a set of organizational and contextual variables (composition of the entrepreneurial team, features of the economic and institutional environment, financial resources); ambidexterity is likely to influence performance; performance may depend directly on some antecedents of ambidexterity. These hypotheses are tested. We use 94 answers obtained from a questionnaire sent to 350 JET. The results are as follows: (i) cohesion and to a lesser extent the complementarity of the entrepreneurial team, the dynamism of the environment and the quality of the technological business incubators are the main antecedents of ambidexterity; (ii) ambidexterity is positively associated with economic performance and (iii) financial resources have no impact on ambidexterity

Abstract:
The objective of this dissertation is to provide new theoretical and empirical insights into the relationship between internationalization and performance. We revisit this relationship in light of two theoretical streams: the transaction cost and internalization theories on the one hand and the organizational learning theory on the other. More specifically, we undertake the following research interests: 1. -Studying how time-based variables of the process, such as age, speed, and rhythm of internationalization, influence performance. 2. -Examining the effects of cultural diversity in the portfolio of countries. 3. -Reconsidering the contributions of the more established internationalization theories, namely the Uppsala and New Ventures theories. 4. -Coining the concept of international ambidexterity. Our dissertation integrates the temporal and cultural attributes of internationalization in a unique model and examines the internationalization of firms from a dynamic perspective. Success is based on a moderate internationalization speed, the regularity of the expansion, and a minimization of cultural heterogeneity between countries in the portfolio of firms. Our research also highlights the existence of different and often more efficient internationalization processes than those described by well-established theories in the international literature. This calls for updating our research objectives concerning these processes. In particular, new theoretical developments suggest rethinking the internationalization process as a combination of exploitation and exploration activities calling for a reformulation of the concept of ambidexterity in an international context. This new orientation promises new research prospects on the concept of international ambidexterity as the ultimate source of international competitive advantage. The worldwide mass grocery retailing industry from 1998 to 2004 is the empirical setting of this study. Our database includes information for 386 worldwide retailers and 87 internationalized retailers with more than 420 foreign entities in 128 countries

Abstract:
The research that we carry out examines the organization of incremental and radical innovations, both intra- and inter-enterprise, in the light of organizational ambidextry works (Tushman and O’Reilly, 1996, 1999; O’Reilly and Tushman, 2004; Birkinshaw and Gibson, 2004).Taking the case of logistics service provision, an industry concerned by the extensive innovation dilemma (Le Masson, Weil and Hatchuel, 2006), our research aims to study the organizational modalities implemented to innovate, but also to identify and understand the explanatory factors of the recourse to organizational ambidextry forms. Moreover, to our knowledge, no study has been performed on organizational ambidextry in the service industry. It is therefore, also about the identification of the specificities bound to the organization of innovation on service companies. To successfully achieve our research, case studies were performed with 8 Logistics Service Providers (LSP) companies. 49 interviews were carried out with the actors participating in the innovation process in each company. Secondary data (internal documentation, professional press, etc.) was also collected. The results enlighten the organizational modalities implemented to innovate in service companies and within interconnected companies for both researchers and practitioners. Our study also identifies the explanatory factors of the recourse to, and the combination of, organizational ambidextry forms. These factors are bound to the company’s characteristics as well as the characteristics of the innovation, but also to the inter-organizational relationship between the provider and its costumer

Abstract:
This research contributes to identify the main determiners of the ambidextrous in the context of the SME (SMALL AND MEDIUM-SIZED ENTERPRISE); to propose an abstract model which shows current knowledge on this object of study and to allow a better understanding of the organizational and management factors(mailmen) favoring the combination(overall) of the innovations of exploitation(operation) and exploration within SME(small and medium-sized enterprise). It will thus be question of the concept of organizational ambidextrous and its content to share(unit) within the framework of SME(SMALL AND MEDIUM-SIZED ENTERPRISE), of the central role of the ambidextrous entrepreneur as source(spring) and facilitator of the ambidextrous, the impact of the specificity of this type of structure on the forms(shapes) of ambidextrous adopted as well as the importance of the external network to assure(insure) the simultaneous pursuit(continuation) of the innovations of exploitation(operation) and of exploration. The contribution of this search(research) is to allow, through the innovative in-depth study of seven cases of SME(SMALL AND MEDIUM-SIZED ENTERPRISE) in Brittany, to integrate(join) the specificities of the SME(SMALL AND MEDIUM-SIZED ENTERPRISE) into the conciliation of the double requirement of innovation and to show that this organizational ambidextrous is possible for an innovative SME(SMALL AND MEDIUM-SIZED ENTERPRISE) in spite of the constraint of resources specific to these organizations

Abstract:
The main objective in management of any organization is a successful and sustainable performance. To survive over time, a company should combine two competing activities. On the one hand, it must exploit existing certainties to be effective in the short term, and on the other hand, being capable at the same time to explore new opportunities to be innovative in the future. Ambidextrous organizations have the ability to pursue these activities simultaneously and produce radical and incremental innovation. In our research, we show that to achieve ambidexterity separation of activities is important, but not sufficient. Without integration between business structures and processes, the exploratory activity of the innovation unit is more likely to shrink and disappear with time as unprofitable function. To survive and sustain in the long term, a company should adapt fractal and dynamic ambidexterity. This new concept provides us with a solution to the question of balance and determines the organizational ability to define and set the appropriate proportions of exploration and exploitation simultaneously at multiple organizational levels and re-configure them when it is necessary to meet the change

Abstract:
Our research work deals with the subjects of innovation and ambidexterity in the management. Our goal is to conduct a comparative study of managerial practices with several U.S. SMEs in order to identify the determinants of the balance between new and common or traditional practices. Throughout the research period we keep following our two main purposes. On the one hand, our research work focuses on the case of U.S. companies specifically proactive with regard to innovation and change management. This allows us to widen our knowledge concerning certain forms of management in the United States. On the other hand, we will draw on large number of studies dealing with both innovation management in general and particularly qualitative factors in the in the conceptions and practices of ambidexterity, especially in relation to “leadership” styles.Concerning the methodological choices, we keep up with abductive approach, because there is back and forth between literature and research field. Indeed, our research is based on a qualitative approach with case studies (Yin, Glaser et Strauss, Eisenhardt...), while our research question and problem have been refined according to the obtained results. This research work helps us to better understand business operation and management of U.S. companies, especially when they are family-owned and to highlight the specificities of their methods in terms of innovation management and ambidexterity. It helps to put the concept of innovation in perspective to show the potential contributions of certain measured approaches, aiming both the exploitation of existing and the exploration of new ways. In addition, our results provide managerial recommendations for U.S. companies, but also for other organizations or managers related to the U.S. context

Gomez, Yannick. Thesis, Lyon, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017LYSE3037.

Full text
Abstract:
The American James MOORE was the first to discuss the concept of business ecosystem in an article from 1993 and in a book published in 1996. Several theoretical questions seemingly need to be completed:- The place and role of a leading firm within a business ecosystem - The question of the life cycle of a business - The emergence of the term "ecosystem of innovation" and its positioning in relation to the concept of business ecosystem. In order to study those different research questions, we have observed for a long time the evolution of the nuclear platform of Marcoule. In 2013, the CEA Marcoule launched the Industrial Sites Valorisation Pole initiative, which aims to promote the upgrading of the ecosystem. The objective of the leading firm is therefore to transform its business ecosystem into an ecosystem of innovation. In the first part of the case study, we studied the motivations of the leading firm for transforming its business ecosystem into an innovation ecosystem.Nuclear dismantling leads to seven major paradoxes (human, contractual, waste, safety, financial, territorial, technological). The case of Marcoule demonstrates that if the paradoxes are major, the company may not find, internally, by its own forces, the means to respond. Some paradoxes impose innovations of exploration on the conceptual, managerial and technological levels. The second part of the case study was devoted to the study of the role of the CEA Marcoule, leader of the territorial business ecosystem in order to transform it. Then we observed and described three concrete enrolment actions of the actors,- The translation on the market of the ecosystem upgrading- The creation of a frontier object around ecosystem labelling- The opening of the innovation This phase of observation of the enrolment actions initiated by the leader of the ecosystem took place during the period from 2013 to mid 2017. We were able to observe the promising start of the PVIS initiative and the successful enrolment of the actors around the first projects that were launched. The observation of the Marcoule research field through the prism of our conceptual framework, the sociology of translation, makes it possible to highlight two important results.First, the study of the Marcoule case allows us to complete the theoretical approach on the life cycle of a business ecosystem, in particular on the notion of intentionality. Phase changes - from birth to expansion, from expansion to authority and from authority to decline - do not result from the foreseeable actions of actors determined by biology, but are the result of the strategic intentions of intelligent actors who continually calculate the gains and losses they can derive from their participation in the business ecosystem. We suggest replacing the traditional life cycle of a business ecosystem proposed by James MOORE (Birth  Expansion  Authority  Renewal  Decline and Death) by the following sequence (Birth  Expansion  Transformation in ecosystem of innovation  Decline and Death).Secondly, the observation of the Marcoule case and the leading firm of its territorial business ecosystem completes the academic work that exists on the articulation of different forms of ambidexterity. The CEA/Marcoule case shows us that all the implemented ambidextrous actions were legitimised by highlighting the problems needing to be solved, linked to the paradoxes of nuclear dismantling. purchasing needs to achieve a competition respecting all the rules of the public procurement

Abstract:
It is now common knowledge to develop an ambidextrous organization in a firm to guarantee a competitive advantage in its environment. Such perspective is rooted in James March’s model (1991) whose purpose is to sustain organizational learning through adaptive mechanisms between agents. This model anchored in the tradition of problem-solving offers a behavioural approach coping with biases and heuristics of bounded rationality. In contrast, with literature models studying the balance between exploration and exploitation activities (ambidexterity), we demonstrate how exploration can be more generative if it uses exploitation constraints as prior knowledge to generate concepts. These rely on positively conditioning them by decision-making parameters contributing to exploitation. New decision situations are designed instead of traditionally selecting explorations. This model - decisional ambidexterity-allows building up projects capable of exploring conditions overcoming limitations and performances of exploitation. A collaborative research conducted at Zodiac Aerospace allowed revealing such new model. It extends organizational ambidexterity into the unknown, more adapted to innovation management & governance, whilst precising how to drive organization metabolisms inducing change among participating organizations in a conglomerate of SMEs

Alliances have to deal with the dynamic of exploration and exploitation to innovate, which conducts to the ambidexterity concept. Abstract:
This thesis aims to better understand and support corporate innovation strategies to help them coping with the challenges associated with the intensification of the dynamics and changes in the economic environment. However, in order to survive these economic rhythms, previous research recommends organizations to reconcile their exploitation and their exploration activities, concomitantly. In this context, our work specifically examines an innovation strategy giving particular attention to the initiatives of individuals in exploration activities : contextual ambidexterity. Simultaneously, our research examines an object of research previously unreleased in academic studies : the corporate Fab Lab (or internal Fab Lab). At the crossroads of these two subjects, this thesis raises the question of the development of contextual ambidexterity through a corporate Fab Lab. Our case study is conducted in Renault Group, one of the first structures to develop this practice of corporate Fab Lab. Our analysis permits to define this management tool as a quasi-structure conducive to the development of contextual ambidexterity. It then presents the guidance to lead in the objective of developing contextual ambidexterity through a corporate Fab Lab

Abstract:
Using data from the biopharmaceutical industry, this study analyzes the relationship between internal and external exploration (exploitation) and the moderating role of firm characteristics. We argue that the characteristics of a firm - in particular a firm's vertical scope - are an important but so far overlooked contingency factor determining the relationship between internal and external exploration (exploitation). Our findings indicate that differences in vertical scope result in alternative combinations of internal and external exploration. While specialized firms tend to focus either on exploration or exploitation both within the firm as well as with their alliance portfolio, vertically integrated firms prefer to balance exploration and exploitation across firm boundaries. Abstract:
Our case study based on an exploratory entity evolving from a small team to a business unit raise questions related to the identification and structuration of an innovation field. The literature gives few elements with regards to the choice of such a field, and the mechanisms to set priorities within a chosen field. Our results related to innovation processes show that exploratory activities leads to a renewal of exploitation, and also that the difficulties encountered by NCA in exploration activities are less related to the existing processes than to the choice of an innovation field. Our results related to organization show that NCA works in a mode of simultaneous ambidexterity, being able at the same time to launch new product categories and to explore new product categories. This also leads to the renewal of existing routines. The structure of NCA has also some original features, being at the same time a business unit and an exploratory entity. This exploratory business unit seems to be able to launch more easily new products categories, because there is no need to look for a landing zone, as it is the case of organisations solely responsible for exploration

Abstract:
Innovation and management control are both considered as determinants of business performance. Yet, these two concepts appear at first sight contradictory, and some researchers have presented them as difficult to reconcile, advocating innovative organizations to have recourse to other modes of control. The issue of the role and influence of management control in innovative context arises and motivates this doctoral work.Beyond the literature concerned with the influence of management control on innovation, we use the theoretical and conceptual frameworks bearing on managerial innovation and organizational ambidexterity in order to deal with this issue of the link between management control and product innovation. The methodology is exploratory, qualitative and adductive corresponding thus to an interpretativist epistemological positioning. It consists of a two-stage approach : an exploratory study with nineteen start-ups and SMEs innovative and two case studies of SME which are both recently entered into an innovation strategy. The results of this research show that innovation and management control are far from being antagonistic. First, management control whether interactive or cybernetic type appears as favorable to innovation, but innovation also appears to impact the management control systems, pushing companies to develop tools of control on the one hand, tools which are reshaped and adapted on the other hand. Finally, we observe that product innovation and managerial innovation support each other, but also that management control appears as contextual ambidexterity support. Moreover, this study highlights the key role of the leader as hybrid or ambidextrous actor

Abstract:
Competition and technological change have never been as intense as they are today. To survive, companies must increasingly carry out current activities at the same time that they explore future ones. It is no easy task to operate on both of these fronts, and doing so is a potential source of tension and contradiction. Although management research has provided insight into the exploration and exploitation tension, there are still contradictions and unexplored areas. In particular, there is no consensus on the definition of the concepts of exploration and exploitation, which means the research lacks a certain level of consistency. In addition, there has been very little attention paid to the Exploration/Exploitation tension in the context of young, growing “scale-up” companies, which are particularly exposed to threats to their survival. To obtain a better understanding of the situations this tension causes in these companies, we have adopted a multi-paper dissertation consisting of three complementary studies. In the first study, to create a conceptual framework for the thesis, we answer researchers’ call for a clarification of the concepts of exploration and exploitation by proposing a typology of exploration. Then, based on a longitudinal, multi-case approach focused on eight scale-up companies, we first explore, in a second study, the factors influencing firms’ strategic orientations vis-à-vis exploration and exploitation activities. Finally, in the third study, we seek to understand how management teams define their individual roles with respect to exploration and exploitation activities

Abstract:
While expansion outside the domestic market is considered an important growth opportunity for SMEs, it remains a complex and expensive process, riddled with uncertainties that can constitute a real threat to the companies’ stability and longevity. As such, this thesis aims to understand how managers of SMEs control the development of their organizations in the international scene, as well as the systems they employ for this purpose. The methodology used is a mix between a quantitative analysis of 110 international SMEs and a qualitative study of 11 specific cases. This combination has allowed for a study of both the nature and role that management control systems play in the international development of SMEs.This thesis has found that managers of SMEs control their organizations’ development by combining actions, results, and clan control mechanisms. The management control systems therefore rely on a “control mix” of mechanisms of different natures ranging from more or less sophisticated, depending on the degree of dispersion of the SME’s international activities. This thesis also observes that management control systems are employed not only to monitor international development, but also for other roles, including to control internationalization strategies, set the limits, communicate managers’ beliefs, legitimize decisions regarding internationalization, as well as stimulate organizational learning regarding internationalization. From this, it appears that management control systems allow managers to combine exploration and exploitation strategies in foreign markets.Consequently, this thesis proposes a model in which management control systems serve as levers of international ambidexterity. This model allows for new perspectives on the debate surrounding the internationalization process and management control systems

Abstract:
SMEs are faced with significant barriers in their attempt to expand internationally, particularly due to their limited resources. Interorganisational collaboration offers the possibility to share ressources to increase the degree of internationalisation. This study focuses on flexible relationships, which can be informal and short-term, that companies can maintain between each other to support their internationalisation. The aim is to have a better understanding of the different forms that collaboration can take, and to evaluate their impact on the degree of internationalisation of French SMEs (export intensity, scope in terms of regions and countries, and speed of internationalisation). The network theory, the resource-based view, and the concept of ambidexterity are used as the theoretical framework. The literature review shows a wide range of potential practices. The survey based on a sample of 181 French exporting firms includes eight types of collaborative practices, either exploratory or exploitative. The analysis of the data, primarily based on the multiple regression method, highlights the positive effect of collaboration on internationalisation, particularly for the number of markets served and speed. Exploratory practices have a more positive effect than exploitative ones. The industry to which the firm belongs is important as well. We contribute to a better grasp and definition of the concept of interfirm collaborative practices for internationalisation, in the context of French SMEs

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of the study is to increase the understanding of how exploration and exploitation should be managed at different organizational levels in the construction industry. The study identifies success factors and important conditions in the project-based construction industry and provides a framework for how construction companies can take the first steps towards organizational ambidexterity. Method – A qualitative case study with an inductive approach and with a descriptive purpose. The data collection has been carried out through semi-structured interviews and the analysis has been done based on a thematic analysis. Results – Five themes have been identified from the study; Leadership & Culture, Structure & Governance, People & Understanding, Methods and Cooperation. All themes have subordinate success factors that explicitly describe how exploration and exploitation activities promote organizational ambidexterity in large construction companies. Furthermore, the study shows that contextual ambidexterity is central within all organizational levels, but needs to be complemented by structural ambidexterity on business unit level and a new type of sequential ambidexterity at project level. The result has then been synthesized into a model that illustrates how big construction companies create a self-sufficient ambidextrous organization. Theoretical implications – The study contributes with an empirically based model of how big construction companies create a self-sufficient ambidextrous organization, as well as a new approach to sequential ambidexterity at project level. Practical implications – The framework practically contributes with a process that the top management can implement and then managers and others concerned can work for. It provides guidelines on how decisions are made and how to work with exploration and exploitation activities.

Abstract:
This cumulative dissertation covers the concepts of scenario-based strategic planning and strategic management in family firms over five articles. The first article gives an overview of the cumulative dissertation explaining the research gap, approach and contribution of the dissertation. The paper highlights the two research areas covered by the dissertation with two articles focusing on scenario-based strategic planning and two on strategic management in family firms. The second article is the first of two focusing on scenario-based strategic planning. It introduces and describes a set of six tools facilitating the implementation of scenario-based strategic planning in corporate practice. The third paper adapts these tools to the financial management and controlling context in private companies highlighting the tools’ flexibility in managing uncertain and volatile environments. The fourth article is the first of two focusing on strategic management in family firms. It analyzes organizational ambidexterity as a factor explaining family firm performance. The article shows that a high level of organizational ambidexterity in family firms leads to a higher family firm performance. The final paper concludes the dissertation examining the tendency of family firms to focus on capability exploration or resource exploitation over different generations managing the family firm.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Social networking sites (SNSs) and social media (SM) are part of the daily lives of more than half the population of the planet and they provide organizations with an inexhaustible source of data about consumer preferences, patterns, and social trends. A research gap was found that uncovers the opportunity to further explore the contributions of social customer relationship management (SCRM) to ambidexterity. This study addresses the use of SCRM as a tool to achieve ambidexterity, with an approach to SCRM based in people, processes and technology and supported by the theory of Exploration-Exploitation (Ex-Ex) and the theory of ambidexterity. The study uses a qualitative multi-method design, with a multiple-case study comprising two cases and performing a qualitative comparative analysis (using fuzzy set Qualitative Comparative Analysis). Primary data was obtained through interviews with key informants from companies providing software solutions and consultancy services related to SM, and also from clients originating from various companies in several industries. The results of the study show the difficulty in achieving ambidexterity and allow the identification of two key factors for its achievement – a low level of adoption of social media platforms and a small or medium size dimension for the company. From an academic point of view, the main contributions are related with the identification of the configurations conditions for an organization to achieve ambidexterity. Beside that, the results show the constraints related to the pursuit of ambidexterity by organizations with a presence in SM allied to a SCRM strategy. From a managerial point of view, the study proposes a set of actions to overcome the constraints identified and to frame such actions to ensure a significant path to the achievement of ambidexterity.
info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

Abstract:
The concept of ambidexterity has gained prominence in the literature on organizational capabilities. More specifically, the notion of contextual ambidexterity is seen as an antecedent of performance at the level of the business units. In this paper, it is argued that the concept of contextual ambidexterity needs to be expanded in order to detail its two fundamental components - alignment and adaptability - and to accommodate a new dimension, namely the switching rule. Additionally, it is suggested that the effect of contextual ambidexterity on performance is mediated by the activity of innovation in which the business units engage. Data collected from a sample of 202 cases allows to obtain preliminary evidence for these assertions.

Abstract:
Contextual ambidexterity is a relatively recent concept, which had in Gibson and Birkinshaw (2004) the major starting point. However, the definitions proposed so far have some gaps both at conceptual level and in terms of measuring the effects of contextual ambidexterity. Thus, in this thesis a strengthening of this concept was made. To the two existing components of contextual ambidexterity, adaptability and alignment, an additional component was added, a switching rule, that guides the individual judgment of when choose to manage behaviors related to alignment or adaptability. But also the two original components were expanded, beginning the strengthening of the concept from their bases. Based on a sample of 202 cases, a study was conducted on the effects of contextual ambidexterity on organizational performance, introduced an innovation in this type of studies, the use of a mediating variable, in this case speed-to-market. After the analysis, the results point to positive effects of contextual ambidexterity both in mediating variable as well as in organizational performance.

Abstract:
Developed within this study in the analysis of organizational ambidexterity, whose concept has been the subject of scientific debate, but according to some authors is defined by the quality of the organization to be efficient in their decisions to current needs and simultaneously when adapting to changes in their environment. Thus, organizations have to be ambidextrous to reconcile the internal tensions and conflicts at the level of demand. It was also considered improvisation and defined as the reuse of procedures and expertise of the members of an organization in order to allow adequate capacity to answer to the specificities of the situations, having studied the respective impacts on the performance of Museums, revealing that the presence of organizational memory doesn’t restrict the improvisation neither ambidexterity, producing in most cases, flexibility and appropriate answers and going to meet the goals and the mission of each museum.

Abstract:
This study examines the influence of organizational factors, Contextual Ambidexterity and Improvisation, in Organizational Performance measured through the perception of employees of public organizations. Simultaneously, assesses the moderating effect of the availability of internal resources - Slack, and external resources - Munificence, in the relationship between Contextual Ambidexterity and Improvisation, and Performance. Through a correlational study based on a sample of 33 individuals in a department of a public organization, the results suggest that factors Contextual Ambidexterity and Improvisation are positively correlated with Organizational Performance, and that the relationship contextual ambidexterity - organizational performance is enhanced with higher levels of slack, i.e., the internal availability of slack resources has a positive moderating effect on how the two variables are related. The munificence had no influence on this relationship. It was also found that the relationship improvisation - organizational performance doesn’t experience any interaction from the moderating factors.

Abstract:
Knowledge is a key factor to assign a sustainable competitive advantage for companies and a condition for the formation of value and is assumed as a fundamental tool to support the decision-making process and definition of business strategy in complex exogenous environments of uncertainty and change. The issue of corporate knowledge, its relationship with concepts such as 'business intelligence', 'competitive intelligence', 'economic intelligence' and 'strategic intelligence', and with the concept of organizational ambidexterity, resulting from the tension between the exploitation of existing knowledge and exploring new knowledge, as well as analyzed in the framework of the challenges to companies presented by their knowledge absorptive capacity. The results of an inquiry submitted to leaders and corporate executives contributed to directly verify the validity of the perception on concepts in discussion and also to evaluate their applicability, namely, the relevance of knowledge as a competitive advantage, the relevance of exogenous knowledge in change management and the importance of knowledge to strategy and decision-making.

Master's thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10071/4059.

Abstract:
The competition between organizations is rising which makes the individual performance to be superior in order to maintain and desirably increase the organization market position to grow up and, consequently, raise the company profitability. Nevertheless, organizational performance strongly depends on the individual performance of its employees and their commitment to it. In the presence of the ambidextrous organizations problematic, is aimed to study the performance having in mind the commitment tripartite model that argue that people could be in the organization because they want, they should or they have no choice. Beyond the study of the commitment development and the consequent people performance of the case study company – Vortal S.A. – were analysed the commitment antecedents and their relationship with the performance and others organizational outputs. The case study confirmed many of the literature assumptions like the fact that the performance be higher in employees that are mainly affective committed to the organization. The organizations stratified analyses allow the results comparability where the correlations have showed that the organizational culture represents a vital role in organizations management and commitment development. The clan and adhocracy cultures showed a positive correlation with the commitment while their opposites, the market culture and hierarchy culture, showed a negative correlation. The case study results also expressed a positive correlation of 0,871 between clan culture and the performance that represents, with other outcomes, important guidelines in organizations management.

Abstract:
Contextual ambidexterity has caught the interest of researchers for the recent years. However, the concept itself has not evolved since its creation in 2004 by the work of Gibson and Birkinshaw and, to this time, it is seen as a combination of the capacities for alignment and adaptability in a business unit. In this dissertation, some modifications to the model are proposed in order to strengthen it. These are to transform alignment and adaptability into a set of sub-dimensions each and to add a third variable, autonomy norm. Additionally, the new model was tested in organizations from the public sector because, given the particular pressures that these organizations face, it would be logical that this organizational capacity would help to balance them. Confirmatory factor analyses and hierarchical regression analysis were used to examine the responses from 199 public workers and their results were satisfactory, since alignment and adaptability were better represented as multiple factors, autonomy norm showed to reinforce contextual ambidexterity and, at last, all three variables displayed some effect on performance. These results will have both implications for the existing and future literature on ambidexterity and for the practices of managers in public organizations.
