American Expressionists were a group of American artists who valued free expression of unconscious elements, combining emotional intense expressions with anti-figurative abstract style. Their main place of creative debates was Cedar Tavern in New York City, considered by art critics an important incubator of the Abstract Expressionism. Jackson Pollock, one of the most prominent figures of this movement, suspected of having bipolar disorder, abused alcohol during long periods of his life, for which he even underwent psychotherapy. Objective:Several studies have suggested that alcohol drinking is protective for the development and progression of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). However, a protopathic bias might also explain this apparent association. Our objective was to investigate the association between alcohol consumption and incidence of SLE in a data set that has information on both current and pre-diagnostic alcohol consumption. Methods:We performed an Internet-based case–control study of SLE. Cases were diagnosed within 5 years of the study and met ⩾4 American College of Rheumatology criteria for SLE. The contr

The 1996 Safe Drinking Water Act Amendments required that water utilities send quality reports to customers. We test whether receiving such reports of health violations increases purchases of bottled water using newly released data and disaggregate changes in demand at the intensive and extensive margins. We find that a water-quality violation makes American households 25 percent more likely to purchase bottled water and, among purchasers, expenditures increase 4–7 percent, both larger responses than found in previous studies. In today’s college culture, more universities in the United States are confronted with the escalating societal problem of alcohol abuse. Some say college-aged alcohol consumption is a rite of passage, or a way of enjoying college life. Others say such behavior is a start of a life-long tragedy of addiction and destructiveness. The photographs in Requiem for A Drink were taken at the University of Iowa which capture the excessive profanity of disoriented intoxication, inhibition, and disregard for the environment. However, many art songs are unable to be utilized because of the lack of resources in this country concerning their acquisition, identification, history, pronunciation and performance. Abundant gull populations in North America have led to a variety of conflicts with people. Gulls cause damage at aquaculture facilities and other properties, and often collide with aircraft. Their use of structures on and near water results in excessive amounts of bird droppings on boats and docks. Their presence near outdoor dining establishments, swimming beaches, and recreational sites can lead to negative interactions with people.
