Abstract:
Nowhere is America's hegemonic decline more evident than in changing trade patterns. The United States trade balance, a measure of the international demand for American goods, is suffering historic deficits. Lowered demand for American goods has led to the under-utilization of both labor and capital in a growing number of traditionally competitive American industries. Conversely, Americans' taste for foreign goods has never been so great. Japanese cars, European steel, Third World textiles, to name a few, are as well produced as their American counterparts and arrive on the U.S. market at a lower cost.

Abstract:
Although car-ownership matters to many Latin Americans and cars are nearly omnipresent in daily life in Latin American societies, very little is known about important aspects of the social and cultural histories of automobility in Latin America. However, in the last ten years, several historians have begun to approach the meanings of automobility in Latin American countries. This trend is closely connected to recent developments and new approaches in the international research on mobility, the latter of which I discuss in the first part of this essay. To proceed, I analyze the state of the art on the history of automobility in Latin America, focusing on the following aspects: the emergence of early Latin American car cultures, car and traffic-related social conflicts, and road building. In the last part I ponder on the question of how future studies might advance the state of research on automobility and offer new perspectives on central themes in Latin American history.Although car-ownership matters to many Latin Americans and cars are nearly omnipresent in daily life in Latin American societies, very little is known about important aspects of the social and cultural histories of automobility in Latin America. Abstract:
My role as an environmental anthropologist has allowed me to work in many national and international settings. With an interest in culture, technology and the environment, I have focused on environmental issues concerning air pollution and climate change. I have worked with the USEPA managing national surveys and on projects on the US/Mexico border. Most recently, I have worked with the City of Fort Collins, Colorado in an effort to develop an environmental education course that can be delivered to junior high/middle school (preferably 9th grade) students. The purpose of this course is to heighten awareness of personal responsibility as it relates to the automobile and the environment within the context of the American Culture. As an anthropologist, my role was to help the students gain an understanding of the "American Car Culture" and to see how their attitudes and actions reflect their culture and effect their environment. I did this by developing a slide presentation that introduced the concept of the "culture" of the car in America and by including the use of anthropological methods in student assignments assessing attitudes and actions toward the car.

Abstract:
In the past ten years, many Japanese manufacturers, especially automobile manufacturers, have opened plants in the United States. The Japanese have, in that time, increased their market share from one in five to nearly one in three cars that Americans drive. There are clear differences in Japanese and American business practices in the areas of organizational culture, leadership style, selection, training, employee attitudes, job satisfaction, and quality. American businesses must understand these differences and realize the most effective and efficient approach to produce goods and services that will fit in with our culture. The lessons we have learned from Japanese transplants and American corporations may have important implications to managers in public personnel management.

Abstract:
This creative project was a study of combining large-scale ceramics and polymer resin (Brandname: Bondo) vessels. This project came out of an earlier experiment combining metals and resin, and therefore the interest in combining clay and resin was a natural transition for me, since ceramics was my major focus. I had a definite interest in the challenge of marrying two very different materials; clay and resin, and by using this combination I would make vessels that were visually successful and engaged the viewer. The technical basis for all of the ceramic elements of the vessels is wheel throwing. The molds made for the resin parts of the piece were wheel thrown as well. This project was very unique and there was little documented technical information for me to rely on other than personal experimentation and ceramic knowledge. The visual elements of clay with its opaqueness, and resin with its translucent qualities offered great visual contrast. The use of color contrast between warm and cool colors became an important element of the pieces. From an expressive standpoint, I feel the form of the vessels is viewed as solid and confrontational, yet very compelling. The smooth surfaces and the lush vibrant colors compel the viewer to examine the forms. The pieces are commanding in size and strength, so the viewer is somewhat hesitant to view for too long. There is a visual push/pull, a contrast between these simple yet over-scaled layered forms that evokes an emotional push/pull as well.

Schmidt, Greg F. "Computer Adaptive Rating Scales (CARS) for the Employment Interview." Scholar Commons, 2011. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/3334.

Full text
Abstract:
This research investigates the effectiveness of computerized adaptive rating scales (CARS) in comparison to the relatively more common behavioral anchored ratings scales (BARS) format. The current study sought to extend the body of psychometric research of CARS while investigating its potential for use in the employment interview. Using 43 videotaped interviews and supervisor job performance ratings, and constructing a new task-performance based CARS, it was hypothesized that employment interview ratings produced using the CARS format would yield significantly higher predictive validity coefficients than those produced by the BARS format. Results showed that while interview ratings produced in the CARS format were predictive of supervisor job performance ratings, they were not significantly higher than ratings in the BARS format. Academic and applied implications are discussed.

Abstract:
The artistic is always political, even if not overtly so—each work carries with it the histories of the artist, the means of production, the subject matter, and the many art historical precedents that overlap and diverge to constitute the theoretical circumstances surrounding it. Since I began translating my lived experience into artworks, I have become interested in the ways in which my personal politics have affected the choices I have made in material and narrative substance. This is a deconstruction of the politics of representation as a method for better understanding the art historical context in which contemporary materials- and performance-based art work exists and to conceptually develop the work I want to produce in the future.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract This paper was written to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the ASME Rail Transportation Division, which was founded in 1920 and held its first meeting in St. Louis. It attempts to paint a picture of the U. S. railroad freight car and the engineering processes involved in its design and construction in 1920 and compare this with today’s designs and practices. Progress in freight car design has been evolutionary rather than revolutionary. The steel freight car had largely replaced its wooden predecessor by 1920 and the basic design of many cars was already in place. Exceptions being the Spine Car and the Well Car, which were entirely unknown in 1920. The Box Car has diminished greatly in importance and more specialized cars are now common. One important difference is that welding is now used extensively in freight car construction whereas in 1920 riveting was almost universal. An important change is the availability of electronic instrumentation to measure, record and analyze the load environment of cars. This has allowed the development of performance-based specifications and these have largely replaced the prescriptive standards used in 1920. CAD and FE analysis have revolutionized the way in which cars are designed, allowing much more refined analysis which has led to far lighter car designs. In 1920 virtually all Engineers were white men — this too is changing.

Abstract:
Abstract At first glance, it seems appealing to suggest additional wheelsets under a given railcar type. From the track’s viewpoint, and in a simplistic analysis, trading a particular car’s four-axles for the use of six should allow half again more car weight. This paper will examine efforts to test this concept over the past century. Indeed, the railway marketplace has investigated the three-axle truck in both the freight and passenger car arenas multiple times over the past century. Except in heavy-duty flatcars, the record shows that each implementation has proven to be only temporary. In general, three-axle freight trucks were developed for use with steam locomotive tenders in the early 20th century. These designs were then adapted to other car types over several decades, involving thousands of individual cars. Today, three-axle trucks are nearly extinct. This paper will address the history and status of three-axle freight trucks (or bogies) as used in North American railcar operations. Various past 20th-century applications will be discussed. International efforts will be reviewed as well. The very limited and remaining current usage of three-axle trucks is also discussed.
