Abstract:
As part of the New Directions of the Latina/o South forum, this essay centers southern Latina/o cultural productions to examine practices of representation through Kap G’s rap texts. As the first popular Mexican American rapper from Atlanta, Georgia, Kap G lyrically and visually works to represent a southern Mexicanidad through his songs, music videos, and interviews. His work illustrates a second-generation identification with migrant struggles around issues of (im)migration, (il)legality, and labor.

The respondents raise interesting issues that deserve further discussion in this and other forums. I urge readers to examine my original paper published in this journal and compare it with the concerns raised here. I do note several points of agreement, including the recognition that repressive governments affect the work of archaeology both directly and indirectly; that Latin American countries differ remarkedly in their individual histories and approaches to government; and that, in general, archaeology in Latin America is dependent on the state.

Full, R. J., D. A. Zuccarello, and A. Tullis. "Effect of variation in form on the cost of terrestrial locomotion." Journal of Experimental Biology 150, no. 1 (May 1, 1990): 233–46. http://dx.doi.org/10.1242/jeb.150.1.233.

Full text
Abstract:
The mass-specific minimum cost of terrestrial locomotion (Cmin) decreases with an increase in body mass. This generalization spans nearly eight orders of magnitude in body mass and includes two phyla. The general relationship between metabolic cost and mass is striking. However, a significant amount of unexplained interspecific variation in Cmin exists at any given body mass. To determine how variation in morphology and physiology affects metabolic energy cost, we measured the oxygen consumption of three comparably sized insects running on a miniature treadmill; the American cockroach Periplaneta americana, the caterpillar hunting beetle Calosoma affine and the Australian field cricket Teleogryllus commodus. Steady-state oxygen consumption (VO2ss) increased linearly with speed. Cmin was similar for crickets and cockroaches (8.0 and 8.5 ml O2 g-1km-1, respectively), but was substantially lower for beetles (4.6 ml O2 g-1km-1). The predicted value of Cmin for all three insects was within the 95% confidence intervals of the Cmin versus body mass function. However, the 95% confidence intervals extend approximately 2.5-fold above and 40% below the regression line, making the variation at any given body mass nearly sixfold. Normalizing for the rate of muscle force production by determining the metabolic cost per stride failed to account for the interspecific variation in the cost of locomotion observed in the three insects. Ground contact costs (i.e. VO2ss multiplied by leg contact time during a stride) in insects were similar to those measured in mammals (1.5-3.1 J kg-1) and were independent of speed, but did not explain the interspecific variation in the cost of locomotion. Muscles of the caterpillar hunting beetle may have a greater mechanical advantage than muscles of the Australian field cricket and American cockroach. Variation in musculo-skeletal arrangement, apart from variation in body mass, could translate into significant differences in the minimum cost of terrestrial locomotion.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The World Economic Forum has identified that the oil and gas (O&G) industry must lead the process of its own transformation by innovation and multistakeholder collaboration. The Capital Project Complexity initiative is an industry-wide, noncompetitive collaboration on standardisation and use of procurement specifications. Australia is now a major contributor to this collaboration which has brought together all the major O&G operators through the International Association of Oil & Gas Producers (IOGP) network and the standardisation bodies including International Organization for Standardization (ISO), American Petroleum Institute Standards, European Committee for Standardization, Gulf Cooperation Council Standardization Organization, Standardization Administration of China, Standards Australia (SA) and many more. The focus is on developing common international standards through an IOGP Standards-ISO/TC67 link and standardised equipment specifications linking to these standards through IOGP-JIP33. Australia contributes via SA’s mirror committee ME-92, which is now fully established with direct involvement in the ISO/TC67 9 subcommittee areas and 13 working groups covering 261 current and developing standards. In September 2020, the first of these standards, AS ISO 29001, was identically adopted as an Australian standard. With the Australian experts now ensuring ISO Standards will incorporate Australian industry expertise, knowledge and regulatory requirements where possible future revisions will enable them to be adopted as the next revision of the Australian standard. This industry-wide collaboration will ensure future project costs are optimised and safety enhanced through use of the global industry knowledge while also reducing the need to write local standards. This study describes Australia’s strategy being pursued to align with the global industry. It also provides information on how this network is supporting the development of knowledge transfer to the decommissioning and new energy industries that will form Australia’s future.

GERMINATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF AMERICAN LETTUCE SEEDLINGS (Lactuca sativa L.) IRRIGATED WITH HOME AND INDUSTRIAL EFFLUENT-RECEIVING WATER Guilherme Augusto Biscaro1; Rodrigo de Menezes Trigueiro2; Raimundo Leite Cruz2; Marcelo Domingos Chamma Lopes2State University of Mato Grosso do Sul, Cassilândia, MS, (Brazil), gbiscaro@uems.brRural Engineering Department, Agronomic Science College,Paulista State University , Botucatu-SP (Brazil). 1 ABSTRACT This work has evaluated germination and formation of American lettuce seedlings (Lactuca sativa L.) “Tainá” variety, irrigated with urban effluent-receiving water from Lavapés Creek, a water body which receives all home and industrial sewage of the city of Botucatu, SP (Brazil). The sowing was carried out in 12 plastic foam trays with 32 germination cells each. At 41 days after planting (41-DAP), the seed germination percentage, seedling final size, final number of leaves, the mass of shoot and root dry matter were evaluated. Also, two sorts of substrates were investigated: Multiplantâ and Plug Mixâ. No complementary fertilization was done, so the only available nutrients were the ones originally present in the substrates and in the creek water. For compararison an evaluation was performed using a source of treated water instead of the creek water. Results pointed out that all sown seeds presented 100% of germination. Treatments with Multiplantâ presented the greatest values for plant height. Treatments irrigated with Lavapés Creek water presented a greater number of leaves at 41-DAP. KEYWORDS: Seedling germination, Lactuca sativa L., effluent receiving water.

Abstract:
The Getty Foundation's 2017 initiative Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA provided a rare instance in which art historians and curators collaborated closely on extended research projects aimed at expanding narratives about Latin American and Latinx art and culture. It pondered how art history might be reimagined to address the complex geographies and temporalities of Latin/x American art, honoring specificities while also proposing new frameworks. Taken as a whole, the exhibitions also exposed the constraints of curatorial practice to generate new epistemologies, calling attention to the shortcomings of conventional art historical methods and their tendency to reproduce predetermined structures for organizing knowledge when they go unquestioned. Inspired by the multitude of generative conversations produced in the wake of PST: LA/LA, this Dialogue addresses the methodological constraints of art historical, curatorial, and artistic practices by inviting contributors to reflect on how their methods have been shaped by the demands of the field. This Dialogue includes an introductory text by Tatiana Flores and Harper Montgomery in which they argue for the utility of the concepts of “radical inclusion,” developed by the philosopher Gerald Raunig, and “complex connectivity,” coined by sociologist John Tomlinson, and six essays in which the authors address questions of ethics, inclusion, and historiography: Amy Buono focuses on museums and collections in Brazil, Laura Anderson Barbata on a papermaking project in the Venezuelan Amazon, Erina Duganne on activist artists in Central America and the United States, Alma Ruiz on her efforts to promote the collecting and exhibition of Latin American art in Los Angeles, Edith A. G. Wolfe on pedagogy and post-hurricane Puerto Rico, and Ana María Reyes on symbolic reparations in Colombia and Brazil.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The articles on American domestic service that appear in this issue of Social Science History were part of a 1989 Social Science History Association Annual Meeting session. They reveal that, despite the investigations of Katzman (1978), Sutherland (1981), Dudden (1983), Glenn (1986), and others, there is still a great deal to know about domestic service in the United States. Each article offers a different perspective on transformations within domestic service in the United States in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and provides new information about different demographic categories of domestic servants. Taken together, they suggest creative new ways of understanding the occupation and its relationship to race, ethnicity, gender, and the industrial labor market.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The words used to describe things sometimes tell us less about the thing itself and more about those telling the story: and in the case of the words ‘American Empire’ one could more or less tell in the past that the story was being told by a critic. Not any longer. Indeed, since 9/11 those who have been at the forefront of promoting the idea have not been radical opponents on the left but defenders of the United States on the neo-conservative right. Under conditions where the US dominates the earth like no other power, Empire they argue not only describes what America has become – even though its own leaders invariably fail to recognise the fact; it also indicates to us what has to be done if we are to tackle the threat posed by catastrophic terrorism. And in this the United States now needs to do what it normally does worst: namely learn from the history of other great powers. As one of the new gurus of Empire has suggested, in a world of failed states and terrorist threats, the US has to abandon the idea that it is unique and see how its predecessors, the British and the Romans, created the conditions of order before.

Abstract:
Few topics seem more natural and, sadly, timelier than American religion in bad economic times, our own or the economic depression of the 1930s. The essays by Heather Curtis, Jonathan Ebel, and Alison Greene point up how little we know about religion in the 1930s and, by implication, how little religion has informed policy during our own economic downturn. Perhaps our own crisis is still too new or we are distracted by the “Christian nation” debate or the latest clerical sex scandal. Whatever the cause, Curtis, Ebel, and Greene demonstrate that in the 1930s religion and economic dislocation produced remarkable religious challenges and transformations whose similarities as well as differences underlined their sometimes fateful intersection.
