The positively acting regulatory gene amdR of Aspergillus nidulans coordinately regulates the expression of four unlinked structural genes involved in acetamide (amdS), omega amino acid (gatA and gabA), and lactam (lamA) catabolism. This was surprising for a pollutant known to have a long residence time in the atmosphere; however conditions appeared to exist in the Arctic that promoted this depletion of mercury (Hg). This phenomenon is termed atmospheric mercury depletion events (AMDEs) and its discovery has revolutionized our understanding of the cycling of Hg in Polar Regions while stimulating a significant amount of research to understand its impact to this fra

Abstract Rotating instabilities (RIs) have been reported in axial flow fans as well as in low-speed and high-speed axial compressors during recent years. They can cause the non-synchronous vibrations (NSV) and generate noise. The phenomena of RIs in the axial fan were first observed during an experimental test. Abstract:
The microstructure and mechanical properties of materials produced by Wide Gap Brazing (WGB) and Laser Beam (LBW) cladding with different blends of Mar M247 and Amdry DF-3 brazing powders were studied. It was shown that LBW Mar M247 based materials comprised of 0.6 to 1 wt. % B were weldable. The weld properties were superior to WGB deposits with the same bulk chemical composition, due to the formation of a dendritic structure typical for welded joints, and the precipitation of cuboidal borides of Cr, Mo, and W in the ductile Ni-Cr based matrix. Both materials were found to have useful propert

Abstract:
Atmospheric mercury (Hg) is deposited to Polar Regions during springtime atmospheric mercury depletion events (AMDEs) that require halogens and snow or ice surfaces. The fate of this Hg during and following snowmelt is largely unknown. We measured Hg, major ions, and stable water isotopes from the snowpack through the entire spring melt runoff period for two years. Our small (2.5 ha) watershed is near Barrow (now Utqiaġvik), Alaska. We measured discharge, made 10 000 snow depths, and collected over 100 samples of snow and meltwater for chemical analysis in 2008 and 2009 from the watershed snow

Abstract:
Springtime atmospheric mercury depletion events (AMDEs) lead to snow with elevated mercury concentrations (>200 ng Hg/L) in the Arctic and Antarctic. During AMDEs gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) is photochemically oxidized by halogens to reactive gaseous mercury which is deposited to the snowpack. This reactive mercury is either photochemically reduced back to GEM and reemitted to the atmosphere or remains in the snowpack until spring snowmelt. GEM is also deposited to the snowpack and tundra vegetation by reactive surface uptake (dry deposition) from the atmosphere. There is little consens
