We propose a new method for semantic parsing of ambiguous and ungrammatical input, such as search queries. We do so by building on an existing semantic parsing framework that uses synchronous context free grammars (SCFG) to jointly model the input sentence and output meaning representation. We generalize this SCFG framework to allow not one, but multiple outputs. Disciplines are constructed as sites and topics of canonic knowledge through the texts produced by those who claim membership in them. This chapter describes how such activities helped to implement fields of knowledge production that were deeply rooted in colonial contexts, into different settings, where they seemed to gain new meaning and relevance. Postwar Africanistics as an academic discipline considered specifically German yet also part of the globally present field of African linguistics, emanated, against this background, out of writing about “proper topics” and the outcome of “fundamental research,” about the lives led by its important texts and the ways in which these texts dealt with the lives of the Africanists who engaged with them. This also entails thinking about the notion of experthood in linguistics and about the ambiguous connotations of this word in the postcolonial context in which Africanistics (or African linguistics) is situated.

This chapter focuses on the everyday antagonisms that are perpetuated through memetic participation, specifically regarding race and gender identities. However, it also argues that memetic participation can be employed for the counterpublic contestation of those same antagonisms. The memetic logics, grammar, and vernacular introduced in the first half of the book are tools employed for both silencing marginalization and vocal pushback of that marginalization. The nature of this counterpublic engagement is ambivalent though, given that memetic media are often fraught with ambiguous irony and ambivalent humor. Genuine antagonisms and marginalizations can thrive under the “just joking” frame. But—even in the midst of this ambivalent system—there is value to the agonistic counterpublic engagement occurring through memetic media. Voice exists, even in the midst of the tensions evident throughout this discussion.

Every natural language parser will sometimes misunderstand its input. Misunderstandings can arise from speech recognition errors or inadequacies in the language grammar, or they may result from an input that is ungrammatical or ambiguous. Whatever their cause, misunderstandings can jeopardize the success of the larger system of which the parser is a component. For this reason, it is important to reduce the number of misunderstandings to a minimum. In a dialog system, it is possible to reduce the number of misunderstandings by requiring the user to verify each utterance. Some speech dialog systems implement verification by requiring the user to speak every utterance twice, or to confirm a word-by-word readback of every utterance. Such verification is effective at reducing errors that result from word misrecognitions, but does nothing to abate misunderstandings that result from other causes. Furthermore, verification of all utterances can be needlessly wearisome to the user, especially if the system is working well. A superior approach is to have the spoken language system verify the deduced meaning of an input only under circumstances where the accuracy of the deduced meaning is seriously in doubt, or correct understanding is essential to the success of the dialog. The verification is accomplished through the use of a verification subdialog—a short sequence of conversational exchanges intended to confirm or reject the hypothesized meaning. The following example of a verification subdialog will suffice to illustrate the idea. . . . computer: What is the LED displaying? user: The same thing. computer: Did you mean to say that the LED is displaying the same thing? user: Yes. . . . As will be further seen below, selective verification via a subdialog results in an unintrusive, human-like exchange between user and machine. A recent enhancement to the Circuit Fix-it Shop dialog system is a subsystem that uses a verification subdialog to verify the meaning of the user’s utterance only when the meaning is in doubt or when accuracy is critical for the success of the dialog.
